As the Editor, I loved getting to learn about the passions of our residents through this issue. I spoke with a professional artist about how a single comment from a teacher became his motivating force to go into the industry. I came across a veteran who has shifted gears in life to take on her dream of creating one-of-a-kind gourmet candles. I got to know one of the most amazing organizations in our area that devotes its resources to the children of parents with serious illnesses. I learned about a family who uprooted their lives and business in Ecuador to find their place in Texas. To say this experience has been a gift is an understatement. There are an infinite amount of reasons to love local. And here at Cedar Park City Lifestyle, our goal is to drive that sentiment home with every issue. THE ART OF TEACHING PROFESSIONAL ARTIST JOSEPH FIACCO EXPLORES HIS STUDIO EXPERIENCE

While teachers aim to inspire their students, they are often inspired by students. When Joseph Fiacco started teaching, it was at a privately-owned kids' art program in California. He was struck by how fearless and eager his students were. Fiacco went on to open his own studio 33 years ago. “It has always been my belief that if you let students choose the subject matter and style, they will focus on it with much more enthusiasm,” says Fiacco. “That is what I wanted when I was a young art student. I wish I had a program like I teach when I was a kid.” Fiacco’s students come to him for several reasons. Some are serious about their art, while others intend to learn how to focus and build confidence. Although he believes that teaching art will be his lifelong career, he faced adversity during the pandemic. In one day, he went from 240 students to zero. “I was fortunate that my students hired me to make art for their homes to keep me afloat until I could teach again. I missed them,” says Fiacco. “I have made wonderful friendships along the way. Many of my students from long ago contact me to say hi and thank me. Many have gone on to be professional artists themselves.” Despite his passion for teaching, Fiacco’s favorite place to be creative is his home studio. It’s a space where he can lose himself to music, ranging from progressive rock to big band. Along with his diverse music taste, Fiacco works with a variety of subjects. This includes musical legends, Hindu gods and goddesses, and his Rustscapes series. “I don’t consider what I do a ‘job,’” says Fiacco. “When it stops being fun and magical to me, I’ll stop making art. I don’t see that happening.”

To this day, that piece can be found in his home art studio. Years after his initial brush with drawing, Fiacco attended the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, where he graduated with honors. It is there that he gained a better understanding of the elements and principles of design. Fiacco now teaches at The Studio Cedar Park, creates unique images for commissions, and paints live at The Lucky Rabbit in Jonestown. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START SOULSHINE RHYTHM EXPERIENCE?

HOW IMPORTANT IS INCLUSIVITY TO YOU AT YOUR EVENTS?

SUZY: “Soulshine Rhythm Experience was born out of a combination of my personal journey of healing and a calling to serve others in theirs. I had been training and performing with a West African drumming group for several years when I became interested in exploring the physical, cognitive, and therapeutic benefits of drumming. Following a traumatic event in my life, I had begun to reflect on my experiences with drumming and was fascinated by how it had, unbeknownst to me, contributed significantly to my healing process.”

SUZY: “Humans thrive when we are connected, and music is a unifying language. Regardless of age, ability, or previous musical experience, I want everyone to know that here, in the circle, you matter. Your voice matters. Your contribution to the circle matters. When a participant feels that for the first time, it is life-changing. I get to hear so many wonderful stories of how the participant was so inspired by their experience that they were able to carry that inspiration into other areas of their lives. And that is magic.”

I’D LOVE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR FIRST COMMUNITY DRUM CIRCLE. SUZY: “The intention was to connect with the community and share in our love of drumming and rhythm. It turned out to be so much more. The positive response to our first event inspired me to learn more about facilitation and how I could best combine my drumming skills with my ability to connect with people. I wanted to create ‘rhythm experiences’ where anyone would feel comfortable participating in a drum circle and, as a result, receive the many benefits of group drumming.”

WHY WOULD YOU SAY YOUR COMMUNITY DRUM CIRCLES ARE UNIQUE? SUZY: “Soulshine Rhythm Experience events are unique because they are interactive. They are about you, me, and we. Over the last 15 years, I’ve collected a lot of drums and now I get to share them with the community! At a Soulshine community event, I provide the drums and participants have an opportunity to experiment with many types of hand-held percussion from around the world. Everyone is encouraged to find the sounds that resonate with them personally.”

WHO DO YOU DRUM WITH TODAY? SUZY: “I drum with companies and executive leaders who want an innovative way to support and empower their teams, and with children who are learning about mindfulness and cooperation. From teenagers struggling with depression and adults recovering from addiction, to seniors living with dementia and active agers looking to try something new. More and more, my private session clients are therapists seeking effective self-care practices and have heard of the many therapeutic benefits that drumming offers.”

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF SOULSHINE RHYTHM EXPERIENCE? SUZY: “My hope is that I get to keep connecting people to the transformative experience of drumming and rhythm. Being connected to your own rhythm can support well-being in ways you may not have considered. You may even think you don’t have rhythm. I assure you, you do. And one of the most rewarding aspects of this work is that I get to help you find it.”

When it comes to our attempts to create an acne-free lifestyle, we may spend lots of money for little payoff. “We don’t need any prescription to clear acne. Known for its authentic ingredients, the Ecuadorian Chocolate Factory aims to preserve the nutritional factors of the raw cocoa bean. During the post-harvest process, the beans are roasted and shelled to obtain the cocoa nibs for making chocolates. Sweet prevails in the chocolate market, but owner Carlos Galarza proposes semi-sweet and more bitter chocolates due to their nutritional benefits. Still, the bestsellers are the sweetest products, including the 55% chocolate that their truffles are made with. The members of the Galarza family are especially fans of the coconut, coffee, raspberry, and passion fruit truffles.

Ecuador is known for its appreciation of cocoa, although not many people dedicate their lives to it. Carlos Galarza’s family was so drawn to the idea that they decided to plant their own cocoa farm. “Because the origin of the cocoa beans is unique to our farm, we control each step of the process from the plant, nutrition, pruning, weeding, and disease control with organic products,” says Galarza. Despite the plantation being in Ecuador, Galarza dreamed of coming to the United States and sharing the language of chocolate. It has been really nice to meet so many people and be able to support We Are Blood and local vendors and artists. Cancer is an illness that affects not only the person who has it, but also their entire family. When Suzi Simmons was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, her world was rocked. At this time, her two daughters were in kindergarten and fourth grade. “My husband and I were so worried about how they would handle our new situation—watching me go through chemo and surgery, as well as all the changes in the household because I was so sick,” says Simmons. “A friend referred us to Wonders & Worries, and as soon as I reached out to them, a weight was lifted from my shoulders. This amazing organization provides free professional support to children and teens who have a parent with a serious illness such as cancer, ALS, and diabetes.” Simmons spoke with a child life specialist who invited her daughters to join a peer support group. Once a week for the next six weeks, the girls were given the time to express the feelings they were experiencing. They also gained invaluable coping skills for dealing with those feelings. Wonders & Worries offered

something well beyond simply helping Simmons’ daughters navigate her cancer, which she will forever treasure. “I was lucky enough to join the Wonders & Worries team in April 2022 as their Donor Relations Manager,” says Simmons. “I’m thrilled to be able to serve this organization daily that gave so much to our family.” The services provided by Wonders & Worries are free of charge to families. They rely on their sponsors for funding and the helpful hands of volunteers in order to support the work they do within the community. With the mission to help children and teenagers reach their full potential despite at-home hardship, Wonders & Worries created the Teen Leadership Council. This program was founded on the idea of building up the next generation of philanthropists. “Rather than simply collecting money for an organization, these teens plan and execute an event fundraiser from start to finish. This year’s teens are planning a Pup Fashion Show and Yappy Hour on April 16th at Zilker Park,” says Simmons. “They also learn business and marketing skills from various community leaders along the way.” As an organization at large, Wonders & Worries hosts three impactful fundraisers each year. They have their family-friendly Urban Scavenger Hunt that is based all around the Greater Austin area, followed by an after-party at the Zilker Lodge. Another event is their No Worries Classic at Reunion Ranch, which features a two-hour clay pigeon shooting competition. Finally, there is their biggest fundraiser of the year—the Envision Gala.

“Our Envision Gala brings together over 550 individuals from the business and medical communities to support the Wonders & Worries mission and highlight families that have benefited from the support in the past year,” says Simmons. “It is an excellent opportunity to remind referring professionals that we are here to support those they serve.” The team behind Wonders & Worries enjoys connecting and collaborating with other organizations and individuals to pull these fundraisers together. They are able to obtain the resources needed to help families build a solid foundation of communication. But for their services to work, families enduring serious illnesses need to be proactive. “Don’t wait until there is a visible problem,” says Simmons. “Every child and family can benefit from Wonders & Worries support when navigating illness.
