Austin Spurs host Business Lunch 'N' Learn event On October 21st, the Austin Spurs basketball team came together with the community for their Business Lunch 'N' Learn event. This was held at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park, where the team plays its home games. While sitting courtside, their leadership offered a Q&A for community members to learn more about the NBA G League and the different membership options for businesses. Getting Festive with Grit & Grace Shauna Cotton and Amanda Madden reminisce on the start of their boutique and the holiday season

Once upon a time, Grit & Grace Boutique was only a dream. It was written about on cocktail napkins and discussed over weekends of champagne. But in November of 2015, co-owners Amanda Madden and Shauna Cotton opened their doors. They were surprised to find that those doors just kept opening. Customers immediately showed excitement over the clothing, accessories, and gifts. Along with the unrelenting love and support Madden and Cotton have been provided by their husbands (aka, the Grit & Grace Guys), those initial customers are what kept them going. The boutique continues to evolve. “When we got the keys to our first store, it felt like we had climbed Mount Everest. If you have never had to maneuver commercial real estate as a woman, consider yourself blessed,” says Madden. “We got the keys and took our husbands with folding chairs and a bottle of champagne, and toasted to the beginning of making our dreams a reality. We were naive and so excited, even though we had no idea all the things that were to come.” “We look back now and can only laugh at our first market experience. In true us fashion, we dressed like we were going to a business meeting on Wall Street, not having any idea that we would walk miles and miles,” says Cotton. “That night, a rep we work with suggested a restaurant in Dallas that he thought we would enjoy. It must have been fate. We melted our exhausted selves into the booth, ordered our favorite cocktail—cucumber martini— and toasted to a job well faked and then laughed. A tradition was born. After every buying trip, we still go to that restaurant, order the same cocktail, and eat the same meal as that very first time.”

Customer service has been a big factor in the success of Grit & Grace. Madden and Cotton love becoming part of their customers’ lives in more ways than just offering personal styling help. They have been through divorces, weddings, babies, moves, cancer, losses, and seven years of holidays. The buzz of the holidays is something that both Madden and Cotton treasure. It’s the time of year when they get to help their customers find that perfect present or party outfit. The women even host a Sip & Shop event in early December, which is their favorite night of the year. But spending the holiday season with their own families is of the utmost importance, as well. “My family has a tradition of getting holiday pajamas the night of Thanksgiving so that we can wear them all holiday season long. Then, we curl up to watch our first Christmas movie of the season,” says Madden. “I make my family follow a strict rule of no Christmas music until after Thanksgiving, though. When we are driving home from Thanksgiving, then the gloves are off and we blast Christmas music all the way home.” “We celebrate with our extended family the week before Christmas,” says Cotton. “The best part is our family white elephant gift exchange. It gets aggressive—no one holds back and all bets are off. A Lifetime of Faith Brings Strength & Courage TRISTIN AND TERESA ANN CRISWELL DISCUSS LIFE-CHANGING ACCIDENT AND THE POWER OF FAMILY ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY SCHOOLCRAFT

The Criswells believe that family isn’t just the people you are related to. Instead, it is those that you can go to without any reservations, who call you up higher. Whether you are in need of wisdom or a laugh, you can count on them. Teresa Ann and Tristin Criswell are as close as a mother and daughter can be. They often say that they are best friends, in the sense that they want the best for one another. The key to maintaining the strength of their relationship has been an open door of communication. “Something my mom has helped me with was reminding me that I am going through this life for the first time. She would also tell me, ‘You may only know me as a parent, but I understand a little bit of what you’re going through.’ She is eager to listen, and when I would confess things to her, I never once felt judged,” says Tristin. “It helps that Tristin values who I am as her mom. Her perspective has allowed for open communication,” says Teresa Ann. “Tristin is a problem solver and helps me tremendously. She has been an arrow in my life that points me to the Lord.” Communication is something that has proved important across their family at large. Both women note the big role that their fathers have played in making them who they are today. “Growing up, I had the gift of sassiness. I was quick with my words,” says Tristin. “My dad would encourage me by reminding me that there’s a time and place for my voice to be used and how I delivered what I was saying. He has valued my voice and taught me how to use it wisely.” “My dad is a very quiet man, but when he speaks, you better listen,” says Teresa Ann.

“He taught me that I can either tear down others or build them up with my words, so choose words that inspire others to live extraordinary lives.” When you are in your early 20s, you are still growing into your own. There are many years of memories to be made alongside your family. But sometimes, the world can take us by storm and change the course of what those memories look like. Tristin couldn’t have predicted ending up in a major car accident that left her with a compound fracture on her leg, paralysis on her left side, and a traumatic brain injury. And she certainly couldn’t have predicted that she would need to learn how to walk again. Luckily, she had her family by her every step of the way. “To an outsider looking in, it could look like my life was over. But it was just the beginning,” says Tristin. “As I look back on that month in the hospital, it was the most incredible time of getting to know God in ways that I could have ever imagined. Ever since that time, the trivial things in my life are now chalked up to opportunities to grow and learn.” “The accident was one of the greatest moments of impact in my life. It was the moment when I truly realized the significance of life,” says Teresa Ann. “I learned not to dismiss the hard and the difficult, but to take notice and then see it with proper perspective.” Following Tristin’s full recovery, she and Teresa Ann recognize that we are presented with choices every day. They feel that overcoming problems, no matter their size, is a matter of moving forward, finding peace, and encouraging others to do the same.

Thanks to the ever-expanding community of Cedar Park, there is so much to do during the holidays right in your own backyard. But what about those days when you want to get away with the family? Take a weekend of your December for the festivities in a city that rivals your favorite Hallmark movie—Fredericksburg. Having been named one of “The Best Small Towns for Christmas in the South,” Fredericksburg has something for everyone. Christmas Nights of Lights: Running daily from November 22nd to January 6th, the Fredericksburg Convention & Visitor Bureau puts on Christmas Nights of Lights. Following holiday music and a 10-minute audio presentation, the Community Christmas Tree and German Christmas Pyramid will be lit in Marketplatz. Kinderfest: The Pioneer Museum, which is known for its preservation of 19th-century German heritage, is also known for its Kinderfest tradition. For over 40 years, on the first Saturday of December, children have been able to bring a stocking to hang on the fireplace and listen to the telling of a Christmas story. Tannenbaum Ball: On December 10th, the Gillespie Historical Society and the Pioneer Museum will host Fredericksburg’s premier gala event of the holiday season at St. Mary’s Holy Family Center. Partake in a silent auction featuring lavish trips, dance along to a live band, and delight in the finest wine and dinner.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
