LIFESTYLE LETTER
Cheers to a New Year!
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Pam Dugdale | pam.dugdale@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Megan Marshall | megan.marshall@citylifestyle.com
Wasn’t it just yesterday when we were ringing in 2022? It feels like the year went by in a flash. We have made so many memories with our friends, relatives, colleagues, and neighbors. Over the past few months, our Cedar Park City Lifestyle team has been excited to be part of those memories with you! There is a lot to be grateful for as we go into this next chapter of our lives. But as we reflect on this past year and welcome January with open arms, recognize the fresh start that 2023 brings. Ask yourself… Where do I want to go from here? New Year’s resolutions are an age-old tradition. They provide us with an opportunity to prioritize what means the most to us and establish our latest goals. This could include taking our health into our own hands with direct patient care. It might be finding treatments to make ourselves feel both beautiful and physically strong. Our goals may even be based on trying new things that will relax and connect our minds and bodies. But at the heart of it all is achieving personal growth. My goal as a City Lifestyle Editor is to help you achieve that sense of personal growth. Cedar Park is full of amazing people and businesses that can expertly assist you in conquering your New Year’s resolutions. You just need the right motivation. Through our Health and Wellness issue, we hope to shine a light on some of the ways that you can positively transform your life. Perhaps you will find your next favorite workout, be inspired to try some healthy meals, or learn how to revamp your home. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” You have 365 days to attain joy, restfulness, and security. Take this knowledge with you as you make this your greatest year yet! And don’t forget to take us on the journey with you. Wishing you and yours a happy New Year!

Happiness Begins with Good Health Find out how you can own your healthcare with Impact Family Wellness ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY SCHOOLCRAFT

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S
The greatest ideas often come to us by sheer coincidence. After ten years in the insurance-based healthcare system, Monica McKitterick was trying to figure out where to take her career. She was moving to Texas and wasn’t sure what the best path for her would be. But that’s when she came across a Facebook ad for direct patient care. “I looked into the concept and realized I could take better care of patients while having more control over my time. I was sold,” says McKitterick. “It took a bit of convincing to get my husband on board, but now we are three-and-a-half years in with nearly 1,100 patients and we couldn’t imagine life any other way.” McKitterick’s membership-based primary care office, Impact Family Wellness, allows patients to regain ownership of their healthcare. Patients are able to work one-on-one with their providers without the restrictions and regulations put in place by insurance companies. This direct line of communication is critical to creating an actual relationship with a provider, taking the fear and struggle out of healthcare. “My initial plan when starting Impact Family Wellness was to be a solo provider with my 400 to 500 patients, and that was going to be the extent of the practice,” says McKitterick. “After a year in the business, I realized our services were needed in our community and there were other providers like me looking to take better care of their patients. Joanna joined me in 2020, and Jessica and Kristin joined in 2022. I’m hoping to add another nurse practitioner in early 2023.”
Typical insurance-based providers have anywhere from 2,500 to 3,000 patients on their panel. This makes it impossible for them to know all of their patients on a personal basis. The four women currently behind Impact Family Wellness limit their patient loads to ensure that they have the time and resources to give them the care they deserve. Although Impact Family Wellness doesn’t accept insurance, personalized treatments can still save you thousands of dollars. “We have one body and if we can’t afford the time or money needed to keep it working well, then we have nothing,” says McKitterick. “By removing the roadblocks to healthcare, our members are much more likely to get their healthcare needs the attention they deserve, rather than letting symptoms worsen until there is no longer a fix.” With a mission to provide care for the community in a judgement-free manner, the Impact Family Wellness team is actively repairing the broken parts of our country’s healthcare system. They do this, in particular, with their small business partners, keeping employees happy and healthy while promoting the businesses. No matter who the patients are, though, McKitterick feels that her most rewarding experiences have come from helping someone realize that healthcare doesn’t have to be intimidating or confusing. “I had a patient in the first few months of practice who was a young female with issues that just kept being ignored by multiple providers. After chatting with her, CONTINUED >

we did an MRI and found she had terrible endometriosis,” says McKitterick. “I spoke directly with an OB/GYN who agreed surgical intervention was necessary, and after years of suffering, the patient was finally able to live a normal life. Sometimes it just takes some time to listen and a little compassion to truly change a patient’s life.” Outside of working hours, McKitterick continues to share this compassion through CASA of Williamson County. This national volunteer movement has been around since 1977 and became its own non-profit organization in 2009. Volunteers advocate for children in the foster care system that have been neglected or abused. CASA of Williamson County gives these children a powerful voice, whether it be at school or in court.
“I have always had a special place in my heart for foster children and am always looking for a way to help,” says McKitterick. “I volunteered at a CASA event and realized that I could help by joining the board of directors to ensure this amazing organization has the resources needed to provide this necessary service. I was previously the VP and currently serve as the treasurer. My main focus is on helping with fundraising and ensuring our community knows of this organization and the ways to help.” Each December, Impact Family Wellness offers a Santa experience with professional photos. All donations go directly to CASA of Williamson County. Because when their team says that they deeply care for our community and want to make their office a great place to be, they mean it.

FINANCIAL FOCUS “vital signs.” Is your portfolio still appropriate for your risk tolerance and time horizon? Does it provide the growth potential you’ll need to achieve your long-term goals? Is it diversified enough, or do you own too many similar investments? Although diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, it can reduce the impact of financial market volatility on your portfolio.

HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR FINANCIAL FITNESS?
It’s always smart to stay physically fit. But financial fitness is important, too. Are you doing everything you can to boost your financial well-being? Financial health is on the minds of many. 70% of Americans say the COVID-19 pandemic caused them to pay more attention to their longterm finances, found in Edward Jones/Age Wave survey, Four Pillars of the New Retirement: What a Difference a Year Makes. Some feel more positive about their future than others. Baby Boomers came through the pandemic in generally good financial shape, while Gen Z and Millennials felt the greatest negative financial impact. Women’s confidence in retirement savings remains low, as the pandemic widened the economic gender gap, particularly for women of color. Your outlook depends on your demographics. Regardless of these demographics, take these steps to improve your financial health: Conduct an investment “check-up.” Regular check-ups are key to maintaining good physical health. The same principle applies to your investments. Periodically assess their

Take preventive measures. You take medicines, vitamins, and other supplements in an effort to treat existing or prevent future illnesses. You also can, and should, take preventive measures to boost your financial health. Do you have sufficient life and disability insurance? If your family situation changed through divorce, remarriage, or childbirth, have you updated the beneficiary designations on your insurance policies? Have you taken steps to protect your financial independence by addressing the potentially huge costs of long-term care? Avoid unhealthy moves. Smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and excessive stress are considered unhealthy for our bodies. Some activities are unhealthy for our financial fitness, too. You may be tempted to tap into your IRA or 401(k) to pay for short-term needs. If it isn’t essential or you can obtain other sources of funding, you should avoid touching retirement accounts. Withdrawals may incur taxes and penalties. Just as important, these accounts are intended to provide you with some of the income you’ll need for retirement. The more you deplete them now, the more financial strain may occur during retirement. Staying physically fit requires determination and work. The same is true for financial fitness. The effort you put into staying financially healthy helps you keep moving toward your financial goals. Edward Jones. Member SIPC. Cole Drum - (512) 296-2089 Cole.Drum@edwardjones.com

ACHIEVING YOUR #BESTSELF R3 CRYOSPA OWNER AND CEO, SHAE CONNOR, EXPLORES HER CAREER AND WELLNESS OPTIONS

Often, we spend our teenage years discovering our passions. During Shae Connor’s first year out of high school, although she pursued a traditional degree, she considered a career in massage or physical therapy. Ten years later, she turned that dream into a reality. “In March of 2014, the chiropractor I rented a room from told me that he decided to retire. I started looking for space and found an amazing little spot with three rooms and jumped in with both feet,” says Connor. “I expanded into the Athletic Recovery & Pain Reduction field, and then I moved into beauty and body contouring with Cryoskin.” When Connor started R3 CryoSpa, it was driven by her desire to help people feel better. She aims to make a positive impact on the residents of Cedar Park by improving their quality of life and making them recognize their inner beauty. Since the practice’s expansion, she has had her stellar team, Connie Kilgore and Jeanette Danhert, by her side. “I met Connie and Jeanette at a Krav Maga studio. We became friends while working out and training together,” says Connor. “They have been amazingly helpful with the growth of my business. I will always appreciate the help that they have given and continue to give when needed.”

For the R3 CryoSpa team, it’s about the whole package—health, wellness, and beauty of the mind and body. As a Licensed Massage Therapist and Cryoskin Master Trainer/Instructor, Connor has dedicated herself to learning the best non-invasive practices to offer. Her heart is made full when she sees clients realize the potential they have while on their wellness journey. “A client came in for nerve pain that was so severe they couldn’t function day-to-day. Work was excruciating and exercise was just too painful to even consider,” says Connor. “We tried whole-body cryotherapy and PEMF, both for inflammation and pain relief. Within a few weeks of combo sessions, they were not only able to clean their home, but go to the gym and work out.” Connor believes that even if you have the perfect exterior, if you don’t have the energy to live life to the fullest, you miss out on some of the greatest things. Balance is key. By putting your mind and body first, you open the door for a lifetime of memories. “It’s really important to get clear on the goals of your journey in life,” says Connor. “Do you need more flexibility, less pain, better sleep, tighter muscles, less fat, more relaxation, better recovery? SELF-DISCOVERY THROUGH MOVEMENT ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM HOFMANN
Learn about Cori Hofmann’s passion for being active and her journey with barre3
Fitness has been a key component in Cori Hofmann’s life. Growing up with a passion for sports, she was especially fond of horseback riding and dancing. During college, she sought out ways to stay active, but wasn’t drawn to the student gym’s treadmills. Instead, Hofmann found herself turning toward hot yoga and high-intensity interval training. “For me, movement is my way to relieve stress,” says Hofmann. “When I was studying for my CPA exam and feeling under pressure, I would go for a run. Then, when I found barre3, I would go daily at 6 AM before walking to the office. On the nights I was lucky enough to leave by 5:30, I would catch an evening class to shake off the tension of sitting at a desk all day.” Hofmann had stumbled across barre3 in 2013 and never looked back. She immediately connected with the workout and would leave classes feeling energized, present, and strong. After two years as a client, Hofmann became a studio instructor, teaching in the evenings after work. But it wasn’t until moving to Texas that she and her husband, Adam, decided to open up their own barre3 studio. “I was burnt out from my finance career and craving something different. I contacted barre3, inquired about

franchising options, and the rest is history,” says Hofmann. “We signed our franchise agreement in March 2019 and planned to break ground in March 2020. Then, the world stopped. Luckily, we weren’t delayed too much, and opened our studio doors in August.” Since opening, Hofmann has found a second family at barre3. From the instructors to the front desk to the play lounge staff, she has developed meaningful working relationships. Along with her implicit trust in her team, Hofmann loves getting to educate and engage with her clients. She encourages them to make time for classes within their day-to-day lifestyles. “We recognize that COVID has changed daily life, and it’s hard to find a routine. So, we operate our studio in a way that can provide consistency. You know we’ll be here for you when you need to take a class,” says Hofmann. “Many of my staff are also moms, so we are closed mid-day to all find balance and have time to connect with our families.” The greatest advice that Hofmann can give to those hoping to improve their health and wellness is that it all begins with moving your body. Start small and give yourself grace. And make sure to take action before you overthink it.

What to Expect from Classes
1 2.
| Full-body workouts
"In our 45 or 60-minute classes, our clients get their heart rate up; work their arms, abs, glutes, and legs; and get a cool down with some truly wonderful breathwork at the end. Not many other fitness modalities can offer that in one class."
2
| Participation from anywhere
"I’ve had clients enjoy our livestream classes when they’re on vacation. One of my clients was visiting family in Costa Rica and invited her relatives there to join us!"
3 3.
| Motivated instructors
"Our instructors have their own style, their own personalities, and music preferences. This allows for our clients to come as often as they want for their goals, and not get bored."
4
| Mind-body connection emphasis
"The mind-body connection is incredible, not only for helping you get deeper into moves so you can work your muscles, but also to connect with your breath for your mental health. To me, it’s about being intuitive and learning to pay attention to the signals your body is telling you."

Visiting the Texas farmers' market has become our non-negotiable weekend habit. It’s truly a feast for the senses. The most wonderful part of the experience is soaking in the good vibes and community spirit. We encourage our toddler to say hello to the farmers and learn where the food comes from. He loves the live music and pets every dog he comes across!

in the creek, playing soccer, eating snacks, watching airplanes, talking about trucks, and collecting sticks. My husband and I also take short hikes with our toddler. Enjoying time outside as a family never fails to give us a gentle and uplifting internal energy.

Baking is a perfect way to keep our 3-year-old entertained and away from gadgets. He has so much fun while learning kitchen skills, such as measuring ingredients, cracking eggs, following recipes, and using utensils properly. Spending time in the kitchen together is a memorable experience.
Nidhi Singh lives with her toddler and husband in Cedar Park, TX. By profession, she is a product manager for a technology company. She is a food and fitness enthusiast.

Make Your Home Shine Gain expert cleaning insight from MaidPro owner Ricardo Castañeda
1. Keep dirt where it belongs—outside. To keep your floors clean, prevent dirt from getting there in the first place. Doormats give doorways a little personality and intercept the majority of dirt and dust coming into your home.

3.
4.

6.
2. Add color to your cleaning routine. Colorcoding your cleaning towels stops cross-contamination. Use different colored towels when cleaning your bathrooms and kitchen to prevent germs from spreading. 3. Take the time to disinfect. Read the product labels on your disinfectants to determine how much "contact time" is recommended. Keep surfaces wet to allow products to effectively kill the germs. 4. Reduce pet shedding. Shedding is natural and healthy for canines, but that doesn't make it any easier to clean. Brush out dead hair before it leaves your furry friend's coat. Bristle brushes work on all coats. 5. Clean or replace HVAC filters. Regularly remove, inspect, and either clean or replace HVAC filters, as these can also be breeding grounds for mold, mildew, and other allergens. 6. Clean your tools. Sponges, towels, and other cleaning tools can be the perfect environment for germs to thrive and multiply. Clean, dry, and disinfect them. Throw your sponges and towels through the washer and dryer.
