The creation of Antiguo Lobo came forth in bursts of creativity. Jesus Oñate's tribute wall, dedicated to his father and namesake, Jesus Oñate Aguirre, is no exception. “I had no idea what it was going to look like,” Jesus shared. “I was just forming it as I was going - with memories.” From growing up in his father’s restaurants to honing his love of cooking in Mexico, this space seeks to honor both past and present.

A son looking up to his father is nothing new, but Jesús Oñate found a tangible way to look to his father with a tribute wall depicting memories of his life.

“I was just forming it as I was going - with memories.”

During the restaurant’s construction, Jesus saw the large blank wall go up and suddenly knew a mural would be perfect. “The restaurant was always going to be in honor of my father,” Jesus says. “From day one, that was what I always wanted to do.” Set in the heart of Chamblee, this location was the only option, as it’s the city where Jesus’ father opened his first restaurant in the 1970s. “I wanted to do a full circle…go to where he started,” Jesus shared. Pablo, a friend from Mexico for almost a decade, came on as his muralist and collaborator. Throughout the design process, Jesus sent ideas as they came to him, and in the end, only very minor adjustments were needed to reach its final iteration.

The mural exudes an energetic power that's felt even without a cognitive understanding of every detail of its design. Shocks of sparkling orange juxtapose black cityscapes, laying the groundwork for the multicolored images to shine forth. The top left features Santo Toribio, a saint who is said to protect immigrants. Jesus’ father carried and kept his image everywhere: in his wallet, on his shelves, and across walls. Just below Santo Toribio is a neon purple rendering of El Cerro de la Silla, a mountain range representing Monterrey, Mexico. His father’s Monterrey restaurant chain is one of his greatest legacies to the Atlanta food scene.

Seemingly driving out from the center of the mountain range is a bright white 1977 Pontiac Can-Am. This depicts his father’s first brand-new car purchase, a symbol of the success he built from the ground up; the family still owns the vehicle to this day.

Floating upwards out of the mountain range is Jorge Campos, the all-famous Mexican goalkeeper, whom Jesus, his father, and brother saw play live at the 1994 World Cup. His custom-made uniform, drenched in the colors of the Mexican flag, shines brightly against the backdrop. Directly above Campos stands Emiliano Zapata, a Mexican Revolutionary of mythical proportions, honored in the name of the restaurant that kick-started his father’s culinary journey: Sapata.

Toward the top center are two pairs of “Luchadores,” Mexican wrestlers, bringing dual meanings to the mural. Firstly, they harken to one of his father’s restaurants in Gwinnett, Agave Cantina, where he commissioned a muralist to paint luchadores all over the interior walls, as a way to stand out from typical Mexican restaurant decor.

Secondly, Jesus wanted them included because “luchador” also translates to “fighter,” and symbolizes his father’s true fighting spirit; he migrated to the U.S. with nothing to his name and built a successful life through pure grit and talent.

The number three stands in prominence to represent his father’s lucky soccer number. The numeral is so significant, so deeply reminiscent of his father, that Jesus has it tattooed on his arm. Sprouting from the top of the number is an agave plant. They’re placed in numerous spots across the mural, in reference to Los Altos de Jalisco, their native land, known distinctly for its tequila production.

At the top right is a donkey, mid-bray, as a tribute to his father’s Carrollton restaurant, The Lazy Donkey. This particular project struck a chord with Jesus, as a massive undertaking his father chose to enter in his twilight years. It wasn’t out of necessity, thus demonstrating his capacity for sacrifice, perseverance, and unending ambition. Jesus witnessed the toll it took on his father and learned from its resounding impact, while still being in awe of the beautiful product created.

Two city skylines round out the mural: Chicago, where his father first immigrated and learned all about the food industry, and Atlanta, where he settled and made his everlasting mark.

Two fish float in the lower center, referencing his father’s love of fishing at his pond in Newnan.

Jesus feels the game of fishing, waiting for just the right moment to earn your prize, reflects his father’s life of auspicious patience. The bottom right features an aerial view of a sombrero, nodding to the family’s heritage in Jalisco and their cultural connection to mariachi music.

Significantly, a partial wolf face looks out at the top right, representing the mural’s home restaurant, Antiguo Lobo, which translates to “Old Wolf.” The old wolf symbolizes a person whose great knowledge is hard-won, not gained from formal education, but through the trials and tribulations of a life well-lived.

In that sense, Antiguo Lobo’s name and mural provide a daily source of inspiration. “You can’t quit, you can’t stop,” Jesus intones. “And even when things get difficult, I have a different kind of motivation.”

We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Pickle

In A

I’ve spent years searching for the perfect wing flavor, never quite satisfied, until I heard a podcast suggestion: brining chicken wings in pickle juice. It sounded strange at first, but it yields incredibly tender and flavorful wings! Since then, I save pickle juice from every jar I buy just to recreate these beloved wings. If I run out of pickle juice, olive juice works too. I air fry mine, but if you don’t have an air fryer, cook them as you normally would. Don’t forget to toss them in a buttery dill sauce and try the Alabama white BBQ sauce for an extra layer of goodness!

Pickle Juice Brined Wings INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

2 pounds chicken wings (flats and drumettes) Pickle juice - enough to cover wings 1 – 2 teaspoons garlic salt ¼ teaspoon pepper 6 tablespoons butter A few dashes of hot sauce 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place chicken wings in a non-reactive container and pour pickle juice over chicken wings until completely covered.

2. Place it in the fridge and let it marinate, covered, for at least 8 hours.

3. Drain wings, discard pickle juice, and completely pat wings dry.

4. Put dried wings in a bowl and sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper.

Mix well.

5. Place wings in an air fryer basket, being careful not to crowd. Cook at 400 degrees for 28 minutes, turning every 8 minutes until crispy. If you don’t have an air fryer, bake them in the oven for 35 - 40 minutes at 400 degrees, flipping halfway through.

6. Melt the butter and add a few splashes of hot sauce of your choice and mix in a bowl. Add wings and completely cover with butter mixture.

Sprinkle with fresh dill and toss a few times, and serve with my white barbeque sauce.

CHAMBLEE MAYOR BRIAN MOCK TELLS US WHAT MAKES CHAMBLEE THE BEST COMMUNITY TO CALL HOME

As we celebrate the gentlemen in the community, Chamblee City Lifestyle turned to Chamblee Mayor Brian Mock. Brian Mock was first elected to Chamblee City Council in November of 2013 where he served for eight years and appointed as Mayor Pro Tempore by his peers three of those years. He was elected Mayor of Chamblee in 2021. Here’s what Mayor Mock had to say about the city he calls “the best community in the world.”

Mayor Mock recalls that mayors often say if you don’t believe your city is the best city in the world, you probably shouldn’t be serving as mayor. “I find this to be an accurate statement,” he says. “I certainly believe Chamblee to be amongst the best cities in the world, and I can’t imagine calling another place home.”

For Mayor Mock, it all boils down to some important questions such as, Is our city one that you feel good about coming home to at the end of the day? Is it a good place to raise kids? Is it friendly and welcoming? Given the urban environment, is it clean, and do we feel safe? “For me, it’s a resounding yes, and I hope our residents feel the same,” he says.

Mayor Mock says he also realizes things aren’t perfect. “Even the best places, the best people, have challenges,” Mayor Mock says.

As for challenges, like most cities across the nation, Mayor Mock says housing affordability is one of our biggest burdens. “Finding a home is tough enough,” he says. “Finding one that's affordable is even more difficult. I’ve always said if you want to call Chamblee home, I want you to be able to. Given that, we completed the Chamblee Housing Study and identified priority strategies to preserve affordability and expand housing options.”

Mayor Mock believes in smart, planned growth, while protecting existing housing and being mindful of displacement.

“Urban renewal in my mind is improving livability without destroying established neighborhoods. This is why I’m very protective and cautious when folks approach me about projects along the Buford Highway corridor.”

And Mayor Mock recalls a time not too long ago, when there wasn’t much activity in downtown Chamblee. “As a downtown resident, I [would] walk my dog at night and hardly encountered a soul, he says. “Now, I don’t get as far on my walks, as I’m constantly encountering people along the way to talk with." And as for new businesses? “Who would’ve ever thought we would have a dozen restaurants often with lines extending out the door," Mayor Mock says.

“And who would've thought we would have a trail network leading to our neighborhoods allowing the ability to walk to these great places and not have to get into our cars? It’s happening, folks.”

With more people choosing to call Chamblee home, Mayor Mock says enhanced walking trails, outdoor spaces, parks and improved infrastructure benefit all of us, and he urges residents to venture over to Dresden Park. “As some may know, the city received $12 million in COVID ARPA funding.

Investing all of this into Dresden Park and transforming it into what it is today is one of my proudest accomplishments while serving," he says. "I also want to thank our citizens for approving our request for a parks bond to fund $30 million of future improvements to many of our parks and trails, including Keswick and Huntley Hills. Amazing things are on the horizon for our parks and green space.”

Mayor Mock says things that keep him awake at night include the unhoused population – especially those who are chronically homeless and those with mental health conditions, and as one of the most diverse cities in the state, inclusivity in an environment where that’s not always the case anymore. But he says he knows the city well as a community and as neighbors. "I know we will all get through it, together," he says. “And in that spirit, I appreciate those who are involved, willing to give of their time and talents to continue to build a better Chamblee. And I encourage those who are not actively involved to find small ways within your neighborhood and within the community to pitch in.

It’s all of us working together, the small things, that make Chamblee the best place to live, to work and to play. It takes a village, I’m grateful to our city council, our city staff, those who serve on our boards and authorities, and our community members as a whole. All of the things that I believe to be great about our city are only possible through us all working together toward the common goal to live in the best community in the world.”

How one dog with a ‘legendar y spirit’ is an inspiration of optimism and motivation

It's been said that a dog is a man's best friend. That's certainly true for Chamblee resident Thomas Veith and his dog Weston.

In our February 2026 issue, we ran a preview of the Bulldog Dash 5k race. Thomas, and his then fiancé, Kaylee Goss, Junebug, and Weston were featured in an image that ran with the story. Thomas connected with us to share what a legendary dog Weston was, how Weston impacted his life, and why he wasn't surprised to see Weston's picture in the magazine .

Thomas adopted Weston, a spirited 65-pound black Labrador mix, from a rescue shelter in 2017. At the time, Weston was estimated to be about a year and a half. Later through a DNA testing site, Thomas would find out Weston’s exact age was only about nine months old at the time of the adoption.

Thomas describes Weston’s energy as uncontainable. “He was just so excited about everything,” Thomas recalls. “He was curious…this kind of intoxicating positivity of joy and excitement. There weren’t many things we found him to be afraid of.” On outings, Weston was never the dog to sit down and just chill. Thomas says Weston was always on his feet seeing who he could get a pat, or perhaps, a treat from. Thomas also describes Weston as fearless. “He had this fearless presence,” Thomas says. “Nothing really gave him pause.”

One outing the family particularly enjoyed is the Bulldog Dash 5K, as the route runs

close to their house. Thomas says their first Bulldog Dash 5K was in 2024, and they saw other people had their dogs at the start of the race. They ran back to the house, leashed Weston and their dog, Junebug, and they went back to the race. “Both of our dogs were absolutely loving it,” Thomas says.

They loved it so much they made the race an annual family event.

Sadly, after being diagnosed in December 2025 with Hermangiosarcoma (HSA), a common form of cancer in large-breed dogs, Weston crossed over the rainbow bridge in late January. Days later, after receiving notifications from friends, Thomas saw an image

of their family from the prior year’s Bulldog Dash race highlighted in the February 2026 issue of Chamblee City Lifestyle magazine.

Thomas says seeing that image brought him an immense sense of gratitude. “To see him [Weston] there was just one of those things that was a little larger than life feeling, and I chalk it up to his legendary spirit,” Thomas says. “These things just happened to him.

It was a big reminder to go do things, and don’t be afraid to go for it.”

Motivated by the optimism he learned from Weston, Thomas realizes now it's his opportunity to give back to the community while honoring Weston. Thomas started by having a pet station in Weston’s honor at the 2026 Bulldog Dash 5K, where he says he met new friends and neighbors. “…Dogs bring people together,” Thomas says, even though he didn’t have his dog with him this time.

And Thomas continues to keep Weston’s optimism and motivation going as he finds ways to continue to honor Weston and bring awareness to HSA, something he only learned about once Weston was diagnosed.

"He truly had a legendary spirit," Thomas says, talking about Weston. "And it's going to live on, no matter what. There are so many positive characteristics I learned from him, and I want to keep bringing that to the world.

One of the biggest lessons he taught me is if you come with a positive attitude to everything that you do, you're going to have a great time, meet a bunch of great people, and have some great opportunities."
