Every year the arrival of March triggers the itch to explore. At least for me.

Maybe it is all the memories of Spring Break at the University of Arizona, exploring remote campsites along the Sea of Cortez, Rocky Point, or ski trips up north. Or those trips deeper into Mexico and Central America with our young family.

The Catalina Foothills, Then & Now ARTICLE BY STEPHEN BROWNING

Long before well-known developments like La Paloma, Ventana, La Encantada, and the LDS Temple, there was only raw public trust land, used primarily for cattle grazing. The Catalina Foothills, 44.6 square miles of scenic Sonoran desert, sitting at an elevation of 2500 feet, was described by naysayers as a “worthless desert hillside” with any talk of development pure “folly”. What we now know, of course, is that this area was to become one of Arizona’s most affluent, upscale, and desirable residential and commercial centers, with a population nearing 54,000.

What is well known, but sometimes overlooked, is that it was the initial vision and passion of John and Helen Murphy that spawned what many refer to today as the gem of Greater Tucson. By 1928, they owned a 7,000 tract that comprised all the land north of River Road, between Oracle and Sabino Canyon. After almost losing it all in the stock market crash

the following year, they engaged Swiss architect Josias Joesler in the early 30s to help them create the first master-planned community, Catalina Foothills Estates, near the intersection of what were then dirt roads, Campbell Avenue and River Road.

Originally hoping to have Joesler design a private chapel for family worship, they chose to build a small church instead, which became the Spanish Colonial wonder, St. Philips in the Hills, an Episcopal Church now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The area continued to develop over the next two decades, with estate subdivisions popping up north and south of Ina Road and along major north-south corridors of Swan, Campbell, and 1st. My family was among the thousands who moved into newly-build custom homes during that period. Sun lovers to a

fault, my parents decided to move us from the seasonally dreary Northwest to Tucson in the mid-60s, building a home in Vista de la Candelas, a new development of one-acre estate homes that spread eastward from 1st Avenue, just south of Ina Road.

Local shopping was available at the Casas Adobes Plaza, built

by Italian immigrants Sam and Giaconda Nanini in 1948, located at the western edge of the foothills, on the Southwest corner of Oracle Road and Ina Road.

The 50s and 60s drew tourists to the area when famed Tucson artists Ted DeGrazia opened his Gallery in the Sun off Swan Road, built in stages between 1951-1965. By the late 1950s, Westward Look Resort had established itself as a desert celebrity mecca, hosting Hollywood royalty like John Wayne and Vivian Leigh.

Originally a rustic dude ranch, Westward Look blossomed into one of the first high-glam foothills resorts. Later, newer destinations like the La Paloma Resort, Ventana Canyon Resort, and Canyon Ranch opened, putting the Catalina Foothills firmly on the map as one of the country’s most appealing all-season hospitality and spa havens.

What was to become the first country club in the foothills opened in 1963. Originally called Skyline Country Club and Resort, the steel-framed, ultra-modern clubhouse, designed by former military officer turned architect, David Fraker, was built high up on a 600-acre development and became a magnet for show-biz legends Frank

Sinatra, Joe Namath, and Ann-Margret, hosting some of the nation’s top golf competitions.

While being one of the state’s most desirable high-end residential and commercial hubs, the Catalina Foothills has never strayed too far away from the Murphy’s original dream of a low-density community, featuring natural desert vegetation and terrain, with a true Sonoran vibe. THE CROWN JEWEL OF DOWNTOWN IS GOING BIG!

Plans for the transformational development of the Fox Theatre complex on the corner of Stone and Congress were announced last October. The final purchase of the properties to be redeveloped was completed earlier this year, with an announcement on a campaign coming soon that will fund an expanded lobby connecting to the theatre, as well as new food and beverage facilities, and meeting and event space.

We sat down with Fox executive director Bonnie Schock to get her perspective on this huge project.

Now that the property for the expansion has been secured, and prior to the formal kick-off of the capitol campaign, how can area patrons, donors, and friends best participate in actively supporting the theatre?

We’re thrilled at the enthusiasm people are showing as we’ve shared this big, bold vision for an expanded Fox Tucson Theatre! Much of the work of the project and even of the capital campaign is behind the scenes for a while longer. First

How do you see the expansion bringing new value and energy to our downtown's ongoing renewal?

The Fox has been called the crown jewel of Tucson. Rightly so. As today’s downtown Tucson grows and evolves, we know that the arts lead the way. The corner of Stone and Congress is the very heart of our City. This investment in an expanded Fox places creativity, community, gathering, and togetherness at the center for the long term.

On a personal note, you received your M.F.A. in Stage Directing. How have you been able to incorporate the creative and artistic elements of your background in your current administrative role?

Too often the arts are considered as something ‘over there’ and outside our reach. But, the truth is humans are making things each and every day. My own work has always consisted of shaping experiences, community connections, spaces, and places. As an organizational leader, the context of that work has shifted from an individual production to an institutional and community-wide scale. Ultimately, I believe in togetherness and the transformational power of shared experience, and that is at the very heart of special places like the Fox Tucson.

in popularity. The organic look is trending with these, and vessel sinks carved out of stone add a unique touch.

Walk-in showers and “wet rooms” – an open concept shower and bath area – are the newest ways customers are modernizing their bathrooms.

An unexpected pandemic bathroom trend has risen as well: the Washlet. Yes, we’re talking about toilets!

Produced by Toto, the Washlet comes equipped with a remote-controlled electronic bidet. Begay said that the toilet paper shortage during the pandemic caused bidets to surge in popularity as a sustainable and energy-saving alternative, a trend she says has yet to die down..

Freestanding tubs in a variety of materials are also soaring off the sales floor, but added benefits like jets point toward a larger health trend.

“A lot of those things help with blood circulation, sore muscles, just overall well-being,” Begay said.

Begay and Blakley aren’t just interested in the well-being of their customers, though. They care about the well-being of Tucson too, and Benjamin Supply Company is involved with many philanthropic efforts throughout the city.

Setting the trend for sustainability, the Burman family set up shop in the historic Tucson Warehouse and Transfer Building, which was constructed in 1918, and ultimately saved the building from being torn down for a roadway. While the family owned the business, they donated supplies, money, and time to organizations like Habitat for Humanity and to refurbish St. Luke’s Home, a local assisted living community.

Blakley said that with their new ownership, they’re looking for passion projects to invest back into the community. She said that Tucson has a culture of giving, and they’re looking to form volunteer teams to assist locally-controlled 501(c)3 nonprofits. Ramping up their sustainability efforts, she said that a program is in the works to prevent waste from going in the landfill by donating scrapped parts to local artists. On top of their extensive recycling efforts, they hope to see their waste reimagined into beautiful art pieces once this program launches.

Not only is Benjamin Plumbing Supply a trusted and longstanding business in the Tucson community, it’s one that understands the importance of giving back. Many of its employees are either Tucson natives or longtime residents, and they see the value in working to improve their area alongside their customers’ homes.

“We have an imprint on this town,” Blakley said.

It all started in a basement. Now, they’re getting ready to embark on their first tour.

Sebastian Driver, Dylan Goode, Brandon Pors, and Alex Sciortino are proud to call themselves a band that no one’s ever heard of. And yet, they’ve taken the Tucson music scene by storm. They pack 191 Toole with over 400 people. They won the Battle of the Bands at Dusk while playing their third-ever concert. They’re getting ready to release their first EP. Before that, they had a 10x10 basement and a dream.

Their journey began in 2021. Driver and Goode were members of a fraternity at the University of Arizona, where Pors was pledging. After Driver made him prove that he could play the guitar, they had regular jam sessions in Goode's basement.

Taking influence ranging from Grateful Dead to punk rock, they said that finding their sound has been an ongoing process.

“At first, it was a horrible blend! But we could tell there was something there,” Driver, the band’s singer and rhythm guitarist, said.

There was just one concern: their bassist couldn’t play the bass. Goode, who had briefly played the guitar, committed himself to learning the instrument and fell in love with it. He said that although it was challenging to start an instrument, his bandmates were there to help him out.

“It’s kinda lit because we have built the perfect bassist,” Sciortino said.

The band geared up for their first ever performance at UA Unplugged, a showcase of student musicians. They called up Sciortino to play the drums and rocked out on the mall.

The Basements had an audience.

Although they were used to playing for their friends, a large crowd was an entirely different experience.

“We were like, ‘Oh, people like us! This is neat,’” Sciortino said.

Fast-forward to now, and The Basements have become an established facet of the local music scene.

What sets them apart is their drive to DIY everything – from producing their own concerts to recording all of their music in-house. They said that doing it themselves allows them to preserve their vision, and artists they’ve connected with are there to offer advice when needed.

These connections, Sciortino said, have made them really grateful for the Tucson community. One of their greatest successes as a band has been their friendships with other musicians, whose diverse sounds keep them inspired.

“I am really really proud of some of the new music we’ve got in the works,” Sciortino said.

Their EP, Broken Escalators are Stairs, is set to launch the same time as their first tour, kicking off in Tucson on March 2. Featuring new songs like Doctor Dirty and No Fly Zone, it also comes with a promise from Goode that their music will “take you on a journey.”

The bandmates agree that Goode’s basement has changed their lives completely. It’s safe to say that The Basements are no longer just University of Arizona students.

“It’s changed every aspect of my life. I think about music all the time at this point,” Goode said.

Although many people leave their college town after they graduate, The Basements have decided to stay in the community that welcomed them. They hope to release an album following their EP and have their sights set on a future cross-country tour.

In the meantime, you can find them in the basement.

Weeknights at Home Recipes for modern comfort without ever leaving the house

Ciabatta with Shrimp, Basil and Arugula It's food cooked in a homestyle way that provides a nostalgic or sentimental value. Comfort food can really be anything, but what's important is that it is comforting to you.

Try these quick and simple recipes at home and enjoy a lovely meal sure to leave both your heart and your belly happy.

INGREDIENTS: • 1 loaf of ciabatta bread, halved horizontally • 3 tablespoons olive oil, extra for drizzle • 2 garlic cloves,1 halved and 1 chopped

• 2 shallots thinly sliced • 1 pound extra large shrimp, peeled, deveined and sliced in half lengthwise • 6 tomatoes, chopped • 1/4 cup pinot grigio wine • 1/4 cup broth • 3 tablespoons basil, chopped • 2 ounces arugula, chopped • 4 ounces Mascarpone cheese

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 400F. Arrange bread halves on a baking dish, drizzle with oil and bake until golden, approximately 13 minutes. After baking, rub bread with the halved garlic.

FOR TOPPING: Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a pan. Sauté shallots and chopped garlic, cooking until soft, about 2 minutes. Add shrimp, season with salt and pepper. Cook approximately 3 minutes until just turning pink. Do not overcook. Remove the shrimp and add the tomatoes to the pan. Cook at medium heat until they start to soften, about 4 minutes.

Raise the temperature to high and add the wine. With a spoon, scrape any bottom bits stuck on the pan and boil for 2 minutes. Add the broth and boil until almost evaporated.

Remove the pan from the heat, add the shrimp, basil, arugula and mascarpone. Stir until creamy. Layer onto the ciabatta and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Grilled Ribeye Steaks with Caper Salsa INGREDIENTS:

FOR SALSA: • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 3 tablespoons balsamic Vinegar • 1/4 cup capers, drained • 12 ounces roasted red bell pepper, sliced thin • 12 ounces roasted yellow bell pepper, sliced thin • 3 tablespoons chopped basil • salt and pepper FOR STEAKS • 4 ribeye steaks, 8 ounces, 1 1/2 inches thick for each • 2 tablespoons Herbs de Provence

SALSA: Mix all ingredients until well coated.

STEAKS: Heat grill. Season steaks with salt and Herbs de Provence. Drizzle with oil and grill 4-6 mins on each side for medium- rare. After cooking, allow the steaks to rest 5 minutes covered loosely with foil, and serve topped with the salsa.

Caramel Apple Bombs INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • •

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced 6 tablespoons light brown sugar, divided 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 30 caramels, divided 2 tablespoons heavy cream All purpose flour for dusting 1 recipe Milk and Honey Dinner Rolls unbaked

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350F. Butter an 8x8 inch pan with 2 tablespoons of butter.

Combine apples, 2 tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon in a medium bowl. Set aside. Unwrap caramels and cut 18 of them into quarters.

Flatten each dough ball into a 3 inch circle. Add 1 tablespoon apple mixture and 6 of the cut caramel pieces.

Carefully pull each side over and roll into a ball, making sure you can’t see through. Place the dough balls in the prepared dish seam side down. Brush with the remaining melted butter and sprinkle them with the remaining sugar. Bake the bombs for 30-35 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and no longer doughy.

Place the remaining 12 caramels and the heavy cream in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave until melted, 30 seconds at a time, stirring after each interval. Once smooth, set aside to cool. To serve, remove the bombs from the oven and drizzle with the Caramel sauce.

Milk and Honey Dinner Rolls INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •

5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and divided 4 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast 1 1/2 cups warm milk 1/4 cup honey 3 1/2-4 cups bread flour, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons Kosher salt

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 9 X 13-inch baking pan with 1 tablespoon of the melted butter.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine yeast, warm milk and honey. Swirl the mixture with a spoon to dissolve the yeast and let rest for 5 minutes. Add 3 tablespoons butter and 3 1/2 cups of the flour and mix on low until smooth. If needed, add 1/2 cup more of flour to form a soft dough. Add the salt and knead on medium high speed for about 3 minutes. The dough should be a little sticky.

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured countertop. Divide into 12 pieces and roll each of the pieces into balls.
