As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. I spent my summer preparing myself, as well as my oldest kid, for the bittersweet goodbye at his college campus. I know it is really a "see you soon" (Parent's weekend is in September!) but knowing this was our last summer before he flies the nest helped make it extra special. Our August issue is dedicated to the kids who fill our summers for 18 years and the pets who love us when they leave. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. Read all about our CTE program at Celina High School and how they are partnering with Collin College to create future-ready students. We also get a chance to sit down with local Celina resident Wendy Osburn, a teacher at Gunter High School, and hear how she is planting new seeds in our community. The animals we love (and never leave us for college) are having their moment in A Human's Best Friend. We also have an opportunity to learn about equine therapy at 4 Hooves For Hearts and how animals and people are healing each other. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love. Enjoy that blackberry margarita (p.50) and we'll see you around town!

Meet Becky Shewuck – native Dallasite, business founder and owner, wife, mother, and grandmother. An additional role close to her heart is Equine Specialist. Becky purchased her current Celina acreage in her 20’s while establishing a successful residential construction company in Dallas. Over the years the desire grew to combine her passion for horses and the love of her land into a meaningful partnership. Out of that dream, the non-profit “4 Hooves for Hearts” was established. “4 Hooves for Hearts” provides the space to allow a licensed therapist and a trained horse professional to meet with individuals, families, and groups by providing opportunities to develop skills for problem-solving, overcoming obstacles, and tackling psychotherapy goals. Becky and her team collaborate treatment through Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) which focuses on experiences between the client and the horse. Experiencing Becky’s love of horses and people first-hand is a treat. I had the privilege of meeting with her and discussing her love for serving people and her life-long love of horses while we walked through the multi-stalled barn and covered arena. Becky is an accomplished horsewoman and has achieved the highest recognized level of training offered through the Parelli Natural Horsemanship program. During her training, she established a non-profit organization, WindyHill Equine Rescue and Rehoming, and emphasizes training and re-training the rescued horse through natural horsemanship. Through her rescue organization, Becky has found horses that are not appropriate for riding but still have much to offer people. Using her natural horsemanship training and experience, she became certified with the EAGALA model (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association). “4 Hooves for Hearts” is the only EAGALA facility between Celina and Oklahoma. It offers a unique opportunity to offer services to the community as it is an environment that helps otherwise reluctant clients get on board with mental health. Becky tells me that horses have a natural ability to connect with people. She explains that horses as prey animals, are naturally attuned and intuitive toward those around them and are the “perfect mirror of someone’s feelings”.

Becky explains that a client will meet privately with a licensed therapist in the barn office and then join her and the horse or horses in the arena for ground activities. Their time together will focus on non-verbal communication, assertiveness, creative thinking, teamwork, and more. Each session is tailored to the client and can address substance abuse and dependency, anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many other life-altering situations. Becky recounts “It’s very powerful. The universal thing about all our clients is that when the horse connects with them, they often just open up.” These animals who were rescued and once bound for slaughter are now the ones doing the rescuing, as they help heal the people who connect with them.

I spent most of my time with Becky fighting off tears while she explained that horses can discern honesty and emotion in their people. The trust and partnership that occurs between a licensed therapist, Becky, the client, and a 1200-pound dynamic, powerful horse is almost magical and is changing lives. Becky hopes to expand on the organization’s services by offering therapeutic services to veterans and first responders. Working together with local veteran associations, “4 Hooves for Hearts” has a goal of treating all veterans and first responders who seek help. As stated on their website, “4 Hooves for Hearts” offers a unique opportunity to create life-long changes that effectively address the underlying causes of many problems. Career & Technical Education of Celina ISD Provides A Challenging Academic Program To Develop Future-Ready Students

175,900. That is how many registered nursing jobs the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will be available each year for the next seven years. This shortage of nurses will likely occur in the South more than any other region. Ryan Contreras, Director of Career and Technical Education for Celina Independent School District (ISD) at Celina High School, hopes to get students those jobs. Celina ISD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program is designed to advance students offering real world experience in area of study while providing a rigid academic education resulting in high-wage, high-demand, skilled occupations. When Contreras started at Celina ISD three years ago, he immediately knew he wanted to expand the program and had the support of the administration, teachers, and Collin College. At the time, there were only three areas of studies offered with CTE: AV (audio visual, Agriculture and Welding, and Family Community Service, formerly known as Home Economics). Since Contreras has been at Celina ISD, the courses have more than doubled. Before he could expand, Contreras surveyed Celina students determining the subjects of interest to the students. The biggest request was more computer science courses. Celina started with only one computer science class and now has a full-time teacher instructing several classes at different levels including Advanced Placement Computer Science. At Celina Middle School, Robotics and Engineering was very popular, so this was introduced at the high school. Contreras also created a curriculum for engineering. Celina’s CTE partnered with Project Lead the Way, a national nonprofit organization that develops curriculum focusing on computer science, engineering, and

biomedical science. Numerous engineering classes at both the middle and high schools were developed as a result. Students also expressed a keen interest in law enforcement and public safety. Celina CTE connects with both the Celina Police and Fire Departments for various classes like Principals of Law Enforcement and Emergency Management Training. Students even “shadow” a police officer and experience daily interactions in this program. Perhaps the most significant partnership is the relationship between Celina CTE and Collin College, Celina Campus. As mentioned, the national nursing shortage is an immense problem thus Health Science is “growing leaps and bounds” according to Contreras. By affiliating with Collin College, students can earn three key certifications in Health Science prior to graduating high school. Students can complete the first two years of studies while in high school and the last two years at Collin College. Collin College now offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the Celina Campus. Having Collin College nearby in the same town plus completing college courses in high school greatly benefits students, a huge savings for those who wish to receive a college degree at a fraction of the time and cost. Currently CTE has fourteen programs of study. Contreras hopes to expand CTE’s partnership with Collin College with more construction courses due to a short supply of construction skilled workers. Celina High School will have a full-time teacher next year in this curriculum to help meet the need. Contreras anticipates CTE to continue to grow and make programs even better to help prepare a skilled workforce. He aspires to increase curricula like culinary arts and unmanned aerial vehicles (i.e., drones). In addition, CTE CONTINUED >

plans to host a “Trades Day” with successful professionals from skilled careers illustrating the path on what classes to take and how to get these jobs. Finally, CTE is expanding its courses at Celina Middle School with more classes and career explorations providing high school credit classes. Ryan Contreras is proud of the progress made by Celina’s CTE Program. He is gratified by the support of Celina ISD, the administration, Collin College, and business partners. Contreras has been an educator for over twenty years and confidently states that “Celina is by far the best school district.” He continues that “the community itself is amazing” noting that “anything I need, I ask, and there is somebody that steps up and gives a helping hand. It’s the partnership between organizations like the Celina Chamber of Commerce, community partners, CTE’s advisory committees, and Collin College that help the CTE Program continue to advance. Contreras believes it is the

businesses in Celina that are “100% key to students’ success like no other community.” For example, when expanding the Health Science program, Contreras notes the amount of community businesses that volunteered to help such as local pharmacies, a law firm, plus the fire department proving “how amazing this community is. You don’t find that in other places.” CelinaISD's partnership with the local campus of Collin College furthers the special community atmosphere of Celina. While the city is growing at a rapid pace, it is refreshing to know that Celina ISD has dedicated employees like Ryan Contreras managing the CTE Program preparing students for a successful skilled workforce or to be college-ready. Mom and Dad don't like to overindulge these four but for a special treat, they love bacon, cheese, hotdogs and lunchmeat. Whether they are lounging on the couch or going hunting, these beagles are living their best life in Celina.

She just turned five this summer and when she was younger, she loved to jump but now she prefers to play tug. When she goes to Atomic T-Shirts and Signs with her owner Jim, she loves to lay by the front door and greet guests. Napa loves to be touching someone so she'll often attempt to sit on your feet. RISING STARS AND A FEELING OF FAMILY AT A GYM GROWING LIKE THE CITY IT IS IN How does a former professional fighter from Brooklyn, New York end up in Celina, Texas owning a cheer and tumble gym? When Jay Rock, owner of Rock City Cheer and Tumble, moved to Texas almost thirty years ago, it was to pursue his fighting career. While the road may have been paved with good intentions, sometimes life has other plans. As a former elite gymnast, Jay would often tumble at local Dallas gyms in his spare time to keep up his skills and work

out. It did not take long for people to take notice. Coaches asked Jay for pointers of how to teach their students better, students would ask him to help them improve, and parents would ask for him to give private lessons. He ran clinics at gyms all over Dallas. At one point, Jay had four jobs at multiple gyms, ultimately leading to a head coaching job where he got his start. Jay’s reputation grew, increasing his private lessons with students. He realized most cheer and tumbling gyms lacked proper

techniques and appropriate skill level for athletes. This became a full-time job so he realized he should open his own gym. In 1998, he opened Jay Rock's Gym in Dallas which he operated for over twenty years. During this time he noticed a demand for gyms farther north, so in July 2019 Jay and Kristen Rock opened Rock City Cheer and Tumble in Celina. He found a great building off CR 86 “by the big water tower”. Jay introduced himself to the Celina pee wee cheerleading program and he and Kristen helped coach their camps. People immediately enrolled at Rock City and the students went from 40 children to approximately 150 children in the first five months. Rock City’s growth stalled during the pandemic where Jay had to improvise to “stay afloat” making training videos

and coaching private lessons as the pandemic lessened. In 2021, Rock City literally “rocked” it’s come back with upwards of 600 students including six competitive (All-Star) cheer teams. The comp teams placed in the top three for all local cheer competitions. Last May, Rock City ranked 24th out of 112 teams at All-Star Worlds in Orlando, Florida. Rock City has recently expanded due to its popularity and word of mouth. The expansion includes a second gym of equal space, across from the original building. When asked the advantages of attending Rock City (besides being local), Jay mentions several. First, the learning ratio is approximately 6:1 meaning six students to one coach. Most gyms are double that size. Second, all Rock City team coaches are 23+ years old providing experience and real-world knowledge. Finally, Rock City promotes students on individual skills. Many gyms keep higher level athletes on lower-level teams focusing on winning competitions, instead of advancing their students. Jay believes when you help the student grow, the team will grow and succeed as well. Jay Rock has a passion for his job. “I love what I do,” he says. “It’s all play time for me. I love my staff. We are a big family.” Having a coaching staff with morals and values is very important to Jay. He notes “it’s not the talking, it’s the behavior” when it comes to staffing. In fact, their Mission Statement is to impart “strong character virtues.” With Kristen Rock as the gym manager, and the amazing coaching staff, Jay feels confident that these values will be upheld. Jay Rock loves Celina and has many goals for Rock City Cheer & Tumble as well as his "family" of coaches. He knows a goal without a plan is just a wish, but life’s plans often guide you in the right direction.

Gunnar Griggs- Bell is the first student from Gunter to be a state officer. Only he and my daughter, Victoria, have been awarded their American Degree from the National FFA. *Being the floral team Champions of Area V. My team beat all the big schools and the school that won state. It let me know that students in a small school can accomplish the same as those in the 6A and Ag Tech schools. In FFA we are not divided by size for competitions like athletics. *Having my Jr Ag students win showmanship at our county show. You may not always have control over a judge’s opinion at a contest or the quality of your animal, BUT you have total control over yourself. I make it mandatory for my students to enter showmanship with their rabbits and chickens. It prepares them for speaking to adults, gives them an opportunity to prove what they know about their species and is the gateway for them to move up to larger animals in High School. It also starts teaching them how to promote themselves and be confident in who they are, especially in interviews for their future scholarships or jobs!

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Having a student graduate that survived life, family and odds that most of us will never face. My heart is full of watching a student break the cycle and open the door of opportunity. I have one that graduated this year and will be attending a local college with the goal of being a nurse. Seeing students as unpolished gems is part of who I am as a teacher. There is so much more to being a teacher than academics. Being a former women’s minister has given me the ability to see kids differently in my classes. My students will tell you that I can be their

biggest advocate and cheerleader. I do shoot straight and have high expectations, but with that, I give a ton of grace. The only reason I go to work every morning is to see my students.

Bobcat Field Complex Preserved As Part Of Planned Linear Park

The City of Celina and the Celina Independent School District announced an agreement to preserve much of the complex at the historic Bobcat Field near Downtown Celina. Members of the Ousley family, who generously donated the land to the school district in 1950, provided overwhelming support for the plan which will repurpose the stadium as an amphitheater as a part of a large linear park to be developed along Doe Branch Creek. Of the existing buildings that stand behind the stadium, one is currently being redeveloped as a community center for Celina senior citizens. Specific plans for remaining structures and bleachers are still under consideration. Varsity football games were played there from 1952-2018. “The City wanted that stadium to stand as a living monument to Celina’s past, while allowing Celina’s present and our future residents to memorialize some of our earliest and greatest days we shared as a city,” said Celina City Manager Jason Laumer. “I am forever grateful that Dr. Maglisceau’s team and the Ousley family allowed us to enshrine a good portion of the entire complex as the crown of the new linear park that is being developed in the beautiful surrounding area.” “Few stadiums embody so much of a community’s roots as our beloved historic Bobcat Field,” said Celina ISD Superintendent Dr. Tom Maglisceau. “I am overjoyed with the vison and partnership of our city leaders and their willingness to work with the district and the Ousley family

to memorialize the moments and memories made in that sacred stadium.” “Over the years, that stadium hosted great games and even greater memories,” said retired Celina Head Football Coach G.A. Moore, who coached two stints there between 1972 and 2002. “Most importantly, that stadium is a place where young men and women learned to develop real life lessons and leadership through hard-fought wins, heart-breaking losses, championships, and state records that followed. I am thrilled that parts of those hallowed grounds will be preserved, and I hope people not only see it as a place where games were played, but they also see it as a place where the values and traditions of this community were celebrated and cemented.” “Maxine Ousley, who was born here in 1915 and called Celina home for most of her life, wanted the people of Celina to have a public place to gather and celebrate life and the culture that makes our community so special,” the Ousley family said in a statement. “Maxine originally donated property in 1950 for a park, but it quickly became Bobcat Field for Celina ISD. The Ousley family, working in conjunction with the City of Celina and Celina ISD, recognize the importance of this land and how it has impacted Celina. We are grateful for the opportunity to memorialize Maxine Ousley's dream of a city park with special appreciation to Celina football, the Ousley family, and the other families who are an important part of Celina's history.

Music CDs – Music is the universal language. You'll find a large selection of pop, rock, and country music CDs at the library. Computer software & games – If your kids are into video games, the library has an array of children’s educational software and video games. Wendy Osburn Wendy Osburn welcomed us to her beautiful home and garden in North Preston Lakes for the article Deeply Rooted on page 36. We were greeted with a freshly made Blackberry Margarita, created with ingredients taken from her garden. Wendy and her husband, Kelly, have lived in Celina for 16 years. They are parents to daughter Victoria, a territorial manager for Goose Head insurance, son Luke, a graduate of the Citadel and an Air Force pilot stationed in Tampa, and son Jake, a junior at TAMU studying International Studies. Wendy is the Agriculture Advisor for Gunter ISD. She teaches Horticulture, Landscape Design and Turf Management, Floral, & Advanced Floral. Her other duties include overseeing the rabbits and chickens, coaching the Floral Team and managing the Tiger Floral Classroom Shop. Wendy shares with us her famous Blackberry Margarita Recipe:

B L A C K B E R R Y M A R G A R I TA INGREDIENTS • 2 parts Tequila • 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice • 1 part simple syrup • 1 handful of fresh blackberries • 1 sprig of fresh mint • lime slice and blackberries for garnish

DIRECTIONS 1. In a cocktail shaker, add fresh blackberries and a sprig of mint with the simple syrup and then muddle until the blackberries and mint are well-pulverized in the syrup. 2. Add in the tequila, lime juice, and a handful of ice. Place the top on the shaker. 3. Shake well. 4. Strain and serve with blackberries and lime for garnish.
