seems never-ending and there’s no shortage of adventures that await. For many, summer evokes fond memories of childhood—sleepaway camp, family vacations and swimming until your fingers shriveled like prunes. We also celebrate our nation’s independence, host parties for our friends and family and, if we’re lucky, take a vacation or even a staycation! We have planned the perfect staycation at the Umstead (see page 18) and also take you on a dream tour of the most beautiful Wrightsville coastal-inspired beach home (see page 26.) In this issue of Cary Lifestyle, we want to remind you why summer is a season of opportunity. When’s the last time you played tourist in your hometown? We invite you to use pages 14-17 as your guide to some spectacular downtown Cary hot spots for delectable sips and bites. With so much to see and do this month, we only scratched the surface of what Cary has to offer—but we hope this issue gets you off to a good start.

BottleDog offers more than 100 carefully selected bottled beers, along with a Crowler machine that allows beer lovers to take home 32 ounces of draft beer in an aluminum can. COTTON HOUSE CRAFT BREWERS 307 S. Academy St., Cary, CottonHouseCraft.com If you’re looking for a unique summer experience, stop by the historic Pasmore House in downtown Cary, and grab an artisan beer from Cotton House Craft Brewers. Owner Brent Webb branded his business on the ideals of community, farming, history and Southern hospitality. While you sip your drink, enjoy food from the Mayton Inn located next door, and view and purchase local artwork. Select a spot at the Prohibition-era styled bar, in one of the comfortable rooms or outside on the porch. Brent’s brewers use hops from Running Turtle Hops Farm in Liberty, North Carolina, and hop farmer Art Robertson works with the North Carolina State Agriculture Department to engineer some of the hop varieties. “From the hops to the history to the house, it’s all local,” Brent says.

TRIANGLE RESIDENTS DON’T HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR TO FIND PARADISE

A World Away ARTICLE CAROLINE BARNHILL | PHOTOGRAPHY CATHERINE NGUYEN

FOR MORE THAN 12 YEARS, THE UMSTEAD HOTEL AND SPA HAS TEMPTED LOCAL RESIDENTS TO FORGO THEIR BOARDING PASSES AND INSTEAD FIND RELAXATION RIGHT IN THEIR OWN BACKYARD. Nestled among 12 acres of natural woodlands overlooking a private lake in Cary, The Umstead has elevated the Triangle’s hospitality scene. Today it is the only hotel in the area boasting of both the AAA Five Diamond Award and a Forbes Five-Star rating. It’s easy to see why the moment you walk through the gleaming glass doors. Worries seemingly melt away upon entering the lightfilled lobby featuring warm wood and earth tones. Guests sip on the chilled, strawberrymint infused water waiting for them at the reception desk before stopping to marvel at the stunning floral display supplied by local florist Watered Garden. “We change our floral displays every week,

Visitors can get pampered with an array of unique spa treatments, like the seasonal sparkling passionfruit pedicure that is inspired by the scents of summer. For the art lovers, The Umstead features an impressive private collection, along with a quarterly rotating artist gallery with pieces available for purchase in the hotel’s carefully curated Umstead Gift Shop. Herons, the property’s five-star restaurant, also offers the Art Tour, a special tasting menu inspired by The Umstead’s art collection, which includes the chef’s signature dish, a 62-degree egg plated in a hand-crafted bowl inspired by Raleigh-based artisan Jason van Duyn. “You so often hear people say, ‘I need a vacation from my vacation,” Caroline says. “Traveling can be exhausting. By choosing instead to take a staycation at The Umstead, you still experience the feeling of being miles away but without the hassle.”

LAUREN BURNS OF LAUREN BURNS INTERIORS DESIGNS RALEIGH FAMILY'S DREAM HOME

Mid-Century Modern Meets Industrial Sleek ARTICLE CHRISTINA MINNISH PHOTOGRAPHY CATHERINE NGUYEN WHEN YOU STEP INSIDE FRANK AND LAURA MARTINEZ’S FAMILY HOME ON MELVIN ARNOLDS STREET IN RALEIGH, YOU’LL NOTICE A FEW EYE-CATCHING FEATURES. Lauren Burns of Lauren Burns Interiors worked with the couple to design their dream home after relocating to Raleigh from Boston with their two young children. Lauren says the house they purchased was already renovated, but it didn’t fit their needs completely. “They wanted it a little bit more open,” she says. “They wanted more light to come in.” The Martinez family worked with a contractor to blow out the back of the house off the family room, install 16-foot sliding doors and create a second-floor balcony as a part of the additional renovation. One notable feature is the free-standing, reclaimed woodwrapped fireplace. According to Lauren, Frank had a lot of creative ideas and was a major part of the process involving the fireplace. They refaced the whole fireplace with reclaimed wood, which they ran vertically around it, and added metal edging and a metal mantle. Additionally, there’s a piece of art that serves to disguise the television above the mantle. Overall, the home has a mid-century-modern-meets-industrial look.

Lauren enjoys figuring out how to maximize a space based on how her clients want it to function, but her favorite part is when it all comes together and she can see her clients’ reactions. “It’s such a special relationship that you develop with these people because you’re in their homes and you get to know their lives— them personally, their struggles, the things they get excited about,” she says. “I’ve had clients who have cried when I’ve left because they are just so happy that the space is everything they had hoped for. That’s a really good feeling to know you’ve made such an impact on a family and to know they are going to be able to enjoy it for years to come. It makes me feel good about what I do every day.”

The Dining Room The dining room offers huge windows capturing westerly sunsets over the Masonboro Channel and Island to the south. The 12th-century Italian hand-carved wooden columns frame the 12-seat mahogany dining room table, surrounded by leather Dakota Jackson chairs. An antique 90-degree buffet adorns the far corner, and a 19th-century rounded glass breakfront displays hand-painted art deco fish plates. The dining room walls and ceiling are a hand-painted mural accented with 18 karat gold leaf by local artist Erin Kornegay. She depicts flowing tree leaves populated with bluebirds, cardinals, hummingbirds, finches, butterflies and ladybugs that present a peaceful setting. FOOTBALL CLUB. NCFC Youth, the largest club in North Carolina, offers various levels of play, from recreation level to the Elite Club’s National League. The program’s goal is to serve as a funnel from entry-level players to professionals. The NCFC Youth’s recreation program alone has nearly 6,000 kids. And while the advanced clubs are often coached by former professional players, the recreational club is one of the largest volunteer-based soccer programs in the country, filled by volunteers like Ade looking to develop themselves as coaches. This past season was Ade’s first as a coach, and he served as both head coach of son Jamie’s U8 Breakers team and assistant coach for son Oliver’s U11 Jets team. NCFC’s recreation-level teams have around nine players, depending on age, who participate in 10 weeks of practice each season and compete in eight games. Teams play in fall and in spring, with an optional

tournament.

commit their personal time, often hours a week, to develop their players. “At the beginning, I spent a bit more time because I had to figure out what I was doing,” Ade laughs. “One of the things I figured out very quickly, and the parents figured out very quickly, was that I needed help. So, I got assistant coaches.” NCFC also provides state-of-the-art online education courses for entry-level coaches looking to develop their own skills. Ade, a Cary resident for the past 15 years, played youth soccer in elementary and middle school and has enjoyed the different perspective he experienced while working with his sons and other players on the field. “It’s neat to see them develop as players,” Ade says.
