Mo t i va t i o n i n Mo t i o n DISCOVER HOW JAZZERCISE ATX IS FOR EVERYBODY AND EVERY BODY

ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW CHAMBERS

G E T ACT IV E | FI TNES S

When you hear the word “Jazzercise,” leotards and legwarmers might come to mind. But leotards and legwarmers are long gone—you just have to dress ready to sweat. In 1969, Judi Sheppard Missett laid the foundation for boutique fitness with the creation of Jazzercise. This dance-based fitness program focuses on performing novel moves and connecting with music. These are great ways to continually increase brain pathways and stay healthier for longer. “People may think that Jazzercise is cardio-dance only, but we also incorporate strength training into every class. We even have specific strength training formats now,” says Marketing Coordinator and instructor Erin Van Kirk. “We’re at the forefront of what research is showing exercise needs to be. We stay on top of not just the trends, but what the research says is important as we age.” Jazzercise ATX is a home away from home for participants young and old, boasting 45 group classes per week. Given that it is the sole premier center for the Greater Austin area, those participants come into the Lakeline Mall area from Liberty Hill to Hutto to Lakeway. Owner Chrissy Hardin is at the helm, encouraging personalities to shine through carefully curated choreography. “I’m a Jazzercise brat. My little brother and I grew up going to the YMCA where we would do Jazzercise after school. My mom would get there and do her class, and we would sit in the back, do our homework, and eat a snack,” says Hardin. “After I had my kids and we had just moved to Houston, I didn’t know anybody. The first thing I thought was, ‘Where’s the local Jazzercise?’ When I moved to Austin, I did the same thing and immediately had a community.”

Following her first class in Dallas alongside her sister-in-law, and later her own introduction to the Austin center, Van Kirk similarly found her community through Jazzercise. It evolved into a safe space that went beyond the physical workout. “I have five kids and when I found out I was pregnant with my fourth, I was a bit overwhelmed. I remember going to class and there was a song that said something like, ‘You can do this, this is where you’re meant to be,’” says Van Kirk. “I told the women in my class right away that I was pregnant. Not only was it important to have their support because I don’t have my actual family living close by, but when I needed to go to appointments, I always had someone to babysit my kids.” As moms, Hardin and Van Kirk find great value in providing a stress-free environment for parents and guardians through Jazzercise ATX. By offering free child care during class, the center emphasizes the importance of maintaining friendships and staying connected. At its core, Jazzercise is about taking care of one another. “The year of the 50th anniversary of Jazzercise, we were hosting a big Thanksgiving Day class. Corporate had put together a set of songs through the decades, and there were 50 people in the room,” says Hardin. “We ended with ‘Last Dance’ by Donna Summer. I was looking out at the crowd and the energy brought me to tears. Seeing everyone smile and have a moment, you think about how many people’s lives you touch.” Let your guard down when you sign up for a full-body workout at Jazzercise ATX! Learn more at jazzercise.com.

“I always tell people after my classes that they have homework. It’s to take their happy, positive, radiant energy out into the world and spread it like glitter.” — Chrissy Hardin JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C EDA R PA R KT X

Nav ig at i ng Fi n a n c i a l S e a s Find out about Edward Jones Financial Advisor Cole Drum’s dedication to serving ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLE DRUM

Cole Drum’s days are spent meeting with clients, reviewing their portfolios, tax-advantaged investments, beneficiaries, and preparing for the unexpected. Out of the office, he may be found hiking, fishing, or golfing. Perhaps he’s even flying to visit beautiful places around the world, such as the Maldives or more recently Berlin. Having served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, Drum is no stranger to travel. Despite all of the landscapes that he has experienced, though, Texas has always been home. With his return to civilian life, he settled down in the Greater Austin area. “I was looking for something that I could do to serve and help people, which is what I had been doing on a different level. Basically, looking for a way to be a part of my local community,” says Drum. Part of this meant joining the American Legion Post 911 to support veteran causes in Central Texas. While he participates in other fundraisers, he spent three

years heading their annual charity golf tournament. When combining his passion for giving back with his love of numbers, becoming a financial advisor just made sense. Through Edward Jones, Drum finds fulfillment in guiding families and small business owners to prepare for transitional periods and reach their goals. “I’ve been to high school graduations, college graduations… I was able to be there when a young couple bought their first house… Getting married, having a baby… Pretty much any life thing that you can think of,” says Drum. “That’s definitely part of the value-added, getting to earn their trust and stay in contact with them.” As a Master Training Specialist, Drum enjoys educating the public on how to achieve financial success. He believes that everyone should have an advisor, regardless of how much money they have or how young they are.

GET TO KNOW CEDAR PARK PREMIER DENTISTRY’S DR. TIFFANY KONDOFF

Dental Destiny: The Path to Practicing ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW CHAMBERS

LOCA L’S ON LY | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

“

“ We love w h at we d o a n d h ave f u n d o i n g it .” — D r. T i f fa ny Ko n d of f

Some people have unwavering clarity about their life’s path from a young age. Dr. Tiffany Kondoff is one of those, having known since her teenage years that she would pursue a career in the dental field. During high school, Dr. Kondoff got a summer job at her orthodontist’s office. While studying biology at Texas Tech University, she continued working for Austin Orthodontics as an orthodontic assistant. “My passion for dentistry and clinical care grew into an enthusiasm that I knew I wanted to continue for the rest of my life. This led me to my attendance at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for my Doctorate in Dental Surgery,” says Dr. Kondoff. “Since I grew up in the Cedar Park area, it only seemed fitting to come back to practice and provide care for my community.” Dr. Kondoff went on to meet Dr. Dale Williams through a mutual friend in the field. At the time, Dr. Williams was looking for a partner for his practice, Cedar Park Premier Dentistry. The two found that their philosophies for offering ethical, esthetic, and compassionate dentistry lined up harmoniously. Over the past five years, the CPPD team has been going strong, doing dentistry not just with their hands but also with their hearts. With a promise to maintain the positive atmosphere the practice has fostered, Dr. Kondoff officially took ownership in August, following news of Dr. Williams’ upcoming retirement. “We love what we do and have fun doing it,” says Dr. Kondoff. “After my long career in dentistry, I think the patients that make the biggest impact are the cases that are truly life-changing for that person. Giving someone the confidence to smile, socialize, eat, and function is the most rewarding thing I do.”

Dr. Kondoff encourages not letting a fear of the dentist inhibit you from seeking care. CPPD strives to make your experience comfortable by walking you through your treatment step-by-step and holding your hand through any procedure. Beyond working diligently to provide personalized services, the CPPD team has incredibly generous spirits. They are hands-on in aiding and uplifting the residents of Cedar Park, Leander, and Liberty Hill. “We consistently support the local schools in fundraising and collect supplies each year for teachers in the area,” says Dr. Kondoff. “Our team is also committed to food drives, Secret Santa programs, and toy drives for Dell Children’s hospitals throughout the year. We even support our local first responders in their efforts in the community, as well as give discounts for all military and first responder families.” Because of the group of friendly professionals surrounding her, Dr. Kondoff’s workday never feels like “work.” While staying current on advances in the dental field is a top priority, her ultimate focus is on the patients. “I look forward to continuing to provide the same care as we always have, and feel privileged to carry the torch from Dr. Williams into the future,” says Dr. Kondoff. “My team and I are eager to be a safe, non-judgmental office where people can obtain quality dental care for years to come.” Book your appointment with Cedar Park Premier Dentistry at cedarparkdental.com, or visit Dr. Kondoff and the crew at 209 Denali Pass Dr, Suite B.

Beyond the Gloves JOIN THE CLASS UFC GYM COMMUNITY ALONGSIDE OWNER JESSE OCEL

Growing up in northern Virginia, Jesse Ocel was no stranger to the government hub of D.C. When he tackled his degree in Administration of Justice, it was with the goal of someday joining an intelligence agency. But after landing a job at a Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini dealership, he went on to spend the next several years in the automotive industry. Tesla recruited Ocel to open a store in his home state before he was later moved to California and then Texas. No matter where he has lived, though, the one consistency in his life has been fitness. Before or after punching the clock, Ocel would make time to work out. And one day, he realized that Tesla simply wasn’t his passion. “I took the leap of faith and quit without having anything to jump into,” says Ocel. “I was searching for opportunities and saw that the CLASS UFC GYM franchise was looking for people, and I could really get behind it. I want to do something that I’m passionate about, that I care about, that I can put my name and my money behind faithfully.”

A modern twist on traditional boxing and high-intensity interval training classes, CLASS UFC GYM incorporates multiple pieces of equipment to help burn calories and build muscle. With coaches who are certified by UFC’s own master trainers, you are pushed to discover your strongest, most confident self. It’s also ensured that your workouts are truly effective thanks to Myzone’s real-time feedback. With this wearable device, your heart rate is calculated and you receive tailored Effort Points to hold yourself accountable. Both on the screen during class and on your phone, Myzone shows how you are building on your progress, with Effort Points adjusting as you get in better shape. “We can train elite athletes or you can pretend like you’re one and get to that level. Even though we have ‘UFC’ on the door and it can be a little bit intimidating, once you come in and see the gym, it’s like, ‘Oh, I just get to let all of my anger and frustration out, and get a fun workout in at the same time,’” says Ocel. “This is literally for everyone.” Ocel’s dream team at CLASS UFC GYM North Austin shares his enthusiasm for not just providing challenging and satisfying workouts, but also staying community-focused. That’s why they stay dedicated to offering regular member events, as well as participating in outreach throughout the Cedar Park area. As a new business owner and new dad, Ocel looks forward to expanding his gym family while raising his own family. He hopes to lead by example, surrounding his daughter with the fitness lifestyle. “We just want you to get in the door and experience that sense of community. That’s the real reason I built this, for community more than anything,” says Ocel. “You’re going to talk to me, to your coach, to the other people in class. You’re going to actually make connections. What you put in is what you’re going to get out, and we’re going to help you put in as much as possible.”

FINDING Life's BA LA NCE

BUILD A MORE SUSTAINABLE ROUTINE WITH WAY TO WELLNESS

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEGAN MARSHALL

Angela Schaack has a background in mental health, having started her career in family service agencies and psychiatric hospitals. Because of what she witnessed during that time, she became inspired to get into a more preventative way of doing therapy, leading her toward the school system. For over 20 years, she focused on providing guidance lessons to children, teaching them how to deal with anger and stress. She also

tackled epidemics involving eating and lack of exercise, along with the identification of ADHD. “It came to light that we need something more sustainable for people, so I started researching alternative ways to manage health and wellness,” says Schaack. “What I wanted to do with Way to Wellness, after deciding to really build this business, is to be able to find everything that you need in one place.” Way to Wellness’s holistic program is centered around three core elements—nutrition, movement, and lifestyle. With these, Schaack supports clients in creating effective plans of action to build their inner resources and skills. She achieves this by getting to know them on a personal level. “When someone comes in, we ask what is most important to them and what they are having the most difficulty with,” says Schaack. “By gradually adding one realistic thing per week to their routine, it becomes part of their routine. It’s not a quick fix, but people notice the difference and it becomes self-reinforcing.” Above all else, Schaack encourages you to find bits of time throughout the day to get moving. It could be training for a 10K with your family or going Bollywood dancing with a friend. Other great choices include the calming and centering tools of yoga and tai chi. Don’t let your resolutions fall by the wayside. Discover your strengths and meet your goals over time. Visit way-to-wellness.com to take control of your mental and physical health with therapeutic coaching and retreats offered by Angela Schaack, LCSW, CIMHP, AFAA-GFI.

“When setting goals, make sure to have a clear plan and a support system.”
