LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Fresh Start

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Barbara Ireland | Barbara.Ireland@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

Danielle Poche | Danielle.Poche@lifestylepubs.com

"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." ~ Seneca It's a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to just be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been and where we are headed. My 2022 will be full of beginnings and ends. With kicking off Celina Lifestyle and also having my oldest graduate high school this Spring, I am feeling the pulls of life. I know I need to gently remind myself to cherish each day this year, take care of myself and my family, and enjoy the journey. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness, and self-care. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit will be our focus. Our "Local Experiences" this month have us focusing on wellness with our top choices for spa treatments and healthy boosts all found right here in our community. Enjoy a "Mocktail Party" with a few friends as you wind down from the rush and indulgence of the holiday season. Ryan Merchant, financial advisor with Edward Jones, shares monetary strategies to help keep you financially healthy in 2022. While Oleta Schranz of Preston Family Healthcare gives us her top picks to keep us physically healthy in the new year. Endeavor to embrace all the moments, whether beginnings or ends. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health, and love. Thank you for reading and as always, we'll see you around town! Happy 2022!

Rosemary Grapefruit Spritzer INGREDIENTS • 1 cup fresh rosemary • 1 cup water • 1 cup sweetener

• 120 ml freshly squeezed grapefruit juice • 2 cups sparkling water

DIRECTIONS Add rosemary, water and sweetener to a small saucepan. Stir to dissolve sweetener. Leave on a very light boil (barely bubbling) for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, cover, and let steep for 30 mins. Set aside to cool. Add 1/4 cup of squeezed grapefruit juice and 1/8 cup of rosemary syrup to an ice-filled glass. Top with sparkling water. Garnish and serve

Lemon Lime Mocktail INGREDIENTS • 1 whole lime • 1 whole lemon • handful of fresh mint • 2 8oz cups

• •

2 cups of water 3 tsp honey or agave nectar (1 1/2 tsp per cup)

Lemon & Lime Mocktail

DIRECTIONS Fill two 8oz glasses with crushed ice and add 1 1/2 tsp of honey or agave nectar. Cut your lemon and limes in half. Use the juice of half the lemon and half the lime in each glass. (This is tart, so if you are not a fan, you may want to cut this portion to meet your needs). Once you have added your lemon and lime juice, add in your fresh mint and a couple of lemon and lime slices. Once you have your lemon and lime juices, add in fresh or sparkling water to fill the rest of the glass. Use a spoon and stir the mocktail until the honey or nectar is combined

Orange Moscow Mule INGREDIENTS • juice of one whole orange • 1 cup of ice

• 6.8 oz bottle ginger beer • fresh mint leaves for garnish

DIRECTIONS Slice the orange in quarters, cut two slices and set aside for garnish. Juice the remaining half of the orange and place in copper mug (or any glass). Fill the glass to the top with ice. Add the ginger beer and garnish with orange slices and mint leaves.

PLAY DOWNTOWN! EXPLORE WAYS IN DOWNTOWN CELINA TO STAY ACTIVE Do you like to be outdoors and enjoy outdoor fitness activities? Are you looking for a way to get some exercise without leaving your hometown? Look no further than downtown Celina. That’s right. Downtown Celina is known for the historic city square with numerous shops and restaurants, but it is also home to many fitness opportunities and outdoor activities. Here are just a few of them:

1. Pickleball Courts at Founders Station Park One of the fastest growing sports in the country is Pickleball. According to the USA Pickleball Association, Pickleball is a sport for all ages that combines “elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.” Celina has four courts currently at Founders Station Park on Louisiana Street. Don’t worry if you have never played. Every Tuesday at 7:00pm, beginner lessons are available at no cost with paddles and balls available. All ages are welcome in Pickleball too. For more information, visit Sports.Celina-TX.gov or via the Celina Pickleball page on Facebook.

2. Baseball Parks and Multi-Purpose Sports Fields at OCP You can’t drive by OCP without noticing the baseball and softball fields, especially the newly expanded section of the park. The fields are primarily for youth sports, but it also hosts adult co-ed softball leagues in the summer. Currently, OCP just opened its new expansion adding two more baseball and softball fields (each) to the existing 4-plex fields. The four new fields have synthetic grass and infields allowing for more year-round play. Information about the youth or adult baseball and softball leagues can be found at Sports.Celina-TX.gov/adultsports The Multi-Purpose Sports Fields are commonly used for soccer and flag-football games. Like the baseball and softball fields, this area is also mostly used for youth sports, but the City’s Parks and Recreation Department notes that the fields can also be used for a potential adult flag football league. If there is enough interest, the city will start up a league. For both the baseball/softball fields and the multi-purpose sports fields, reservations are required by submitting a reservation form to the Parks and Recreation Department.

3. Greens at Little Wooden Penguin If golf is your game, then don’t forget about The Greens at the Little Wooden Penguin, home to an 18-hole putting course. Up to four people can play for the small fee of $7 per person. Fun for the whole family, here you can work on your short game as you putt around a few holes of golf. You can also enjoy the entire experience of Little Wooden Penguin – food, fun, yard games, a succulent bar, live music, and more!

4. Basketball Courts at Founders Station Park and Preston Streams Park Celina has two parks which host outdoor basketball courts: Founders Station Park on Louisiana Street and Preston Streams Park. Here you can shoot some hoops or play a pick-up game of basketball with your buddies.

5. Traditions Park and Bobcat Trail The Celina City Council adopted The Trails Master Plan in March 2019. As stated in the plan, The Trails Master Plan is “a guide for the future development of trails, bikeways and trail amenities in Celina”. Celina also created a plan for parks. In February 2020, the Celina City Council adopted The Master Park Plan. The adopted plan was created with feedback from Celina residents as well members of the Celina Parks and Recreation Board. Both the Trail Plan and the Parks Plans are available on the City of Celina’s website Celina-TX. gov/1329/Parks-Master-Plan. One notable long-term proposed goal in the Master Park Plan is the vision for improvements to Preston Streams Park encompassing the proposed Bobcat Trail with the intention of incorporating the original Bobcat Stadium.

Financial Health In The New Year RYAN MERCHANT SHARES TOP FINANCIAL TIPS FOR 2022

ARTICLE BY SHARLA DAVENPORT PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOLLY FARROW

24

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

RYAN MERCHANT, AAMS FINANCIAL ADVISOR FOR EDWARD JONES INVESTMENTS

January is often synonymous with making healthy choices like dieting or exercising. But what about your finances? Do know how to make “healthy” financial decisions? Ryan Merchant, AAMS Financial Advisor for Edward Jones Investments in Celina, shares some tips for good financial health. First, this is the perfect time to talk to your financial advisor. If any of your goals/circumstances have changed, “this could make a difference to your overall financial strategy so you can live today and save for tomorrow.” He says, “It's a good idea to start the year by taking stock of your financial situation including five basic steps:

4. Maximize your impact. If you plan to make charitable contributions in the coming year, speak with a financial advisor and your tax professional to see if there are ways to contribute that may minimize your personal tax liability. 5. Build up your emergency fund. Your monthly budget should consider the fact that there are infrequent, yet predictable expenses you'll need on occasion. Weddings, vacations, car repairs and health scares never occur regularly, but you prepare for these events by setting aside small amounts of money each month to better prepare yourself when life happens.

1. Conduct a thorough review of your personal situation and financial documents. Have your goals or risk tolerance changed? Are your beneficiaries up to date? Is your family protected if markets tumble or an emergency arises? 2. Give your portfolio a checkup. Have a well-balanced portfolio with various types of investments for different market conditions. Market fluctuations can cause portfolios to drift from intended asset allocation; it may be time to rebalance. 3. Make progress on your retirement savings. Consider maxing out on contributions to your retirement plan, IRA, and health savings account (HSA).

Don’t have a financial advisor? Merchant suggests you pick someone who “has your best interest at heart”. Ask questions about services, fees, plus experience. This will have a “positive impact on your financial well-being. Life’s about living, and achieving financial goals on your terms lets you do that.” To learn more, call Ryan P. Merchant-Edward Jones Investments at 469.813.0001

A L E X I S A N D R E Z A A N VA R I A N MAKE FITNESS A PRIORITY AND OPEN THEIR HOME GYM TO US

The Anvarians make it a priority to stay active daily.

Supporting each other in and out of the gym, Reza and Alexis Anvarian are building a life for their family centered on fitness and wellness. They offer strength and support not only to the clients of their personal training business but also to their three young children, Kyren (7), Kain (5) and Kaymen (3). Reza owns and coaches boxing at Sanctum Fight Club in Prosper as well as coaches his kids' sport teams. At his boxing gym, he trains the DFW Guns and Hoses Heavyweight Champion, as he himself was two-time Golden Gloves Champion before he turned pro. With his history as part of the Naval special warfare command for 6 years, he has a passion for helping others with military enlistment. He is a strong family man and proudly boasts of coaching Kyren's 1st grade undefeated flag-football team to becoming Super Bowl Champions. When asking the Anvarians what role fitness plays in their lives, they answer in unison, "It's who we are." Alexis tells of how she found out she was pregnant with her first-born while competing with Reza in an Ironman triathlon. She continued to stay fit and work out focusing on sound nutrition and healthy habits during all 3 of her pregnancies. She says fitness is her "emotional support system". Alexis is a very successful youth fitness specialist and personal trainer. Tucked away in a Celina neighborhood, their home gym hosts friends and clients of all ages and levels of fitness. They offer accountability and support in a comfortable, wellequipped environment. Behind their home, they have built an obstacle course for their children. All five Anvarians make it a priority to stay active daily. Their newest venture is the opening of a Southpaws Grill in Prosper. It is a fast, casual, healthy eatery serving grilled items such as rice, quinoa, and sweet potato bowls, as well as salads and sandwiches. Southpaws will open in Spring of 2022. CONTINUED >
