Cedar Park, what are you Thankful for this year? We have so many reasons to count our blessings! Looking around, we can see all types of wonderful, thoughtful, kind, and generous people living within our community. I encourage all of us to come together and make the changes we wish to see in our city, by starting within our individual lives. As the Publisher of Cedar Park City Lifestyle, I’m incredibly thankful to share stories about inspiring people from within our community, who set an example and encourage us all with their acts of kindness and generosity. From the men and women with the American Legion who honor our veterans and spread hope for generations to come by providing scholarships to local kids; to the open kindness shown by Hill Country Community Ministries to help feed, clothe, and fulfill dreams and create hope for a better tomorrow to those in need; to inspirational businesses, like GlowGal Salon, giving their time and services to help women and children develop character, feel good about themselves, and encourage them to be strong and productive in their daily lives. Inspired by the idea of a better future, each of these groups goes out of their way to share their love with the community. As the Editor of Cedar Park City Lifestyle, I am thankful for the opportunity to meet the members of these groups and discover how many lives they have touched. I am also thankful for the time we got to spend with the amazing woman on our cover, April Wallen, who you may know as Mrs. Texas. She shared not only her path in the pageantry world alongside the uplifting women she is happy to call her friends, but also the ways she gives back to the Central Texas foster care community through Austin Angels. Through the lenses of individuals like Wallen, this November issue will teach you about how much dedication goes into serving our city. Perhaps you will even be inspired to take action yourself. Z’TEJAS PUMPK IN CHICK EN ENCHILADAS Serves 4 (2 enchiladas per person)

INGREDIENTS • 8 corn or flour tortillas • 8 oz mixed shredded cheese • 8 oz pumpkin puree • 16 oz cooked chicken, sliced • 8 oz pumpkin enchilada sauce to reheat the chicken • 12 oz pumpkin enchilada sauce

1 cup lime sour cream 1 fresh lime 1 cup roasted pepitas ½ cup cotija cheese For pumpkin enchilada sauce: 1 qt red enchilada sauce, 1 qt pumpkin puree, 2 cups heavy cream

DIRECTIONS In a small saute pan, add cooked chicken with ½ cup of pumpkin enchilada sauce. Stir until chicken and sauce are warmed through. Spread 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree on each tortilla. Divide cheese and chicken evenly between tortillas and roll them. Place in baking dish and bake at 400 degrees for 3-5 minutes. When cheese is melted, place two enchiladas in center bottom of dinner plate. Cover enchiladas with ~1/4 cup of pumpkin enchilada sauce. Top with dollop of sour cream and squeeze of lime. Sprinkle with roasted pepitas and cotija for garnish. Serve with rice and beans.

Z’TEJAS PUMPK IN SPICE M ARTINI Makes 1 drink

INGREDIENTS • 1.5 oz vodka • 4 oz pumpkin martini mix • Brown sugar and cinnamon mix

• Pumpkin spice • 1/2 oz salted caramel pumpkin sauce

DIRECTIONS Stir pumpkin martini mix before using. Coat rim of martini glass with sugar-cinnamon mix. Drizzle caramel sauce inside, rotating glass slowly. Add ice to cocktail shaker, then 4 oz of pumpkin martini mix and the vodka. Shake very hard so foam is formed, then strain it quickly into martini glass. When pouring cocktail, do it swiftly to ensure foam ends up on top. Sprinkle drink with pumpkin spice.

The United States is made up of several generations of patriots. Their heroic actions date back to the founding of our nation. Today, we continue to honor those who have spent their lives protecting ours. “The Cedar Park American Legion Post 911 is a post for and run by veterans, looking to do the most to meet the needs of veterans and their families. We also educate the community about their local veterans, their needs, and their contributions,” says Chaplain Steve Adams. Post 911 achieves its goals by hosting events centered on commemoration and unification. For instance, they have hosted a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony for 21 years to share their respects. They have also honored veterans through the Annual Hunter-Morris Memorial Golf Tournament. “The idea for the golf tournament was a joint effort amongst the board members to come up with a way to fund several scholarships to honor the memory of our fallen members,” says Adams. “Anyone and everyone are allowed to participate, as long as they pay the fee or are sponsored by someone. Several of our veterans have been gifted a sponsorship to play in the tournament.” For the past decade, Post 911 has especially made a name for itself during the Christmas season through Breakfast with Santa. Children enjoy a meal with Santa before having fun at the craft stations, meeting first responders, and climbing the rock wall. Families can put their names into various raffle giveaways. “Each year, on the first Saturday in December, we provide a full outstanding breakfast for the veterans and their families, free of charge. To make this happen, we obtain in-kind donations from local food and drink businesses, as well as financial donations from anyone wanting to support the event,” says Adams. Attend this year’s Breakfast with Santa on December 3rd at YMCA Twin Lakes. Spread the joy of the holidays while thanking local veterans.

Giving How Hill Country Community Ministries has made a difference by serving Central Texas 18

Gene Krider is the Director of Community Engagement at Hill Country Community Ministries, a non-profit organization based in Leander. Alongside the other compassionate members of the organization, he has helped serve those living in poverty and crisis across 100 zip codes. “After many years in corporate America, I had reached a point in my life where I wanted to do more meaningful work and give back to the community,” says Krider. “I had actually supported HCCM through the company I worked with nearly 10 years prior. Through a series of inquiries and irony (God’s intervention), I was presented the opportunity to serve HCCM.” Since being founded in 1983, HCCM has coordinated local involvement to make a real difference in the lives of its neighbors. Its mission is to improve health and well-being, and members have done so with nearly 50,000 individuals in 2022 alone. “It is very comforting to know that we have been in existence serving our community for 40 years,” says Krider. “We started out as a Christmas program for local youths, and today we offer so much more. The need has increased, but our ability to reach more people has grown.” In fact, with the rising cost of living, HCCM has experienced a 35% increase in the number of families that they assist. This means that now, more than ever, it is critical to spread the word about their goals. “I attend many networking events, Chamber of Commerce events, and community resource fairs. My responsibilities include being a brand ambassador and educating the community on who we are, what we offer, and how to connect with us, from getting assistance to referring someone to us to being a part of what we do,” says Krider. “The other aspect of my job is coordinating and facilitating our fundraising and community awareness events.” Krider notes that every person on the team, staff or volunteer, has a servant’s heart. Their hard work and dedication have been evidenced by the food pantry, which feeds approximately 2,300 families every month.

“We choose to serve everyone that visits us with dignity and respect,” says Krider. “The people we serve are at a point in their life where they need help. The assistance we offer provides their basic needs items, like food, clothing, and other resources. But mainly we provide hope that things can get better. Every day, it takes a team of people, from picking up food, preparing food orders, serving the clients, and cleaning up at the end of the day. Staff and volunteers function without missing a beat.” Throughout the year, HCCM hosts and attends events to gain public interest in what they do. Some examples have included CROP Hunger Walks, the Cedar Fest BBQ Cook-Off, and their Star Struck Gala. “Our annual golf tournament is my favorite event simply because I love golf,” says Krider. “But our most rewarding event is our Laces Back to School Shoe Event because the kids’ smiles as they select their shoes are priceless.”

On top of the new shoes, HCCM is home to several programs that specifically cater to the local youth. In particular, they provide school supplies and support a local backpack program. “Youth are dependent on their surroundings and the support they receive to be nurtured and to grow. I feel that by providing some basic needs, we can make a difference in their situation—maybe providing resources they may otherwise not receive,” says Krider. “At the end of the day, I hope it gives them reassurance and hope for a better tomorrow.” Community members of any age, with any size family, can benefit from the work done by HCCM. Some clients even receive clothing vouchers that allow them to go to HCCM’s thrift store and shop for their families. “We all know how quickly kids grow out of clothes. In addition to our vouchers, our thrift store makes simple things

like houseware, furniture, and even toys more affordable for families with limited resources,” says Krider. “We also partner with other agencies. For instance, we donated suitcases to the Leander Police Department Domestic Violence division. We also donate baby furniture items, such as cribs, playpens, strollers, and car seats, to ACTS of Love.” The best advice that Krider has to those wanting to give back is to make it simple. It can be as easy as picking up extra canned vegetables when grocery shopping, volunteering on a weekend, or writing a check for a few dollars to a charity that you believe in.

CALLING ALL GLOWGETTERS... IT’S YOUR TIME TO SHINE! Laura Hartnett, the owner of GlowGal, has been a licensed cosmetologist for over 15 years. During this time, she has also become a mother to five children and has taken the leap of faith in opening up her own salon. We sat down to discuss how GlowGal has simultaneously fulfilled the community and her own life.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND GLOWGAL? GlowGal came about in 2019 when I was going through a very difficult divorce. I was passionate about hair, using my art as therapy. I realized I needed to do something big to care for my family, so I joined forces with my father and GlowGal was born. We even call our customers GlowGetters because I believe that when you feel beautiful, you radiate a glow from the inside out.

IN WHAT WAY WOULD YOU SAY THAT GLOWGAL IS MORE THAN A SALON? We are a movement. Our belief is that we assist you, the client, to feel like you look your best. Through our support, you step out of our doors with the confidence to tackle the next phase of your life. WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE IN OPENING GLOWGAL? Opening a salon amidst the adversity of divorce and a pandemic showed me just how wonderful a community I am fortunate to be a part of. We were set to open in March of 2020, but we were shut down on our opening day. It was a tough time for businesses, and service-based businesses even more so. It was through faith, family, and friends that we are not just here, but thriving!

It’s the ultimate outdoor game-day experience you can enjoy in your own backyard or anywhere you love to gather your team for the season.

Praline Pecan Crunch Snack Mix Ingredients • 8 cups brown sugar or cinnamon cereal squares • 1 cup pecan halves • 1/3 cup light corn syrup • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 3 tablespoons butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 2 cups white chocolate-covered pretzels • 1 cup salted peanuts • 2 packages of large waffle cones or paper bags Instructions 1. Heat oven to 250°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cereal and pecans in pan and set aside. 2. In a 4-cup microwaveable bowl, combine corn syrup, brown sugar and butter spread. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds or until boiling. 3. Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir to coat evenly. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Spread on baking sheet and cool completely; break into pieces. When cooled, add peanuts and pretzels. Makes about 10-11 cups. Store tightly covered.

April Wallen and her husband, Jared, were born and raised in Alaska. After years of enduring long, cold winters, they decided it was time to move somewhere they could bask in the sun’s warmth. Having been welcomed to Texas with open arms, Wallen has now been crowned Mrs. Texas 2022. “I was able to keep my job and work remotely, so we had many options open,” says Wallen. “My husband received an offer from Austin and I had family spread around Texas, so it was an easy decision. We have loved being in Austin for the last five years and it feels

like home now. And we were definitely prepared for the ice storm in early 2021!” Since arriving in Texas, Wallen has continued to pursue her pageantry career. But when she had initially started competing, she had no idea how far it would take her. In fact, her interest stemmed from some friends that wanted to compete in the Mrs. Alaska American pageant. “We decided it would be a fun girls’ weekend,” says Wallen. “I decided to compete at the last minute and had to borrow most of my wardrobe, but it was worth CONTINUED >

it because I ended up winning that year. My experience at the national pageant, Mrs. America, was amazing and I ended up placing in the Top 12, which doesn’t happen frequently for Alaskans.” Wallen thought that her pageant journey would be over after that experience. However, she was looking for ways to make friends with other women in Austin. She was volunteering as a mentor to teens in foster care through Austin Angels when she was inspired to compete again and build more local connections. “My favorite thing is the friendships I have cultivated. Pageant sisters are the best!” says Wallen. “I have met so many authentic women that are doing amazing things in their local communities, while raising families and owning businesses. They have been some of the most supportive friends and it never feels like we are competing against each other.” Through this new wave of pageantry, Wallen has earned the titles of America’s Most Beautiful Mrs. Lone Star 2021 and USOA Mrs. Texas 2022. She is incredibly thankful for the support system of her family and friends. “Jared attends many of the appearances with me as USOA Mrs. Texas,” says Wallen. “I am also a member of a networking group for female business owners and they have been my cheerleaders. There are opportunities where I can help promote their businesses and they help me coordinate fundraising events for Austin Angels.” When Wallen competed for Mrs. Texas, she was judged on four areas—evening gown, swimwear, on-stage question, and interview. Although a big part of her preparation involved fitness, her focus largely went toward showcasing what she does and is grateful for. “The interview is my favorite part of the process. This is where the judges really get to know the contestants and hear about our accomplishments and volunteer work,” says Wallen. “My background

is very colorful and includes overcoming brain cancer, navigating the foster care system as a foster parent, and being a senior manager for Alaska’s largest company. I have been involved in Austin Angels’ Dare to Dream, Love Box, and Angel Alliance programs. So, there’s a lot to discuss during the interview.” Confidence is key, according to Wallen. She believes that anyone who wants to compete in pageantry should focus on what their unique purpose is because that is what makes beauty shine through. Wallen recommends identifying personal goals that go beyond taking home the win. “There is so much power in supporting other women around us. We can help empower each other as women by helping one another reach our goals, leading by example, and lifting up others when they need us,” says Wallen. “We often have hectic lives where we try to balance being a wife, mother, business owner, community volunteer, and so many other roles. Empowering each other can increase our confidence and motivation to keep growing.”
