Traveling is so much fun! I’ve been blessed to visit the Caribbean Islands and the Pacific many times. The allure of white sandy beaches and turquoise waters seems to call my name. Aruba, St. Thomas, St. Marteen, Jamaica, Cayman, Turks & Caicos, Cozumel, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Hawaii, and many more.
Beach luaus, surfers, sunsets, waterfalls, and whale watching are all glorious moments in time to appreciate while in the Hawaiian Islands. Especially the whales breaching! It’s incredible! Closer to home, in the Caribbean, Grand Cayman has my heart! It is clean, modernized, and offers a diverse and unique selection of dining experiences.
In May, I snorkeled with turtles, held wild stingrays in the ocean like they were household pets, all while jumping off a 60-foot Catamaran onto a sandbar and standing in 4-feet of water in the middle of the Caribbean. I picked up so many live colorful starfish in the beachfront waters at Starfish Point, and fed the tarpon from the local waterfront restaurant called The Wharf. All absolutely amazing experiences!
July is the most traveled time in the USA, because we have such spectacular outdoor parks, lakes, hills, mountains, and beaches all across our beautiful country. You can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, surfing, sailing, fishing, kayaking, river rafting, paddleboarding, whale watching, waterfalls, hiking, wildlife, hang gliding, parachuting, hot air balloons, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping, water skiing, golf, amusement parks, while finding time to enjoy so many diverse dining experiences.

You may have spotted Christen Killebrew making waves at community festivals, children’s charities, or educational programs throughout the area. But chances are, you knew her by the name of “Mermaid Pearl.”
Killebrew’s journey into mermaiding began in 2021 while searching for a restorative form of exercise. It was underwater fitness that both made her joints feel better and gave her a sense of empowerment. Soon, that grew into something bigger.
“The real ‘a-ha’ moment came when I realized Mermaid Pearl could become more than just a character. She could be a way to inspire confidence, encourage environmental awareness, teach water safety, and help people reconnect with nature and imagination in a meaningful way,” says Killebrew.
Family and conservation are at the heart of everything she does. And because safety is key to her mission, she has pursued certifications through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors and received Emergency First Responder training.
“The most fulfilling part of starting this business has been realizing that something rooted in wellness, creativity, and conservation could have such a positive impact on others,” says Killebrew. “What started as a personal journey into low-impact fitness and mental wellness turned into an opportunity for community connection.”
Along the way, she has treasured opportunities to partner with organizations like the Brooklynn Miller Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting children fighting cancer. She also loves participating in conservation-focused events, where she teaches about the importance of protecting our wildlife and waterways.
For Killebrew, nothing compares to watching children light up with excitement while learning how they can look after the world around them. She encourages everyone to understand that even small acts of kindness toward nature make a difference.
“At the end of the day, whether I’m wearing a mermaid tail or not, my biggest goal is to leave people—and the environment around me—a little happier, more inspired, and more cared for than before,” says Killebrew.

For years, Texas wine carried a reputation as more of a novelty than a destination. Outside of Fredericksburg and a handful of tasting rooms scattered throughout the Hill Country, many consumers associated Texas wineries with sweet wines, small local crowds, and weekend bachelorette trips.
Over the last twenty years, however, the industry has quietly undergone a transformation.
Today, Texas ranks as the fifth-largest wine-producing state in the country, with eight established American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) stretching from the Hill Country to the High Plains. More importantly, wineries throughout the state have significantly elevated both the quality of their wines and the overall visitor experience.
Modern Texas wineries now look far different than the tasting rooms many people remember from the
early 2000s. Across the state, owners have invested heavily in architecture, private event space, and elevated tasting experiences designed to attract travelers looking for more than simply a quick wine flight.
And increasingly, those travelers are coming.
Fredericksburg has become one of the country’s fastest-growing wine tourism destinations, with luxury hotels, curated wine trails, and upscale tasting rooms reshaping the perception of Texas wine country.
At the same time, the wine itself continues to improve.
While many wineries remain dependent on grapes grown in the Texas High Plains AVA near Lubbock—which still accounts for the majority of Texas grape production due to its elevation, climate, and dramatic day-to-night temperature swings—wineries are becoming less reliant on imported California fruit than they once were.

Instead, producers are leaning into varietals that thrive naturally in Texas conditions.
Grapes like Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Roussanne, Viognier, and Tannat have proven successful in Texas soils and heat, allowing wineries to produce wines that feel less like attempts to imitate Napa Valley and more like authentic expressions of Texas terroir.
Estate-grown wines are becoming more prominent as well, especially among smaller wineries looking to establish distinct identities and showcase regional character.
For travelers looking to explore the evolving Texas wine scene, there is no shortage of hidden gems, not only in Fredericksburg, but throughout the state. Here are five wineries worth adding to your list:

Thinking of putting up a bird feeder? You’re not alone. Backyard birding is the second most popular hobby in the U.S.—right behind gardening. Bob Gors of Wild Birds Unlimited in Macomb, MI, shares expert tips to help you get started—and get results.
START WITH THE RIGHT SETUP
If you’re new to bird feeding, don’t overcomplicate it. Bob recommends starting with a tray feeder, either pole-mounted or hung. “It’s accessible to the widest range of birds,” he says, “and it lets you experiment with different seed blends.”
Before setting up, take a look at your yard. Birds prefer to feed near trees or shrubs where they can perch and scan for predators. “If your yard is wide open, it’s going to be harder to attract them,” Bob notes.
Quick Tip: Place your feeder about 15 feet from trees or shrubs to give birds a safe place to wait their turn.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SEED—AND SKIP THE FILLERS
Not all bird seed is created equal. Bob advises avoiding blends with fillers like milo, wheat, or oats. “Those are agricultural leftovers. Most birds won’t eat them.”

Quick Tip: Choose fresh, unscented, unflavored seed. Birds don’t need additives—just what they’d eat in nature. Check the ingredients on the bag: sunflower should be the first ingredient—since it’s the seed most birds love.
KEEP UNWANTED GUESTS AWAY
Squirrels causing trouble? Try safflower seed. “It tastes bitter to squirrels but attracts cardinals, grosbeaks, titmice, nuthatches and chickadees,” Bob says. Hot pepper blends also work— birds can’t taste the heat, but mammals can.
To deter large birds like starlings, Bob recommends using a cage around tube feeders to limit access. Tube feeders with small perches help discourage bigger birds. For tidier feeding, seed cylinders—compressed seed—are a great low-mess option.
Quick Tip: “Start simple,” Bob advises. “Watch what’s happening in your yard, then adjust as needed.” Unlike loose seed, cylinders make the birds work harder—and give you longer-lasting views of the birds.

Bob says many customers started birding during the pandemic—and never stopped. “They looked out the window and realized something was there,” he says. It’s remained part of their lives: one couple told Bob they still start every morning on the porch with coffee and birdsong. “It became a ritual that many people now cherish,” Bob says.

From an early age, Adam Marsh knew what he wanted to do: serve and protect. That’s why he spent several years as a police officer in Austin and as a Human Intelligence Collector in the US Army.
Military injuries ultimately changed the course of his life. When he stepped away from the career he loved, he found himself searching for direction. It led him to pursue a Master’s degree at Baylor University, where he continued asking how he could improve both his life and his family’s future.
The answer came in 2024 when he purchased Amazing Ice Designs, a longtime profitable company with

strong relationships across a diverse customer base. Since taking ownership, Marsh has wasted no time building momentum, finding genuine fulfillment in making events more memorable.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of this industry is when we get to learn the story and vision of the event through the client’s eyes,” says Marsh. “This is an opportunity for us to leave a lasting impression, so we always strive to get it right.”
That commitment has brought Amazing Ice Designs to some impressive stages. They recently covered the Aston Martin Valhalla supercar world premiere, as well as events for F1 and the World Endurance Championship. Their artistry has also played a role in creating custom-branded ice cubes for a restaurant that earned a Michelin star, and honoring William Chris Vineyards in being named the only Texas winery among the top 50 in the world.
A particular project that stands out to him was a Harry Potter-themed house party, featuring a Sorting Hat shot luge.
“While I was assembling the sculpture, the client grew increasingly excited. Once it was done, she gave me a huge hug and said this was going to be their best party ever,” says Marsh. “I remember getting back into our delivery van and taking a minute to realize how happy we had made a person who was already doing her best to entertain her guests.”

Cadillac Ranch
Roadside attractions don’t get much more interesting than Cadillac Ranch. Created in 1974 by the art group Ant Farm, this installation features ten vintage Cadillacs half-buried nose-down. The idea actually grew from a local millionaire named Stanley Marsh III’s desire for a baffling piece of public art. The man himself encouraged the cars’ deconstruction, and over the years, visitors have transformed them into ever-changing canvases. They layer spray paint messages and designs in a bold proclamation that “I was here.”

If dramatic landscapes are calling your name, Guadalupe Mountains National Park delivers in a big way. Home to Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas at 8,751 feet above sea level, this striking national park has long since been preserved as an area possessing outstanding geological values. Out in the desert, Prada Marfa turns the ordinary into something unforgettable. Designed to resemble a luxury boutique planted in the middle of nowhere, Prada Marfa has become one of the state’s most photographed landmarks. Created by Scandinavian duo Elmgreen & Dragset in 2005, the structure was never meant to function as a real store but instead serves as a thought-provoking “pop architectural land art project.” It’s a tourist destination you shouldn’t simply drive by.

Leander Liberty Fest at Devine Lake Park

Celebrate Independence Day with Leander’s largest annual event. A wonderful fireworks display starts at 9:30 PM, but you can have a great time listening to live music beforehand. Kids Zone wristbands for a variety of entertaining activities cost $10 and can be purchased at the City of Leander information booth.
