Memories of Home

MARCH 2017

A

lthough I’ve lived on the West Coast for almost 15 years now, I always look back at my childhood home in a small little Connecticut town with a sense of nostalgia. Maybe it’s because I spent my carefree years of youth there, or maybe it’s because I lived there the longest of any place so far. Either way, I will always consider that cheerful white house with its bright red door and shutters and large oak tree in the front yard my true home. This year, that sense of nostalgia came on full-force when I visited my father over the holidays and we decided to watch old home movies. As soon as that house flashed up on the screen, a flood of memories came washing over me. It seemed as if I could feel the flickering flames of the grand fireplace cast their hot glow on my face as I snuggled up on the couch; and could smell the aroma of pumpkin spice wafting through the kitchen as I helped my mom bake pie while the fall leaves fell outside. I couldn’t help but smile as I thought of all the memories that house held, and couldn’t help feel a little ache of longing once the videos were over. As I sat on the couch, deep in thought, my dad called me in to help him prepare Christmas dinner. We then spent the rest of the evening laughing and talking while making tons of Italian food and enjoying every last bite until our hearts, and stomachs, were content before sitting down to a Christmas movie marathon. A few weeks later, I was thinking about the time I spent with my father over Christmas, and much to my surprise, felt that same sense of nostalgia as I did when thinking about my childhood home. I then realized it’s not the place the makes the memories, but the people you are with and the cherished moments you spend with them; and that’s a lesson I will take with me no matter where I go. In the “Home Issue” of Chandler Lifestyle we take a look at some of the wonderful people and businesses dedicated to creating homes and spaces where these memories can be made, such as Dena Thomas Designs, Starwood Custom Homes, Pioneer and Walsh Woodworking. Thank you for enriching our communities in such beautiful ways!

I

n the early 1980s, four local property owners had a dream: to create a beautiful, water-filled oasis in the middle of a desert.

As City Planner at the City of

Chandler, Jeff Kurtz, notes, the Dobson, Bogle, Lockheed and Smith families joined their properties in south Chandler together to create the master planned Ocotillo community. Since then, the popular Chandler neighborhood, which covers a 6-squaremile area, has earned a well-deserved reputation for being an ideal place to live. With its 167 acres of lakes and an impressive 17 miles of shoreline, Ocotillo offers area residents plenty of gorgeous waterfront views. Although Ocotillo is technically home to 29 lakefront communities, each lake is sourced from one contiguous body of reclaimed water, and all are connected by an elaborate underground pipe system. “Water, even when treated, is a prized resource in Arizona, but the vision for the Ocotillo community included lakes, and lots of them,” Kurtz says. “With this in mind, one of the first completed projects had to be a sewage treatment plant that treated the reclaimed water; this project was privately held until it was turned over to the City.” If you would love to live on a quiet

of

Ocotillo listed by Jason Dawson of Chandler Local Listing Pros, a part of Realty Executives. This home boasts relaxing lakeside views from multiple rooms and includes three master suites, a movie theatre, and butler prep area with additional kitchen storage. “The kitchen is open and features brand new, slate-finished appliances and refrigerator, ample cabinet and countertop space, a kitchen island, double ovens, gas cook top, walk-in pantry and views out to the backyard

and lake,” Dawson says.

The main master suite is privately located upstairs and offers stunning lake and mountain views, a private office, balcony, soaking tub, walk-in shower and large walk-in closet. “The backyard is amazing with its covered patio, wrap-around viewing deck, diving pool with water feature, built in BBQ, sunken trampoline, private dock, lakefront fire pit and an RV gate,” Dawson describes. This home truly offers waterfront living at its finest. If finding a waterfront home in the middle of the desert interests you, Jason and his wife, Tanya, are Chandler/Ocotillo residents and waterfront experts. As Dawson says, being a waterfront specialist involves a lot more than just being familiar with Ocotillo—it also requires experience and a special skill set for pricing properties. “For the most part, the homes and the locations sell themselves, but valuing and pricing them correctly is vitally important,” he says. “It also requires a top-notch marketing plan. Chandler waterfront homes are a perfect fit in our experience of marketing and selling homes quickly and for top dollar.” For more information about the Exeter Street property, please contact Jason Dawson at 480.620.8874, or visit LocalListingPro.com. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN

building a custom home *Align yourself with the correct designer or architect for the project, particularly one who listens, communicates clearly and responds to your vision. *Go through an interview process to articulate your “must haves” as well as your “wish list”. *Find an architect/builder who will offer suggestions and alternatives within your budget. * Make sure you have a good rapport and compatibility factor with your architect/builder, as you will be working very closely with this person for a length of time, which can occasionally be stressful. *Find the correct lot for the design of your home. *Your builder should be able to assist you in securing the correct financing for your project. *Prepare yourself! This process involves lots of decision making, large money expenditures, and the inevitable “hiccups”.

L ANDSCAPING FIVE KEY GUIDELINES TO HELP YOU START YOUR PROJECT

1. Search websites like Pinterest and YouTube for ideas. Bring photos to the Pioneer store and talk with a representative who will advise you on what you should do on your own and what you should hire help for. They’ll also make suggestions on products so you can create a more personalized and unique look. 2. Draw your project on graph paper and scale your design, staying away from a box or square look. Many materials can be cut to form curves or already come in a curved shape, which adds more interest. 3. Don’t skip the prep work; lay down landscape fabric to prevent weeds from creeping up under pavers, gravel and decorative rock. Spending the time up front and leveling the ground will save a lot of time in the long run. 4. Don’t be afraid to use color and textures in your materials. A combination of the two will create an awesome, custom look. Splashes of accent colors help make a project look more exciting. 5. Accessorize your yard by bringing in ceramic pieces, pots, metal yard art, beach pebbles, a firepit and/or water feature. These are the finishing touches that will make a simply nice-looking yard into a fabulous one.

WOODEN WONDERS

N

ine years ago, Chandler couple Kelly and Kris Walsh began a small, hobby-like woodworking business together. Their first project was a toy

box for their eldest child; Kelly thought of the concept and Kris brought it to life. “As the years went on, Kris’ skills in woodworking improved, and we began to make key pieces of furniture, including our consoles and farmhouse tables,” says Kelly Walsh. “We’ve technically been in business about nine years, but about a year ago, Walsh Woodworking became our family’s sole source of income.” A former in-home daycare owner, Walsh says that

WALSH WOODWORKING GROWS FROM HOBBY TO FULL-FLEDGED BUSINESS VENTURE

many factors contributed to the family’s leap of faith when it came to deciding to be full-time, independent business owners. Before this venture, Kris worked as a district manager for a local company.

ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON

“Business was booming and I felt like I had run my course with the daycare,” Walsh says. “We had our third—and last— child, and I wanted to have more dedicated time with him. We decided to take the best chance we could, do it together, and be our own bosses.” So far, the bet they made has paid off, as Walsh Woodworking has quickly become a favorite among locals looking for custom wooden furniture and decorative pieces. “We have no stock; everything is 100-percent custom and made when it’s ordered,” Walsh explains. “The only place we advertise is Facebook; I’d say that 90-percent of our business comes from referrals.” Walsh attributes their growing customer base to the fact that “my husband is a type A perfectionist,” she says with a laugh. “We try to be the kind of company that we’d hire; we’ll turn down jobs if we don’t think we can do a satisfactory job.” Walsh notes that some of their most popular products include console tables, dining tables, farmhouse-style tables and floating shelves. The company’s wood walls—which come in a variety of color options and include labor, materials and installation—are also growing in popularity. They do everything from custom signs with inspirational sayings to built-in desks and custom entry pieces. Just like when they built their first toy chest, Kris still handles the building while Walsh does much of the design work. And, while being small business owners has its challenges, Walsh says that they wouldn’t change a thing. “We get to be our own bosses and be in charge of our own schedule. For example, today [the day of the interview] I was at a field trip for my kids, but if we need to build all weekend to catch up on orders, we can do that too,” she says. Looking to the future, Walsh says that they plan to continue to grow their business organically and will introduce apparel and merchandise soon to build brand awareness. In addition to woodworking, their ultimate goal is to attain the licensing and bonding needed to flip homes. To learn more about Walsh Woodworking, find them on Facebook at Facebook.com/WalshWoodWorking.
