FEEDING THE BOBCATS: THE ORIGIN OF BOBCAT MOMS
This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the joy that kids & pets bring to their families and how they always help to make smiles!
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we are happy to highlight the best for Celina's kids in this issue.
Secondarily, who could forget pets? The special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
In this issue, we meet some Partners & Pups, learn all about Backyard Chickens, get a glimpse of Buff City Soap owner's dog Lewis , and learn how to make Dog Gone Good Treats.
And for the kids, our Found Downtown this month features two great businesses, True Light Chiropractic and Achieving Milestones, that offer special services for our children.
Contributing writer, Niki Carbajal, shares with us all about our local Lovepacs and how this organization is helping children in need by providing meals to students who would otherwise go hungry during school holidays.
Finally, we head over to Celina High School and learn how Bobcat Moms came into being as well as get the opportunity to meet everyone's favorite teacher and director of choral studies, Mr. LeMaire!
We wish everyone a happy "Back to School" and hope this is the best school year yet. Go Make Smiles!
As always, thank you for reading and we'll see you around town!

BARBARA IRELAND, PUBLISHER @CELINA.LIFESTYLEIt is with great pleasure to announce the Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month as selected by the Celina Independent School District (CISD) Athletic Coaching Team. This month’s selection is Reagan Radtke. Reagan, a senior athlete at Celina High School, is a letterman in both volleyball and softball. Reagan has been a defensive specialist on the varsity volleyball team since her sophomore year and has earned many awards for her efforts. She has been named to the First Team All District team twice, the Academic All-District team twice, and the All State team in 2022. She has played volleyball since second grade and moved up to club in fourth grade. Her high school coach, Ginger Murray, says of Reagan, “She is the type of athlete that every coach would love to have on their team!” Reagan started playing softball in fourth grade and has played catcher on the CHS varsity team since her freshman year. She
counts the tournament in San Marcos, where the team stayed in a house on the river, as one of her most special moments on the team. Reagan has been named to Second Team AllDistrict twice and the Academic All-District team three times. Coach Bartlett says, “Reagan is a natural athlete; she is literally amazing at everything she does.”
In addition to volleyball and softball, Reagan is involved in other activities as well. She is on the Varsity Cheer Team, trying out for the first time as a Sophomore! She is also in the Chamber Choir and is a Special Olympics Volunteer. She loves to spend time with her friends and works at Papa Gallos when time allows. After she graduates from CHS, she plans to attend college to study nursing. We can’t wait to see all that Reagan accomplishes!
Congratulations to Reagan Radtke and her selection as the August Outstanding Athlete of the Month!

According to the United States Chamber of Commerce, America has over 33.2 million small businesses, which account for 99% of all businesses in America. Towns like Celina and Prosper need this industry for jobs and revenue. For example, both communities are home to the popular Buff City Soap.
Buff City Soap is owned by Ryan and Natalie Imhoff with three franchises located in Celina, Prosper, and Murphy. In late 2019, Ryan and Natalie decided to open a small business while maintaining their full-time careers. They wanted to build a future for their family while teaching them a strong work ethic and business skills, plus have a connection to their hometown.
They picked Celina as their first site in part because of its location on the downtown square. The Imhoffs decorated the shop with “a small town, boutique style to it,” according to Natalie. Buff City Soap opened in late 2020 and, like many businesses during this time, worried about the store’s success. Natalie notes that it was the support of the community that helped it thrive. “This is what I love about Celina and Prosper. The people make the community go around. It’s a tight-knit group, supporting one another,” she said. In fact, she reports, “The Celina grand opening exceeded my goals. We had a line around the building for people to get in! It felt really special and says a lot about Celina.”
Natalie explains Celina has a special place in their heart as it is also their home. “We pour back into Celina, not just because we own a business, but we also shop here, dine here, and live here.” This is evident in the number of programs Buff City Soap supports like the Share the Love campaign where customers donate bars of soap to local firefighters. They also give store products to a local teacher at the end of each month.
While the Imhoffs live in Celina, their children are zoned for schools in Prosper. It’s that Prosper connection that inspired them to open the second store there. Having a relationship with both cities is, in part, what Natalie believes makes Buff City Soap special. They host many events like soap-making classes, team-building classes, and summer camps.
While customers enjoy the events, they like the products at Buff City Soap even more. The soaps and skincare are plant-based with no harsh chemicals, parabens, or dyes. They are hand-crafted daily and made in front of customers. The store’s best seller is the laundry soap made with only three ingredients. Natalie hints to watch for the upcoming "home line " coming soon.
Buff City Soap also has a very popular skincare line including shower oil, body butters and scrubs. The scrubs are formulated from sugar to exfoliate the skin and the body butter cream hydrates for 24 hours. There is something for everyone at Buff City Soap, a one-stop shop for gifts including free giftwrap with purchase.
The Imhoffs have lived in Texas since 2014 and Celina since 2019. Their two sons attend Prosper schools and the family are members of Prestonwood Baptist Church. The family is often seen around Light Farms with their infamous dogs, like the new golden retriever, Lewis, they recently rescued.
Living in a thriving, growing community while owning a small business has been more than Natalie and Ryan ever imagined. “We realized we really loved it,” Natalie gushes. What was originally planned as one store in Celina is now three stores in three cities with more in the works. No doubt the Imhoff's small business achievements will continue to benefit us all.

The Man, The Myth, And Celina’s Own Legend
ARTICLE BY SHARLA DAVENPORT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISSA HATCHERAdam LeMaire, the man, the myth, the legend. It sounds hyperbolic to use these words, but none are more true for this Celina teacher.
Adam LeMaire, the man, is the Celina ISD Director of Choir Studies overseeing choir activities for middle and high school. In the thirteen years he has worked at Celina High School (CHS) as the choir teacher, he has increased the choir enrollment from thirty kids to over 400. No other elective is as popular.
LeMaire is one of CHS’ most beloved teachers. He “plays a huge part of who I am today. Not only is he the best choir teacher, but an outstanding life coach. He believed in me and played a huge role in the singer I am today,” says Keaton Adams, CHS graduate and rising music artist.
The number of students that could sing (pun intended) LeMaire’s praises is infinite, including those not in choir. He lingers in the hallway during passing periods where students say hello or seek his advice, something he finds very rewarding. LeMaire believes it’s his God-given purpose. “Little things can make a big difference. So many times, I have walked away from student conversations knowing The Lord gave me the right words to say, to comfort,” he continues.
LeMaire will tell you he is not about awards. He wants students to make a perfect version of themselves now, so “you can be the best you can be for your future, now.” That’s what makes him legendary, not for achievements but for the love he gives students. Whether talking to a U.S. Senator about a student, announcing All-State Choir student selections, or even helping a student in the darkest of times, LeMaire considers it his calling to support students. Ask any Celina student about LeMaire, and they will repeat the same message –he’s always there for them. CHS Senior Alli Jones confirms. “When all you see is brokenness, Mr. LeMaire sees pieces of a beautiful mosaic. He ensures you never walk alone,” she states. His reputation is not just of choir accolades, but his support for Celina kids.
While Mr. LeMaire is known for CHS choir, so much about LeMaire is a mystery, or myth. He is fiercely private about his personal life resulting in many urban legends like being a C.I.A. agent or previous time in witness protection. LeMaire instead focuses on stories of his childhood in Louisiana and Texas.
A self-described Cajun, LeMaire’s father worked in law enforcement -- including the F.B.I. -- and his mom worked for the health department. His childhood revolved around nature, fishing, and hunting. He experienced “blue collar life” and affluent times. “I know what it’s like not to eat but also have a rich life. I have seen things no one should see, and also be blessed,” LeMaire recalls. These experiences help him relate to all students.
LeMaire attended high school in Texas but was at first unsure about college. His gift of singing led him to Stephen F. Austin (SFA) University, renowned for their classical opera program. During college, the choir toured Europe singing his favorite music, ancient church music. He passed up an opportunity to perform at the Beijing Olympics just so he could perform at a Vatican mass for Pope Benedict.
LeMaire is married with two young children. His wife, not a singer, enjoys their family life with nature and gardens outside of Celina. The family hopes to always enjoy life outdoors with nature.
This year, he hopes to grow the chamber choir, and help all kids reach their potential. He is excited to introduce PALS, Peer Assistance Leadership Service, a service organization he’s wanted to start for quite some time.
Adam LeMaire credits God for guiding him to do more than sing but also help kids. “I never thought I would be a choir teacher. God gave me a voice to do more than sing, but rather to support kids,” he notes. “Anytime I can tell someone’s life has changed leaves an impact on me and I am honored to be a part of it,” LeMaire says. On the contrary, his impact on Celina students will last lifetimes. We are the ones blessed to know the man, the myth, the legend, Adam LeMaire. CONTINUED >

As you prepare to see your adolescent off to college, you flashback to all your child's milestones, special moments, and fun times you've shared together. It feels like only yesterday, your toddler said his or her first word. Soon after, you dropped your child off for the first day of kindergarten, prepared your preteen for puberty, and took your teen shopping for the high school prom.
But now, in an instant, your adolescent is headed out into the world, more or less on
their own. This is a turning point at which you no longer have much oversight or say in your child's life. It can be both scary and exhilarating for parents and kids alike. Of course, you'll worry about your teen's safety and well-being. But you'll also revel in your young adult's enthusiasm, excitement, and dreams for the future.
Parents' feelings about their own life without their child's daily presence and parenting responsibilities are often met with a mix of
ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKERemotions as well. Many parents look forward to this point in their lives and the freedom they haven't enjoyed in nearly two decades. Some parents may even feel conflicted or guilty for looking forward to 'me' time.
At the same time, many parents (even those same parents) feel a sense of loss. After all, they've devoted 18 years to caregiving and raising their child. Many parents lose their sense of self while raising a family. In fact, being a parent can become one's identity. As a result, parents may feel an even more significant loss when their kid heads away to college.
So how do you survive this transition? Learn to embrace it.
A heart-toheart. Write a letter or talk to your adolescent when you see him or her off to college. A letter is best because your kid can save it and reread it to absorb and ponder what you have to say. You've already taught your child the importance of manners and doing their schoolwork. So skip that stuff. Instead, offer wisdom about life and your appreciation for your adolescent's admirable characteristics. Also, avoid dumping on your teen. It's okay to say you're going to miss your kid. But don't overdo it and leave your child feeling guilty or responsible for your pain or loss.
Connection and space. Decide how to maintain communication with your college student. Phone calls, texting, email, video chat, and getting together in person offer
ample opportunities to preserve your relationship. But don't overdo it. Your young adult needs time and space to experience their newfound independence and blossom.
Explore. You now have a lot more free time. Don't let that downtime become an avenue to needlessly worry or mope. Instead, be proactive and set out on a mission of self-discovery. Have you thought about going back to school, work, or changing your career? Now's a good time to explore your options. How about a new hobby, volunteer work, or focusing on your fitness and health? You can also broaden your horizons. Try out different music genres, visit art and history museums, go to plays and sporting events, or explore cultural restaurants or cooking.
Travel. Plan something exciting. Consider a trip to someplace you've always dreamed of going. Or perhaps plan a long road trip or multiple weekend road trips throughout the year. Whatever you choose will help busy your time with the planning, give you something to look forward to, and remind you of the upside of an empty nest or one less child to raise.
It gets easier. Remember, whatever grief, loneliness, worries, or self-doubts you experience, they're a natural part of this transition. With each week and month that passes, it'll get easier. One day, you'll wake up and discover you've fully embraced your new life – and feel real joy for your child's newfound independence.
“Don’t let that downtime become an avenue to needlessly worry or mope. Instead, be proactive and set out on a mission of self-discovery.”
I love Celina! Just ask my family, friends and clients and they will tell you how much I love Celina. I fell in love in 2003 and got here as fast as I could, as the saying goes. I love that I get to sell Celina not just as a real estate broker but as a proud citizen, neighbor, and friend. It is an exciting time to be in Celina! There are so many amazing neighborhoods and more on the way. I’m so grateful that I get to help my clients stake their claim in Celina and call it home!
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Nature and books belong to the eyes that see them.” Now Celina families can combine both nature and books on the Story Book Walk at Old Celina Park. Located on a trail west of the fields, follow the trail to the right to begin with the cover of the featured book of the month and wind your way around to enjoy each page. Delight in a family-focused activity that promotes childhood literacy, healthy habits, and the love of nature! Linda Shaw, the Director of Library Services at Celina Public Library, answers our questions about the Story Book Walk at Old Celina Park.
I know that many public libraries are putting in story book walks in their communities and thought Old Celina Park would be a good location for a Story Book Walk. On a visit to the park, I saw a paved sidewalk that meandered around a grassed area with trees and park benches located at intervals along the half-mile route of the sidewalk. Drawn by the natural beauty and peacefulness of the setting, I approached Assistant City Manager Kim Brawner and Parks and Recreation Director Cody Webb about creating a Story Book Walk along the paved path.
The Parks and Recreation Department partnered with the Celina High School AG Science department, led by teacher Jacob Brown, to design and build 20 powdered-coated steel stands. A Plexiglass sheet is bolted to the top of the stands, creating a weatherproof top with book pages inserted beneath it. The height of the stands is geared to the height of young children so they can easily see the pages. Parks staff who worked on this project are:
• Cody Webb, Parks Director
• Gary Don Hendricks
• Steve Metdker
• Zach Hebert
• Lake Fowler
The Story Book Walk is open year-round. Each month the library prepares laminated pages from a picture book appropriate to the season of the month. The pages are picked up by Parks and Recreation staff at the beginning of every month, who take them to the park and mount them under the Plexiglass sheets. about the Story Book Walk and its opening day on March 7, 2022. The first book displayed was “The Busy Tree” by Jennifer Ward. The Story Book Walk is a wonderful example of a creative partnership between Celina Public Library, Celina Parks and Recreation, Celina Marketing Department, and Celina High School students and instructors.
IN TODAY’S ELECTRONIC/GADGETCENTERED ENVIRONMENT, THE WALK IS A GREAT WAY TO COMBINE READING AND NATURE. CAN YOU SPEAK TO THAT?
The Celina Public Library Story Book Walk provides an outdoor adventure that encourages family connection, early childhood development, and health and wellness. Stories are hand-picked by library staff with a child’s enjoyment in mind. The book pages are posted on the stands along the path, allowing families and friends to enjoy a story as they walk and take in the fresh air and scenery.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE FROM THE COMMUNITY?
Response to the Story Book Walk continues to be positive. It provides a fun way to unplug and refresh!

TRUE LIGHT CHIROPRACTIC
WHERE: 501 W. Walnut St, Suite 200, Celina True Light Chiropractic i s another downtown business bringing unique services to our community. Dr. Colton Wood and his wife Dr. Kelsey Wood have lived in North Texas their entire lives and attended Parker University. After welcoming their first child earlier this year, they are raising their family
in Celina. The Woods founded True Light in 2019, on the belief that our daily habits should always support the well-being and health of our community and our environment. Their approach to chiropractic care is neuro-system based, focusing on the function of the body as a whole. They have had a passion for prenatal care of moms and pediatric care starting as soon as new mom
and baby are ready. The strategy is to relieve birth trauma early in a child’s life setting the stage for lifelong holistic health. They also have a passion for working with the pediatric population, birth through 18 years of age. Dr. Colton Wood shared his own story of how he became interested in chiropractic care through therapy for his own high school sports injury. That experience opened his eyes to the ability of neuro-system care to address physical symptoms as well as his own teenage battles with anxiety and depression.
It is common to see the Wood family attend Friday Night Markets, sponsor little league and pee-wee sports, participate in local running events, as well as support city-wide events throughout the year. Celina is home for this couple and their growing practice. They are eager to continue that relationship.
In August, True Light Chiropractic will be running their best sale of the year. They are charging $75 for your combined Day 1/Day 2 visits. To get started, connect with their office at (214) 901-8415 where a team member will answer questions and walk you through the process.

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
- Marcus GarveyIn 1970 a new football coach was hired in Celina. His name was Gerald Browder. His contract went into effect on a very hot August day, and he let any boy interested in playing for him know they had better be on the field that afternoon at four o’clock sharp. About twenty boys showed up ranging from fourteen to eighteen years of age. The boys were curious and eager to meet their new head coach, and they were also convinced that there was no way he could possibly be as hard on them as the former. After an afternoon of 100-yard “belly crawls” and “wind sprints,” the boys quickly learned they were mistaken As nine o’clock approached, the boys found themselves praying for the darkness that might come and save them. When they thought the worst was behind them, Coach Browder walked over behind the press-box and turned on the lights “Line-up, gentlemen. We’re not done here.” Coach wanted to see what he had…and who would come back.
The boys were tired, disgruntled and questioning their future in the Celina football program. They were hungry and dehydrated, too, as water breaks at this time were a rare treat. The Seniors huddled-up after the first practice trying to determine their next step. They all ended-up at Alma Jo Scott’s house right down from the old Admin building. It was a central location for all the boys in town, and they knew the door was never locked. Alma Jo had three boys to feed, and it was known there was always food around for the taking. Oftentimes, players would come in unannounced and help themselves to a slice of chocolate cake. There were also no sisters, which was important because while the boys didn’t mind fraternizing with the opposite sex after a game on Friday nights, this night was different. It was a meeting of sorts. Some boys were at the table, some lying on the floor. It was
about eleven o’clock at night. The question at handare we going back tomorrow? “If you quit, I’ll quit.” “If I quit my Daddy will whip me.” In the midst of the conversation, Alma Jo plopped down some Doritos and hot sauce and began making sweet tea. The next morning at seven sharp all but one player showed-up for practice. That second night, like before, they all ended-up at the Scott house. This time Alma was ready with some cakes in addition to the Doritos and hot sauce, and of course, sweet tea. The team says that’s when their season really began.
As football season went on, the boys continued to meet at the Scott house. Alma would make stew, red beans and cornbread. Other football moms started sending cakes and other treats. Eventually, the boys started rotating houses but one thing remained constant, the Bobcat moms feeding the Bobcats. “I remember eventually we went from my house, to the Huddleston house to the Glendenning house. And they had sisters so the girls started coming around,” said Keith Scott, one of Alma Jo’s three boys. “You have to remember we didn’t have a Dairy Queen or Sonic or anything and if you wanted a cheeseburger or a pizza you had to drive to McKinney. None of us wanted to do that after a game, especially an away game, so we met at a home knowing we’d get fed.” This tradition gained traction and continued for the next several years.
In 1974, the original freshmen on Coach Browder’s team were now Seniors. Browder had moved on and G.A. Moore was now the head football coach. This same year, a football mom named Charlotte LeForge asked Coach Moore to meet with the moms to explain the basics of football so they could better understand what it was their sons were doing. This meeting with the moms then turned into a regular occurrence. The Quarterback Club already existed for the men, and now the ladies had an organized way to support the team. They began many traditions still honored today. One of which is the

tradition called “The Cookie Box” our boys continue to enjoy during play-off season. Loads and loads of cookies were freshly baked, bagged-up and put in the box for the boys and coaches to grab on the bus on the way home from games. Two boxes exist now, one for the offensive bus and one for the defensive bus. Tradition is still carried on as freshly baked cookies fill them and the boxes are covered with Bible verses from the moms to encourage the team. The deeper into the play-offs, much like the locker room, more decor and verses are added to the boxes. Many of the
recipes used then have been passed down and are baked by our football moms today. Another long-standing playoff tradition is known as “Bobcat Chicken” or “Chicken of Champions.” Coach Moore asked Celina mom, Sarah Waller, to make her famous chicken for the team each week. This process involved soaking the chicken in a buttermilk base overnight and then frying it. The team would enjoy a big dinner of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and many baked treats in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church. Today, our Bobcat players still enjoy Mrs. Waller’s
Leya Bryant Grubbs and her husband Brian have lived in Celina for seven years with their three children. She remains active in the community serving on various city and school committees as well as being a co-owner of Thrown Axe Co. Being a big sports family, the Grubbs love all things “bobcat” including athletics and tradition. They consider it an honor and a privilege to be part of the Bobcat Nation!
“Bobcat Chicken” recipe though tweaked over the years with different spices and seasonings depending on who’s making the mix.
Numerous women over the past several decades have laid the foundation for what is today an organization of over 175 members. Bobcat Moms is comprised of moms, grandmothers, aunts, step and foster moms. It exists “to encourage, assist and promote all Celina High School athletes and coaches through acts of service, scholarships and traditions.” In 2023 , Bobcat Moms gave away $15,000 in scholarships to our student athletes. Bobcats Moms provides snacks during two-a-days, financial support for endof-season banquets, and sandwich brown bags for travel.
They provide play-off meals and homes across town host numerous breakfasts and dinners for our athletes during their seasons. Bobcat Moms is said to supply nourishment to our Celina athletes because, “It’s the key to every Bobcat’s heart". Fifty years and dozens of homemade cookies later, we still have the Bobcat moms feeding the Bobcats.

Lovepacs was established in 2011 to provide food to students who would go hungry over long holiday breaks. Working in conjunction with local schools and volunteers, Lovepacs’ founding families wanted to equip communities to nourish children as an expression of 2 Corinthians 8:14:
“At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality”.
The Lovepacs Vision hopes that communities experience God's love by serving together to provide food for children in need. Working with school counselors to identify children in need, boxes of food include single serving items, canned protein, shelf-stable breakfast items like oatmeal, and some pantry staples. The goal is to provide weekend and school break meals for those students that rely on the school nutrition programs to sustain them.
Lovepacs currently operates in eighteen communities, more than 270 Texas schools, and has served over 3.5 million meals. Relying primarily on volunteers, Lovepacs hosts in excess of 5,000 volunteers every year. Service opportunities include food packing, inventory, food delivery. Other events require community involvement to be successful such as fundraising garage sales and food drives.
The Prosper, Celina, and Gunter communities have a Lovepacs chapter (Lovepacs PCG) co-chaired by Darlene Morton and Jeni Sexton. Darlene first became aware of the need for weekend food and the Lovepacs organization through a presentation with the Prosper Ladies Association Her involvement began with a fundraising garage sale and over the last five years, has increased to organizing large groups of volunteers, moving into and stocking a warehouse, loading vehicles for food delivery, among many other tasks. As with most non-profit ministry focused jobs, Darlene’s and Jeni’s husbands, Bill and Kevin, are intimately involved in the day-today operations. Picking up donations and delivering food and warehouse operations top their lists.
Lovepacs PCG specifically serves 106 children in Celina ISD. This includes providing two boxes of food every three weeks in the summer months. Service organizations like Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) and the Northern Collin County Zeta Phi Beta Sorority are regular volunteers in the food distribution schedule while local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, cheer squads and baseball teams organize food drives.

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Oh and bonus – they make you breakfast.
The eggs from backyard chickens are the best—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those delicious farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.
Chickens can provide family companionship, fun, entertainment, sustainable fresh food, and plenty of poop that gardeners prize as a natural fertilizer/composting material. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?
Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.
All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor.
Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.
Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.
Search Pinterest for “chicken coop building plans” if you’re building your own or consider going the luxury route with a gorgeous custom-built coop from a company like CutestCoops.com
Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.
