House of Colour Austin-Avery Ranch wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the pandemic. A speech-language pathologist by trade, Carolyn Rector loved her career but needed a reset. She had always loved fashion and styling for fun, so when she saw the opportunity to start up a local franchise of House of Colour, she jumped on it.

Rector went through intensive training, where she found out just how bespoke Color and Style Analysis is. It’s about body architecture and geometrics, personality and lifestyle, and functionality and authenticity.

“Since getting my colors done and being really conscious about what I do wear, I’ve noticed that people are complimenting me more. Abby Diggs has always loved doing hair. By working in salon suites, she has had the freedom to be her own boss. Come 2021, Diggs was inspired to take her career to the next level through Copper + Mane Luxury Salon Suites, dreaming of an upscale spot for independent stylists just like her.

“With most salon suites around Austin, the landlords just want the bills paid, but don’t value their tenants or want to improve the overall look of their salons,” says Diggs. “I wanted to create a space that gave each individual beauty professional a luxury feel with little start-up costs, as well as provide benefits that are appreciated for individual businesses.”

These benefits include maternity leave, vacation time, on-site laundry, and fully furnished workspaces. For the next couple

of years, Diggs continued to see her values come to life in a special way.

Once the nine move-in-ready studios were completed, Diggs and her new team honored the hard work that went into it all with a grand opening party. It was one for the books, complete with a variety of local vendors showing their support.

“To see it all come to light was amazing, especially because we celebrated with our tenants and families,” says Diggs. “The problem with most salon suites is that the number of tenants gets so large that it’s hard to connect. Keeping the salon suite number to a minimum has really allowed me to connect well with each business owner.”

Diggs has felt incredibly fulfilled seeing how happy the tenants of Copper + Mane are. Between monthly meals and regular events

for socializing, the women behind the studios have the opportunity to truly get to know one another. This makes for an improved experience for them and their clients.

PAOLA MATHÉ DISCUSSES THE EMPOWERMENT OF ECO-FRIENDLY FASHION

Translating to “strong woman” in Haitian Kreyol, Fanm Djanm is a business centered around inspiring women through thoughtfully prepared pieces. Before blossoming into what it is today, Fanm Djanm was the idea of social entrepreneur Paola Mathé, based on her heritage and love of color.

“I used to wear headwraps all of the time. After being stopped countless times and looking around for a shop that offers them, I couldn’t find one,” says Mathé. “I decided to start a brand that focused primarily on headwraps. I started by myself in my tiny studio apartment in Harlem, and sold them on the weekends on folded tables at markets and on the streets.”

Now, Mathé has a team and a storefront in Austin, and has shipped tens of thousands of headwraps around the world. Fanm Djanm has evolved into a zero-waste company, transparently creating sustainable practices without sacrificing product quality.

“In Haiti, I went to a Catholic school where we all looked the same and were expected to act the same,” says Mathé. “How do we create a beautiful life if we’re constantly thinking about ways to fit in and only live to make others comfortable? I say live boldly, but do it your way.”

For Mathé, style is not just the designer you wear, but colors, lines, shapes, textures, and occasions. Style is the way you choose to greet the world every day, expressing yourself rather than impressing others.

DRIVING IN THE FAST LANE

Throughout childhood, Kino Ayoubi remembers his uncle taking him to the toy store. There, he would go straight to the matchbox cars, specifically asking for the greatest, oldest Porsches. Over time, he accumulated a large collection that he proudly lined up on his bed. Ayoubi’s addiction to cars later grew into an addiction to driving.

“At 13, I would sneak out and take my dad’s Mercedes for a drive. I didn’t really get caught until about a year later when I returned the car home, basically totaled,” says Ayoubi. “So, I started driving at a very young age, self-taught. After the accident, my dad decided to take me out and sharpen my skills.”

Ayoubi’s fascination with cars has never wavered. In fact, he started his own group called the Austin GT Club in 2019. “The car community exposed me to a lot of like-minded people that expanded my understanding of business in general," says Ayoubi. "Add my education to that equation, and I’m now providing very specialized business consulting services to friends and clients."

From Mustang to Corvette, Porsche to Lamborghini, and now the bar-setting McLaren… he commits to putting miles on his cars, both on the road and on the COTA track, rather than leaving them in the garage.

“Most of my memories with my cars are the driving experiences. Each car I’ve had offered something special and different from the others,” says Ayoubi. “Every car tells a story, and every car has grown my circle of good friends. The best thing about having my cars would be the connections I’ve made and the great relationships I have with the people in my life today.”

Lifestyle's newest awardwinning photographer, Matthew Chambers

Howdy folks! I'm Matthew Chambers and it is a total pleasure to join the team. I started shooting when I was about 10 years old and took it professional in 1996 on a garage sale camera. Back in those days, $50 and a six-pack of beer got you a photographer for as long as your film held out. Since then, I've witnessed photography go from film to digital and now from mirrored cameras to mirrorless! The journey has been amazing.

Over the last 27 years, I've picked up a few thousand awards and recognitions, including two international rankings, one for 17th Best Boudoir Photographer worldwide in 2012 and then in 2019 as 2nd Best Wedding Photographer worldwide, as well as an induction to the Wedding Photographer Hall of Fame. I specialize in portraiture but happily shoot anything you can imagine!
