This month, we want to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. SPONSOR A HORSE PROGRAM WindyHill Equine Rescue and Rehoming, a local nonprofit, offers a program called “Sponsor A Horse”. Shay Morgan With Sort Home Design Group Shares Ways For Peaceful Living And Peaceful Giving

Shay Morgan, owner of Sort Home Design Group, has a passion for well-organized and decluttered homes, offices, and businesses. Through this passion, she knows her clients will gain peace of mind, reduce stress, and create an environment ready for making decisions and caring for your family. Shay’s business is to help her clients organize those hard to handle spaces such as master closets, pantries, children’s playrooms, kitchens, garages, and any place where clutter gathers in your home or office. Shay can design solutions that she and her team install or help inspire you to do your own Do It Yourself (DIY) projects. She recommends bringing in natural elements and candles to make the home feel festive without Santas and reindeer tucked in every corner. When putting away your holiday decorations and party supplies, she also recommends packing them by theme or color making it easier to use in the future. Shay loves the idea of passing on blessings through donations. So many people in our community are blessed and their homes are full of gently used household items, furniture, pantry items and clothing. Whether Shay is doing a pantry declutter, or you are cleaning the kids’ closets, be mindful of the items your family no longer uses. Shay recommends always keeping a donation bin in the garage. As you are decorating for the season, planning a holiday party, or simply doing the laundry, you can move unused, unwanted, or too small items to the donation bin at that time.

Rex & Sherese Glendenning REX Real Estate

Perhaps one of the most known charitable families in Celina are the Glendennings with REX Real Estate. Rex and Sherese Glendenning have been a part of the community for decades sponsoring and donating to “everything and anything that benefits Celina,” according to Sherese. From the new Turkey Trot, the Beware on the Square, to school organizations like Celina’s high school band or cheer, REX Real Estate is involved. Everyone enjoys the spray-painted hay bales along Preston Road. These have been supplied for over twenty years by Rex, and now his son-in-law Caleb Lavey helps to paint them. This task is very labor intensive but provides great town and school spirit cheering on the Celina Bobcats for years. Sherese Glendenning says, “It really is Rex’s passion to give back, and has been a passion of his family forever. Ever since his great grandfather (Celina founder) arrived in Celina, the family has helped people.” The Glendenning Family and REX Real Estate are synonymous with service and giving back to their beloved town. Tammie Dunn Walker of Ameriprise Financial Wealth Management in Celina repeatedly tells her children “the greatest way to receive is to give,” and she truly gives. As the Director of Development for the Celina Education Foundation Board, and active member of the Celina Ladies of Influence, Tammie dedicates her time to serve Celina schools plus fellow businesswomen. Tammie and her family have long believed in volunteering. They started out helping at a food pantry packing food and making goodie bags for kids. When they moved to Celina, the family continued assisting at Grace Bridge and various projects with the Young Men’s Service League. At work, Tammie and her employees support area causes and sponsorships. She sponsors many events like the city golf tournament, Chamber Wine Crawl, and Oktoberfest to name a few. She also believes in “putting your money where your mouth is”. Her office makes it a point, as part of their annual plan, to determine where they are going to serve in the community as a team. Previously, they have worked for the Dallas Birthday Party Project, Family Place, and as mentioned, Grace Bridge in Celina. Tammie is so glad that people can volunteer back in person now post pandemic. Tammie Dunn Walker knows that while “you are the one giving back, you receive a whole lot more than what you give.” As evident by her firm’s sponsorships, her civic involvement, and her personal volunteering, Tammie is a master at giving.

Scott Snellings Snellings Injury Law

Another believer of helping the community is Scott Snellings. He is the founder of Snellings Law, a personal injury law firm with a heart. While that might sound like an oxymoron to many, their actions prove differently. “Our firm runs off core values which include love for our community. That starts within the four walls of our firm and then moves outside to helping the communities where we live and work. Part of the way we do that is through our monthly service projects,” he continues. Every month the law firm employees meet to plan charitable events. With law offices in Frisco and Sherman, but also living in Celina, Scott focuses on helping these areas. This past August, an employee experienced grandparents suffering health issues requiring hospital care. While her grandfather was in a hospital, her grandmother stayed at Reba’s (yes, that Reba) Ranchhouse near Sherman. As such, the law firm learned more about Reba’s Ranchhouse and donated much needed equipment aiding mothers of newborns, the elderly, and families of people in the local hospital. The law firm also sponsors area organizations like Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County, ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship, and local education foundations and food banks. Scott also gives to the National Kidney Foundation, something personal to him, as he is a kidney transplant recipient thanks to his best friend. Scott honors his friend each day by trying “to make this world a better place through serving others.” No doubt Scott Snellings understands the term giving back.

Mike & Jan Sampeck Christian Brothers Automotive - Celina Mike and Jan Sampeck, owners of Christian Brothers Automotive in Celina recently were awarded Community Friendly Business of the Year for a reason. Jan Sampeck says, “Our whole goal for getting into the automotive repair business is to be an agent of good. That means not only in serving people but also making a difference in our community.” Their involvement in Celina includes sponsorship of local events including National Night Out, Splash ‘N Blast, and the Ladies of Influence events. But Jan Sampeck believes their real calling is using their business to help. This past October on National Service Day, Christian Brothers conducted over thirty thousand dollars’ worth of free oil changes and safety auto repair work

for people in need. Partnering with Grace Bridge and Cornerstone charities, the Sampecks served people who could not afford repairs. In addition, Christian Brothers Automotive repaired a car donated to Grace Bridge and made it operable to give to a single mom in Celina. Last summer, Christian Brothers Automotive started a new program called “The DipJar”. Each month a local nonprofit is selected. When a customer donates or “dips” $15 into the jar, Christian Brothers will take $30 off the repair bill. Jan states, “The donations go directly to that nonprofit, so your donation makes a difference, plus you get a discount as well.” As a former minister, Jan Sampeck recognizes the importance of public service. “It is our heart to be a light in a dark industry, to help those that need it most”.

CELINA FIRE DEPARTMENT COMMUNITY FOCUSED AND PURPOSE DRIVEN

Celina Fire Department members are committed to a Servant Leadership culture that highly prizes commitment to the Celina community, to the fire department, and to every member of the department. Focusing on accountability, family, and duty, the Celina Fire Department works to provide fire prevention and management and programs designed to protect the lives and property of those who live and work in Celina. Jessica Pichardo, Admin Communications Manager with Celina FD, shared information about the department and some of its programs. Celina currently has 2 operating stations: Station 1 on Preston Road and Station 2 in Light Farms. Station 3 located in Sutton Fields is scheduled to open in winter 2024. CFD employs a staff of 62, including firefighters, admin, and fire prevention. The department is actively interviewing to hire 6 firefighters for station 3.

CELINA FIRE DEPARTMENT COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS: • Car Seat Inspection Program - Firefighters certified through safekids.org inspect car seats in vehicles for correct installation and offering safety tips. Partnerships with Texas Health Resources and Cook Children's Medical Center work to provide replacement car seats if a parent’s

current seat needs replacement. Schedule a free car seat check through Celina FD’s Admin Communications Manager, Jessica Pichardo at jpichardo@celina-tx.gov. • Citizens Fire Academy – a free program to help the residents of Celina be aware of the services that the Fire Department provides, increase fire and life safety awareness, and promote a positive image of the department to the community. The classes provide an up close and personal look into the daily life of a Celina Firefighter with the hope that Celina citizens will fall in love with the fire department and firefighters and have a better appreciation of the department. The academy consists of weekly classes across ten sessions. Firefighters read at the schools and the library and bring along fire trucks for extra engagement. • The Water Watchers Program - Beginning the summer of 2023 to educate the community and keep kids safe, CFD has partnered with Baylor Scott & White Health on the Water Watchers Program. Watcher is a responsible adult who is designated to watch the kids in the water without distractions and wear a Water Watcher badge and lanyard. Lanyards can be picked up at Station 1 and 2. • C-Town LAFS - LAFS is an international organization committed to reducing loss of life, property, and injuries caused by fire and other situations through clowning and puppetry. The program consists of an assembly-style show targeting life safety messages to children in Celina ISD and Prosper ISD elementary schools within the city limits of Celina. The characters are active Celina Fire Department Firefighters and are performed throughout October in honor of Fire Prevention Month. The 2023 Mario Brothers theme involves the characters baking a pizza and what happens when it burns due to lack of attention. The skit focuses on this year's fire safety theme "Cooking Safety Starts with You". • Flipping Pancakes for Fire Prevention – In late September to kick-off October’s Fire Prevention Month. This year, Celina firefighters served over 100 pancakes on Celina’s

Historic Downtown Square and distributed free potholders to enforce this year’s cooking safety theme. • Fire Santa – Track the Truck as Santa aka Assistant Fire Chief Eric Everson makes his way to Celina neighborhoods in a fire truck parade. Beginning November 30th, line the streets with your neighbors and get ready to wave and cheer as Santa sits atop a CFD engine. Find the neighborhood schedule here: Fire Santa | Celina, TX - Life Connected (celina-tx.gov) A new non-profit organization, Fire Foundation of Celina, began in July 2023 to strengthen community engagement in its efforts to support the fire department of Celina. Specifically, the foundation will provide hydration to the crews during interventions and events, provide additional support during community events such as open houses and Flipping Pancakes for Fire Prevention, and host fundraisers for educational needs and personal protection equipment. Membership in FFC requires graduation from the city’s Citizen Fire Academy. During Covid, I started going on road trips and taking scenic photographs of beautiful small towns in Texas. While driving down County Road 134, I noticed a house for sale, and a man was outside watering flowers. I stopped at the gate, waved, and he invited me in for a tour of the historical home that was built in 1917 and told me stories of when Bonnie & Clyde used to hide out there. I made an offer, moved to Celina and immediately fell in love with the people and community. I love Christmas, and I knew that I wanted to create a beautiful product that would allow me to give back to the Celina community. I started sketching my photos of the historical landmarks and rural landscapes into an ornamental design, and the Celina Collection was born! I named my business CurioCity Designs because cu-ri-o means a rare, unusual, or intriguing object. A treasure. Each ornament in the Celina Collection is inspired by photos and emblems in a montage of designs representing Historical Downtown Celina, Texas Sunsets & Longhorns, and Celina Bobcats. The creative process begins by sketching the design on the ornament, and then the figures are hand-painted with each color having to dry up to 24 hours, so the next color can be added. My team has worked over a year producing the inaugural Celina Collection 2023, and we are already in the planning phases for new designs and collaborations with local organizations and businesses for 2024. I also want to host a workshop that helps women become entrepreneurs and start local businesses to support their families and the community. It has been a family tradition for my parents to give us a unique ornament each year, and I have great memories of us opening the ornament and hanging it on the tree Christmas Eve. Now I have those childhood ornaments on my own Christmas tree, and I cherish every one of them. This year we will continue the tradition with the Celina Collection! The Celina Collection ornaments are available on CurioCityDesigns.com, local shops downtown, and holiday market events including Christmas on the Square and the Holiday Sip & Shop. We have also partnered with local non-profits and charitable organizations to give back to the community, and you can follow CurioCity Designs on social media for more details. ROOTED THE CELINA AREA HERITAGE MUSEUM

The Celina Area Heritage Association Visitor’s Center and Museum is not just another place along West Pecan Street, it truly is a deep vault of all things Celina and the keys to the history of what makes our community what it is today. The vision for the local museum began about twenty-five years ago, when friends discussed the unique history of Celina and the people who called Celina home. Beloved and long time community members, including Jane Huddleston, Bob McKnight and Jane Williard had many conversations stressing the importance of preserving these stories so the special history would not disappear. Their little plan started to come to fruition when the Celina newspaper stopped publishing in the building located just off the square. This group saw an amazing opportunity to use that space as a hub to house it all. When they finally bought the building, and all of the contents inside, reconstruction began to meet the needs of what the association wanted to showcase. Through the years, the association and museum has been the recipient of many generous donations and acquisitions of unique pieces. Jane Willard shared, “Once word got out about what we were doing, things just started to land in our laps.” Fast forward to late March 2023, when a phone call came in to relay the news that water was running out the front door of this passion project. This is exactly what happened to members of the Board of the Celina Area Heritage Association Visitor’s Center and Museum. This flood was an inconvenience but also a heart break to those who have spent time sharing the story of the Celina area, but perspective is everything! Instead of viewing this as debilitating, the board took this as an opportunity to reimagine and restructure the gift they provide to the community and surrounding areas. “This flood was not good. It could have been traumatic, but it allowed us to do some things we may not have been able to do,” Jane Huddleston commented. Once the flood was cleaned up, the artifacts, furniture and fixtures were removed, and remediation then began. It was clear this would not be a quick thirty day turn around to start again. Bob McKnight explained, “We could examine what the situation was

and ask how do we improve given this opportunity?” The temporary closure allowed for improvements to be made that may have only been talked or dreamt about. The Board took this as a gift of time to gather ideas for improvement and refined vision. You could say they have had the opportunity to put their heads together and come out of the other side with a better museum for our community. Just as the museum has received numerous donations, both in artifacts and financial gifts, through the years, they are extremely blessed with amazing human capital. The Celina Area Heritage Association Visitor’s Center and Museum has an incredible board made up of gifted individuals, including businessmen and women, long time residents and newer residents alike, those who have worked within the city for a long time and others who bring new perspectives and ideas. Prior to the flood, the board was enhanced with some newer members who brought great ideas. “Everyone has a special talent they contribute,” Huddleston said. Each member, while different, shares a common goal: to ensure the history of Celina continues to be shared and celebrated. In talking with those involved in the organization, you learn each member is just as selfless as the next, fast to shine the spotlight on the talents of someone else. You also quickly realize each person brings a very unique skill set which is showcased as the museum begins the reopening process. Rachel Baty, owner of Annie Jack, and Susan Gray have overseen the renovation of the space while collaborating with the board. Bob noted the improvements are not only to the building, but also to the exhibits. The layout has changed, and there will be a new brightness within the space, but the history remains. Favorites will still be showcased including vast collections of military memorabilia and “Celina Then and Now,” but there are also new feature pieces to be revealed upon the museum’s reopening. The boxes of artifacts arrived at the freshly updated building at the end of October and members are excitedly opening them and placing the historical items in their new home. is overseeing the reopening event which will be held hopefully before the end of November. “Everything is a joint effort. We have a great board, a great relationship with the city, the college and Celina schools,” Huddleston reflected. Again, another example of the selflessness of those involved. Everyone is so quick to sing the praises of everyone else. Another opportunity that took the efforts of the board and other volunteers is providing an opportunity to allow history to come alive for all Celina Middle School students. Last year, the museum hosted students from Moore Middle School and the goal is for this unique experience to continue in this updated space. “It is so important to take history out of a book, off the page and make history real,” said Willard. Providing the opportunity for students to learn about the roots of the community and make connections to how this place had a role in many of the things they read about is a lesson that will make a great impact. “We welcome input,” Bob mentioned. He explained that it is so important for our community to know they too are a part of the history of Celina. “If you move here and stay here any amount of time, you are part of the history.” He encouraged residents who have been here a while and new residents alike to come out to see the many treasures in the collections. Willard expanded upon this sharing, “The museum is a place a new community member could visit, come in, talk and learn about this new place where they have moved.” How fortunate are we to have passionate historians sharing what they know and have learned themselves. Celina is a place with a very unique feeling, and it is partly attributed to where and how it began and who has lived in this place. The Celina Area Heritage Association Visitor’s Center and Museum will make sure we all have the opportunity to see the journey this town has been on and provide a glimpse into where we are headed. Place your favorite holiday cookie cutter on the board first. Fill the cookie cutter with mini marshmallows. Next, layer the large items first. Autumn is a lovely season to have friends and family over for dinner. Why not host an elegant but casual gathering before the holiday craziness begins? A table setting of white dishes, woven placemats, copper utensils, and linen napkins decorated with succulent or herb clippings creates a stylish atmosphere conducive to conversation and enjoyment. This simple menu will allow you to host a stress-free evening.

While your guests enjoy a pre-dinner glass of wine or cocktail, set out a cheese board for them to nibble on. It is much simpler to assemble than a full-on charcuterie board. The basic rule is to offer three types of cheese—one blue (stilton, Roquefort, gorgonzola), one hard (cheddar, gruyere, manchego), and one soft (brie, camembert, Port Salut). Feel free to add olives, nuts, and grapes to the board, or just keep it simple like this one pictured with slices of artisan bread, crackers, and breadsticks.

ROASTED BEET SALAD

The dinner’s main event is a lovely piece of beef seasoned with a this spice rub. Use a steak of your choice grilled or seared in a cast iron skillet. • • • • • • • •

6 medium beets Olive oil, for drizzling Salt and pepper to taste 1 bag of salad greens 1/4 cup toasted pecans, coarsely chopped • 2 ounces of goat or feta cheese • 1/4 cup chopped dried apricots • Favorite vinaigrette dressing

3 parts brown sugar 3 parts smoked sea salt 1 part smoked paprika ½ part coriander ½ part chili powder ¼ part cayenne pepper ¼ part dried thyme ¼ part cracked pepper

Mix all spices and apply liberally to the beef. Place the seasoned meat in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Allow it to come to room temperature before grilling or searing.

Coat the beets with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Place on a baking sheet. Roast in a 400-degree oven for 45 minutes until fork tender. Cool for 10 minutes, and then rub with paper towels to peel. (Beet juice stains, so be careful.) Cut the beets and toss with the remaining ingredients.

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
