Summertime

I hope this letter finds you laying by the pool or lake and soaking in some much-needed vitamin D.

As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of summer. There's just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement and adventure.

Sure, fall has my favorite flavors and scents, winter has its cozy charms, and I can't deny the beauty of spring. But when the summer solstice rolls around, I’m more than ready for the long, languid days sitting by the pool or floating on a boat.

The pages in our Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of this season.  And even if summer doesn't mean three months of summer vacation anymore (because we're, you know, adults) we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off our ultimate summer bucket list (check the table of contents for ours!) and curling up with a new favorite poolside read. (P.S. teachers, you deserve this much-needed break!)

My family loves to go to all the outdoor summer concerts and fairs each year. [i.e.: I love exploring new hiking trails, going for bike rides, and even just having a picnic in the park. There's something about being in nature that feels so rejuvenating and refreshing.]

Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experience of our city.

RECOGNIZING VETERANS

Our Douglas County Veteran’s Monument Foundation provides programs and services to our home town heros

More than 20,000 veterans call Douglas County home, with the majority having served in Vietnam, the Gulf War, or post-Gulf War conflicts (2002–present). With its proximity to military bases and adventurous outdoor lifestyle, Jarold Wildman, current chair of the Douglas County Veterans Memorial Fund (DCVMF), said the area attracts many veterans who got a taste of what Colorado offers during military training and decided to return.

Wildman, a Colorado native, grew up in Evergreen and served two Middle East deployments with the Navy from 1994 to 1998 as a Damage Controlman, where he trained in firefighting, ship stability, and chemical, radiological, and biological warfare defense.

For Wildman, the Navy was a path to his life’s purpose—fighting fires. Coming from a long line of firefighters, his passion for putting out wildfires began as a young child and never wavered.

But when he graduated from high school in 1994, you could only be a firefighter once you were 21. So he joined the Navy—the only branch of service that

INSPIRED BY | LIFE + CULTURE
14

could guarantee firefighting training and experience. Soon, he found himself onboard the USS Ingersoll stationed out of Pearl Harbor, HI.

The lessons he learned in those four years remain close to his heart almost two decades later, and he’s dedicated to serving fellow veterans and helping them in whatever way he can.

As chair of DCVMF, Wildman oversees the organization’s Veteran’s Assistance Grant Program, providing much-needed financial assistance to local veterans needing a “hand up.”

While he acknowledges many government and non-profit programs offer resources to veterans, his organization hopes to step in where those services fall short. Veterans can apply online for a once-per-lifetime Veterans Assistance Grant of up to $2,000.

“It could be as simple as helping someone with a car repair or an electric bill,” said Wildman. “The goal is to prevent a minor bill from spiraling into something financially devastating.”

CONTINUED > 15 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/CASTLEROCK JULY 2023

Wildman’s leadership has also helped make DCVMF’s golf tournament fundraiser a huge success. The annual event raises money that goes directly to providing grants and maintaining the veteran’s monument at Veteran’s Corner in downtown Castle Rock.

The bronze statue, named Freedoms Keeper, cost more than $100,000 to design and build and sits atop a 5-foot granite pedestal displaying each of the six service seals. According to DCVMF, “The colorful stones in the wall that hold each of the service flags and the POW flag are from the Historic Courthouse that burned down in 1978.”

“IT COULD BE AS SIMPLE AS HELPING SOMEONE WITH A CAR REPAIR OR AN ELECTRIC BILL. THE GOAL IS TO PREVENT A MINOR BILL FROM SPIRALING INTO SOMETHING FINANCIALLY DEVASTATING.”
INSPIRED BY | LIFE + CULTURE 16
—JAROLD WILDMAN

Wildman said he wants people to know Freedoms Keeper isn’t a memorial. It’s a monument dedicated to the past, present, and future.

DCVMF’s last mission is to expand veteran outreach and raise awareness in the community around issues that affect this patriotic group of citizens. Its most prominent event is the annual golf tournament held during Armed Forces Week.

Its second-largest event is VetFest in downtown Castle Rock each July (this year, on July 8) with food trucks, live music, a 5K run and walk, artists, and vendors.

Wildman said the group is always looking for volunteers, especially those with marketing, bookkeeping, administration, or grant-writing skills. “You don’t need to be a veteran. Just come with a heart ready to serve.”

THE PERFECT OUTDOOR SPACE

The sun is out, and whether you’re looking to sell your house or simply have friends over for a cookout, it’s time to liven up your patio and backyard for the season. Everything from curb appeal to a relaxing backyard ambiance can be tweaked and shifted to perfect your space for any occasion. Ginger Knutson, a local real estate agent with Titan One Realty, lends her own advice for sprucing up the outdoors.

START WITH THE FRONT YARD

While the focal points of a home’s value are typically the kitchen and the bathrooms, Knutson reminds us that the outdoor spaces can be just as critical—especially as Coloradans love the outdoors. According to Knutson, “Having good curb appeal sets the tone upon entering your house, so having a clean, low-maintenance front yard is ideal.” As the front yard is more of an invitation into the home, it doesn’t need to be as extravagant as the backyard; some minimalist décor and clean landscaping can be welcoming to guests.

SPEND MORE ON THE BACKYARD

“For me, spending the bulk of the landscaping budget on the backyard is the way to go,” Knutson explains. “Often, from May until October, we can use our outdoor space for relaxing or entertaining. I always like to add

rugs to create warmth and to define an area, and I love to have various seating areas as well: a dining table, a set of chairs or a bistro table, and a comfy couch.” With so many defined seating areas, you can have a dinner off the grill in one space, then move to the couch for an outdoor game night. With a bigger budget in mind, Knutson confirms that adding a deck can provide up to a 90% return on investment. “This is a great way to affordably add living space to your home,” she says. “Furthermore, adding a pergola to your deck or patio can give you almost yearround outside time.”

FINAL QUICK TIPS

Sometimes all a space needs is a little fix or a simple adjustment, and outdoor spaces come with some simple solutions for just that. Knutson shares, “First, if you have dogs, get turf, and have it professionally installed. Second, use weather-resistant furniture, such as wicker, powder-coated metal, or pressure-treated stained and sealed wood. Third, build your deck out of Trex; it will save you in the long run, as it doesn’t require upkeep or periodic staining and sealing. Fourth, always add lights—hanging twinkle lights or solar lanterns and faux flickering candles that can be turned on with remote. And last but not least, it’s always a great idea to consult with a designer if you are not a confident decorator.”

Local expert Ginger Knutson shares how to curate stylish outdoor spaces this summer and increase the value of your home.

Trends Can be Fun

Paying attention to trends in design is a good idea, but like with everything, there’s a catch to staying trendy. “I love trends because I love current design. However, it’s not always practical or feasible to switch out your finishings every couple of years,” Knutson adds. “For Colorado, I'd say make your backyard as fun and livable as possible. Turf, decks, extended stamped-concrete patios, hanging twinkle lights, fire pits (gas only, since we are often under fire ban), and water features are great examples.”

Dining is a big part of every vacation, and the Gaylord Rockies Resort makes sure guests’ culinary experiences are unique and memorable. Wine and beer dinners are available along with Old Hickory Master Cocktail Classes . Participants learn from master cocktail artisans, as well as local brand experts. The hourlong course begins with an overview of spirits followed by crafting two cocktails with the help of master bartenders. Cocktail classes are every Saturday at 3:00 PM and are $40 per person. The Gaylord Rockies works with various Colorado breweries to put on beer dinners, including Dry Dock and Odell Breweries.

If relaxation is really more your speed, the resort’s Relâche Spa provides summer massages, facials, and nail treatments. Mood-boosting Ylang-Ylang and honey-inspired services are available, and the summer months include spa treatments to increase your immune system as well as anti-inflammatory ginger, lime and agave services and more.

Join Nature's Educators for this popular one-hour presentation.
