LIFESTYLE LETTER

Something to be thankful for... November’s theme is Thankful, and honestly, it’s something so small yet so powerful. Giving thanks when someone lets you into their lane or holds the door. Two simple words, thank you, hold more power than you know. But saying it and then feeling it. Have you noticed the difference? Have you ever tried holding onto that gratitude when negative thoughts start pouring in? It’s not as easy as saying it. I’m trying to catch myself lately. Something goes wrong, and I’m having a terrible day. I breathe out and find something to be grateful for. Sometimes it’s having a car, food in the fridge, and running water—things I use every day without giving them much thought. The more I let gratitude in, the more positive things I notice. It starts small, but it builds. Then comes the ripple effect. Somehow, I start pulling myself out of it. Everyone struggles. We see each other’s highlights, but not always what’s happening behind them. When I say I’ve struggled to find gratitude on a hard day, I mean it. I’ve needed someone special to remind me here and there to look at what I do have when everything feels like it’s going wrong. I’m thankful for those reminders, even when I need them more than once. As a small business owner, the struggle is real. It can be lonely. You put so much into something you believe in, work through uncertainty, and keep putting one foot in front of the other. But talking with local business owners gives me so much to be thankful for. Centennial City Lifestyle was built and rooted in community, with businesses that want connection and believe in this community enough to invest in it. I’m grateful for those people. I hear how hard they’re working, what they’re figuring out, and what a win means to them. Connecting them and sharing their stories is something I never want to take for granted. In this issue, you’ll also meet people who turned pain and grief into nonprofits supporting others. Their stories help showcase Centennial and the people deeply rooted here. I hope you’ll learn about their work or tell them you appreciate it. I’ll keep working on noticing the good on hard days. The community that helped me build this magazine gives me plenty of reasons to keep practicing.

THE STREETS AT SOUTHGLENN’S STREET SMARTS PROGRAM IS BRINGING LOCAL BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS, AND FAMILIES TOGETHER

ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI

Whole Vibe Creative

At The Streets at SouthGlenn, a trip to the grocery store, dinner with the family, or an afternoon spent at a community event can mean more than checking something off the to-do list. Through Street Smarts, everyday shopping and community participation can help support local schools, creating a connection between the businesses people frequent and the classrooms their children attend. “It’s a great way to bring together the business community and obviously our school communities,” says Laura Sweeney, Newton Middle School PTO president and one of the school coordinators for the Street Smarts program. “These are each other’s biggest clients.” The program began in 2009, alongside the grand opening of The Streets at SouthGlenn. Since then, schools have earned $213,850 through the program. During the 2025–26 school year, 14 K–12 schools with more than 10,000 students participated, earning a combined $11,650 in SouthGlenn gift card prizes. The concept is simple: Families, staff, and other supporters submit receipts from participating SouthGlenn shops, restaurants, services, and entertainment venues, earning points for their school. Receipts can be submitted online, and school coordinators can also collect receipts from families and staff and submit them on their behalf. “We’re already grocery shopping and going to those places anyway,” Sweeney says. “So why not allow the schools to benefit from that?” For schools, those points can translate into tangible resources. Gift cards can be used for school needs, classroom purchases, student incentives, raffle or auction items, and other fundraising efforts. “At Newton,” Sweeney says, “the funds primarily support teachers, staff, and students.” “It is an incredible program that provides financial assistance that the schools truly benefit from,” she says. “For us at Newton, it does go back to teachers, staff, and students.” The program also gives schools opportunities to turn a regular night out into a fundraiser. During the 2025–26 school year, schools held 19 fundraising events with seven different SouthGlenn eateries, raising more than $4,000 in additional funds. These restaurant nights create another way for families to gather while supporting their school and local businesses at the same time. Sweeney says the impact goes beyond the dollars. Street Smarts encourages schools to stay connected with the CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C E N T E N N I A L

“It’s such a safe and fun way for families to come together” center through newsletters, social media, email reminders, announcements, and community events. In turn, families become more aware of what is happening at SouthGlenn and more likely to participate. “It’s a really smart way of helping, with the dollars we already spend, going towards causes that impact us,” Sweeney says. That community connection is especially visible during SouthGlenn’s seasonal events. Families can earn additional points for attending events such as Chalk Fest, Spooky Streets, and the upcoming Holiday Parade, with hundreds of attendees uploading photos from events to benefit their schools. For Sweeney, these gatherings are part of what makes SouthGlenn feel like more than a shopping center. “I do think that SouthGlenn has really grown into that small-town feeling—a place where people can come together, spend time, and feel connected,” she says. Growing up in Littleton, Sweeney remembers community traditions that brought neighbors together, and she sees that same spirit reflected at SouthGlenn today. Whether families are gathering for an event, grabbing dinner, shopping for the week, or cheering on their children, the center provides a shared space where those everyday moments can overlap. “It’s such a safe and fun way for families to come together,” Sweeney says. Perhaps one of the most meaningful parts of Street Smarts is the way that connection carries on over time. The events create lasting memories for children and families, from walking in the Holiday Parade to spending an afternoon enjoying everything SouthGlenn has to offer. And as those children grow up, some return to the very same businesses as employees, becoming part of the community that once supported them. Street Smarts really creates a full-circle moment: local businesses give back to the schools that helped shape their future employees, while families continue building memories and relationships close to home.

Turning Connection Into Action A Conversation With Kelli Melissa Reinhardt, Founder & CEO of Make Mental Health Matter

ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI PHOTOGRAPHY BY PINK POPPY MEDIA

WHAT IS MAKE MENTAL HEALTH MATTER, AND WHO DOES IT SERVE? Make Mental Health Matter is a nonprofit focused on building stronger, more connected communities through action, conversation, and education. We equip everyday people with the skills and confidence to recognize when someone may be struggling, start meaningful conversations, and connect them to the right support. We also recently launched low-cost coaching and holistic wellness services for people seeking additional support in their own lives. Ultimately, we want people to know they are not alone and that you don’t have to be a licensed professional to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE ORGANIZATION? I lost my middle sister who died by suicide in 2017. I didn’t know how to help her, and I didn’t know how to help myself. I founded the organization in 2018, and through education and certifications, I learned that there are things everyday people can do to genuinely help save a life. For several years, we focused primarily on awareness, but about three years ago,

22

H OM E TOWN H E R O | HEA LT H + WE LLN E SS

we realized awareness wasn’t enough. We needed to move people toward action— taking classes, having difficult conversations, and actually doing things that support their mental health.

WHY ARE EDUCATION, ACTION, AND CONVERSATION SO IMPORTANT? One misconception I would love to change is the belief that we’re supposed to handle difficult moments on our own. Asking for help isn’t a weakness, and supporting someone doesn’t require having all the answers. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply show up, listen, and remind someone they don’t have to navigate life alone.

HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED? People can take nationally recognized classes such as Mental Health First Aid and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), volunteer at our community events, become monthly donors through our Warrior for Mental Health program, or simply spread the word. We also have resources and programs available at MMHM. org, including our Make Mental Health Matter Show, which features mental health experts and people with lived experience.

Making Sure No Mom Feels Alone A Conversation With Nikki Brooker, Founder & CEO of YANA FOR READERS WHO MAY BE NEW TO YANA, WHAT DOES THE ORGANIZATION DO AND WHO DOES IT SERVE? YANA stands for “You Are Not Alone.” I created the nonprofit in 2017 with the mission of ensuring that every family and every mom feels safe, valued, and accepted. Our Centennial community room provides families with essentials like diapers, wipes, formula, clothing, and shoes at no cost. Our Strong Mamas, Thriving Babies program provides moms who give birth at one of our four participating hospitals with a full year of free, wraparound peer support.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YANA? I had been a teacher for 20 years when two local moms took their own lives and

the lives of their children. The next day, I was at the elementary school supporting the students. A sixth-grade boy walked up to me sobbing and said, "Ethan was my reading buddy. How am I supposed to be okay with the fact that he died?" Then he looked at me and asked, "How do I know the same thing won't happen to me?" Those two questions completely changed my life. YANA began as a place where moms could gather, find resources, and connect with other moms who understood what they were going through.

WHAT DOES SUPPORT LOOK LIKE FOR A MOM WHO JOINS STRONG MAMAS, THRIVING BABIES? We meet moms where they are. They receive an app for connection, weekly in-person gatherings, educational webinars with community

experts, walk-and-talks, check-in calls, texts and emails, and access to support groups. We say the program is for a year, but we never kick anyone out. If you need us, we’re here. We also have online support groups for dads, single moms, families in recovery, families with children with exceptionalities, and more that are open to the public. Everything is free.

HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED? We need volunteers, mama callers, support-group leaders, fundraisers, grant writers, donors, and corporate sponsors. Our annual gala is November 14, and donations and sponsorships help us continue providing these services for free. Most importantly, spread the word. You never know what one small connection can do. Visit YanaMom.com to learn more, get support, volunteer, or donate.

Built on Community,

Rooted in Gratitude Behind every local business is a story of support. This season, they’re saying thank you. PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Mike Ellison Owner | Colorado Tinting

WHO HAS HELPED YOU GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY, AND WHAT WOULD YOU THANK THEM FOR? I wouldn't be where I am today without my family, my team, and the many customers who believe in me along the way. I started learning window tint and paint protection film when I was just 17 and, over the years, so many people have helped me learn, grow, and keep pushing forward. I'm especially thankful to my wife, Jen Zhang, for supporting me and believing in me. She took care of our home and kids for many years while I worked 14 hour days, and now she is here helping me grow our business.

WHAT HAS THE SUPPORT OF THIS COMMUNITY MEANT TO YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS? The support of our community mean so much to me. Colorado Tinting started as a one-person operation in a small RV storage unit without running water. Today, we have a team and a shop with over 4,000 square feet of space. That growth happened because people in my community continued to trust us, recommend us, and support locally owned and operated businesses. Those relationships mean so much more than just business—they're the reason we're able to continue doing what we love.

WHAT MOMENT THIS PAST YEAR MADE YOU ESPECIALLY GRATEFUL TO DO WHAT YOU DO? What makes me especially grateful is knowing that we can make a real difference for people beyond simply making a vehicle or home look better. We believe in educating our customers so they can make informed decisions about protecting themselves, their families, and their investments. Through quality window film, we can help reduce UV exposure. All of our window film is recommended by the Skin Cancer Association. Through paint protection film, we can help protect vehicles from everyday road hazards like rock chips that can lead to expensive repairs. CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . WHAT HAS THE SUPPORT OF THIS COMMUNITY MEANT TO YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS? The support of this community has meant so much to us. We’re grateful for everyone who has walked through our doors, shared our business with a friend, or cheered us on. Getting to know our clients, hearing about their families, and building genuine relationships have been some of the most rewarding parts of this experience. Being trusted to help them pursue their health and wellness goals is an honor.

WHO DESERVES A LITTLE EXTRA RECOGNITION, AND WHY? Our partners, Devon and Erin, deserve recognition for everything they’ve poured into this business. As Lead Nurse, Erin brings care, knowledge and heart to our clients and team. We’re incredibly thankful for their dedication, flexibility and continued support.

WHAT HAS MADE YOU ESPECIALLY GRATEFUL THIS PAST YEAR? The relationships we’ve built with our clients continually remind us why we started. We love hearing about their lives, getting to know their families, and welcoming them back. When they return and share how much better they feel, it makes our work especially meaningful. Those conversations remind us that this business is about people and trust. We’re thankful to play even a small part in their personal health and wellness journeys.

WHO HAS HELPED YOU GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY, AND WHAT WOULD YOU THANK THEM FOR?

Pink Poppy Media

My parents have played a significant role in helping me get where I am today. My dad has been a tremendous influence. His drive, work ethic, and business acumen have helped shape who I am and set me up for success. I have so much to thank him for. My mom has been equally influential. Her compassion, personality, warmth, and attention to detail have had a lasting impact on me. I'm incredibly grateful for both of them and the qualities they've instilled in me.

WHAT HAS THE SUPPORT OF THE CENTENNIAL COMMUNITY MEANT TO YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS? The support of the Centennial community has meant so much to me and my business. It's actually how you and I first connected! Through Centennial City Lifestyle, I've built relationships throughout the community, connected with new clients, and grown my business beyond simply generating leads. It's also helped me become a familiar and trusted resource for homeowners and businesses throughout Centennial. I love being known as the local "blind guy" people can turn to when they need help. For me, it's about more than business. It's about building relationships, being part of the community, and becoming someone people know and trust.

GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up

Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our nonprofit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.

We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.

“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.

Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.

This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.
