In this season of giving thanks, we often reflect on our many blessings. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those who have helped us along our journey can leave us missing what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. We recently lost my Dad in September, after months of declining health. And although it was obviously an occasion for grieving, it may seem counterintuitive that it was also a time for giving thanks. Thanks that my Dad lived a long life, including being married to my Mom for over 50 years and the opportunities to have varied and interesting careers and travels and experiences during his 87 years. This year the holidays will have a note of sadness for my family, but more than anything I am grateful and thankful for family that IS still with us, for the fact that my Mom and Dad are together again at last, and I'm thankful our memories of him will keep him alive for many more years in our hearts. I urge all of us to find the things that they’re grateful or thankful for, even when – especially when – it can be hard to see those things. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in and around Chamblee who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city a vibrant community. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of Chamblee directly to you. Evan Oglesby grew up in Toccoa, Ga., and spent his college years in Florence, Ala., attending the University of North Alabama. After college, his talent and ability on the football field led him to the NFL as an undrafted free agent playing for the Buffalo Bills, the Baltimore Ravens, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Miami Dolphins. He spent about five years in the NFL. Now in Chamblee, he helps kids through Protots, his foundation, and more.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH PROTOTS? I was with my daughter at the playground, who was 3 at the time. We were doing footwork drills when about four or five kids joined us. I noticed the parents were watching. Later when I searched for toddler programs in the area, what came up was soccer tots, musical tots, and yoga tots, but there wasn’t anything for physical activity and training that introduced toddlers to different sports. It took time to find a name to build a business behind. One day back at the playground, Protots came to mind, and it was the ‘aha moment’ of the perfect name for having professional athletes lead the charge of helping the next generation of student athletes.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH TEACHING DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS? Protots is about giving kids information early, so when they play their first T-Ball game, they’re ahead of the rest of the kids. It’s the physical activity training program introducing sports to 2 to 6-year-olds and the staple of kids’ athletic preparation and acceleration. We make it fun. We add different things to get their minds focused on the footwork, but they’re actually working on balance and control, and they don’t even realize it. For 2, 3, and 4-year-olds, parents are involved. Kids learn drills and replicate them with parents at home. For high schoolers the approach is slightly different. They're more polished in preparation, exercise, and training. My focus is on minimizing wasted steps. That’s going to make them sharper with their performance. And we work on knowledge of the game and what’s required for positions.

I promised myself that if I ever made it, I would come back and help kids that have a dream and teach them how to get there. The Evan Oglesby Foundation is to inspire and strengthen kids to achieve excellence in education and athletics and create opportunities for success. If it wasn’t for my athletic ability, I wouldn’t have been able to pay for my college education. That can happen to so many kids. As we count our blessings and give thanks this November, we want to recognize a few of the many well-deserving organizations around Chamblee that are here year-round offering support and helping members in the community in tangible ways. This year we’re featuring LifeLine Animal Project, Elaine Clark Center, and the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation. These organizations provide much needed services to many in our community and beyond, and we want to say thank you to them and to all the organizations in our community that give back and make our community a better place to live.

The Urban Art Collective offers studio space to artists in and around Chamblee

Years ago Margaret Taylor had a building constructed in downtown Chamblee. Little did she know at the start of the project that the building would eventually become the site where 38 artists would be inspired and create their artwork on a daily basis. Today, that building and group of artists are known as the Urban Art Collective. Margaret Taylor’s own journey as an artist started out like many others. Art was more or less a hobby, until it became more. In a career as a teaching professional who taught tennis, Margaret says she had a lot of downtime during the cold winter months and when the rain set in. That's when she took up art. She started small in the basement of her home making picture frames and an occasional birdhouse or two. Then she started creating more. She made garden art, had a couple of successful furniture lines, and more. After about 30 years as an artist, Margaret refers to her journey as a successful and an eclectic one. Eventually, when it was time for Margaret to move into a designated space, she decided to build what would end up being a two-story building in Chamblee, which Margaret admits was a little large for her needs at the time. “My father kept saying, ‘the building is too big,’” she says. “And technically he was right.” Once the building was completed, Margaret explained that she was approached by a businessman, who was

also a portrait painter, about renting out some of her extra space. To make it cost-effective for her, the tenant brought along a couple of others looking to lease some space. It was with encouragement from those tenants that she started to realize exactly what the space could be. The tenants stressed to her that with such a beautiful building, and with so much natural light, it could really be something. “I paid attention to what they were saying,” Margaret says. Because businesspeople were also interested in renting space, she had to make a pivotal decision. “I just decided that it needed to be strictly artists,” she says. “We try to keep it quiet so people can concentrate on getting into their groove. And with people on the phone running a business and all, I decided pretty quick to just limit it to artists.” Margaret finished out the studio space in phases and now she has 38 studio spaces with 38 artists and a waiting list. And she’s there daily working alongside them. “They are such wonderful people, and it’s just a great group of artists,” Margaret says, of the Urban Art Collective group. “Everyone is at different stages of their art development, but everybody is passionate about their work and learning and growing. It’s a neat community and to get to show up every day and get to know the people and see how their work evolves, I just couldn’t go to a better place every day.” CONTINUED >

More about Margaret Taylor and her art... Margaret Taylor has created art and home décor using reclaimed materials for about 30 years. Margaret explains that her art is business to business. “It’s different than traditional fine art because the sales streams are more challenging,” she says. Because she uses reclaimed materials for her products, she says her biggest challenge is finding the raw materials she needs since people aren’t taking the time to salvage old homes anymore. Her products are handmade making each item unique. She says one of her biggest rewards in creating her art has been developing the relationships with her clients. “It’s just a nice community to be a part of,” she says. And getting her start was a bit of a family affair. She says that in the beginning her mother would travel with her to trade shows and her father would help her build things, and she cherishes the memories of those early days. But even with all the studio space Margaret has to offer, there are still more artists looking for a studio space to call their own. “It would be nice to not have to turn people away,” she says. “People (Artists) just want to do their thing. They want to get out of their home and be encouraged by a community. There are just not enough places in Atlanta.” How can the community best support its artists? By showing up at events and purchasing local artists’ works. The Urban Art Collective is an active group with three events a year open to the public—

a spring event, a fall event, the Art Walk that's held in September, and the holiday event, which always takes place the first weekend in December. “They’re all wonderful,” Margaret says of the events. "The holiday event is huge. Artists are able to sell their work and people are just happy to be here. a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered. ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL

It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.” But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun. “People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different. “If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.” For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and

I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey. “With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.” Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.” What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.” If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year? “Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious.”

What about dessert? “If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”

How much should I spend on a bottle of wine? “That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around $20, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.” James Lewis is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years, and he and his wife, Nancie own Crush Wine Bar in Castle Rock Colorado.
