LIFESTYLE LETTER
It's Time to Rock (and Gem) in Tucson This month our fair city will host two iconic events: the Tucson Jazz Festival followed by the Tucson Gem & Mineral show. So prepare to rock (sorry)! The Tucson Jazz Festival kicks off Jan. 13th with Joshua Redman and continues through January 22nd with live shows in just about every venue downtown. This robust and growing series of events -- sponsored by HSL Properties -- is now a major gathering on the international jazz scene. See the complete schedule on page 14. Then, prepare for our annual binge of endless rocks, rugs, international arts, gems, and even a few fine minerals. The annual gem & mineral show will again take over our city across every hotel and convention space from Jan. 21 and well into February. According to the Tucson Gem & Mineral Society, the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show®, founded in 1955, is the largest, oldest, and most prestigious gem and mineral show in the world. The group notes that the gem show "has enjoyed international stature since the 1970s, and was the first gem and mineral show to bring the hobby enthusiast, the public, and the curator/professionals together for discovery and discussion. Our purpose is to encourage interest and study in geology, mineralogy, lapidary, and allied earth sciences." So if you are looking for a new meteorite, fossilized fish, or endless rows of beads and bobbles, then get on out there! But wait, there's more! The Fort Lowell Soccer Shootout will bring more than 5,000 young soccer players to town starting Friday, Jan. 13th, and will continue through the weekend. Most of the action will be at the Kino Sports Complex on east Ajo Way. So, yes, things are going to be jam-packed this month as folks from all over the country (and world), descend on southern Arizona. These events pump much-needed revenue into our recovering tourism industry. Let's show our visitors the friendly side of our old pueblo! Thank you. Rock on Tucson! business monthly A round-up of exciting news from local businesses.
Downtown "Pop-Up" Retail Space Now Open The first wave of retailers is moving into a large shared marketplace under one roof, making it faster and easier for them to get their products to local consumers without massive investments and commitments to launch in "traditional" retail spaces, according to founder Krystal Popov. The Proper Shops at 300 E. Congress St. are available for relatively short terms and modest monthly rates. This venture follows on the heels of Popov's launch of The L Offices, with locations downtown and at Campbell Ave. and River Rd.
New Rebates for Energy-Saving Home Improvements Tucson Electric Power has expanded its offering of rebates to improve energy efficiency in homes, apartments, and businesses. These are on top of existing rebates of up to $900 to replace older residential HVAC units, as well as rebates for things including duct sealing, air-conditioner tune-ups, efficient pool pumps, smart thermostats, shade trees and water heaters. TEP will offer new rebates for attic insulation and air sealing to encourage homeowners to upgrade to R43rated insulation.
Tucson Metro Chamber Receives Top-Tier Accreditation from U.S. Chamber The Tucson Metro Chamber recently received a five-star accreditation for work on local policies and driving positive impact to the community. The recognition is from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This means the local chamber is now fully accredited, an assessment and validation based on an extensive review of the organization. In order to receive accreditation, a chamber must meet minimum standards in their operations and programs, including areas of governance, government affairs, communications, staffing, and technology.

TOHONO CHUL – STILL GROWING IN ALL DIRECTIONS ARTICLE BY STEPHEN BROWNING
With roots, so to speak, going back to the 20s and 30s, Tohono Chul Gardens, Galleries and Bistro, located at the western edge of the Catalina Foothills, first started taking its current form in the late 60s when benefactors Richard and Jean Wilson began turning this desert green space into what is today almost 50 acres of Tucson’s most popular and charming attractions for locals and out-of-towners alike. In addition to 11 identified garden areas, guests can also visit onsite shops and galleries that include a permanent collection of over 450 Southwest-themed items, works of contemporary local artists, regional cookbooks, spicy Southwest foods and condiments, Native American crafts, and a Greenhouse and retail shop featuring hardy desert and arid-adapted plants, decorative planters and yard art. Although open to all, park guests can take a break from the delight of strolling through acres of languid, landscaped pathways to have a snack, coffee or brunch at the charming Garden Bistro located near the entrance. Featuring both indoor and outdoor seating and open from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., the eaterie features creative versions of Sonorazona specialties like short rib flautas with, “Red Chile Sauce, Avocado Crema, Cotija, Local Micro Greens & House Salsa” as an example. More traditional brunch items, like salads and egg dishes, are also on the extensive menu.

O PE N H OU SE | LOCAL SERVI CE S
The current park was formally dedicated in April of 1985 and continues to grow and expand, as it will again beginning in 2023 with the addition of the Children’s Museum Oro Valley (see box). For locals, don’t forget their hugely successful twice-a-year plant sales held in spring and fall, featuring local, desert-tolerant and cold-hardy plants propagated especially for our unique Tucson climate. As landscape architect and executive director Jamie Maslyn Larson describes it, “I see Tohono Chul as not just a garden showcasing beauty, but also as a place of community for a common purpose: to share and preserve the authenticity of the Sonoran Desert and its culture. Thinking of the garden as a venue in this way redefines “must see” into something we hope feels more welcoming, participatory, and engaging.” Authentic, must-see are both descriptions many feel after their most recent visit to Tohono Chul, whether it be for the first time, or as a repeat fan introducing new inductees into the club. Tohono Chul Gardens, Galleries and Bistro, 7366 Paseo del Norte, open daily from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July). Hours may vary, so be sure to check their website at www.TOHONOCHUL.org or call 520-742-6455 to confirm.
Children’s Museum Oro Valley moves to Tohono Chul! Beginning this month, the Children’s Museum of Oro Valley (CMOV) will take up permanent residence embedded on the grounds of Tohono Chul, featuring indoor and outdoor exhibits, daily activities and programming designed specifically for kids and their families. Entry into the museum is included in regular garden admission. Current CMOV membership will be honored through June, 2023. For more information, visit their website at www.ChildrensMuseumTucson.org or call them at 520-792-9985.

Standing thousands of feet above Tucson, Mount Lemmon offers a chilly getaway from the Arizona heat. The crisp air and gorgeous snowfall make this not-so-hidden gem the perfect destination for a weekend adventure. We highlighted our favorite places and activities to keep in mind as you craft your wintry itinerary. The scenic drive on Mount Lemmon Highway is dotted with places to pull over and take in the natural beauty of the area. Sitting around 7,000 feet, the Windy Point Vista pullout offers a stunning birds-eye view of the city and is an ideal location for photos. Mount Lemmon is known for being home to all things outdoors. Their many hiking trails will allow you to explore the forest scenery and stretch your legs after the twisty drive up. According to alltrails.com, the most popular route is the Aspen Trail and Marshall Gulch Loop Trail. This 4.2-mile excursion is ranked moderate on the website’s scale and offers stunning views of the mountain’s natural beauty. NOTE: Always check the forest-service website to see which trails are open. QAs well, new trails are being added and others retired. Sitting at the top of the Catalinas is Mount Lemmon, Summerhaven, and Ski Valley. This is the ideal local destination for winter sports lovers. Ski Valley doesn’t make its own snow, so its ski season is entirely dependent on the conditions of the mountain. Some years the slopes have opened for skiing as early as October. Other years it doesn't open at all for snowsports. Even if there’s no snow on the ground, there’s still plenty to do! Open year-round, Ski Valley offers scenic rides on its ski lift, hiking trails, ski, and snowboard rentals, and lessons for all ages. When you’re ready for a break on the slopes, stop by the Motherlode Gift Shop for their memorable collection of souvenirs. Summerhaven might be small, but this town still offers plenty of unique places to shop. The Mt. Lemmon General Store is stocked with adorable trinkets, delicious homemade fudge, and all the camping supplies you need. According to their website, they even offer a webcam to track road conditions. Getting hungry? Visit the Mt. Lemmon Cookie Cabin and try one of their delicious plate-sized cookies. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, this family-owned restaurant serves up pizzas as well. Their pet-friendly patio will ensure that no member of the family is left behind in the fun. Much has changed on the mountaintop. If you have not been to Summerhaven for a few years you might be surprised by the

extensive rebuilding of homes and businesses, and careful forestry in the area, activities driven by recent forest fires. As the sun begins to set on an action-packed day, wind down by visiting the University of Arizona’s Mt. Lemmon Skycenter. This observatory hosts a five-hour program complete with an educational lecture, dinner, and a unique stargazing experience that’s sure to leave you in awe. Tickets can be purchased online at skycenter.arizona.edu. After a long day exploring Mount Lemmon and the town of Summerhaven, the perfect place to rest for the night is the Mt. Lemmon Hotel. After construction delays caused by both the pandemic and fires, this small business opened its doors in April of 2021. These private cabins are spacious enough for the whole family (yes, pets included!), and even include a fully equipped kitchen. Located in the heart of Summerhaven, all of its attractions are within walking distance. Get ready to break out your winter coat! For more information on all the fun activities that Mount Lemmon has to offer, visit their website at skithelemmon.com.
Looking for a deeply personal wander (and occasional run) through the Catalinas? Thoughts past, present and... Frog Mountain Blues is our guide. And yours. Enjoy images and words from two of our great Catalina Mountain artists: Charles Bowden and Jack Dykinga. You will never look at Romero Canyon or Pima Canyon the same. Or any part of our epic mountains. Frog Mountains they were. And might still be. Get in there!

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.
BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.
Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!
Snag some of the key details of the outfits here! 36
