Welcome Home!

Home. So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. Where we hang our hats. For most of us it’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars may look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”

As we thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people.

Through nearly three decades as a Navy Officer (active duty and reserve), I’ve had literally dozens and dozens of home mailing addresses, and I’ve also spent long periods of time away from places I thought of as home. I have memories from every single one of them whether it’s the people who I called my neighbors, the culture of the places I’ve lived, or what the weather was like. But the Chamblee area is where I’ve called home for nearly 12 years now, and I can honestly say, it’s one of my favorites out of all of them.

In putting together our annual Home issue, we feel like the lucky ones as we learned more about the businesses and individuals that comprise Chamblee, and we hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in this city, in your neighborhoods, and most all of - your homes.

Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

Happy March!

ZONE BLUE

What’s the secret to a happy, healthy, and long life? Believe it or not, it’s actually quite simple: There are no secret ingredients, no sizable expenditures, and absolutely zero manufactured elements of any kind. Dive in with us as we share insights from our interview with the internationally renowned Blue Zones Founder, National Geographic Explorer, and award-winning journalist who is revolutionizing the way Americans make choices that can lead to living your best life.

For over twenty years, Dan Buettner has been fully committed to studying the health and longevity of Americans as well as influencing the proper and attainable health-centric environments our communities should embody. What started with identifying five “blue zones” around the world where people are both living longer as well as enjoying a higher quality of life in their elder years has now also evolved into proactively creating eco-systems where our communities engage in setting the standard for clean health.

If you haven’t subscribed to watching “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones” streaming on Netflix, do yourself a favor and soak up the well-documented views into how Ikaria, Greece, Loma Linda, California, Sardinia, Italy, Okinawa, Japan, and Nicoya, Costa Rica exemplify the basis behind the Blue Zones truth and have since inspired Dan and his team to further extrapolate how we can manufacture healthy blue zone lifestyles in virtually any city and within our homes by way of intentional adaptation.

Most of us are well aware of the “American way of life” we reside in, that being one of convenience in all shapes and forms. We excel in offering the most fast food options in any country. We rank at the top of the most cars per household. We embrace a sedentary at-home lifestyle. And, for many of us, it stems from our childhood to no-fault of our own; comfort foods and Friday night pizza deliveries, complacent recliners and cushy car commutes. In short, however, now more than ever we categorically live in a country where processed foods and ultra-convenience, unfortunately, translate to life-threatening health diseases and a lack of organic joy.

What is the best news of all? All of these characteristics are wildly easy to overcome with effortless, yet conscious pivots to making better decisions with our time, our food, and our focus. Ask yourself: Are you driving or walking? Are you connecting socially? Set your sights on avoiding the majority of processed foods and start eating a largely whole-food and plant-based diet that will (statistically) give you another 10-12 years on your life.

In place of your toaster, keep a fruit bowl on the counter. Create a low-level junk food drawer. Stop buying processed meat, potato chips, sweetened snacks like cookies and candies, and worst of all, sugar-sweet beverages, and start buying more beans, nuts, grains, and tea.

“Am I going to tell you to never have these? No, people deserve to treat themselves. But you’ll do yourself an enormous favor if you just don’t bring those into your home. If you want to go out for those treats, go ahead,” Dan says.

“Simply just don’t bring them home, and you’ll cut out 70-80% of consumption right there.”

Buettner’s first cookbook, The Blue Zones Kitchen, is a fantastic resource featuring ingredients and cooking methods that can increase longevity, wellness, and mental health. The recipes also include lifestyle tips such as proper portion sizes and the best times to eat dinner. Plus, check out his additional seven books that dig deep into the exact foods you should eat to how your circle of friends and family can influence your quality of life.

Who do you hang out with? Happiness is contagious. “The Blue Zone approach is to go through your contact base and think of some friends whose recreation is pickleball, biking, or gardening. Who will care about you on a bad day and have a meaningful conversation? Identify one or two friends who are vegan or vegetarian and show you how and where to eat whole foods. Actively invite them out for lunch, and bring them into your social circle: this will have a bigger, long-term impact on your behavior than any new diet or exercise, and it costs you zero. Plus, there is a ton of data that shows it works, and it’s long-term.”

“We are marketed the idea that if we change our behavior by exercising more, taking the right supplements, trying this longevity or that anti-aging hack, that we will

lose weight and get healthy, yet it never works for the longterm,” says Dan. The Blue Zones approach is not trying to change your behaviors, it is asking you to change your surroundings…your eco-system.

Every time you go out to eat, you will consume an extra 300 calories that are laden with more sodium, sugar, and oil than eating at home. “Get your hands on a plant-based cookbook, pick a dozen recipes, and cook those with your family on Sundays. If you make the effort to cook it with your family, you will gain the skills and learn to make some good and whole food plant-based recipes.”

And, we would be remiss not to attend to the travelers at heart who would love to indulge in a luxurious resort paired with the facets of an actual Blue Zones destination. Dan highly recommends seeking out Silvestre in Nosara, Costa Rica where the experience offers wellness programming, fully-equipped kitchens, and outdoor activities that will fuel your inspiration for a healthier life.

Tap into Dan’s wisdom that is creating a new category of places that are not merely the legacy of a healthy culture, but more consciously created by enlightened individuals that are intent on supercharging healthier communities!

Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space... TIPS FOR DECORATING WITH NATURAL MATERIALS

Houzz contributor Katie Treggiden offers many ways to incorporate natural materials and natural-state timber into your home, including using wood to cover one wall in a home for a pleasing accent wall; featuring your firewood as a striking, stacked display; and mixing different types of wood and different finishes in the same space. “A simple way to incorporate the wood trend is to expose structural wooden beams already present in your home,” Katie says. “Instead of painting them or boxing them in, leave them raw or give them a coat of wax to enrich the tones.”

DESIGNING NEW HOMES

Trends in custom built homes

Building homes is something Jonathan Head says he always wanted to do. He started Head Homes as his passion project while he worked full-time for a large construction company. Eventually, he followed his passion and made the leap into entrepreneurship with Head Homes as his full-time endeavor.

DECOR TRENDS | HOME + DESIGN
20
Natural stone is being used throughout new homes.
“We strive to build the highest level of quality homes in our neighborhoods.”

Jonathan Head, owner of Head Homes

Jonathan describes the homes he builds as transitional, custom-built homes. “Our niche is building higher-end homes,” he says. “Our clients know they’re getting a truly custom home that’s different from anyone else’s home. We’re a full-service company. We manage the construction process from the initial design, through the entire build, until we receive a Certificate of Occupancy and turn the keys over to our clients. And that’s what we do…We strive to build the highest level of quality homes in our neighborhoods.”

As a Chamblee resident, Jonathan says he finds focusing on building homes in Chamblee and in nearby Brookhaven makes the most sense, especially since he’s familiar with the processes and city ordinances. “It just makes sense that we try to keep our homes as close together as possible,”

he says. “That way we can spend as much time as possible at the homes we are building to ensure the highest quality.”

After working many years in construction and a decade of building custom homes, Jonathan knows firsthand what homebuyers are looking for. So we asked Jonathan to share some of the latest trends he’s seeing when it comes to custom built homes.

OPEN FLOOR PLANS

According to Jonathan, most clients still opt for an open space concept with an informal dining room along with a large island where the family can eat meals together or grab a quick bite. This leaves space for what Jonathan refers to as a “flex room” that’s often used as a playroom or can be used as a sitting room or a home office.

CONTINUED >
21 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/CHAMBLEE MARCH 2024
Many families are opting to eat around the kitchen island.

COLOR

Before, Jonathan says, paint colors included bright white, along with grays and black. Now he says colors are trending more toward warm and cream tones, along with moody colors for powder rooms and home offices. When it comes to flooring, he says he’s seeing warmer tones there as well.

CURVED LINES

Custom homebuyers are looking for softer, curved lines. Jonathan says where you would see typical drywall corners, he’s using more baby bullnose corners. He says he’s also creating more arches throughout the homes, and creating radius islands, kitchen islands with rounded corners.

DRYWALL BEAMS AND TRIM WORK

Where there are often exposed wood beams on the ceiling, he is now adding drywall beams instead. Drywall beams still add interest without appearing too heavy and give context and curvature to the ceiling. He says he’s also painting baseboards walls, ceilings, and trim work in the same color, for more of a monochromatic look. And crown molding is now a thing of the past with the new transitional style.

REEDED AND FLUTED DETAILS

Using reeded finishes on areas like drawers and cabinet fronts is becoming more popular, as well as using fluted style glass. These details offer a ribbed look that can add texture and interest to any room.

BRASS FIXTURES

Jonathan says he’s seeing a lot of brass in the way of plumbing fixtures, hardware for cabinets, and brass accented light fixtures.

NATURAL STONE

Natural stone, such as Italian marble, is being used throughout new homes. Jonathan says that instead of using traditional tile for backsplashes, the same natural stone that’s used on countertops is being used for the backsplash as well to eliminate grout joints for a clean and seamless transition.

FLOORING

In some cases, fun patterns, like herringbone for a dining area, are being used to separate spaces.

DECOR TRENDS | HOME + DESIGN

“Our clients know they’re getting a truly custom home that’s different from anyone else’s home.” Jonathan Head, owner of Head Homes

EXTERIOR

Jonathan says the farmhouse style isn’t as popular as it once was. The new designs are incorporating steep roof pitches, brick details such as arches, flairs and buttress walls, along with stone accents. He says he’s also using wood siding accents as well. And homebuyers continue to like the look of painted brick.

@headhomesatl

Jonathan knows that for many clients, building a new home can be stressful with a lot of decisions to make, and his goal is to make the process as enjoyable and as easy as possible. Ultimately, he says his reward is seeing the landscape in a

neighborhood change for the better and knowing he had something to do with it.

Head Homes is a full-service, custom home builder. Designing

Outdoor Kitchens Outdoor Kitchen must-haves
SEASONAL SETUPS | HOME + DESIGN Visit Brandon at Ace Hardware in Chamblee.
26

With springtime around the corner, it’s time to think about outdoor kitchens. Whether you’re designing a new outdoor kitchen or updating an existing one, having the option to cook and dine al fresco is just one of the many perks of living in the South.

There are benefits to cooking outdoors. Summertime heat keeps the air conditioners blowing full blast, even without the additional heat from a stove or an oven. Cooking outdoors keeps smelly food odors outside. And it’s nice to enjoy nature.

Brandon Moss, manager of Ace Hardware in Chamblee, is also known as “the Grill Guru.” He has some tips for us as we think about cooking outdoors.

GRILLS

Brandon says there are three types of grills to consider.

• Charcoal – The Kamado Style cookers are the most versatile. This includes many brands and price points, including Big Green Egg that offers a Lifetime Warranty.

• Pellet – Known for its ease of use

• True Offset – Can be time-consuming

LOCATION OF THE GRILL

If considering the popular natural gas grill, Brandon says to make sure the natural gas line runs to the spot where you want your grill. When adding a natural gas line, think about where you want your grill before you run the line.

Choose from a number of options when designing your outdoor kitchen.

Consider ventilation and adequate space from any structures to avoid fire or discoloration from smoke. And if you’re going to use any type of technology integration, make sure there’s covering to protect the grill and technology from rain and other elements.

GRILL ACCESSORIES

• A Rotisserie Unit

• Infrared Searing Station

• Basket

• Roasting Pan

Having these accessories allows you to use the grill when cooking a wide variety of foods. Side burners are available for cooking vegetables and foods not suitable for grilling.

Most grills can be used in a variety of ways to cook most any foods.

OTHER OUTDOOR COOKING MUST-HAVES

PIZZA OVENS

Who doesn’t like to make their own pizza with their favorite toppings? Brandon says the important things to look for in pizza ovens are temperature and how it cooks. Types of pizza ovens include gas, pellet, and wood fired. Brandon says gas versions tend to be the most popular because of convenience.

GRIDDLES

Brandon says outdoor griddles can be purchased as free-standing units, while some grills have griddle inserts that can be purchased separately. Griddles are great for cooking foods like pancakes, fried rice (think hibachi), and more. They are easy to use, but they need to be maintained similar to cast iron.

THERMOMETERS

Instant Read Thermometers are used for cooking meat, poultry, and fish. This thermometer takes the guesswork out of cooking while reading the temperature of the food in record time. Brandon calls this the number one tool to have in any kitchen, inside or outside.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Thermometers – Brandon says Bluetooth versions have an average range of about 30 feet, while top-end versions have a range of about 100 feet. Wi-Fi versions connect to the cloud and have no limit. It’s a matter of need, price, and preference.

FIRE PITS

Brandon recommends a smokeless fire pit, so you can carry on a conversation while sitting by the fire. You can also purchase grates that cover the top of the fire pit so you can use it like an open grill. And as an added bonus, get out your skewers and roast some marshmallows for dessert!

GRILLING TOOLS

Brandon suggests a number of grilling tools to use. They include a good pair of gloves that can withstand high heat, a set of tongs, a good spatula, a baster, and a nylon brush or scrubbing pad for cleaning your grill after use.

Building a Community

Building a community is intentional. Building a community takes a plan. Then it takes strategy, people, and other resources to execute the plan. And that’s exactly what’s happening in Chamblee. City staff and officials are designing and creating a community – a safe, active and vibrant community that residents can be proud to call home. They have a plan and they’re executing the plan.

Jimmy Furst, councilmember at-large for the city of Chamblee, facilitated a Town Hall meeting to review the accomplishments in 2023 and talk a little bit about 2024, and what the future has in store for Chamblee residents.

Furst says just of few achievements in 2023 include the passing of a short-term rental ordinance for rentals less than 180 days, the alcohol ordinance, the ride-share ordinance that designates a specific area for picking up and dropping off in the city’s downtown district to ensure safety, and the massage ordinance, just to name a few.

In June 2023, the city announced the opening of the city’s Open Container District in the Downtown Entertainment District that went into effect later in the summer. Furst cited this as an economic development tool for the city.

The city began its participation in the Sister City Program and its relationship with the city of Kovel, Ukraine as part of Sister Cities International. With the adoption of the resolution to be a part of the program, Chamblee held a Book Drive to bring what Jimmy called “slice of normalcy to the people of Ukraine," sending the books collected for a much needed respite.

CHAMBLEE ‘2023 YEAR IN REVIEW’
OUR TOWN | ARTS + CULTURE 32
Chamblee residents attend the Town Hall Meeting.

“Chamblee is not a place that tolerates hate,” Jimmy says. And in July 2023, Chamblee City Councilmembers adopted an antisemitism resolution that condemns antisemitism to ensure the safety of all residents in the city.

With the passing of SPLOST II on the November Ballot, Chamblee will be able to make improvements in many areas such as infrastructure, Parks and Recreation, Public Safety and more.

The city also held a number of programs and initiatives such as the Utility Box Project, the piano on the Rail Trail, new sculptures in key areas of the city, and more to keep Chamblee beautiful. And the city kept residents busy holding a number of successful events throughout the year such as the Chalk Walk, the Summer Concert Series, Live on Your Block, Third Spots, The July 4th Celebration, A Taste of Chamblee, and much more.

Arrow Creek Park was added and includes Pickleball and a mini soccer field. Jimmy says the restrooms in the park are organic and 100% sustainable.

Looking forward, city officials continue to look at the walkability of the city with the continued goal for Chamblee to be a pedestrian friendly city. The Chamblee Trail Master Plan is a strategic plan that eventually connects the city to other areas such as the Peachtree Creek Greenway. There are also plans to continue to add more sidewalks where needed to increase walkability. Jimmy says that sidewalks aren’t cheap, especially when utilities have to be moved.

Jimmy says there’s a lot more in store for 2024 including new security in the Downtown Entertainment District and other key areas of Chamblee in the way of Flock Safety Cameras. The cameras feature the ability to capture a vehicle’s license place as it enters an area and can provide police with information as needed for public safety.

“Chamblee is not a place that tolerates hate.” Jimmy Furst, Chamblee Councilmember At-Large. speaking on the Antisemitism resolution that was adopted by Chamblee City Council in 2023.

Look for more improvements in public safety, including a new K-9 program (a first for Chamblee), and other improvements in areas such as code enforcement, economic development, public works, parks, and more in 2024.

The city of Chamblee is already off to a good start in 2024 as recipient of the 2024 Visionary City Award granted by the Georgia Municipal Association in collaboration with Georgia Trend Magazine. This award recognizes Chamblee for its Nonprofit Partnership Program that empowers local nonprofits to address community needs.

As improvements continue into 2024 and Chamblee flourishes and continues to grow, it’s a place residents can be proud to call home.
