Fond Farewells & New Beginnings
APRIL 2017 PUBLISHER
Joyce Selk | Joyce.Selk@LifestylePubs.com
S
pring has finally arrived, and all the tell-tale signs of it are clear: days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, flowers are starting to pop-up along the roadside and the promise of summer lingers in the air. For many, spring is a time of growth, renewal and new beginnings with the coming of a new, brighter season. Yet spring is also a time for fond farewells too, as we pack up our favorite winter sweaters and blankets and recall all the warm, cherished memories of the holidays spent with friends and family behind us. This sentiment rings especially true to me this spring, as I will be saying a most fond farewell as the Editor of Chandler Lifestyle Magazine. It has truly been such a pleasure and humbling experience being the Editor of this magazine and having the opportunity to serve my community through the stories that we bring forth every month. Our motto here at Lifestyle Publications has always been “Inspired by Community,” and it is you, our readers and residents, that have truly inspired me during my time here. I feel so fortunate to have been able to meet with so many incredible individuals, businesses and philanthropic organizations who have opened both their hearts and homes to share their passions and give me a glimpse as to why they are so devoted to each of their individual causes—it has been a truly life-changing experience.

Along with my talented group of writers and wonderful publisher, I feel honored to have gotten to work with all of you too, whether it was meeting individually, via email or hearing feedback on the magazine. But, just as the changing of the seasons is inevitable, I too must move forward with the next step in my journey and wish all of you a bright and blessed future. Also, in the spirit of spring and new beginnings, I want to share with you some colorful stories— like planting tips and advice from Greenhouse Gardens, Farmto-Table dining experiences at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa, fabulous DIY bouquets from Cactus Flower Florists, and the haute spring styles showcased in a wonderful fashion shoot at Desert Botanical Garden—to kick-off what is sure to be a bright season full of warmth and enjoyment.

LOOK BEFORE YOU PUMP FUEL CAMPAIGN The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) wants to remind consumers that it’s important to “Look Before You Pump.” There are many fuel blends on the market now. Most gasoline-powered lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and other outdoor power equipment are warranted and designed to use E10 or less fuel (10 percent or less ethanol). Fuel with more than 10 percent ethanol can damage or destroy lawn and garden equipment. Always check the owner’s manual and use E10 or less in lawn and garden equipment. For more information, please visit OPEI.org.

actus Flower imports blooms from around the world. But when Eric Luoma wants something that looks, feels and smells like
Chandler, he keeps his eye peeled on the side of the road and creates a “Roadsidia bouquet. He has a good sense of humor, but also recognizes the value in slowing down to smell the creosote.
HOW-TO 1
Forage for an assortment of greenery, such as creosote, which smells sweet like rain even when its dry. Other common desert plants such as sage, brittlebush, white flowers from a blooming yucca, senna and Mexican bird of paradise can be found alongside the road or in your yard.
2 3
Trim one-half inch off each stem and place the flowers and greenery in water as soon as possible. Arrange your new flora in a vase or container at home and combine with other fresh flowers.
See how-to videos on CactusFlower.com for additional design tips from floral experts.

HANDPICKED PERFECTION (CON TI N U ED)
ABOUT CACTUS FLOWER FLORISTS Everyone has a flower story, but few compare to that of Eric Luoma. He’s been in the flower business since he was four years old, giving him a lifetime of colorful memories. His mother, Sharron, was passionate about flowers. In the 1970s, she opened a flower shop and became one of the first women entrepreneurs in Scottsdale. And although one may think she named her business after the beautiful blooms in the desert, she didn’t. Sharron named it after her favorite movie starring Goldie Hawn, Cactus Flower. Cactus Flower Florists has always been a family affair, and their current location is only 100 feet from where it all began. The torch was passed to Eric and his sister, Kristina Dyrr, in the mid 1990s, and their dad joined the team

when he retired from Honeywell. However, the business has changed since the days when the Luoma children dressed up as Easter bunnies and elves to deliver flowers. Expanding to five retail stores in the Valley now allows them to share quality flowers and thoughtful gifts with people from across the country, but the important things remain the same. “Our family has been helping the community celebrate life’s milestones for 45 years,” says Eric. "We give people a place to go when they don’t know what to say or how to say it.” Find a store near you at CactusFlower.com and explore more options at FlowerShop.com.
FUN FLOWER FACTS AIR PURIFIER:
It’s good to have live plants around your office and home to help filter toxins and air pollutants. Date, areca and bamboo palms are the best at removing toxins; there is nothing more natural to clean your air with. EDIBLE FLOWERS:
Corn flower, marigolds and rose petals are edible flowers and used in salads at fine restaurants. TRENDY CARNATIONS:
The price of the carnation is almost the same as when Cactus Flower opened in 1972. It's often overlooked as a common flower, but it comes in a variety of surprising scents, shapes and colors. LONGEST LASTING:
Go tropical if you’re looking for a flower to last a couple of weeks. Cactus Flower flies in tropical stems all the way from Costa Rica and Thailand. PRICEY FLOWERS:
The Phalaenopsis orchid is the most expensive flower purchased by Cactus Flower. It has a four-foot stem covered with blooms and costs $100. Lilly of the Valley is coveted by many brides, and costs between $50 to $75 a stem. The small, delicate flower is six to eight inches long and can usually only be purchased for two or three weeks during the winter. MOST POPULAR:
The rose is the most symbolic and requested flower. It comes in thousands of colors, fragrances and styles. “Roses remind some people of their childhood, while others associate them with romance or Valentine’s Day,” says Eric. “They are fragrant, beautiful and bring happiness to those who receive them.” April 2017 | Chandler Lifestyle

ust a little over a year ago, Jeannine and Cameron McChesney opened Greenhouse Gardens, a unique urban market garden in Chandler. It is located in the original Riggs family farmhouse, and the two are the first non-fam-

carport of the house. The 1957 tractor that Lyle [Riggs] used is parked out front. The barn, built in 1950, is full of old Riggs farming artifacts,” says

“We do not use any chemical pesticides or fertilizers. We grow 365 days a year, and the market will be open every weekend except for a few weeks during the summer,” says McChesney. “We are very excited to bring fresh, local produce to our area of Chandler.” As a duo, the couple has had a backyard garden in one form or another for the past 17 years. “Each time we moved to a new house, the garden got bigger. Our current garden got so large that we had extra vegetables that we offered to family, friends and neighbors. The feedback was amazing, so we decided to give production gardening a try,” says McChesney. “We borrowed a great friend's backyard and filled it with 1,200 square feet of planting area. We sold at a small farmers’ market and grew our own clientele from our neighborhood and surrounding areas.” After two years, they finally bought their dream property and Greenhouse Gardens was born. “Our first year has been outstanding,” says McChesney. “We are still finishing the construction of the garden, and our clientele has grown as our produce availability has grown. We have quite a loyal following already, and more new customers stop by each weekend.” For more information on Greenhouse Gardens, visit their social media pages at Facebook.com/GreenHouseGardensAZ and Instagram.com/GreenHouseGardens.

KNOW YOUR VEGETABLES LOCAL GROWTH (CON TI N U ED)
MAKE THE MOST OF SPRING PLANTING WITH these TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS AT GREENHOUSE GARDENS TOMATOES
The crown jewel of the spring and summer harvest is the tomato. Nothing beats the flavor of a fresh, locally grown tomato. We plant our tomatoes in February and March and harvest them in late May through July. Due to Arizona's short, hot spring growing season, we recommend growing cherry tomatoes. They ripen faster than full-sized slicing tomatoes.
ARMENIAN CUCUMBERS
Technically a melon, the Armenian Cucumber thrives in hot weather. The vines are vigorous climbers and the cucumbers can reach three feet in length. When harvested small, they are juicy, crisp and sweet and work great in salads or sliced as a snack.
EGGPLANT
Eggplants love the heat and there are many varieties to choose from. We enjoy the Italian variety called Rosa Bianca and the Asian variety called Ping Tung. If you shade the plants in the summer and cover them in the winter, a single plant can continue to produce eggplants for many seasons. 30

SUMMER SQUASH
A true sign of warmer weather is the return of the summer squash. Standard green zucchini is always a hit, but we also enjoy growing patty pan squash. They are the shape of a flying saucer and have scalloped edges. We love to cut them in half and roast them with a little cheese.

The last planting of carrots happens in April. There are a surprising variety of seeds to choose from and quite a few different kinds of orange carrots, but we enjoy growing purple, yellow, red and white carrots. The bright colors liven up any salad. PEPPERS
We grow both hot and sweet varieties of peppers. This spring, we will have green, yellow, orange and red bell peppers, as well as the same variety of colors in the smaller, sweet snacking peppers. Like eggplant, peppers can be kept alive and productive for a few seasons with a little harsh weather protection.
MRS. BURNS' FAMOUS LEMON BASIL
This delicious basil is offered by Native Seeds/SEARCH in Tucson. It’s a heat-loving basil and has the unmistakable smell and flavor of fresh lemons. It pairs great with fish, or you can soak it in vodka for a refreshing cocktail. All basils grow well in the Valley and can be planted through May.

REFRESH YOUR LIFE THE PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL BENEFITS OF SPRING CLEANING ARTICLE ALISON STANTON feeling calmer to sleeping better, decluttering and organizing has a tangible impact on our emotional and physical health—starting with the air that we breathe. “When you declutter, you are finally able to give your home the deep, thorough cleaning it desperately needs,” says Winter, who serves clients in Chandler and the surrounding areas. “You can now dust, vacuum and really get in those corners and wipe them down. This will improve the overall air quality in your home and be much healthier for your upper respiratory system.” In addition to improving the air quality in a home, having less “stuff” lying around will also allow people to breathe easier because they feel less stressed. “Seeing clear, empty space just instantly calms you down and makes you feel better,” says Winter. “You will feel less stressed, have more focus and clarity, and you will sleep better.” For people who have “TMS,” or “Too Much Stuff” syndrome, Winter says they should take an honest look at the multitude of their possessions. “There’s a famous saying, ‘The more things you own, the more they own you.’ This is very true. The more stuff you have, makes it extremely difficult to keep track of,” says Winter. If it is challenging to find what you need, when you need it—or when you are reluctant to have friends and family over because of a messy house—those are key signs that it is time to step back and formulate a plan to conquer clutter. “Clutter can make you feel overwhelmed, anxious, angry, frustrated, embarrassed, ashamed and just totally depressed,” says Winter. Organizing your home can also help restore a sense of order in your life. Once people get rid of the items they

THREE EASY STEPS FOR A MORE ORGANIZED HOME STEP 1:
Sort. Organize and sort your items
into
categories.
Take
everything out of the area you are working in, whether it’s a junk drawer in the kitchen, linen closet or the garage. Now, think “like with like” and place similar items together. Have fun making the categories, too! STEP 2:
Purge. The only way to create space is to purge. Even though it can be hard, let go of items you no longer need, want or wear. Ask yourself, “Do you wear it? Do you use it? Do you really need it? Do you love it?” If the answer is no and the item is still good, donate it. Be tough—love it or lose it! STEP 3:
Find a home for every item. Once you’ve decided you are keeping something, you then must decide where that item is going to live. Benjamin Franklin coined the mantra of Professional Organizers, “A place for everything and everything in its place.”

f you have lived in the Valley for a while, you’ve probably heard about the legendary Singh Farms in Scottsdale. Owners Ken and Lee Singh closed their weekly farmer’s market and brought it to
Tempe, where the 72-acre Rio Salado Golf Course operated for 30 years. Now, the Singh’s are slowly transforming the property into an organic farm, community market and one-stop-happening.

Singh Meadows opened this past January, combining a wonderful Farmer’s Market with a bakery, gourmet Café, Juice Bar, Coffee Bar and picnic area. Over the past three years, Singh has diligently been prepping the soil by flushing out the chemicals used by the golf course and adding nutrients in order to grow organic vegetables. Singh, a community leader and an entrepreneur, is now back to taking care of the earth, a passion he loves to share with everyone as a leading soil expert who produces his own compost.
A WEEKEND HAPPENING
Joining Singh Meadows to run the Café are the talented Chefs Jay Bogsinske and Frank Belosic. Chef Bogsinske has worked at the St. Francis in Phoenix, The Phoenician, Sheraton Downtown, District American Kitchen, LGO and Chelsea's Kitchen. Chef Belosic's 25 years of experience includes being Executive Chef at The Phoenician, and later at the Sheraton Downtown, plus owning a restaurant in California. “We’re back to doing what we love,” explains Chef Belosic about working with Bogsinske. “That’s touching every piece of food that goes through the kitchen”. Dan Medlen runs the bakery, offering an assortment of breads and pastries, including pretzel rolls. The Singh’s son, Kehar, is in charge of the Juice Bar, creating healthy, fresh-squeezed juices with pineapple, ginger, apple, kale and tropical beet, to name a few of the ingredients. There’s also organic coffee for the coffee lovers. The made-to-order breakfasts, lunches and snacks are incredible, and definitely worth waiting in line to order. The menu selections change weekly, depending on what is being harvested. However, it's guaranteed that each week they will tantalize your taste buds with items like farmhouse quiche; homemade muesli; smoked salmon on toast; golden beet arugula salad with buffalo mozzarella; caramelized onion and arugula pizza; grilled cheese sandwiches; golden beet soup and a farmer’s veggie purse, all prepared by gourmet chefs while you watch. Singh’s vast experience has taken him full circle, and with opening Singh Meadows, he is able to share his wonderful, organic vegetables with the community while educating them about the importance of good earth. “I’ve cleaned up the pond, added fish, a walking path, fire pits and more so families can come and enjoy good food and nature,” says Singh. “For a couple of hours, they can relax and forget they’re in the middle of a busy city.”

Dive Right In GET YOUR POOL READY FOR SUMMER WITH SHASTA POOLS ARTICLE KORY KILMER
I
t is no secret that Valley residents love their pools. And with the spring and summer heat officially knocking at the door again, the time has finally arrived for homeowners to make sure they have all their pool needs met before cooling off and enjoying the refreshing water. No one has helped to define the swimming pool scene in Arizona quite like Shasta Pools, who, for the last fifty years, has built more than 83,000 pools and remodeled another 33,000, making them the ideal place to call before things get too hot. “That’s more than all the rest of our competition has built, combined. And all in the Phoenix area,” says Darin Barney, Director of Marketing for Shasta Pools.
42
Chandler Lifestyle | April 2017
After building 26 swimming pools that first year, founder Bob Ast brought his brother Skip aboard for the next year, and sales jumped to 235 pools. Sales more than doubled again in year three, which was when Shasta officially became the state’s largest swimming pool builder, a title they have held on to ever since. Today, Skip is still in charge, and Shasta’s impressive client list includes The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation, Arizona State University, Talking Stick Resort and Casino, and Hyatt Regency. They have also expanded to include a division dedicated to pool service and repair. Yet, despite all the company’s success and growth, they have held onto their family-owned roots, including a personal touch that has remained the company’s passion. “We are a bunch of families serving families,” adds Barney. “We survey every customer, and if someone is not overwhelmingly satisfied with their pool, we go back out and we make it right. Everything about that customer service piece rings true throughout the organization.” Shasta Pools believes that a core part of customer service is to position themselves at the forefront of excellence within the industry. They have received over 500 design awards as custom pool builders, and all their pools are powered by state-of-the-art equipment that has been recognized for its innovation in regards to energy efficiency. Also a member of the invitation-only Master Pool Guild, Shasta Pools is part of a global network dedicated to pushing their industry forward through superior design, professionalism, quality and collaboration. The resulting swimming pools are among the very best in the world, and the Shasta Pools standard. For more information, please visit ShastaPools.com.
