LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy Holidays!

December 2023 PUBLISHER

Kevin Parker | kevin.parker@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Tana Poncsak | tana.poncsak@citylifestyle.com

Dear Readers, The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it's the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects the best. Growing up in Chicago, I remember my Mom decorating the entire house pretty much right down to the bathrooms, the whole family going downtown to look at the holiday scenes in the department store windows, the house filling with the smell of baking Christmas cookies, and the excitement of the pile of presents under the tree that continued to grow as we counted down the days until Christmas. Nowadays, I just enjoy seeing homes and businesses gear up for the holidays by putting up their decorations, local communities as they put up their trees and other holiday decorations, and more people than not getting into the spirit of the season. This month we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what Chamblee has to offer when it comes to spreading holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier while supporting a few of our many local businesses. We also wanted to share what Chamblee has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. But it’s also a tough time for some. So as we go about our holiday preparations and celebrations, keep an eye out for those who might be struggling and offer a helping hand or maybe just lend an ear to listen. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy Kwanzaa! And Happy Holidays to EVERYBODY, regardless of how you celebrate the season!

ARE YOU RE ADY FOR THE HOLIDAYS? Tips for decorating your home for the holiday season

When using a ribbon tree topper, use the same ribbon throughout the tree for a unified look.

Layered place settings add elegance to the holiday table.

Decorating can be fun, but it can also be one more thing on an already lengthy “to-do” list. To make the most of decorating your home for the holidays, we spoke with Susie Prince of Susie Mae Design for tips and tricks to make decorating your home easy and fun! CONTINUED >

“No fireplace? A staircase is a great alternative to a mantle for hanging stockings.” Susie Prince, owner of Susie Mae Design

FRONT DOOR Start with a wreath. Make your own wreath using a metal wireframe and cuttings from a Christmas tree lot. Weave cuttings through the frame to make a beautiful natural arrangement. For an artificial wreath, look for one with different kinds of greenery, as it tends to look more realistic. Red berries add a festive touch! Swags of garland can decorate the front door. For this, artificial garland is best. Start at the top center and swag out to the top corners, then let it fall to the ground. Add a big bow to anchor the center and add ribbon for color.

CHRISTMAS TREE When decorating a real or artificial tree, you’ll need four times more lights than you think you'll need to make it feel really full. Wrap lights tightly to the branches using LED lights with green cords. Use a mixture of warm, soft white lights and big bulbed colored lights that Susie refers to as “Charlie Brown" lights to give the tree a soft glow with festive color. Next comes garland and ribbon. If you have a ribbon tree topper, use ribbon throughout the tree. For other toppers, you can use garland. Worried about spacing the garland evenly? Susie suggests garland with loops on the end. Attach at the top of the tree at varying heights and let it hang vertically. With ribbon, go around the tree using undulating swags. Keep it loose using lots of ribbon. Use personal ornaments and lots of them to make the tree nice and full.

STAIRCASE Garland, ribbon, and lights – when you think you have enough, you need more. Susie suggests measuring the length of the staircase and doubling it for the amount of garland you’ll need. Measure the Newell posts as well, because you’ll want to swag the garland so it drapes off at the end of the Newell

18

posts. Use pipe cleaners or zip ties to attach the garland to the handrail and add a bow where the swag is attached for a nice finish. Floral picks of berries can add a festive look. Add lights to the staircase using battery-operated lights. No fireplace? A staircase is a great alternative to a mantle for hanging stockings.

FIREPLACE Start with bottle brush trees of varying sizes and colors on the mantle, the more the better. Add a garland with berries and lights on the mantle. Use nice stocking hangers or hide simple ones by tucking them in the garland. The mantle is good for Christmas villages. Use faux snow, but don’t layer it too thick. Use risers to create dimension and height for your village. A piano top can be decorated like a mantle. Display holiday collections of nutcrackers, snowmen, or holiday cards from Christmases past. Rosemary trees add beauty to the hearth. Bigger is better, as smaller trees can look lost. When using poinsettias on the hearth, keep in mind they are poisonous to house pets.

DINING TABLE A Christmas runner or tablecloth can instantly add holiday cheer. For place settings, include a charger with your fine china and layer for a luxurious look. Finish with cloth napkins and holiday napkin rings. For the centerpiece, add fresh greenery on a tray with some holiday ornaments clustered together or use greenery as a runner and add figurines of deer or other holiday pieces. Keep centerpieces low and add tapered candles for soft lighting. Finally, add something small but special for the holidays in each room – a hand towel in the powder room or throw pillows in the family room! Visit susiemaedesign.com.

The Shaping of Chamblee

Public Arts

Bringing the community together with art

ARTICLE BY TANA PONCSAK PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET HOWARD

This is one of the many murals around Chamblee.

Teneisha Jones has always had a love for art, so it’s no surprise this Chamblee resident joined Chamblee’s first Public Arts Commission about four years ago. Now Teneisha has taken on the role of the city’s first Public Arts Coordinator. We met with Teneisha to talk about her new role and what’s in store for Chamblee in the way of Public Arts.

TELL US ABOUT THE PROJECTS YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED IN SO FAR. Since I took this role, we have continued moving forward with our 2023 budget, which includes the purchase of four sculptures, the high school mural, and the Chalk Walk, which was much bigger this year than prior years.

This mural brightens up the Chamblee MARTA Station.

Welcome to Chamblee!

hadn’t lined up. This year I happened to get in a meeting with the high school art teachers the day before school started and the timing was perfect. Students competed to create the design and the Public Arts Commission chose the winning design.

And as a resident, I feel like my heart is really in the job. I’m so invested in making Chamblee a beautiful place to walk around, and hopefully, to become an arts destination. Come for this event but stay and see the art!

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE SCULPTURES THAT ARE BEING PURCHASED?

WHAT DO YOU THINK PUBLIC ART MEANS FOR A COMMUNITY?

We have four sculptures being purchased this year, but installation may not be completed until next year. Two are coming from the Roswell Arts Program as a city-to-city purchase. Then a very big sculpture is going in the green space between the old city hall and the new city hall. And the fourth is our first non-local sculpture.

I think public art brings community members together. Performing art brings everyone physically together. On the other hand, a mural - you may not physically be together, but you’re experiencing the same piece. It brings people together through conversation and a sense of place. This is where I live, and this is where the art is.

HOW DID THE HIGH SCHOOL MURAL PROJECT COME ABOUT?

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE A BIG PART IN THE CITY’S PUBLIC ARTS AND TO ALSO BE A RESIDENT?

The city has wanted to work with the high school on an art project, and it just

There’s so much going on in Chamblee and that’s amazing to see as a resident.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL PROVIDES HELP AND HOPE TO NEIGHBORS IN NEED ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TANA PONCSAK

In downtown Chamblee is the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. But what residents may not realize is that the thrift store is part of a much larger and older organization. Just around the corner from the thrift store on Chamblee Tucker Road is the office for St. Vincent de Paul Georgia. St. Vincent de Paul Georgia dates back to 1903 founded by a group of parishioners in Atlanta.120 years later, the organization has grown and continues to serve the community and beyond offering much-needed programs for Georgians in need, including those in Chamblee. Brian Dooling, director of Marketing and Communications with St. Vincent de Paul Georgia, says that as an organization, they love being located in Chamblee. "It's a vibrant urban city with a diverse community, and our Support Center is conveniently located near a MARTA Station, so we are accessible to our neighbors that may be in need." The organization’s mission is to provide help and hope to neighbors in need, stabilizing those in crisis and creating paths to self-sufficiency. And according to Brian, they keep focused on that mission. "The impact we have in the community has resonated with our donors to continually support us, whether it be individuals or corporations." The organization offers a number of programs such as a food pantry, medical and wellness services, housing programs and more.

Brian Dooling serves as director of Marketing and Communications for St. Vincent de Paul Georgia.

THE FOOD PANTRY The organization has food pantries across the state and relies on donations from others such as Kroger, Publix, and more to provide food to more than 50,000 individuals per year. The Chamblee facility is also equipped with a Teaching Kitchen where individuals can learn to prepare tasty and nutritious meals using ingredients from the pantry.

HEALTH SERVICES The pharmacy was launched in 2021 and has served more than 3,500 patients providing no-cost and lowcost prescriptions, and other needed medications. Additional health services include over-the-counter medications, medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs and more, and health services referrals.

HOUSING St. Vincent de Paul works to create housing stability for individuals and families during times of need by providing emergency assistance for rent, mortgage, and utilities, transitional housing, temporary housing, and housing referrals and resources.

CLARK’S CHRISTMAS KIDS Clark Howard, the radio and television personality, provides foster kids in Georgia with Christmas gifts during the holidays. Through this initiative, SVdP works with other partners to make the holidays brighter for thousands of kids.

THRIFT STORES The thrift store in downtown Chamblee is one of 9 in the state, and proceeds raised go to fund the programs and services the organization offers. Donations can be dropped off at the thrift store. There's a list of items accepted for donation on the SVdP website.

“...they (volunteers) come to St. Vincent de Paul to make a difference, and they absolutely do!” Brian Dooling, director of Marketing and Communications for SVdP

VOLUNTEERS SVdP relies on its community volunteers. The 2022 Annual Report states that almost 7,000 volunteers working 166,448 hours helped the organization make an impact across the state by serving their communities at St. Vincent de Paul. Brian says it's astounding just how many people from all walks of life come to SVdP to give their time and talent as volunteers. "From college students to business professionals to retirees to people who just want to lend a hand - they come to St. Vincent de Paul to make a difference, and they absolutely do!" Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Holiday Wreath Charcuterie Board • • • • •

Fig Jelly Honey Variety of Cheeses Salami or meat of choice Olives (provide a variety)

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign

2023 32

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
