Back To School

August in Celina carries a rhythm all its own. It is the season of early alarms, packed lunches, grass stained uniforms, and the familiar comfort of coming back together. Our Kids and Pets issue is a reflection of that rhythm, celebrating the families, classrooms, backyards, and sidelines where so much of community life unfolds.

This month, we are proud to reveal the winner of our Dog Cover Contest. Our cover pup takes the spotlight with a prize package and a special photo shoot, while 18 standout runners up remind us just how much personality, charm, and joy our four legged companions bring to daily life. Meet the winner on the cover of our August issue!

Inside these pages, The Therapist's Backyard Prescription introduces readers to Chase Wade, whose family life beyond the office is grounded by fresh air, quiet routines, 20 chickens, and a few ducks. His story is a thoughtful reminder that balance is often found not in grand gestures, but in simple care and steady presence.

We also feature Roo and Frankie, the therapy dogs serving Celina ISD with a calming presence that reaches students and staff alike. Their work speaks to the unique role animals can play in making schools feel more supportive, connected, and kind.

Our August issue also highlights Cody and Kyla Moles, respected soccer coaches and an award winning teaching couple at Celina High School. Their influence extends well beyond the field, shaping both character and confidence in the students they serve.

And in a season centered on family, Dr. David Jarquin of Independence Chiropractic offers a personal look inside his baby bag after recently welcoming his second child. His practical essentials and fresh perspective give readers a warm and relatable glimpse into new parenthood.

As always, thank you for welcoming us into your homes every month. We'll see you around town and at Bobcat Stadium!

What Every Seller Needs to Know

In the Current Real Estate Market

Listings have surged and price reductions are rampant. It feels as if the market is in a downturn when in reality it’s getting back to normal. In the last several years we have had a shortage of homes for sale which spiked home values and through this process, we began to have expectations that it would last forever. The good news is that there is still a demand for homes in our area with the growth that will continue in North Texas.

So how do we pivot and navigate a balanced market? First and foremost, sellers need to be realistic about their home value. Buyers have choices and will not overpay. They also have many new construction options and will tend to lean toward a home that has not been lived in. Sellers are competing with builders that offer numerous incentives, including both financial and upgrade options. This is very enticing, especially when pre-owned homes are not move-in ready.

What does this mean if you have a pre-owned home? Staging is critical when you are competing with a model home. Align with a lender that offers a temporary rate buy down program. If you can’t repaint or update your home, know that offering a concession for a buyer to do so can help get you sold. We have a program where you can borrow money to make improvements and pay back at closing. This helps our clients win and get across the finish line.

The takeaway is this... make certain that you work with an experienced agent that has the tools, a healthy marketing budget, and customized strategy to attract buyers to your home. At The Lori Vaden West Group, this is our specialty. We are passionate about helping our sellers navigate the ever changing real estate climate and positioning them to succeed.

We take the guesswork out of real estate.

THE THERAPIST’S BACKYARD PRESCRIPTION

CHASE M. WADE, M.ED, LPC-S, SHARES HIS FAMILY-ORIENTED LIFESTYLE

Living a slower lifestyle, being present in the moment, and practicing stillness may be easier than you think. If you've ever considered slowing down, let this inspire you. Chase M. Wade, M.Ed, LPC-S, shares how a slower-paced, family-oriented lifestyle and perhaps even a few chickens can positively impact your life. As the founder, lead counselor, and consultant of Starting Line Counseling & Consulting, Chase has a unique perspective on finding balance and fulfillment.

Chase counsels adults and adolescents through in-person and teletherapy sessions. His local practice provides a safe place for healing and hope. With

specialties in anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and addiction, along with a background in Human Development and Family Studies and a master's degree in Counselor Education from Texas Tech University, he has come to view counseling as something that extends far beyond the four walls of an office.

To Chase, therapy is about healing, growth, and achievement. He encourages those he serves to find hope not only through counseling but also by building a meaningful life outside. He believes there is tremendous value in caring for something beyond yourself and finding balance through everyday experiences.

Inspired by his wife, what began as a small chicken coop has grown into a 300-square-foot labor of love. Alongside his wife and sons, Chase now cares for chickens, roosters, ducks, and cats. He believes that caring for animals strengthens family bonds and teaches valuable life lessons. "Caring for animals teaches young kids empathy and emotional regulation," he says.

For Chase and his family, this shared outdoor experience has created quality time, encouraged a love of nature, and provided a meaningful family project that continues to bring them closer together. His passion for helping others extends beyond his counseling practice to caring for the animals that give so much unconditional love in return.

The coop not only helps Chase maintain balance in his own life but also influences how he supports his clients. Working with people from all walks of life, backgrounds, and experiences, he has found that stepping away from his desk and spending time caring for animals provides perspective. He notes that animals offer stress relief and encourage mindfulness because, as he puts it, "They don't care what kind of day you had; they're just happy to see you."

Pets are often present during life's biggest moments and transitions. While they are only part of our lives, we are their entire world. That perspective serves as a powerful reminder to slow down and appreciate the relationships that matter most.

For you, balance may not come in the form of a 300-square-foot chicken coop or a flock of freerange chickens. It may be found in spending quality time with family, trying new activities, creating lasting memories, and unplugging from daily distractions. Find something your family can build together and enjoy the journey.

If you're interested in connecting with a therapist or scheduling a counseling session, Chase M. Wade, M.Ed, LPC-S, and the newest addition to the team, Felica Pacewicz, M.S., LPC-Associate, NCC, are here to help. Together, they are committed to helping individuals find hope through healing.

Celina PD And Celina ISD Launch A New Bicycle Rodeo To Help Young Riders Build Confidence And Safety Skills

The Celina Police Department and Celina Independent School District are teaming up to host a Bicycle Rodeo across Celina ISD elementary campuses. The event will kick off at Lykins Elementary on Saturday, August 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., followed by O'Dell Elementary on August 29, Bothwell Elementary on September 12, Martin Elementary on September 26, and concluding at Vasquez Elementary on October 10.

Public Communication Officer John Thacker shared that he and other members of the Celina Police Department have seen a noticeable increase in children riding their bikes to school. Visit any campus on a school day, and you'll find bike racks filled with bicycles and scooters throughout the fall and spring. As the number of young riders has grown, so have accidents and safety concerns. After a summer marked by e-bike and e-scooter issues in neighborhoods across the community, the timing is ideal for launching this new program.

and traffic safety are emphasized, including recognizing road signs, understanding when to pass, and knowing when to stop and walk a bike or scooter. Officers will also demonstrate proper helmet fit and usage to help ensure every rider is protected. Because many parents begin allowing their children to ride bikes to school in third or fourth grade, the program is specifically designed for incoming third- and fourth-grade students at each campus. Celina Bicycle Police officers and each school's resource officer will lead the hands-on classes, riding alongside students throughout the rodeo. Participants will navigate obstacle courses, practice new skills, and actively engage in each activity. There may even be a special appearance by Celina's Emotional Support Dog, Darth, who will be on hand to offer a nod and a sniff in support of safe riding habits.

Registration is required and limited to 50 students per campus. Each participant will receive a free T-shirt, prizes, and a special surprise gift.

The program aims to empower children to ride their bikes and scooters safely and confidently. Organizers want every rider to have fun, stay safe, and make smart decisions while exploring Celina on two wheels.

The Bicycle and Scooter Rodeo was developed by Celina PD's school resource officers and other department members. Drawing from the Texas Department of Public Safety's "Be Smart. Be Safe." campaign and in partnership with the Prosper Police Department's popular Bike Safety Class, the program provides practical, hands-on safety education for young riders. Participants will practice essential skills on a cone course, learn how to perform routine bike safety checks, and master safe starting and stopping techniques. The program also covers what to do in the event of an accident. Road awareness

As children learn about road safety and awareness, parents are encouraged to remain vigilant as school returns to session. Drivers should pay close attention in school zones and surrounding neighborhoods. Crosswalk monitors play an important role in helping children safely cross busy streets, and their directions should always be followed. Remember, cell phone use is prohibited in school zones. With a new school year comes new traffic patterns, new students, and new campuses, making it especially important to allow extra time and practice patience during drop-off and pick-up.

Parents can register their students for the Bicycle Rodeo at  shorturl.at/LUoGB . Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Sponsored by Lamar National Bank

It is with great pleasure that we announce the Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month as selected by the Celina Independent School District (CISD) Athletic Coaching Team. This month’s selection is 2026 senior Bowen “Bo” Young.

Bo has been a standout member of the Celina High School varsity tennis program, competing as the Number 1 singles and doubles player during his sophomore and junior seasons, then as Number 2 singles and Number 1 doubles as a senior. After transferring to Celina his sophomore year, Bo quickly established himself as one of the top players in the program’s history. This fall, he helped lead the Bobcats to an Area Championship, and during the spring individual season, he and doubles partner Koushal captured the District Championship, finished as Regional Runner-Up, and earned a State Runner-Up finish. The pair also became the first athletes in Celina High School history to represent the tennis program at the UIL State Tournament.

Throughout his three varsity seasons, Bo accumulated an impressive list of honors. During the 2023-2024 season, he earned

Second Team All-District Singles, First Team All-District Doubles, First Team All-District Spring Singles, and was named the Boys MVP. The following year, he received First Team All-District honors in both singles and doubles, qualified for the regional tournament in singles, and once again earned Boys MVP recognition. This past season, Bo added First Team All-District honors in both fall singles and spring doubles while helping secure district, regional, and state medals alongside his doubles partner. One of the most meaningful influences in Bo’s athletic career has been his mother, who introduced him to tennis and coached him until his skills surpassed hers. Their bond and shared love of the game helped lay the foundation for Bo’s remarkable success.

When he isn’t on the tennis court, Bo enjoys playing golf or teaching himself new skills. One of his proudest accomplishments outside of athletics is learning to play the guitar on his own. This fall, Bo will attend the University of Arkansas, where he plans to major in finance. Congratulations to Bowen “Bo” Young on being named the August Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month sponsored by Lamar National Bank!

FURRY FRIENDS PET SERVICES

Caring For Pets Like Family

For the team at Furry Friends Pet Services, pet care is about much more than feeding animals or taking dogs for walks. It is about treating every pet like family.

Founded from a lifelong love of animals, Furry Friends Pet Services has grown from helping friends and family into an award-winning, family-owned business serving Celina, Prosper, and surrounding communities. Owner and founder, Rachel Horton, a longtime nurse, built the company on a foundation of compassion, reliability, and trust. Today, she operates the business alongside her daughter, Riley, combining their shared passion for animals with professional, dependable care.

Furry Friends offers a variety of in-home pet care services, including drop-in visits, dog walking, overnight pet sitting, and extended visits. Their experience extends beyond dogs and cats to include horses, donkeys, chickens, and other farm animals. The business is insured and bonded, and its owner is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR, giving pet owners added peace of mind.

A deep appreciation for animals has always been at the heart of the business. Over the years, the family has fostered

numerous Great Danes through local rescue organizations and witnessed firsthand the important role pets play in their owners' lives. Riley's involvement in FFA throughout high school further strengthened the family's connection to animal care and agriculture.

The team believes that keeping pets healthy and happy starts with consistency. Daily exercise, interactive play, quality nutrition, regular veterinary care, and plenty of affection all contribute to a pet's well-being.

During the Texas summer months, they encourage owners to be especially mindful of heat exposure and hydration.

At its core, Furry Friends Pet Services is dedicated to helping pet owners feel confident when life takes them away from home. Whether it's a quick visit during the workday or overnight care while traveling, the team strives to provide the same love, attention, and care they would give their own pets.

Because for Furry Friends, every pet deserves to be treated like family.

“Creating opportunities for moms to connect with other moms can be lifealtering,” she says. “We want every mom to feel seen, welcomed, and supported.”

THE MOM WALK CO. CELINA

Walking Together Through Motherhood

Motherhood can be rewarding, but it can also feel isolating. That's why The Mom Walk Co. Celina is helping local moms build friendships, find support, and create meaningful connections.

Part of the global Mom Walk Collective, which launched in California more than three years ago and now serves more than 350 cities worldwide, The Mom Walk Co. exists to help moms feel less alone. Its simple yet powerful belief is that "moms need moms."

Led by Celina resident Erin Baird, the group hosts free mom walks at least twice each month. Moms in every stage of motherhood are welcome, from expectant and postpartum moms to those with school-aged children and even empty nesters. Walks typically begin with a fun icebreaker before participants enjoy an easy 30to 45-minute walk together. Children are welcome to join, and many walks conclude at a nearby playground where little ones can play while moms continue building friendships.

In addition to walks, the group hosts monthly moms-only events at local restaurants and businesses. Recent gatherings have included

fitness classes, playdates, mom's nights out, and even a floral arrangement workshop in downtown Celina.

For Baird, community is about more than friendship. It is also about supporting maternal mental health.

"Creating opportunities for moms to connect with other moms can be life-altering," she says. "We want every mom to feel seen, welcomed, and supported."

The group regularly gathers at popular community spots such as Old Celina Park and partners with local businesses that help sponsor events through complimentary services, products, classes, coffee, and meals. This year alone, more than 20 local businesses have supported the group's mission.

As a stay-at-home mom of two young children, Baird says watching new friendships form has been one of the greatest blessings of leading the group.

To learn more about upcoming walks and events, follow The Mom Walk Co. Celina on social media or visit their website. Moms looking for community may discover exactly what they're searching for: other moms who understand the journey.

When we received entries for our Kids & Pets photo contest featuring two very special members of Celina ISD, we knew they deserved a spotlight of their own. While Frankie and Roo may not teach math or reading, these four-legged staff members provide something just as important: comfort, encouragement, and unconditional love.

Comfort dogs have become an invaluable part of many schools, helping students navigate everything from firstday jitters to difficult moments. Their calm presence can ease anxiety, encourage positive social interactions, and simply brighten an ordinary school day. At Celina ISD, Frankie and Roo do all of that and more.

At O'Dell Elementary, Frankie, a one-year-old Goldendoodle, has quickly become a favorite among students and staff. Always ready with a wagging tail and a friendly greeting, Frankie has a knack for making people smile. Whether she's participating in school spirit dress-up days or offering quiet companionship to a student who needs a little extra encouragement, Frankie reminds everyone that kindness can come with four paws and floppy ears.

A Paw-sitive

MEET THE FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS WHOSE DAILY MISSION IS HELPING STUDENTS FEEL SAFE, SUPPORTED, AND SEEN

Roo
Frankie

Across town at Martin Elementary, Roo has earned a reputation as one of the school's happiest faces. Imagine fifty excited kindergarteners running toward you, shouting your name at the top of their lungs. Most of us might turn and run, but not Roo. Her tail would be wagging the entire time. Every day, she welcomes students with enthusiasm, helping create an environment where children feel loved, safe, and connected. Her gentle presence reassures students that no matter what kind of day they're having, they're never alone.

While Frankie and Roo may have different personalities, they share the same important mission: making school a place where students feel supported and cared for. Sometimes that means sitting quietly beside a child who's having a hard day. Other times it means celebrating school spirit, greeting students in the hallway, or happily accepting a few extra belly rubs.

It's no wonder that when Frankie and Roo showed up in our dog contest, we knew they deserved more than just a photo. They deserved to be celebrated for the joy, comfort, and countless smiles they bring to Celina ISD every single day

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.

Coaching, Parenting, And Building A Legacy Together At Celina High School

“Most importantly, they look forward to continuing to build relationships with returning players while welcoming the next generation of Celina athletes into the program.”

For Cody and Kyla Moles, coaching is more than a profession. It's a shared passion that has shaped their careers, strengthened their family, and impacted countless student-athletes along the way.

The couple leads Celina High School's five-time state champion girls soccer program, where Cody will begin his 13th year of coaching and Kyla her 12th. This marks their seventh year in Celina. In addition to coaching soccer, Cody serves as the football team's video coordinator, while Kyla previously coached cross country and girls track before focusing exclusively on soccer. In the classroom, Kyla's dedication to students has also been recognized. She was recently named Celina High School Teacher of the Year and Celina ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year, honors that reflect the impact she makes both on and off the field.

As former college athletes who competed in the same conference, the Moles understand the dedication and commitment required to succeed in sports. That shared experience allows them to support one another through the demands of coaching while bringing unique perspectives to the game.

One of the greatest benefits of working in the same profession is the understanding they have for each other's schedules and responsibilities. Their children have grown up around athletics, spending countless hours on fields and sidelines surrounded

by positive role models. Coaching has also allowed the couple to build meaningful relationships with former players, many of whom remain part of their lives today.

Like many coaching families, balancing work and home life can be challenging. From coordinating morning drop-offs to managing bedtime routines on game nights, the Moles rely on teamwork and support from family, especially Kyla's parents, Cheryl and Dusty Hutson. Even when work follows them home, they find enjoyment in reviewing scouting reports together and comparing notes.

Through it all, they remain focused on what matters most. "We are parents first," they emphasize. While coaching is an important part of their lives, they strive to put family first and cherish the time they have with their children.

Their advice to other couples in demanding careers is simple: stay organized and keep your family the priority. Work will always be there, but childhood passes quickly.

Looking ahead, the Moles are excited about the new challenge of competing in Class 5A and facing a new district. Most importantly, they look forward to continuing to build relationships with returning players while welcoming the next generation of Celina athletes into the program.

The Return TO ROUTINE

The start of a new school year brings excitement, fresh opportunities, and a return to routine. While shopping for school supplies and new clothes is important, preparing children mentally, physically, and emotionally can make the transition back to school much smoother.

One of the best ways to set kids up for success is by gradually reestablishing routines before the first day of school. Summer often brings later bedtimes and relaxed schedules, but returning to a consistent sleep routine a week or two before classes begin can help

children feel more rested and focused. Experts recommend school-aged children get between nine and twelve hours of sleep each night.

Parents can also help ease anxiety by talking positively about the upcoming school year. Discussing new teachers, classes, friends, and activities can help build excitement and confidence. For younger children or those attending a new school, visiting the campus beforehand can reduce first-day jitters and help them feel more comfortable in their new environment.

Organization is another key ingredient for a successful school year. Creating a designated space at home for backpacks, homework, and important papers can help streamline busy mornings and afternoons. A family calendar is also useful for keeping track of school events, sports practices, and extracurricular activities.

Healthy habits should remain a priority as school begins. Stocking the kitchen with nutritious snacks, planning balanced lunches, and encouraging physical activity can help children maintain their energy throughout the day. Don’t forget to schedule annual wellness checkups, eye exams, and any required vaccinations before school starts.

Finally, take time to talk with your children about goals for the upcoming year. Whether it’s improving grades, making new friends, trying a new activity, or simply staying organized, setting realistic goals can help children feel motivated and empowered.

Back-to-school season can feel hectic, but a little preparation goes a long way. By focusing on routines, organization, healthy habits, and open communication, families can help children start the year with confidence and excitement. Before long, those first-day nerves will be replaced with new friendships, valuable lessons, and memories that last all year long.

Homemade Dog Food

My two pugs are more than pets—they’re part of the family. That’s why I started making their food at home, and it’s been one of the most popular posts on my blog. You may be surprised just how easy this recipe is. I add all the ingredients to my slow-cooker to cook, and my dogs love it. If you decide to try this recipe for your pet, please consult your veterinarian. Every dog has different needs based on age, weight, and any health issues. You can even share this recipe with your vet to see if any changes are needed. The ingredients are flexible and can be easily swapped to substitute the turkey for chicken or beef, and even try different dog-safe vegetables. Making dog food at home isn’t hard—it just takes a little planning, and my dogs love it.

Slow Cooker

Homemade Dog Food

INGREDIENTS:

• 3 lbs ground turkey (85% lean)

• 1¼ cups frozen sweet potatoes

• 1½ cups frozen peas and carrots

• 1 cup frozen spinach

• 1½ cups uncooked brown or white rice

• 4 cups water

DIRECTIONS:

1. Add all ingredients to a slow cooker.

2. Break up the ground turkey and mix all the ingredients.

3. Cover and cook on High for 3–4 hours or Low for 6 hours, stirring occasionally.

Note: My dog food was ready in 3½ hours on High. Let cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze for later use.

Elevate YOUR PB & J

ARTICLE BY KRISTY BELLEY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

TRANSFORM YOUR HUMBLE PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH FROM LUNCH BOX BASIC TO GOURMET GREATNESS

Ready to give this childhood classic the upgrade it deserves?

Whether you’re packing your kid’s lunch or treating yourself to something special, these elevated PB&J creations will make anyone excited for lunchtime.

THE ART OF THE UPSCALE

The secret to an elevated PB&J isn’t complicated—it’s all about premium ingredients and creative combinations. Swap that white bread for artisanal sourdough, brioche, or even croissants. Trade processed jelly for fresh fruit compotes, gourmet preserves, or actual fresh berries that burst with flavor.

Quality nut butters make all the difference. Think creamy almond butter, rich cashew spread, or that perfectly salted natural peanut butter from the farmer’s market. These simple swaps instantly elevate your sandwich from ordinary to extraordinary.

Bread Options

• Artisanal sourdough

• Brioche

• Croissants

• Multigrain bread

• Cinnamon raisin bread

• Hawaiian sweet bread

• Whole wheat bread

• Thick-cut bread (for open-face)

Nut & Seed Butters

• Natural peanut butter

• Almond butter

• Dark chocolate almond butter

• Cashew butter

• Coconut butter

• Nutella

Fresh Fruits

• Strawberries

• Fresh blueberries

• Fresh raspberries

• Fresh peaches

• Kiwi

• Mixed berries

• Bananas

• Pears

Preserves & Sweet Spreads

• Honey

• Fig jam

• Mango preserves

• Raspberry preserves

• Grape jelly

• Marshmallow cream

Toppings & Add-ins

• Fresh mint leaves

• Granola

• Toasted coconut flakes

• Cream cheese

• Everything bagel seasoning

• Dark Chocolate Syrup

COMBOS TO Try:

CREATIVE COMBINATIONS THAT HIT DIFFERENT

The Sophisticated Sweet: Nutella, sliced strawberries, and a drizzle of honey on brioche bread

The Panini Perfection: Peanut butter, fresh blueberries, and marshmallow cream pressed between sourdough slices

The Beautiful Mess: Your favorite nut butter topped with sliced fresh peaches, kiwi, or berries, then drizzled with golden honey or sprinkled with toasted coconut on thickcut bread

The Grown-Up Classic: Almond butter, fig jam, and thinly sliced pears on multigrain bread

The Breakfast Crossover: Cashew butter, sliced bananas, and a sprinkle of granola on cinnamon raisin bread

The Tropical Twist: Coconut butter, mango preserves, and toasted coconut flakes on Hawaiian sweet bread

The Chocolate Dream: Dark chocolate almond butter, raspberry preserves, and fresh mint leaves on whole wheat

The Savory Surprise: Natural peanut butter, grape jelly, and a thin layer of cream cheese with everything bagel seasoning

PRO TIPS FOR LUNCHBOX SUCCESS

Toast your bread lightly for extra texture, even if you’re making it ahead. Create a barrier with your spread to prevent soggy sandwiches—apply nut butter to both sides, then add your sweet elements in the middle. Pack fresh elements separately and assemble just before eating when possible. Cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters, wrap in parchment paper tied with twine, or pack in a bento box with complementary sides like apple slices, fancy crackers, or dark chocolate squares.

THE BOTTOM LINE

An elevated PB&J proves that sometimes the best meals come from taking something familiar and making it special. These upgraded versions will have everyone asking for the recipe—and maybe even offering to trade lunches.

DIY At Home Theater

Our family had so much fun creating this At-Home Movie Theater party for our son Ezra’s 8th birthday. All you need is a projector and an outdoor space, but I wanted to jazz it up just a little bit more.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

TICKET BOOTH

I created a ticket booth and concession stand for a full movie theater experience to ensure that our movie night felt like our guests were actually going to a movie theater and not just our house. In an attempt to achieve that, we set up a ticket booth at the front door using our kids’ old puppet theater.

Materials:

• Tickets

• Ticket Booth (optional)

Before entering our theater (aka our backyard), I set up a shadow box for guests to place their entry ticket.

PEGBOARD DISPLAY WALL

I love displaying food in a creative way at our parties. I made this simple DIY Popcorn Display Wall as a statement piece in our concession stand. We have also used it in many other ways for other parties such as a donut wall, bagel wall, pretzel wall and more. You can easily recreate your own for your next party.

Materials:

• Pegboard. I chose the 4ft square size at Lowe’s for $10 and spray-painted it white.

• Frame (optional). I bought two 1x4’s for $5 each, cut two pieces 4ft long and two pieces 3.5ft long, stained Minwax walnut, attached to pegboard with screws through the back.

• Twine to string popcorn bags. Or, if you’re using the pegboard display for donuts, bagels or pretzels then use golf tees hot-glued into holes from behind!

• Clothespins to hang popcorn bags.

• Popcorn bags

CONCESSION STAND

My daughter handed out tickets for guests to use to “purchase” their popcorn, candy and drinks at the concession stand.

Materials:

• Popcorn Machine (optional)

• Popcorn

• Popcorn flavors for guests to get creative!

• Candy - Use boxes rather than bags for movie theater vibes!

• Soda - Use bottles rather than cans

• Napkins

• Cupcake toppers & plates  (if it’s a birthday celebration)

• Reused boxes and spray-painted them white for guests to easily carry their snacks

SET THE SCENE!

FINISHING TOUCHES

I cut out red stars (from foam sheets) and stuck them to the floor (with adhesive putty) to lead guests through the house to the concession stand and back outside to where our movie was going to take place. Finally, our guests could choose their seating on chairs or blankets around our yard. I also set up a little bug-spray table for people to grab as needed. Dramatic play, even as an adult, is so much fun! Who says staying home can’t be just as entertaining?

I hope you have as much fun at your party as we did! I’d love if you tagged me @silvertoothfarmhome so I can see your At-Home Movie Theater too!! In reflecting on the party, my son said that “the best part of the night was eating candy with my friends.” After all, people are what matter most!
