Often, traditions are rooted in gratitude. In this issue, we explore some of Celina's traditions that have been practiced year after year helping to bring our community closer. On page 42, we learn some of our local residents' favorite traditions. The inaugural Celina Turkey Trot presented by Celina Lifestyle will be this Thanksgiving morning at Old Celina Park. Building Camaraderie And Serving The Community The Marine Corps League, a sanctuary for dedicated Marines and FMF Corpsmen who have proudly worn or currently wear the revered eagle, globe and anchor, is a place where the cherished camaraderie of their service days comes to life once more. Nathan Hanson, a past detachment commandant and paymaster, reflects on the League's profound impact: "Many members have shared their struggles with mental health, and connecting with fellow veterans who share similar experiences has been a lifeline for them." In the vast landscape of veteran support, countless heroes are in need but are unsure of how to access resources. As a local veteran organization, the Marine Corps League acts as a vital bridge, connecting veterans with organizations eager to help. Hanson recounts one of their success stories: "We once learned of a Marine and his 3-year-old daughter who were living in a shelter. We were able to intervene, securing them a home, aiding in job placement, fixing their car, and helping them regain their independence." The Marine Corps League offers a lifeline to veterans when they need it most.

248TH MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY BALL Traditionally reserved for Marines, their companions, and esteemed guests, the Marine Corps Birthday Ball is a cherished celebration of military heritage and history. For the seventh consecutive year, the Collin County Marine Corps League extends a warm invitation to the community to partake in this unforgettable event. In honoring this time-honored tradition, Marines historically have come together on or around November 10th to share a birthday cake, whether in times of battle or peace. COLLIN COUNTY TOYS FOR TOTS Every holiday season, a heartwarming tradition takes root across the United States, delivering smiles and hope to countless children in need through Toys for Tots. In Collin County, this noble initiative is spearheaded by the LCpl Jacob D. Hayes Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Collin County is renowned for its generosity, particularly when it comes to children. Toys for Tots represents more than just toys; it symbolizes a beacon of hope for families grappling with financial hardships, offering a glimpse of the holiday magic every child deserves. The program collects new, unwrapped toys and ensures they find their way into the hands of children who might otherwise wake up to empty stockings on Christmas morning. EVENTS: Local residents have easy access to all the city events hosted in the Square. Natasha Hickman (First State Bank), born and raised Celina resident who is raising her family downtown, loves “National Night Out in October. It is a great event to bring community together, old and new. With the continued growth, this is another way for neighbors of all ages to meet and enjoy food and fellowship. This event is held in the Square for those in town and not part of a subdivision or HOA.” Christmas on the Square, Cajun Fest and Oktoberfest are other favorites of the downtown community. SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS: Downtown serves as the hub of the city offering activities and events, shopping and dining options. It is pedestrian and golf cart friendly. Holly Farrow of Holly Farrow Photography lives and works downtown. She loves how “Downtown Celina preserves its past even amidst the growth.” Painted murals grace many of the buildings in the Square, reminding residents and visitors of Celina’s history and traditions. When you mix a quaint downtown square bustling with activity and a Hallmark-like small town Christmas tree lighting event, you have the formula for a perfect faith-based holiday movie. For 11 days in November and December 2022, Producer, Director and Actor Angus Benfield of Bridge & Acorn Entertainment brought The Great Turkey Town Miracle to life in downtown Celina and across the community. Local writers, Steve Dini and Joren Christensen, wrote an inspiring tale of redemption, faith, family, and the power of prayer. They met years earlier through friends at the church they both attend in California. Writing and movie-making had been a passion for both. Dini found he had a good idea for a movie based on his own story as an unemployed radio DJ. But he found he needed a story with more depth to help f lush out the characters. He soon joined forces with Joren Christensen whose wife had passed away some years earlier. They worked on the project for a while, meeting up from time to time

to solve story and plot problems, but overall, both agree it was a great collaboration. That collaboration resulted in a story that they both truly enjoyed. The screenplay for The Great Turkey Town Miracle is a mash up of both Dini and Christensen’s real-life events and include the story of job loss, widowhood, new job, and overcoming overwhelming obstacles with the power of prayer. As the story develops, the central character, played by Angus Benfield, must gather four thousand turkeys before Thanksgiving to keep his new job and family together. Benfield of Bridge & Acorn Entertainment had purchased the rights to the script and shared that it would be 5th on his company’s production list. But after learning more about Celina, The Great Turkey Town Miracle quickly jumped-up Benfield’s priority list. The real star of this movie is the City of Celina. The movie opens with a flyover of the Celina water tower. You will also see featured businesses on the square including Hey Sugar, Papa Gallo’s Mexican Grill, and Tender Smokehouse BBQ. Celina Independent School District (ISD) joined the fun by allowing the Celina ISD Administration building, Bobcat Field and inside the Celina High School as featured locations. Finally, as the story progresses, Gracebridge volunteered to use its trucks and warehouse to store the growing number of Thanksgiving turkeys. Celina got involved in the project through Dini’s wife Susan, who is a Hallmark movie fan. She mentioned to her husband how

much Celina’s Christmas on the Square event reminded her of a perfect holiday movie. After some research and talking with city officials, it was decided that Celina and its Christmas tree lighting event would be the perfect backdrop for their story. It’s not an easy task to film a movie without interrupting the community’s engagement in one of the city’s biggest annual events. Several planning meetings with the City of Celina and Joe Monaco, Director of Marketing & Communications, and Jill Roza, Strategic Relations Specialist at Celina ISD, created a plan to achieve those specific goals. The night of filming during Christmas on the Square, the film crew, writers and actors could not have been happier with how it all came together. Dini shares how the people of Celina had shown such great hospitality. "They went about enjoying their event, and we were filming. There was no one jumping around trying to get in the movie, no crazy hand gestures popping up. People were curious, but not in a way that disrupted the filming." Many local actors and students were involved in the filming of the movie for small roles and extras. Both writers share how friendly, professional, and easy to work with everyone in Celina seems to be. Students from Celina High School Advanced Drama Class, football team and band were used in many of the school scenes. Instead of paying Celina ISD a location fee, Bridge & Acorn Entertainment was able to fund scholarships that were awarded to Celina High School class of 2023 graduating seniors. Hopefully, this will not be the last movie filmed in and around Celina. Melissa Thomas, Celina’s Director of Marketing and Tourism, shared that the city has fulfilled the Film Friendly Texas certification requirements and is currently in the process of working with the FFTX representatives on announcing Celina’s certification. This certification will allow Celina to be added to the FFTX website and open the door for more location specialists to consider Celina. The Great Turkey Town Miracle is expected to be released on November 10th. Christensen shared that they expect to have the movie released to theaters nationwide. You will want to make plans to see this feel-good movie with your family and friends this holiday season.

B O B C AT BENNIE THEN & NOW

“Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar; all for the Bobcats, stand up and holler!” This familiar chant echoes on Fridays in Celina. The athletes in their uniforms, cheerleaders with their poms, students, parents and community in the stands wearing the Celina orange are all constants. Since the early 1970’s, Bobcat Bennie has been part of our spirited landscape as well. Susie Miller Hester, a familiar face here in Celina, was the first person to wear a Bobcat suit, an idea proposed within the community. “My mom worked for the district for a long time and served as the Junior High drill team instructor. Mom had a friend who found a suit, a Bobcat suit. She told me I should wear it and I did. I would put the suit on in the back of the car and make my way into the game.” Susie shared the experiences in the suit back in 1973-1974 were nothing like the experiences now. The Bobcat was still found on the sidelines during a game, but not at every game and not at pep

rallies; it was still in its infancy. “I wore the lightweight suit for the year and that was it. The people really seemed to like it. It was new and different.” About ten years after Susie first paraded in that bobcat suit, a campaign began to name the Bobcat. The community got behind the movement. The mascot was named in honor of Bennie Brewer, a long time dedicated Celina supporter known to wear orange suits and tirelessly cheer on the Bobcats. And so it goes that in 1984, our mascot was no longer a nameless Bobcat suit, but officially became Bobcat Bennie! Bennie engages in various antics and stunts to engage everyone. Bobcat Bennie brings joy and excitement to the young and not so young. Since Spring of 2020, Gracie Myers has served as Bobcat Bennie, having worn the Bobcat all four years of her high school career. “It’s an important role because Celina has only one school district and one high school. Bennie is the representative of all things here,

and Bennie represents Celina and CHS in other communities!” Through the years, many have worn the costume and served the role. It is a responsibility that takes a lot of time and commitment. Gracie probably averages twenty-five appearances each semester on behalf of the school and community. She also attends cheer camp every summer with cheerleaders to hone her skills and gain specific coaching on crowd engagement resulting in being named as an All-American for two straight years. Serving in this role continues to require flexibility and time. When our community was staying at home in 2020, Bennie was engaging with the community through social media to keep the spirit! Gracie will be graduating in May of 2024 and at that time the torch will pass to a new Bennie. “I hope that the next Bennie loves it as much as I have. I do it because I love to entertain people, I love the kids, and I get to be silly and goofy. I love to do this for the community, but I also love doing it for me.” Bobcat Bennie was, is, and will remain a symbol of spirit and excitement. Many have worn the Bobcat over the years. The uniform and costumes have changed and evolved, but the mission of Bobcat Bennie remains the same. Bennie supports the identity of CHS and has a huge presence at athletic events, campus activities and various community events. Go Bobcats!

A Look at One of Celina’s Beloved Local Musicians

For local musician CJ Briscoe, music has always been his heartbeat. Born in Fort Worth but raised in Nashville, his taste for music started at a young age. “I was surrounded by music and musicians all the time between the places down there we’d hang out at church. It was a really big music scene with amazing musicians in the church bands,” CJ said. His parents’ role in his love for music can’t be overlooked. They introduced CJ to all the hits from the 60’s to the 90’s and gave him his first instrument for Christmas at the age of six, a harmonica. Faced with a 12-hour drive back to Tennessee from Florida, his parents feared the worst for the ride home with a six year old and his new noise-maker. But when CJ started playing the opening tune of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man,” they knew he had talent and put him in guitar lessons. CJ took lessons with a teacher who reinforced his love of music until he moved to Texas. He put music down for about a year, then

had to start from scratch and reteach himself. From there, CJ started gigging at Lucy’s on the Square when he was 14. “My parents had to drag me to my first gig. I didn’t want to go; I was too nervous,” CJ said. Clearly, the recovery from that first gig ended up all right. When he started gigging, he played more niche music that people didn’t recognize, but he noticed how the classic music he was raised on would perk ears. Slowly, his setlist began to take form as a mixture of 60’s to 90’s hits, classic rock, classic country, and really any music by request, which he has gotten his name for as a solo cover artist. Once the pandemic slowed down, CJ began booking more gigs, especially in Downtown Celina, and around the DFW metroplex. He branched out of his comfort zone a year and a half ago, taking on the role as lead guitarist and songwriter for southern rock band Caleb Michael and the Arrested, who has been seeing their own successes. He has also

recently started his own group, an indie rock band called St. Ivy. Though it was a learning curve at first, the band experience, CJ says, has been for the better. “Being a solo artist, you can just be in your comfort zone all the time. When you’re playing with a band, sometimes for the greater good of the sound, you have to take up a different role…I feel like I’ve grown a lot from that,” CJ said. Both bands have upcoming music releases, most of which were written by CJ, in addition to some personal music releases in the works. All of these projects have been behind the scenes along with building and opening of his own recording studio, Blue Bison Records, which he co-owns and serves as the lead producer for. The work is hard, but the reward is abundant. “I get to do what I love and work with what I love. Whether it be playing for people, or writing, or recording, or whatever. I love all facets of music,” CJ said. “The creative realm. The creative space that I have; even just like day to day in solo shows and stuff like that is ideal for me. I would be lost in a place where I had no room to be creative.” To keep up with CJ’s music, he is on Facebook and Instagram at CJ Briscoe Music and his debut EP “Radiate,” released August 11, is on all streaming platforms. With a menu designed to showcase the quality of the ingredients rather than hiding behind pretentious presentation, expect the unexpected. Although traditional cuts of beef expertly prepared by the chef will be the star of the show, the organic greens on the salad bar will most certainly steal some of the thunder! Classic accompaniments such as potatoes and asparagus that grace most steakhouse menus will certainly delight, but fresh parmesan-stuffed tomatoes and other side specialties are soon to make your list of favorites. All across the menu you’ll find personal touches from the Ethridge family, including namesake menu items from their three kids, such as the bacon-wrapped Shrimp Bennett, Linnie’s mac and cheese, and a to-die-for chocolate hazelnut mousse whose recipe was created by their daughter Carrie–and refined with help from Mikayla Everson at Granny’s Bakery. Kristen is also including her favorite Caesar Blue Cheese as a signature salad dressing. The love and personal attention to detail will be unmistakable in every item. A THANKFUL TRIBUTE F O R M E R M AYO R S E A N T E R R Y S E R V E S T H E C I T Y T H AT H E L O V E S

Twenty-five years, a quarter of a century. That’s how long Sean Terry served Celina, his town, his home. Sean Terry is best known as the former mayor dedicating half his life serving Celina. The “Punter from Gunter”, Sean grew up a coach’s son moving often. He graduated from Gunter as a four sport All-American athlete. During his senior year, Sean became a Gunter volunteer firefighter and his athletic talents earned him a full football scholarship playing for Texas A&M University. At the end of his freshman year of college, Sean met his wife, Angie. While Angie and Sean did not know each other until college, their parents had the same circle of friends. Believing it was fate, they married six months later, after the Aggies played in the 1993 Cotton Bowl. After college, The Terrys moved to Celina. Sean had a brief stint with the Carolina Panthers and then as a Graduate Assistant at Texas A&M but decided not to coach. He worked in sales for a tractor company where he would make sales calls on cities. Sean recalls, “I was never one to have just one job, so I also helped a buddy doing land title work.” The tractor company got bought out, so he called on an old acquaintance, Mehrdad Moayedi of Centurion American Development Group. “I understood how cities worked and the planning process,” says Sean. “I thought I would be a good fit at Centurion and have now been there almost 12 years,” he continued.

Sean wished to serve, so he returned as a volunteer firefighter in Celina. He volunteered for 11 years, even helping hire the first Fire Chief. In 1997, Celina had 15 firefighters who helped mow the city park as city funds were limited. This is where Sean met Corbett Howard (Celina Councilman at time) forming a long friendship. Flash forward to 2009 when the city council gained an open seat. Corbett suggested Sean run, which he did victoriously. As the city grew, it became difficult to be a councilmember and firefighter, so he left the department and stayed on council until 2013. The mayor at the time resigned to move and Sean “threw my hat in the race and won,” he said. He was elected and served the next 10 years. Sean doesn’t boast of accomplishments, although there are many such as preparing for Celina’s growth. “We knew growth was coming so we started early forming relationships with state and local governments,” Sean recalls. The council realized Celina would need to focus on infrastructure before the growth came. “We were prepared,” Sean states. Council worked with developers and government agencies at all levels. Sean notes, “We knew to make downtown special to attract people to come here. It’s part of the infrastructure.” Second, he served as Vice President (and later President) of the North Texas Mayors Association. Celina never had that level of CONTINUED >

representation before. “It helped us learn and get ahead of the game. It gave Celina notoriety,” says Sean. Perhaps most notable is Sean’s leadership during the Covid Pandemic. Sean thought, “Do I want to live in a world that is scared, or do I want to be a leader?” He decided the goal was to make sure every business knew it was essential. Sean started updating people weekly – sometimes daily – via Facebook Live. Because developments were constantly changing, Sean knew citizens needed to hear him support businesses, citizens, plus first responders. He wanted to show unity, so he proceeded with the annual Fourth of July event. “We were the only city in the county that had a Fourth of July event,” Sean says. “If it’s good for the town, it needs to be done,” he strongly affirms. Lastly, Sean credits the “little things” as a success. For example, he’s grateful the city employee turnover rate was only 2% over the last five years. He is proud the city acknowledged Celina students’ achievements and honors. And, he’s extremely proud of Celina becoming the “first gigabit town". He notes, “I probably didn’t toot my horn enough, I don’t care. I don’t live by all my accomplishments, but I worked hard for the city.”

Former Celina Mayor Corbett Howard, now Market President of Lamar National Bank, confirms Sean’s leadership and legacy. “Sean showed up for every crisis event in Celina, leading rescue efforts. He was a thoughtful, stable leader.” Howard continues, “As Mayor, he led Celina from a population of 7,500 to the current population of 43,000. He led the infrastructure expansion without raising taxes, plus helped Celina to be the first Gigabit City in Texas. During COVID, he protected our citizens allowing businesses to survive. Sean had compassion and vision for Celina. He was the perfect leader for the city he loves.” Currently, The Terrys are enjoying more free time while building a new house in Celina. “I am not leaving Celina,” he proclaims. He credits his family supporting him the last twenty-five years. “It was hard on my family—they’re unsung heroes. My family put up with a lot, and I missed a lot of family events. I am very thankful to have them by my side,” he notes. The Terrys just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Their two children are Celina graduates and proud Aggies. Kylee is a teacher in Wylie and Kade is graduating in May. Sean is active with Texas A&M football and concentrating now on his “one” job. “I put my heart and soul into that job. We embraced the growth and prepared for it. I think that is our greatest legacy,” Sean says. No doubt as Celina continues to develop, the citizens will benefit from the legacy left by Mayor Sean Terry.

With new businesses coming to Celina along Preston Rd, Frontier Rd, and the North Texas Tollway, one begins to wonder what will happen to the Celina Square and the downtown Celina neighborhoods. The downtown area of Celina is the jewel of the community. Its small businesses, special events and Friday Night Markets create a draw for people all over the DFW metro area. When you ask people what first drew them to Celina, they consistently mention the sense of small town and community found in the downtown area. We asked three professional real estate experts, Coryann Johnson with Texas Homes and Land, Dana Draper with Fidelity National Title, and Ron Lyons owner of Project Celina, who all work in the downtown area to share their thoughts on the future of downtown Celina for families, businesses, and entertainment. Each professional points to the city’s leadership and Celina Economic Development Corporation for working hard to bring small businesses to the square and support for them through unique community events and activities. They share there will be years of transition for downtown Celina. At the top of the list are major infrastructure improvements, street improvements, relocating city hall, and the development of parks and a vibrant entertainment district. It will take strong leadership to accomplish all these projects and keep Celina’s unique personality intact. This type of growth and change will create a very active real estate environment. It’s campfire season! You know what that means? S’MORES! These sweet treats are staples during the fall and winter! I have many childhood memories of sitting by the campfire with my family telling stories, gazing at the stars, and roasting marshmallows. This year, take your s’mores to a whole new level with this S’mores Dessert Board! They are so easy and fun to make! Similar to a Charcuterie Board, a S’mores Dessert Board is beautifully decorated and full of everything you need to make the perfect s’mores! Some of my favorite things to include in a s’mores are either peanut butter or a mint chocolate candy!

W H AT YOU W ILL NEED: Board: A beautiful wood board or metal tray will look great! Marshmallows: Choose between regular, jumbo, or flavored marshmallows. Chocolate: There are so many options for chocolate when it comes to s’mores! There’s milk chocolate, peanut butter chocolates, white chocolate, caramel chocolates, and much more! Graham Crackers: Use graham crackers or a variety of cookies for your s’mores. Fresh Fruit: Include fresh fruits as toppings for your s’mores. Falling For Neutrals SEASONAL DECOR TIPS FOR KEEPING IT SIMPLE I love decorating for the holiday season, but it gets tough if trying to keep a home decor airy, light and neutral. My home is full of neutrals, such as linen, khaki, white and gray, so decorating for the holidays can be tricky with the bright and bold themes on display at the stores. Here are tips regarding how to achieve a festive look without going overboard.

LESS IS MORE First, whenever decorating for the holiday season, I clear what's possible to make room for what's coming. I eliminate decor pieces that are displayed year-round to avoid adding clutter to rooms. Giving decor pieces or floral arrangements their own space to shine can pull the room together and make it feel very designed.

GO COZY Swapping out usual throw pillows and throw blankets for plushy, cuddly materials and seasonal prints are another simple way to add holiday spirit without being so literal. Opting for neutral plaids, cable knits, or sherpa materials add that feeling of fall and winter.

CATER TO ALL THE SENSES Don’t forget about the smell! Stocking up on candles that smell like the season is the last missing piece for a holiday vibe. The total sensory feeling of the holidays is what really brings a home to life, whether it's pumpkin spice burning for Thanksgiving or a fresh pine and cedar for Christmas.

STICK TO THE PALETTE As best as possible, I try to stick to each of the color palettes in my room. When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.

CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.

LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries
