PILATES FOR YOU In truth, Pilates really is for everyone. Once widely envisioned as elitist, this mind-and-body strengthening is not just for the aquiline dancer. Pilates does indeed perfect the long, lithe muscles of the dancing type; however, it’s been widely practiced for rehab and continued strength building since the mid-1920s by heavyweight boxers and later by Olympic athletes and professional athletes in the NFL, NBA, NBL, PGA and MLS. These are highly conditioned, muscled athletes, an exceptional number of whom are men. The Club Pilates in Castle Rock enjoys the attendance of at least 30 men and is steadily gaining more as men brush off the widely contrived feminine aspect. But Pilates isn’t just for the already strong either. It’s known for rehabbing most anybody who can arrive at the studio to begin progress. Heather Lewis, an instructor who just finished an intensive 500-hour process to learn Club Pilates’ techniques and gain certification, maintains that instructors can modify the workout to fit the individual’s situation or ailment, including, but not limited to, hip and knee replacement surgery, spinal fusion and pregnancy. “Anybody can do it,” she says. Pilates can absolutely assist in injury recovery and just help people get “back in the saddle,” of note due to the sheer number of horse riders around the vicinity. Julie claims many local riders as clients, with one decorated rider, in particular, testifying to its benefits. “Club Pilates Castle Rock has been great in improving my balance, strength and posture since it opened in spring 2017. I go three to four times [per] week. I believe core strength is key to riding well and know I am stronger from Pilates.” Age is also no barrier. “We have active members up to their 80s,” Julie says. Club Pilates hosts “CP Teens,” a special class just for teens ages 14 to 19. There are four levels of difficulty to gradually build your foundation and nine different classes offered for assorted strengthening reasons. “Pilates is truly for everybody, no matter what your age or fitness level,” Julie says. “If you are new to Pilates, I would suggest starting with our Reformer Flow 1.0 class.
