Beyond designing in the shop, students get to work backstage assisting during live performances.

Zoe explains, “We have a black box theater with shows that are all student-produced. Professors direct smaller musicals and plays, and the space gives them an opportunity to get experience and make mistakes in a lower-pressure situation. Upstairs, our main stage is for bigger productions.”  Show nights are one of the most exciting parts of the program. Aspiring costume designers work hard to ensure that actors’ needs are met, getting them dressed, occasionally assisting with wigs, special effects, and makeup. And that’s just the prep leading up to Onceshowtime. theshow starts, students are backstage assisting with whatever comes up, plus helping actors into and out of costumes in record time. “A quick change happens in anywhere from thirty seconds to a minute and a half,” Zoe says. By graduation, most students have also had oppor tunities outside of WSU. They may work with touring shows, theater venues downtown, or even collaborate with students in the film department. “They get to try a little bit of everything,” Zoe says. “I’m excited to see what our students go on to do.” One such student, 2018 grad Naomi Reisner, currently works as a hair dresser for Wicked on Broadway.

Carly recently won a College of Liberal Arts (COLA) Outstanding Staff Award for her work in the shop and in the community, notably for the way she cares for the students.

Zoe Still, a professor of Costume Design, shares how students learn in the shop and backstage, and what’s special about Wright State’s program. As you might expect, professors work with students during “shop time,” preparing for a show, planning, design ing, patterning, sewing, and building costumes.

Zoe describes how her colleague helps students develop independence, professionalism, and confi dence, teaching communication and respectful col laboration. “Carly is fantastic with them; she’s like their shop mom. She’s worked very hard to make sure that it’s a nurturing environment for everyone. If there’s an issue, she teaches them how to communicate effectively to work things out and get help when they need it.”   Emmy Goerling, who is set to graduate this year, had praise for both Zoe and Carly. “They’ve taught me so much. I came to the costume shop already knowing how to sew, albeit self-taught. I’ve been able to work on very complex projects to advance my skills.”

“Aspiring costume designers work hard to ensure that actors’ needs are met, getting them dressed, occasionally assisting with wigs, special effects, and makeup. And that’s just the prep leading up to showtime.”

At Wright State University’s Costume Shop, students learn design techniques and how to make wardrobe magic happen. In this corner of campus, students develop mastery of technical and artistic costuming skills. They learn to create and innovate and get their feet wet with priceless hands-on experience in pro ductions on campus and in the community.

But WSU’s shop is extra special, partially thanks to Costume Shop Manager, Carly Kimmins.

With shows like Sister Act coming this fall and On the Town hitting the stage in the spring, it promises to be a great theater season. If you’d like to see a show, visit Liberal-Arts.Wright.edu for links to the box office and other performances. To find out more about enrolling in one of Wright State’s Dance, Theatre and Motion Pictures programs, email Vicky Oleen at Victoria.Oleen@wright.edu.

Much has changed in the workplace over the last 25 years, but the importance of a good first impression

“There is still very much a transportation barrier so the mobile unit will help us reach those throughout the Dayton region and beyond,” explains CTW Director of Operations, Suzy Harris.

Over the years, CTW has been able to constantly adapt to meet the ever-changing needs of the community. Some of these adjustments include expanding beyond women-only to serve the needs of men and indepen dent teens and offering the Workforce Education Initiative (WEI). WEI is a series of workshops designed to equip clients with the knowledge and skills needed to create a professional image that will help them gain and maintain employment.  In 2021, CTW leadership also launched the Accelerate Success Mobile Outreach Initiative with the goal of improving access to their programs beyond the Montgomery County Job Center location.

Clothes that Work (CTW) will soon celebrate 25 years of clothing, educating and empowering individuals to prepare them for employment success. CTW was founded by 13 women in 1998 to provide interview and work-appropriate clothing to job seekers who are reen tering the workforce. Today, they partner with local organizations that refer job seekers, who then work with trained volunteer coaches who help clients select interview attire and offer guidance on how to make a positive first impression.

SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY

BOOSTING CONFIDENCE

Client coaches at Clothes That Work may make recommendations such as, laying out clothing the day before the interview to ensure it’s clean and pressed, and choos ing neutral clothing colors like gray, black, brown, and navy blue. If wearing makeup, they advise using soft and neutral colors and limiting fragrance or aftershave.

Clients who come into CTW are taken into a well-organized boutique-style shop and are given attention and respect. Many clients express how the one-onone advice and support from their cli ent-coach made them feel more confident for their upcoming interview.

PROFESSIONAL remains constant. Suzy shares the story of one client who attended a job fair after being provided an interview outfit and coaching tips for the interview process.

GIVING BACK | LOCAL SERVICES

There are several ways to support Clothes That Work: volunteer, donate new or gen tly used clothing and accessories, host a clothing drive, shop The Boutique, and/or make a donation. All donations should be clean, in good condition, and less than five years old. The Boutique is open to the pub lic and offers donated clothing that isn’t as well-suited for interviewing.

Clothes That Work is currently accept ing clothing donations by appointment only at their facility at the Montgomery County Job & Family Services Building. Clothing donation appointments can be made on their website.  Follow CTW on Facebook and Instagram for posts about most-needed items. “The idea came to me on a summer day in 2020,” shop owner Jackie Smith remembers. “Working mostly from home in my current career gave me the opportunity to sit still and ask myself, ‘if I could do anything, what Cultivating

TREND SETTER | HOME + DESIGN would it be?’ I felt drawn to opening a plant shop. But also living near downtown Mason, I’ve always craved a nearby store that has all of my favorite things.”

She landed on an idea for a shop with items like plants, unique pottery, interesting home decor, books, and candles. Jackie’s vision also included a space with a garage door.  She recalls, “I didn’t have to go far to find the perfect space. I discovered an old beer drive-thru that had been sitting vacant for years.” While the building needed a You know those special places you walk into and just being there makes you feel good? Seeing how the store provides joy has been a sweet and humbling feeling.”

lot of work, she couldn’t pass it up. “It not only had one garage door, it had two!”   Jackie recently celebrated Moss & Ivy’s first anniversary with her staff and two chil dren, who worked nights and weekends to help her open. “I have an amazing team of women who make the store what it is every day and call it their happy place,” she says.

Jackie and her staff can also introduce you to ideal beginner plants, “Many of our customers started out with one plant in one room and now have plants in every room,” she says.

DECORATING WITH PLANTS

There are two great beginner plants that require very little light and do not require weekly watering like most plants.  They are the Zanzibar Gem (ZZ Plant) or what the Moss & Ivy team call, “the Easy ZZ” and the Sansevieria or the Snake Plant. Both are low-maintenance and add great warmth and dimension to any room.

Stop in to experience Moss & Ivy for yourself. Take in the store’s unique atmo sphere while browsing beautiful decor pieces, items for entertaining, gorgeous plants, and maybe even something for yourWhetherpet! you need a gift for a friend, or you simply want to browse for yourself, you’ll find practical and whimsical items that anyone would enjoy unwrapping (even if that someone is you)!

SAFETY FIRST Many plants are toxic to animals. “We can help guide customers to the best petsafe plants if they have dogs or cats that might try to eat a leaf or two,” says Jackie.

BEGINNER PLANTS

Most plants hate to be overwatered! If you feel like you kill every plant that you’ve ever bought, typically it’s because you’ve been overwatering them or the lighting is not appropriate for your plant choices.

Incorporating plants into home decor is a growing trend, and Moss & Ivy is the place to go if you need some pointers. “Plants can go anywhere you have light, whether that’s little or plentiful,” Jackie explains. “We can guide you to the best plant for your space depending on your available light and the level of mainte nance you prefer.”
