GREENWOOD AUTOMOTIVE
Greenwood Automotive, Quality Pre-owned Auto Sales This community is special to us! Melanie and I know that what makes this community special are the people and the businesses. Owning a small business today is challenging, we would like to take this opportunity to give them a platform to share their passion! Thank you for continuing to support them with us! When Colorado native John Schabacker found his passion in the automotive industry 26 years ago, he quickly discovered the joys and challenges of owning a small business selling pre-owned vehicles. After working his way to Partner at Chevrolet, he opened his own business, Greenwood Automotive in 2007. John and his family have lived in Castle Rock for over 20 years, and as longtime friends and neighbors of Louie and Melanie, John is their “go-to” source for pre-owned cars.
What can you expect from Greenwood Automotive? Our vehicles are generally locally owned vehicles that we obtain through customer trade-ins, private party purchases, consignments from prior clients, and on some occasions, purchase from other local dealerships. Every automobile we sell goes through a comprehensive 120-point mechanical check, which is performed by one of our certified technicians in-house. We encourage you to come in and see our inventory and speak with one of our professional sales team members. If we don’t currently have the vehicle you are looking for, we will work hard to find it! We want you to feel comfortable while providing excellent customer service from test drive to purchase and beyond. Advertisement
“I just tell John what vehicle I am interested in and he can find it for me, and usually something even better. He’s always transparent about the vehicles he sells and finds me the best fit.” – Louie What is Greenwood Automotive? John and his staff at Greenwood Automotive have established their business on selling dependable cars in an open and transparent way. Our goal is to develop long-term relationships with our customers. We’re not a high-pressure company! Our customers have a pleasant and relaxing shopping experience with us. We’re proud of our company culture and the environment we’ve built for all of our employees. Greenwood Automotive has two certified service technicians and a full detail department. Additionally, we provide broker services, to assist our clients in finding the ideal vehicle. Where is Greenwood Automotive? Greenwood Automotive is now open at 18945 Twenty Mile Lane, Parker Colorado 80134. We opened our new location November 15, 2021. We are excited to be a part of the Parker and surrounding communities. This new space is allowing us to offer a wider, more diverse inventory while still providing the service and detailing we always have!
For all your vehicle needs contact John Schabacker at 303-771-1007. Visit our store Monday–Friday, 9am to 7pm or Saturday 10am-7pm: Greenwood Automotive 18945 Twenty Mile Lane, Parker, CO 80134. To view our current inventory or to schedule a service or detail visit www.greenwoodautomotive.com

It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

A day doesn’t pass when I don’t meet another ‘plant parent’ around our beautiful town. I am not sure if I knew until the last year that my twelve plus year hobby or as my husband likes to call an obsession had an identity. Loosely defined, a plant parent is someone who looks after plants with as much care and devotion as they would a child or a pet. This trend has really taken off in recent years and it’s easy to see why. Houseplants offer us a connection to the outdoor world and let us experience the satisfaction of nurturing life. When I adopted my first plant I was just looking to compliment my new home’s décor. I had torn a page out of Architectural Digest with a picture of a room that was designed with a beautiful plant. I found that plant from the magazine at the local florist in historic downtown Castle Rock and happily drove it home like a new born baby. My original reasons for plants in my home where to make my spaces look beautiful. However, I quickly discovered that the plants were improving the air quality in my home. That’s when I started my deep dive into researching the other benefits of plants in the home. It's easy to assume that 'healthy plants' refers to plants that are thriving, indoors and out. Actually, it's a term that covers plants that benefit our health. While the health benefits of plant-based diets are well documented, new research uncovers the lesser-known uses of the nature around us. I started asking the local owners of our area floral shops, garden centers, nurseries and garden club members every possible question I could think of. One thing about plant people is they are happy to share their knowledge and welcome every and all questions. It’s one of the happiest group of people to be around. They are natural born nurturers. So don’t be afraid when you are getting started to seek advice from experts and fellow plant enthusiasts.

To get started with filling your home with some of your very own healthy greens, here are some of my top recommendations for areas in your life that you want to focus on. If that be mental clarity or better sleep. There is a plant out there for you, just don’t give up. Growing plants is a labor of love. As such, there’s bound to be some trial and error involved and some mistakes along the way. Be patient with yourself and remember that you’re getting better each day. Have fun on this adventure, you are not only filling your home with beauty, but you are actively improving your wellbeing and those you live with.
PLANTS THAT REDUCE ANXIETY Lavender is known for its stress-relieving qualities – it slows down the heart rate and lowers blood pressure to greatly reduce stress. This is why its scent can often be found in lotions and sprays. Snake Plant is also believed to reduce anxiety, improve respiratory problems and cure the symptoms of a headache
PLANTS THAT HELP YOU SLEEP Not getting enough sleep can have a huge impact on many aspects of life, from our health to our work abilities to our social lives. Whether you struggle to drift off or are easily disturbed in the night, keeping a potted Aloe Vera plant beside your bed could help you see the night through, as it produces oxygen at night to combat insomnia and improve overall sleep quality. Jasmine flower is also believed to reduce anxiety levels which in turn will help you drift off to sleep, and the gentle scent will keep you in a deep sleep throughout the night. Peace lilies are also believed to improve air quality by as much as 60 per cent and true to their name, bring with them a sense of peace and relaxation.

PLANTS THAT INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY Having plants in home office can increase productivity. Not only are they found to reduce stress and fatigue whilst aiding memory retention. Bamboo Palm is known for its ability to fight indoor air pollution, promoting clear-thinking and easy breathing. Another plant is Golden Pothos which removes air toxins and absorbs unpleasant smells – the perfect plant to keep by the fridge or in the kitchen.
PLANTS THAT CLEAR THE AIR Removing harmful toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene will keep both you and your home happy and healthy. Rubber Plant and Peace Lilies are both incredibly effective at purifying the air around you. Rubber Plants are great for removing harmful toxins, particularly formaldehyde, and these plants become more efficient at cleaning the air as time goes on. Peace Lilies are also believed to improve air quality by as much as 60 per cent and true to their name, bring with them a sense of peace and relaxation.
PLANTS THAT FIGHT INFECTION Herbal remedies have been used to fight infection for centuries and still stand the test of time today. Before pharmacies were readily available, Red Clover was used in teas and ointments to treat coughs, colds and skin irritations.

With our beautiful state currently being ranked the 4th healthiest place to live, Douglas county is filled with some of the most perfect places to start the practice of meditative walking. Mindful walking can lead to a unique set of benefits compared with its seated counterpart. The practice brings you closer to nature as well as your body. Walking meditation, also known as mindful walking, is an active practice that requires you to be consciously aware and moving in the environment rather than sitting down with your eyes closed. It’s a simple and comfortable form of meditation that can be particularly valuable for newcomers or anyone who prefers a more active form of this practice. The best hidden gem in our county to get started with meditation walking is at A Sanctuary Center, located in at 3720 Wolfensberger Road in Sedalia. Founded by Jack and Sue Pfeiffer, this nonprofit continues to be a place for everyone. When you arrive, you’ll immediately feel a trance of calmness comes over your body. The peace of walking around through a labyrinth is only the beginning. Imagine yourself in complete love and peace. A Sanctuary Center opens at dawn and does not close until dusk. The meaningful experience of picking the perfect time for you to meditate allows this place to transform into so many different experiences throughout the time of day you visit. It always feel like a new experience.

Avoid harsh chemicals by making your own skin-care products ARTICLE BY GLENNA HOPE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER CHEN
When you’re accustomed to doing things the way you always have, you may not see why you would want to switch up your routine. Natural body care is based on the philosophy of working in partnership with nature to nourish and support our bodies through all of life’s phases. Nature offers us many choices for effectively grooming ourselves with wholesome ingredients, many of which we already have in our kitchen. It is widely known that chemicals, artificial colors, and fillers in skin care products and makeup can cause redness, irritation,
and breakouts. Many people are even allergic to chemicals commonly found in conventionally produced products. Natural makeup, skin care products, and body products work with your skin instead of against it. Our DYI recipes are sure to delight the hearts of anyone who is interested in some easy to make products that will be sure to become a must have product made by you in the comforts of your home. Honey and Oatmeal Homemade Face Wash INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup of uncooked oats • 2 tbsp honey (raw and local is best) • 1 tsp nutmeg
• 10 drops lavender essential oil • 10 drops tea tree oil
DIRECTIONS In a food processor, process the oatmeal until almost a fine powder. Combine with the rest of the ingredients, and keep in a clean container with a lid. (This should stay good for about 2 weeks). Rub gently into face, using circular motions, for 1 minute, then rinse clean. If you need a little more grit and scrubbing power with your homemade face wash, this is a good recipe, because there is a slight abrasiveness with the oats.
Overnight Shea Butter Hand Mask INGREDIENTS • 2 oz (roughly 4 Tbsp) shea butter • 2 oz jojoba oil • 2 oz coconut oil
• •
2 oz beeswax pellets 5 drops lavender essential oil
DIRECTIONS Combine everything except the lavender oil in a pan over low heat and melt completely. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly before adding the lavender essential oil. Pour the mixture into a small jar or tin and allow to cool for several hours. To use, apply a thick layer of lavender and shea butter balm to hands, nails, and feet, and then put on a pair of socks and cotton gloves. Crawl into bed and let the oils work on repairing your dry hands and feet.

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 42
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FITNE S S
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. “It’s an interesting moment in time. There’s this heightened sense of, ‘how do I become more resilient, how do I boost my immune system?’ Health and wellness is way more in the spotlight, and the trend of more people being at home has launched a new consumer process,” they say. It doesn’t hurt that they are designed with your home in mind. The elegant and unique physique makes it an easy decision for everyone to appreciate. “The design passed the wife test—everyone was happy to have it! We appreciate aesthetics and design, that’s been a key piece. It fits with a beautiful home and we are proud of that.” CONTINUED >

“What’s also exciting about this is that we have partnered with American Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman, who has a very specific protocol: Get in for sixty seconds, get out for sixty, do three to five rotations and get to the point of a shiver.”
Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. Ryan also compares it to working out, citing weightlifting as an example. “The whole thing is tearing your muscles down so they become stronger. You are going through an intentional stressor. You will get a relaxed response after, but you are intentionally putting yourself into a fight or flight state. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan has his own process—getting in, breathing four seconds in and four seconds out, transitioning his hands in and out of the water because their different nerve endings create a different blood flow and kick off the fight or flight mechanism. His nervous system then calms down and his mind sets into calmness roughly two and a half minutes in. After a three minute plunge, he comes out super energized with mental clarity. “It feels like a back door to meditation for people who don’t meditate, i.e. two to three

minutes vs twenty,” he says. “It’s a totally different process, but you push out the mental chatter and you become more present.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. “A lot of people who come for our product just want to do hard things, uncomfortable things. They say, if it’s good for me AND it’s difficult, then they are completely motivated by that.” The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. “One of the things that has been rad that we did not anticipate is parents doing it with their children,” he says. “It’s become this ritual where they do it together, a family plunge.” CrossFit frontman Rich Froning told the team that the coolest thing about having The Plunge is doing the plunge together every night with his daughter. It’s another layered benefit for their clients to know, one of creating special time around doing something uncomfortable and getting healthier, together. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
