LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome to 2024! For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Chamblee City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. As one of the owners of local health food store Nuts ‘n Berries, health and healthy lifestyles have been at the forefront of my thoughts for nearly a decade. And I know that maintaining those things can be challenging, particularly given today’s “mile a minute” pace, frequent business travel for many, and conflicting message about what’s good for you and not good for you. I’ve always preached the message of “all things in moderation.” So do your best when it comes to health, fitness, and diet – and when the time comes, indulge yourself to go off the main path even if just for a few hours; and when you do…ENJOY IT. So in that spirit, keep in mind: When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is usually much more realistic. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner might not be the best choice, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy those beignets you’ve been wanting to try at Lagarde, or maybe one of the amazing desserts at The Alden. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

ORAL HEALTH 12

Most of us don’t like to go to the dentist. However, studies show that one’s oral health can have a big impact on one’s overall physical health. So that trip to the dentist may be more important than most of us realize.

Just by looking at a patient’s saliva, they can identify bacteria present in the mouth. And while all bacteria aren’t bad, Shannon explains there are five bacteria implicated in illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, can-

“WE WANT TO MAKE IT MORE COMFORTABLE FOR PATIENTS,” DR. SHANNON THORSTEINSON Shannon Thorsteinson DMD and owner of Wellspring Dental understands the connection between the two and wants to make a difference in the lives of her patients. And with the state-of-the-art technology available today, Shannon and her staff are doing just that! “We’re all trying to be healthy, but the mouth tends to be something we may not focus on,” Shannon says. “If a new patient comes in, we’re going to do all the normal things you think of, like taking x-rays and checking the gums. We’re also going to check for cavities. But we take it to another level. We’re going to take a sample of your saliva and look at it under a microscope.”

cer, Alzheimer’s, and even pregnancy complications and fertility. “My hope is that we can positively impact the lives of our patients. I don’t want inflammation or any infection in the mouth to be a reason a patient has one of those problems because they’re all preventable,” she says. Wellspring Dental welcomes infants, children, and adults, and promotes early intervention and preventive care focusing on airway health, cosmetic dentistry, and general dentistry. “I like to emphasize that we’re regular dentists who go the extra mile,” Shannon says. Another way they go the extra mile is patient comfort. Shannon realizes it’s often hard for some people to take

that first step and make an appointment, so she says she likes to start with a conversation. “I always ask patients about their history and background because I want to know if there’s been anything in the past to be aware of. Then we cater the experience to that patient in particular,” she says, adding that her goal is to build trust with patients over time. Shannon explains that through informed consent and talking about options to ensure the patient has full autonomy over treatment empowers the patient to make the right choices for them. Technology also helps. “That’s our goal by investing in technology,” Shannon says. “We want to make it more comfortable for patients.” And thanks to technology, Wellspring offers a number of same day services, so patients won’t have to deal with things like temporary crowns and multiple visits. Technology, like 3D printing, allows for better fitting materials and lasting quality work, so patients have good experiences with predictable outcomes. And they focus on biocompatibility as well. “Dental work in general is permanently implanted in the body and so we want to be mindful of the materials we use.” Shannon says, and by offering these services and seeing the impact, it's very fulfilling and meaningful work. Visit wellspringdentalatl.com for more information.

You thought buying a home would be the biggest hurdle. But then you didn’t find exactly what you were looking for – the kitchen needs updating or knocking down a wall would make it perfect. Or maybe you’ve been in your home for a while and now you need more space. You don’t want to move – it’s home! In either scenario, renovations are in order. Many would start with the internet and a Google Search. But you’ll likely find an avalanche of builders with flashy sites, fabulous photos, and stellar reviews. The truth is, the current market is confusing, and Google can’t give a straight answer because there isn’t one. We have the answer for you. What you need is a consultant and an advocate who works for you. The place to start is with a professional designer, not a builder. You can take control by first planning with a pro who understands your needs, and then shop. You may be looking for information to begin your journey, and a few questions can be the start of a great adventure. Habitations LLC is a resource to answer your questions and to save your sanity. Nuts 'n Berries, an independent health food store, serving the Atlanta area since the 1980s.

“ I t h i n k t h e re ’s s o m e t h i n g t o b e s a i d a b out s avo r i n g t h e fo o d you’re e at i n g ,” M a r i G e ie r

We’re all busy these days rushing around from one thing to another. Even so, there’s one thing we must stop to do every day, and that’s eat! But even eating is often something we do in a rush. When was the last time you sat down to eat and really thought about the food you’re eating? As we start 2024, we all want to begin the new year with healthy habits, and that includes eating. But we’re not talking about the newest fad diet. We’re talking about mindful eating – giving thought to what you’re eating and how you’re eating it. Mari Geier is owner of Nuts ‘n Berries, an independent health food store located near the border of Chamblee and nearby Brookhaven. Mari says she purchased the health food store after a 15-year career in the fitness space. The store was originally founded in 1980 by a couple of Californians who wanted to bring the concept of fresh food to the greater Atlanta area, making Nuts ‘n Berries the first independent health food store in the area. When the founders were ready to retire, Mari, with her background in horticulture and anthropology and an MBA in finance, stepped in to keep the fresh food concept going. Currently, Nuts ‘n Berries is the only all non-GMO grocery store serving the metro-Atlanta area. Given that, Mari is the perfect resource to talk about the concept of mindful eating.

“My mission at Nuts ‘n Berries is to show people you can get healthy and be healthy,” she says, adding that mindful eating and mindful nutrition is a lot of work. Her goal as a business owner of Nuts ‘n Berries is to make eating healthier easier. With good intentions, it can be easy to get started, but unfortunately, the challenge is staying on track.

GETTING STARTED WITH A MINDFUL EATING PRACTICE

Mari says the first thing to think about when you sit down to have a meal is to understand where the food on your plate came from. If you’re eating meat, does it come from a factory farm or locally? Also, think about who is preparing your food. “We need to be careful to make sure of who is preparing our food and what energy they are putting into our food,” Mari says. Is it prepared in haste or are we preparing our own food and enjoying the experience? Mari suggests drinking a glass or two of water before a meal to avoid confusing thirst with hunger. This can also help to keep us from overeating at mealtime. As you’re eating, slow down and take time to chew, taste and enjoy the food you’re eating. “I think there’s something to be said about savoring the food you’re eating, especially if it’s prepared with love,” she says. “That really makes it more special. that’s one of the reasons why, at the holidays, we have such vivid memories in our minds, because we slow down enough to eat and savor the food and the time.” And then be grateful for the food we’re eating. Mari specifies to be grateful, not just for the food itself, but for the access to clean food. She points out that it’s important to work with our bodies to help and not hinder the digestion process. That can be as simple as giving your body time to digest food after a meal before taking on any strenuous tasks or exercising. Not giving your body time for digestion can lead to the discomfort of indigestion, bloating, and other gastric and stomach issues. Among the many positive aspects of mindful eating

is developing your taste buds. “I think a lot of times when people slow down to eat the types of foods they choose are different than the foods they eat when they’re on the go,” she says. “So the more that we can slow down and eat, the more we can refine those taste buds so the food ends up tasting better.” In fact, engaging all your senses while eating can help you achieve a more mindful eating practice. Mari stresses it can be overwhelming to try to take on all aspects of mindful eating at once. “It’s little baby steps that are important,” she says. Any small step in the right direction can make a positive impact. For more information about Nuts ‘n Berries and healthy foods, visit nutsnberries.com.

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES Start your day with a nutritious and vitamin-packed breakfast. Smoothie bowls are a great way to add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day. Try some of these simple recipes, or create your own combinations to give your health a boost.
