In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with those that you love and encouraging giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us and who have come before us, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community that has given all of us so much. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who continually support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. Shain Hunn is the Director of Organizational Leadership, he oversees the “Life Connected” Program and most importantly, he has taken on his latest role as a newlywed. We caught up with him and his wife Marquin over coffee in the courtyard of Annie Jack. YOUR HISTORY WITH CELINA RUNS DEEP, HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? I have lived in Celina since 1970, my family goes back three generations! My father graduated from Celina in 1947. TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE WITH THE CITY. My role in Celina initially began as the Assistant Fire Chief where I worked for five years. During my time in the fire department, I was asked to provide leadership training for city staff. Jason Laumer, our City Manager, knew I had a passion for leadership, more specifically “Servant Leadership” and asked if I could provide the training. After several discussions, it was decided that I would begin with our City Core Values: Excellence, Community, Integrity and Service and follow with an in-depth study of the “Servant Leadership” model. The training was well-received by City employees and momentum began as this continued for well over a year. The moment came when I was approached about focusing all my efforts towards leadership training and I accepted the position of Director of Organizational Leadership. My role is focused on employee development with an emphasis on leadership. The training is provided for all city employees giving each one the opportunity to learn best practices resulting in employee retention, great customer service and ethical leadership. Classes are held for upper management, emerging leaders as well as a formal leadership Academy requiring nine months of participation ending with a group project. In addition, I oversee the City’s “Life Connected” program which focuses on employee engagement, volunteerism and connecting with HOA’s providing helpful information in various workshops. We have had great success with the “Life Connected” program, the program manager,

Jade Mizzell, does a tremendous job and is such a servant leader for our wonderful community. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WOULD TELL A NEW RESIDENT ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY? Plain and Simple – you have just moved to the greatest community in the world! Celina has always been a special place and that is due to the people that call Celina home. The people of Celina, past and present, embrace a culture that is friendly and inviting to all they encounter. YOU’VE HAD AN EXCITING YEAR, UPDATE US ON YOUR PERSONAL LIFE. Wow, what a year this has been! Aside from my busy work life, my personal life recently took a turn and that would be a turn in the right direction! About a year and a half ago I reconnected with my high school girlfriend and we were married July 16th at our favorite place to be, the Ft. Worth Stockyards! My wife’s name is Marquin and she too spent her younger years attending school and playing sports in Celina. Marquin’s father was the football and track coach while her mother was an English teacher. Back then, Marquin and I were more friends than anything else and I have recently learned just how important that is in a relationship. Marquin is truly my best friend, I adore her, the relationship, and the love we share. If you haven’t met Marquin, you have missed out. She is by far the better half when it comes to us as a couple. You know… sometimes people don’t know what great looks like until they find it. THIS MONTH’S ISSUE IS ABOUT GIVING THANKS. WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR? Travel To Broken Bow A Favorite Getaway For Texans

Would you believe that less than 170 miles away from Celina, you can escape to a place with towering pines, rolling streams and a pristine lake surrounded by a lush, tree-covered shoreline? This gem was once hidden but lately, Broken Bow, Oklahoma has become a favorite getaway for Texans. Local Celina couple, Kelly and Gavin George, fell in love with Broken Bow and they are now the owners of three beautiful rental cabins. Kelly shares with us what led them to make Broken Bow their second home and a place to invest in their dreams. When asked what made them choose Broken Bow, Kelly tells us “to be honest with you we didn’t 'choose' Broken Bow, Broken Bow chose us. During Covid, our neighbor at the time asked us if we wanted to go to their cabin in Broken Bow. The drive up there was amazing and when we got into the town, we immediately fell in love. The greenery reminded us of Tennessee, where we previously lived. It also reminded us of a small town in California called Big Bear. It was at this moment we knew this was our “happy place". Gavin and I felt at home and were able to disconnect and unwind, yet still have fabulous escapes and restaurants if we wanted to leave the cabin. It’s also the best place to chill out and grill out on the back decks that overlook the 80-foot pine trees. This was the moment we knew we wanted to build and design a cabin. While we can’t yet be up there full-time, we want to offer other families the same peace and adventure that we have there.” Kelly adds that with every reservation, they like to give back. They have humbly raised over $25,000 for Christian charities that help children succeed. The Georges' believe that when "God blesses them, they bless others."

Melissa chose the foundation as the recipient of the inaugural Run Celina 5K, a dash starting and ending at Old Celina Park in the heart of Celina on January 14, 2023. Participants can choose between a 5K option or a 1K Fun Run for kids.

300 participants will race the 5K while up to 100 children get to experience a nice introduction to running as they travel through the park, into the Parkside neighborhood, and back into the park near the new ball fields and onto the west side of Old Celina Park. As a competitive runner, Melissa desired to bring that race experience north to Celina. And the response is encouraging. Runners love the opportunity to train on new courses, in new towns. Sponsors, too, are excited to join in the fun. More than 20 businesses have joined in to sponsor the Run Celina 5K/Fun Run 1K. Melissa’s goal is to create not just one-event runners and one-time sponsors, but to have partners for life in each. Local business, Swirls Bakery, will add special touches to race day with Swirls Cinnamon rolls and a Swirls Blend Coffee by Celina Coffee Roasters once runners cross the finish line. The medal reveal of races is an exciting day and Run Celina will release the design in November featuring the Celina countryside and iconic water tower. Runners and non-runners alike can join the Celina 5K by supporting a new initiative with the Celina Police Department. Partnering with Chief Cullison to promote a “sponsor an officer” program, Run Celina will highlight law enforcement officers along the racecourse. Community members can purchase a sign featuring one of the 43 Celina Police department officers with sponsor tiers ranging from $50-$500. The idea is to familiarize the community with those men and women who work hard to partner with the community to reduce crime, promote traffic safety, and strive to protect and serve Celina. Isn’t it exciting to uncover a piece of history, especially with a unique story behind it? That’s what happened to Coryann Johnson, owner of Texas Homes and Land Real Estate, earlier this summer in downtown Celina. First, flashback to 1976 when America celebrated its Bicentennial. Celina was also celebrating its establishment as a settlement in 1876, thereby making 1976 Celina’s Centennial (source: City of Celina). Patriotism was high with celebratory memorabilia everywhere. Forty-six years later, Celina is booming with many new buildings and a faint memory of 1976. That is, until Coryann Johnson bought a building downtown for her real estate business. CONTINUED >

When Coryann searched for an office, she knew she wanted something on The Square. She had many childhood memories here like eating at the Bobcat Café (now a BBQ restaurant) or “hanging out on The Square” with her Celina cousins and her future husband, Jeff. She also remembers time spent at the Cotton Gin once owned by her grandfather. As a result, she purchased the old Stone Building (Dan Stone Insurance) on the northeast corner downtown and immediately began renovation. One day, her brother, Clay Thomas, was working in the attic and discovered a patriotic mural painted on the wall from 1976. It included the words “Cheerleaders ‘76” and a list of names: Barbara Glendenning, Kim Peterman, Brenda Vest, Lynnette Vest, Laurie Huddleston, and Valerie Morris. Coryann knew they had uncovered a piece of Celina history. She remembered everyone’s names on the mural and reached out to some of them asking about the painting. It was determined the cheerleaders were from Celina High School (CHS) many from the Class of 1977. Coryann talked to Barbara Glendenning from the painting who then contacted her classmates. Glendenning and Kim Peterman recalled how the mural originated.

Glendenning noted the cheerleaders would paint local business windows for Friday football games (now a Homecoming tradition). Because of this, the Celina Masonic Lodge asked the cheerleaders to paint a mural honoring the historic anniversaries of 1976. Glendenning said, “The Lodge paid for the paint and Kim did most of the drawing. The art was inspired by a book about Celina authored by Barbara Johnson.” Glendenning remembers that some cheerleaders helped draw, but everyone painted based on the book cover art. She reminisces the mural represented “the spirit of the country and the spirit of Celina at that time.” Glendenning guarantees she and her classmates will discuss the mural at their forty-fifth high school reunion. Coryann Johnson wanted to keep the mural, but the building needed too many structural improvements. There was “no way to keep it,” she stated. “I have talked to about half of the ladies on the mural and heard their stories. We took pictures and will display them in the office,” she continued. Coryann has fond memories of Celina and was thrilled to find a piece of the town’s history. She expects to open her new office in early 2023 and hopes people will stop and say hello. Friends Zachary Reece and Frank Saldivar took an unconventional route to start their company, Exclusive Pool & Patio. After moving to the DFW area as specialists in the elevator construction and installation business, they quickly realized that they wanted to own their own business and work for themselves. In 2016, both had settled in the Light Farms Area and started looking around at what their neighbors were installing. They found construction has many of the same disciplines regardless of whether you are building and installing an elevator or a pool and patio. THE LEGACY BEHIND THE NAME: JERRY & LINDA MOORE Celina Independent School District (CISD) opened its new middle school for the 202223 school year. It is a beautifully open, airy campus across highway 289 from Celina High School. Looking out the second-story floor-to-ceiling windows of the library, you can see across fields, train tracks and up to the high school. It is a striking mix of old and new. In something so shiny and new, full of all the latest technology and learning environments, how will the history and tradition of Celina schools be kept alive? It starts with a very deliberate process of naming the campus. After many nominations of worthy candidates, the new middle school is named after Linda and Jerry Moore, Moore Middle School. These two and their family are staples of the community and the school district they have served for 51 years and counting. Jerry

graduated from High School in Celina’s Class of 1963. After a tour in Vietnam, and several years in college, Jerry joined the staff of Celina Middle School in 1971 to teach history and coach middle school athletics. He became the principal of the middle school in 1973 where he served for 35 years. After the birth of their second child, Linda joined the school district as a teacher in 1978 and taught for 29 years until she retired in 2006. Jerry was not finished when he stepped down from Middle School Principal. In 2010 at the request of the Superintendent and CISD School Board, he launched the new CISD Transportation Department that he shepherded for 10 years. Realizing that he wanted to slow down but didn’t want to stop working, he moved to bus driver in 2020 and still drives today.

I asked him how he felt when he first dropped off a busload of kids at the very school named after him. He shared that at first it just seemed like a normal first day of school. Then it struck him just how much of an honor it is and he still finds it hard to comprehend. Maintaining Bobcat spirit, tradition, and history is important to the Moores. They recently attended the first middle school pep rally where Jerry was the guest speaker. Jerry shared with the kids how proud he is to be from Celina and he never wanted to work anywhere else. Linda loves that the students at the pep rally still use the same school song and Good Luck cheer at the end. Even something so Jerry and Linda Moore

small feels so good. This connection to the history and traditions of the community is an important value that Linda and Jerry share. They are happy to partner with current school Principal Jamey Briscoe to keep Celina history alive. Moore Middle School started the year with Bobcat Bootcamp, a one-day program that looks at the past, present, and future of Celina. Students spent a half day on the Square meeting community leaders, touring the Celina Museum, and learning how the Square used to look and the vision for its future. The second part of the day familiarized students with the new campus and the Moore Enrichment System. This system is an innovative way of dividing 900 kids into small groups, called “houses”, to build better connections in the school and with the community. These houses will compete against each other for prizes and do regular service projects with adopted community organizations. At the end of our conversation, Linda shares the Moore's vision for Moore Middle School. They desire it to be “a safe place for kids to learn, follow their interests, and grow." They hope the children will enjoy coming to school and develop close friendships. After serving the CISD community for half a century, the Moores leave a legacy to inspire students to do just that.

Friendsgiving can be celebrated any day, any time of year, but most gatherings take place in November, particularly the weekend before Thanksgiving.” Friendsgiving is a blend of friend and Thanksgiving, and it refers to a large meal eaten with friends either on or near Thanksgiving. In recent years, geography and/or mounting travel prices, have made many people choose to celebrate traditional holidays in non-traditional ways, hence the growing popularity of Friendsgiving. There are no strict guidelines for this holiday which makes it a laid back, often less stressful version of the more formal Thanksgiving. Friendsgiving can be celebrated any day, any time of year, but most gatherings take place in November, particularly the weekend before Thanksgiving. Many hosts choose potluck for their Friendsgiving celebrations so everyone can simply relax and enjoy. We share with you a few recipes that would be the perfect addition to your Friendsgiving meal. Whether you spend this holiday with friends, family, or friends who are family, we wish you a blessed one SLOW-COOKER LOADED MASHED POTATOES • 3 pounds cubed peeled potatoes (about 9 medium) • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened • 1 cup sour cream • 1/2 cup butter, cubed • 1/4 cup 2% milk • 1/2 pound bacon strips, cooked and crumbled • 1-1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese • 1-1/2 cups shredded pepper jack cheese • 4 green onions, thinly sliced • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Place potatoes in a Dutch oven, adding water to cover. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until tender, 10-15 minutes. Drain; return to pan. Mash with cream cheese, sour cream, butter and milk. Stir in bacon, cheeses, onions and seasonings. Cover; refrigerate overnight. Transfer to a greased 3- or 4-quart slow cooker. Cook, covered, on low 3 to 3-1/2 hours.

APPLE BLONDIE • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, (142 g) • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled (1 stick or 113 g) • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed (200 g) • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 large egg, room temperature • 2 apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch square 1. 2. 3.

Preheat the oven to 350° F. Line an 8-inch by 8-inch pan with parchment paper and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter and brown sugar until well combined, about 2 minutes. Add egg and vanilla and mix until incorporated. Add the flour mixture and stir just until combined (careful not to overmix). Fold in chopped apples. Transfer batter to prepared baking pan (the batter will be a little thick). Bake for 25 to 28 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool and cut into squares and serve.

Fill a shaker with ice. Pour vanilla-flavored vodka, Irish cream liqueur, and pumpkin-flavored liqueur over ice. Cover and shake until the outside of the shaker has frosted. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg.

CELINA CELEBRATES ITS HISTORY AND COWBOY CULTURE AT INAUGURAL FEST

Down on the Historic Downtown Square in early autumn, Celina residents celebrated their history and cowboy culture at the inaugural Heritage Festival. This family-friendly event was conceived and hosted by the city and Celina Public Library as a reminder to residents new and old of Celina's rich heritage and traditions. The Festival included food and art vendors with a western flair and carnival games reminiscent of the days of old. A Cowboy Poetry Contest with finalists reading their submissions on stage was enjoyed by festival-goers. The crowd had the opportunity to visit the Celina Area Heritage Association Museum on the square and see the quilt exhibit on display. The local museum "provides a sense of place and community by celebrating a collective heritage and offering a great way to get to know the history of the Celina area!" With calf-roping lessons, Celina's own cowboy Punk Carter, and a historic western atmosphere, Heritage Festival was a sweet reminder of Celina's roots.
