Dr. Elahe Wissinger has been practicing since 1996, when she graduated from Boston University School of Dental Medicine.

Women Who Inspire!

This issue is dedicated to the women who make things happen around southern Arizona. Like an aesthetician turned small-business owner to a young advertising guru, these ladies are slaying it all across southern Arizona and beyond.

We all have inspiring women in our lives, from mom, an aunt, daughter, sister, or friend, there’s that one (or many) spirit who changed the world around them for the better. Maybe it was a school teacher or a doctor who gave you new hope and inspiration to last a lifetime. Or the friendly neighbor across the street. The memories created by these exceptional people do live on for decades, even after they are long gone. Hopefully your thoughts are filled with their faces, their laugh, a funny saying or a certain look. Savor the memories or drop in for a quick hello. They are to be celebrated and cherished.

REMEMBERING

A Legacy in the Tucson Community and the World of Holistic Health

KARMA KIENTZLER

Karma Kientzler, a pioneering force in holistic health and fitness, passed away on Nov. 11, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona. Over a career spanning more than three decades, she played a pivotal role in transforming Tucson into a hub for wellness and integrative health practices.

Born in 1942, Karma’s journey into the world of health and fitness began early. Her name, “Karma,” would come to symbolize her holistic approach to well-being. She developed a passion for physical fitness and wellness, which led her to pursue a career in the growing field of holistic health.

In 1979, Karma became the founding Fitness Director of Canyon Ranch Health Resort in Tucson. At the time, the concept of a health resort focusing on holistic wellness was revolutionary.

“There really were no places to go if you were already in shape, but wanted to get in better shape,” said Jude McCarthy, Homeowner Services Manager at Canyon Ranch and former coworker of Kientzler’s. “She helped blaze the trail for the health and wellness industry.”

Kientzler was instrumental in shaping Canyon Ranch’s fitness programs, integrating physical exercise with mental and spiritual well-being. Her innovative approach attracted individuals seeking comprehensive health solutions, contributing significantly to the resort’s early success.

Mel Zuckerman, the founder of Canyon Ranch, credited Kientzler with molding the exercise program that became a cornerstone of the resort’s offerings. Without any formal marketing, her

“SHE

“She was a great teacher and inspiration, but she was also very tough,” McCarthy said. “Her message was always, ‘it’s your responsibility, you are the captain of your own ship’.”

In addition to her direct contributions, Kientzler authored fitness programs and materials such as her 1984 VHS program, “Canyon Ranch Fitness Is Fun.” Focused on body contouring, this program is a testament to her commitment to making fitness accessible and enjoyable. These materials have left a lasting imprint on the fitness community, and continue to inspire and guide individuals on their wellness journeys.

Karma Kientzler’s passing marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to the promotion of holistic health and wellness. Her pioneering work at Canyon Ranch set new standards for health resorts, emphasizing the importance of integrating physical fitness with mental and spiritual well-being. Her legacy lives on in the countless individuals and communities she touched, and her influence continues to shape the wellness landscape in Tucson and beyond.

programs drew attention and clientele purely through word of mouth, highlighting their effectiveness and appeal. Her dedication and vision helped establish Canyon Ranch as a leader in the wellness industry, influencing countless other health resorts and fitness programs nationwide.

Beyond her work at Canyon Ranch, Karma was deeply involved with the University of Arizona Arthritis Center. As an advisory board member, she played a crucial role in integrating fitness and holistic health practices into arthritis treatment and management. She regularly participated in the center’s annual conferences, sharing her expertise on topics such as “Movement as Medicine” and “The Healing Power of Breath.” Her presentations emphasized the importance of physical activity and mindfulness in managing chronic conditions, offering patients alternative strategies to improve their quality of life.

“Die young as late as possible.” A quote she lived by and preached to others.

Kientzler inspired a generation of fitness professionals and wellness enthusiasts in Tucson and beyond. Her holistic approach to health—recognizing the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit—has become a standard in modern wellness practices.

Former colleagues and clients remember her not only for her professional expertise but also for her personal mentorship.

DANIELLE MOSER STEPS FORWARD FROM PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT TO MED SPA OWNER

REINS IN HAND

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRITTA VAN VRANKEN PHOTOGRAPHY
Dream Team from left to right: Haley, then Melissa, Danielle, Valeria, and Heidi

Danielle Moser is a board-certified physician assistant with 27 years of experience working early on in the emergency room at St. Mary's Hospital, at Skin Spectrum, and later at Maloney Plastic Surgery. “When I started out, aesthetic medicine was in its infancy, and Botox was not yet FDA-

business owner. I believe everything we're supposed to do in life is shown to us and ends up right in front of us, so I was waiting for the right opportunity. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, professionally and personally. I am so fortunate to be surrounded by excellent clinicians

approved. It was a very exciting time with a steep learning curve. I was able to train with industry leaders during this time.

Here is the Q-and-A with Danielle Moser, the new owner of Facial Artistry & Aesthetics:

How did this change come about?

Two days after leaving Mahoney Plastic Surgery, Dr. Barry Kusman asked if we could meet. He was considering retiring from his Facial Artistry & Aesthetics practice but was looking for the perfect person to take over. We realized that we had a lot of like-minded goals. We strongly believe in collaborating with each patient to formulate a customized plan to achieve their beauty best. He thought I would be a great person to take over his patients. Six weeks later, on February 1, I took over this elegant, state-of-the-art practice.

Did you foresee this opportunity a year ago?

A year ago, I was very content being an employee. I had a lot of autonomy at Maloney Plastic Surgery and enjoyed my free time. But I had constantly been reading and thinking I would like to be a

and industry partners who helped me navigate all the details so I can spend time doing what I love most…seeing patients.

What changes have you experienced when you go from medical provider physician assistant to med spa owner with her name on the door? The owner!

After 27 years as a physician assistant, transitioning to business owner has been a significant change. Now, I manage products, representatives, payroll, and marketing, and an array of treatments such as filler and Botox injections, Potenza, Radio Frequency Microneedling, and various laser treatments. While I enjoy these tasks, I am focused on one-on-one patient interactions and creating personalized treatment plans to enhance natural beauty and well-being. I'm grateful to live my dream. My goal is to provide the highest quality care to the community.

What has been the biggest surprise? How has the whole first month panned out?

I've been pleasantly surprised by the community's outreach, especially from other practices that do what I do. Instead

of seeing me as the competition, they've been helpful and kind, offering excellent advice as friends. Our first month went exceptionally well; I’m proud of our staff. I also couldn’t have done it without the help of knowledgeable professionals in the field, a dedicated friend group, and, of course, my husband. I jokingly tell him that being a surgeon is now his side hustle because he spends weekends helping me bring this vision forward!

What makes your med spa stand out from others in the area?

Facial Artistry & Aesthetics is intentionally intimate and detail-oriented. Two select providers and I offer concierge-level service. I feel so fortunate to live my dream of creating highly personalized treatment plans that enhance each client’s natural beauty and optimize their overall well-being. We go the extra mile to meet our patients' needs and are planning community outreach projects and a series of speakers at the forefront of aesthetic medicine.

How have you balanced your passion for aesthetics with your business responsibilities?

Finding balance is challenging, as it feels like I’ve just given birth, and I have to take care of my new baby. LOL! I surround myself with our bright, experienced staff and support team to prioritize state-ofthe-art care. I’m committed to growing my knowledge and turning to professionals and resources for the latest products and techniques. My employees, friends, and family support allow me to focus on what I love most—seeing patients in an outstanding practice.

The Grand Opening Celebration Begins!
Shari with Pavise
“I THINK THE TIMING HAS BEEN PERFECT, AND THIS IS PRECISELY WHAT I WAS MEANT TO DO AT THIS TIME IN MY LIFE.”

What role does the local community play in your business success?

This question nearly brings a tear to my eye. The Foothills community and the people of Tucson have welcomed me warmly. Many returning patients have sought me out, and we receive four or five calls daily from excited patients who’ve found my new location. As a business owner, I can now focus my time and finances on local projects that make a difference in our community like Angel Charity for Children, and the Boys & Girls Club of Tucson.

Looking back on your journey, how have you changed or grown since becoming a new owner?

I think the primary way I’ve shifted focus is to be more of a visionary, and I have learned a great deal of resilience. I’ve learned so much quickly and can run the office independently if needed— though I hope I never have to! I’ve developed resilience and know to expect the unexpected, often being pleasantly surprised by others.

If you could give your past self some advice about opening the med spa… What would you say?

I would say, “Why didn’t you do this sooner?” Ha! Ha! I think the timing has been perfect, and this is precisely what I was meant to do at this time in my life.

RAY RAY'S Whistle

WETTER

It’s your choice

After Rachel (Ray Ray) Dacquisto graduated from Mountain View High School, she set out to find her passion. After a few years in college in Phoenix, she spent 10 years in the Bay Area working in just about every hospitality job, from dishwasher to certified sommelier.

"Northern California was my coming of age," in the beverage industry, she said, In San Francisco, Ray was drawn to the flavors and smells of the beverages she created and poured. Along the way, she created some fantastic signature drinks that friends and clients would return to enjoy time and again.

Today, one of her beverages is making a mark back home in Tucson: Ray Ray's Sonoran Spirit Tea!  Ray carefully blends black and hibiscus tea, a smidge of agave sweetener, vodka, citrus flavors, and a spritz of bubbles. It's a low alcohol (4.7%) drink she describes as "light, refreshing, thirst quenching.  Not too sweet, not too

fruity, not even too much tea." And it's not a malted beverage like hard ciders. The tea is distilled."

Her spirit teas were a hit! Today, she produces roughly 1,000 gallons of her spirit tea a month.

But it's been a long three years of mastering her craft, growing her distribution across Arizona, managing logistics, sourcing capital, and making sure her young daughters (then three months old and three at the start) and dad had something to eat in the car while she was meeting with a potential client in a bar or restaurant.

One prospective reseller would have makers line up with other beverage makers, and it could be hours before her turn to pitch. "One time, I had to order a pizza for them while they waited in the car." They had books to read, coloring pads, and other things to pass the time.

Her husband, aunts, friends, and neighbors all provide the emotional and personal support needed to pull something like this off. Her tribe is her focus group: tasters, logo reviewers, website editors, and emotional support team.

With her recipes proofed out, Ray started her first round of production. "I bought some kegs with the money in my pocket," she said. When those kegs were filled and then sold wholesale to local bars, she'd buy a few more kegs. One batch at a time. This year, her spirit teas are handled by a professional distributor that delivers statewide.

But getting to this point was, time and again, marked by long days and nights learning the basics of scaling her business. "I found mentors through

WE'RE TURNING A passion PROJECT INTO A business . TUCSON HAS REALLY SHOWN UP for us!

Start-Up Tucson and began the project," expanding her knowledge, including ways to secure working capital -- "a few small grants" -- and even safety testing at a University of Arizona food lab that helped assess the optimal handling of a consumer product from start to finish.

A major milestone came when she found a more secure perch to build her teas at Thunder Canyon Brewery on Broadway downtown. Steve Tracy, founder of the iconic craft brew spot, offered her space to work on her product. After 27 years as a staple in the local craft beer community, Tracy retired a year ago, turning over his brewery to employees who now own it.

After COVID, Ray was on a mission to get her teas into the hands of future fans. She would set up a tasting table at AJ's Fine Foods, farmers markets, and other locations. People encouraged her to keep going, and she did.

Today, brewery owners James Owens (former general manager of Thunder Canyon) and Michael Nixon (former

head brewer) invest heavily in time and equipment to help Ray produce increasingly large batches of canned tea. On a sunny morning last month, Dixon was a dervish, flying around pallets of empty cans and a fast-paced production line that, in a few hours, would crank out more than 4,000 cans of the original spirit tea as well as a new prickly pear variety.

"My parents have always been so supportive of me," Ray recalled, adding that her circle of friends and collaborators at the downtown brewery are incredible allies. "We are supported, and it is reciprocated," Ray said. "Tucson has really shown up for us!"

Her attention is now focused on broadening her reach with Swift Distribution. Flagstaff has been a massive market for her line of refreshing drinks. She says it's a lifestyle product sought by rock climbers, skiers, and mountain bikers who want an adult beverage that is flavorful, crisp, light, and doesn't make you feel bloated.

Ray works in the back of the brewery, testing a new style made with green tea, surrounded by massive brewery stills and vats and a workbench with vials, beakers, and notepads.

"We're turning a passion project into a business," Ray said. "I'm focused on earning a living and watching it grow."

Empowering Women Through Healing

Tao Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine Combines Western and Eastern Healing Arts

Nestled in the heart of Tucson, Tao Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine is more than just a wellness clinic—it’s a sanctuary where women support and uplift one another through the art of holistic healing. Founded and led by Katrina Jingya Jiang, L.Ac, Dipl. O.M., MBA, this women-led team is dedicated to providing compassionate, holistic care that nurtures both the body and mind.

Katrina didn’t set out to build a women-led practice, but she sees its more profound significance in hindsight. “Every practitioner I’ve hired has brought with her a deep, intuitive ability to care, listen, and hold space for patients. Women naturally bring a nurturing presence to the healing arts, which resonates powerfully in this field,” she explains.

As a mother, wife, and business owner, Katrina approaches wellness with a heart-centered lens. She understands women's silent burdens—balancing careers, motherhood, and personal well-being. “Becoming a mother has made me more patient, compassionate, and attuned to emotional undercurrents. I listen not just to words but to what the body is trying to say.”

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO WOMEN'S HEALTH

Tao Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine offers a range of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) modalities, including acupuncture, cupping, TuiNa massage, and herbal consultation. These therapies work synergistically to

address common women’s health concerns, such as migraines, hormonal imbalances, fertility challenges, and chronic stress. “Many don’t realize how deeply stress affects the body—it amplifies pain, disrupts digestion, and even alters fertility. Our approach focuses on calming the nervous system and restoring balance,” says Katrina.

Huixiang He, L.Ac, Dipl. O.M., specializes in acupuncture and TuiNa massage, blending these techniques to support patients through pain and stress management. “Different bodies respond uniquely to acupuncture and TuiNa. For those who don’t respond as well to one, the other can provide incredible relief,” she explains.

Massage therapist C’Ne, a Reiki practitioner, further enhances the clinic’s holistic approach. “Reiki and medical massage complement each other beautifully. Reiki helps balance the body's energy flow, while massage releases muscular tension. Together, they provide both physical relief and emotional restoration,” she shares.

WOMEN EMPOWERING WOMEN

Beyond the treatment room, Tao Acupuncture fosters a space of trust, safety, and empowerment. “To me, women’s empowerment means recognizing and embracing our unique strengths—and using them with purpose,” says Katrina. “Whether it’s leading with empathy, listening deeply, or balancing intuition with intellect, we celebrate the full spectrum of what it means to be a woman.”

This philosophy extends to the clinic’s patients, many busy women juggling multiple roles. Katrina encourages them to prioritize selfcare without guilt. “If you don’t care for yourself, your body will eventually demand your attention. Self-care isn’t indulgent—it’s responsible. When we show up for ourselves, we show up better for everyone else.”

One particularly inspiring patient story stands out to Katrina—a woman struggling with chronic migraines and fertility challenges. “Over several months of consistent treatment, her migraines faded, and she later conceived naturally. Witnessing her transformation—both physically and emotionally—was incredibly moving.”

I have personally experienced the transformative effects of Katrina’s expertise. Her deep knowledge, compassionate approach, and skillful treatments have provided me with a level of relief I hadn’t found elsewhere. As someone deeply invested in fitness and holistic health, I’ve explored many healing modalities, but Katrina’s work stands out. Her ability to address both the physical and emotional layers of wellness is remarkable, making her practice an invaluable resource for anyone seeking true healing.

A MESSAGE FOR WOMEN THIS MOTHER’S DAY

With Mother’s Day approaching, Katrina and her team honor the strength and resilience of women everywhere. “We are privileged to support women at every stage of life. There’s something sacred about holding space for other women—listening to their stories, easing their pain, and guiding them toward balance,” she reflects.

Her message to women striving to maintain their health? “You are the heart of your home, your community, your world. There is only one you—irreplaceable and extraordinary. Please take care of yourself, not just for others, but for you. Because when you thrive, everything around you blossoms.”

And that is healing in its truest form.

In 2013, Lindsay Thomae took a leap of faith, launching Thomae Advertising with nothing but a vision and determination. Twelve years later, her boutique agency has become a strategic powerhouse by forging genuine and trusted relationships. A native of Tucson, Thomae’s deep ties to the community influence her agency's approach, which emphasizes authentic connections as the foundation of success. This client-centric focus has cultivated strong, enduring partnerships across various regions, from local businesses to national brands.

Thomae Advertising crafts narratives that resonate. " We give brands a voice,” Thomae said, “so our clients can focus on why they’re in business, their sweet spot .”

EMPOWERING THROUGH EXAMPLE

Thomae's entrepreneurial spirit is fueled by more than business ambition—her role as a mother drives it. Her daughter, Ava, is her primary inspiration, “She drives my sense of purpose and ultimate desire to set a powerful example as a female business owner,” Thomae said. This personal motivation shapes her leadership, promoting a culture of empowerment for both her team and her clients. “I’m all for creating a safe and inclusive environment that encourages collaboration and fosters trust.” This commitment extends beyond her agency's walls, permeating every client relationship.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

Mike Belatti, COO of Arby’s (Irish Beef, LLC), shared his experience working with Thomae Advertising, “Lindsay and her team have been instrumental in crafting a compelling narrative that tells the broader story of who we are and what we do. From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings. As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language. In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.

“Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance.”

Flower Frogs

Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

“Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.”

Florals and Fruit

“Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.”

Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

Hanging Florals

For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.

No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.

DIY DAY

INSPIRATION FOR A MOTHER/ DAUGHTER DIY DAY

WITH MOM

An afternoon spent together is priceless with today’s busy schedules. Instead of going out, staying in can provide quaint, quiet one-on-one time for a mother and daughter (or multiple daughters). Finding time on calendars is the hard part, and filling that time is all fun from there. Here are a few favorite ideas for inspiration that may spark excitement for planning those special times together.

01 Charm Necklaces

Custom DIY charm necklaces and bracelets are trending. Gather a theme idea: birthstones, family initials, travels or even favorite hobbies, and procure charms from your local craft store or online shop. Selecting charms for each other also could be a fun way to bring delight to the crafting occasion. Necklaces and bracelets can be made for each other, or as future gifts for upcoming occasions such as a family wedding, a birthday milestone or an anniversary.

02 Interview Journaling

Storytelling makes for the best memories. Structure memory recall by filming or journaling interview-style question-and-answer sessions, cataloging information for future generations. Videos and notes with detailed family adventures are priceless, and we all always wish we had more of them.

03 Meal Prep

Text conversations around kitchen tips or ingredient procurement seem endless. Spend some time together in the kitchen preparing favorite family recipes, sharing Mom’s best tips and tricks. Choosing freezer-friendly meals is a great way to walk away with meals for upcoming busy days. There’s nothing like Mom’s recipes!
