That is a terrific accomplishment with many obvious benefits, but there are some hidden problems people need to think about. A major concern is the stress it is putting on resources for those age 60 and above such as assisted living care centers, churches and synagogues, libraries, senior centers and Meals on Wheels, local AARP chapters and the many thousands of people that are dedicated to making seniors' lives better. OneSource for Longevity Readiness is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to making life better for those who serve seniors. WHEN JASON AND SUMMER YOUNG MOVED INTO THEIR 3,200-SQUARE-FOOT HOME IN THE GREYSTONE AREA OF NORTH RALEIGH LAST APRIL, THEY KNEW THEY NEEDED HELP BRINGING IT UP TO DATE WHILE KEEPING ITS UNIQUE EUROPEAN CHARM. They enlisted the help of local designer Michael Strauss of The Design Haus to redesign the home’s grand foyer, living room and dining room. As a young couple who enjoys hosting, the Youngs' top priority was reworking the living room to provide a space to entertain family and friends. Michael chose a palette of cool grays, charcoals and neutrals while incorporating some reclaimed wood details throughout the occasional tables and wall sconces. A Greek key pattern rug perfectly ties everything together. The outdated fireplace with its tile inset hearth was replaced with a classic gray and white marble herringbone surround and slab hearth. The revised clean lines of the fireplace mantel complete the look.

Michael then moved to the two-story foyer, which was without much detail except for the existing arched doorways. “I wanted the space to feel more intimate. We incorporated floor-to-ceiling shadow box molding which paid tribute to the architecture of the home and its traditional nature and added a new, more sizeable light fixture to help fill the space,” Michael says. “We wanted to update the space while still making it look like it could have always been there by matching the architecture of the home.” The process was seamless, Summer says. “We didn’t have any preconceived notions of what we wanted,” she says. “Michael really guided us through the process by quickly picking up on our style while also pushing us to go outside of our comfort zone.” Like, for instance, recommending a palette of magenta, blush and dusty rose with a floral-andlace-inspired wallpaper in the dining room. But for Michael, it was a risk he was willing to take.

“I’m designing for two accountants, people who often think in black and white and ones and zeros. But the Youngs wanted something different for the dining room, and I went for it,” Michael says. “It paid off, and they loved the concept. But I also made sure to balance the feminine details by incorporating rich wood tones, metallic finishes and other natural elements in the space.” Michael says he enjoyed sourcing the majority of the furniture in the dining and living rooms from U.S. companies—from the upholstered dining chairs from Hickory, North Carolina, to the solid oak table and chairs from a small Amish community. Large framed canvases were custom-made by California-based artists, and custom draperies were created by North Carolina artisans. “In the foyer, the display cabinet and console table are handmade from solid reclaimed

The two started out with a small table at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh in 2007 before expanding to other local markets and eventually opening the doors to their shop in Cary on Dec. 14, 2017. Norbert purposefully designed the shop with clean lines, classic materials

The stone facade and arched windows combined with the understated elegance of the interior offers customers a European ambiance. Additionally, the shop is designed so customers can see the bakers at work creating everything from scratch and making for the royals in 19th-century Germany. Customers can smell the baked goods, see them on display and watch them being made by hand. There

They have German breads; authentic Munich Oktoberfest pretzels and brotchen; and cakes, tortes, cookies and other items. “The recipes of many of our products are ancestral, coming from our parents and grandparents,” Norbert says. “We don’t modify those recipes. Our business is an artisan bakery that stands on three pillars. One is top quality. The second one is authenticity and then uniqueness.”

FOR EMILY PAGE, TATTOOING IS A WAY TO EXPRESS HERSELF AND HELP OTHERS THROUGH ART. “I spent my early years in a VW camper,” Emily says. “So, there wasn’t really a TV around a lot, but lots of art supplies were.” Emily started painting and drawing, majored in visual art in college at Wake Forest University, and spent time teaching art. She wanted to try creating art as a tattoo artist but had heard horror stories about the apprentice process. By happenstance, her husband, Sebastian, had been getting tattoos for years by Julio DeLeon, a talented artist who was unhappy in the shop where he was working. “This situation just fell in our laps,” Emily says. “We were looking for the next venture, and we saw an opportunity to shape it the way we wanted to, to make things different than other tattoo shops, take the attitude out of it.” Emily learned from Julio as she and Sebastian opened up Ratatat Tats Tattoo & Permanent Makeup Studio in Cary in February 2018. Sebastian manages the business and the front desk. Ratatats isn’t how you would imagine a typical tattoo shop. The walls are adorned with Emily’s artwork, and the ceiling boasts hundreds of paper butterflies descending in various colors, sizes and designs. There’s a tree made of styrofoam with leaves transforming into butterflies. CONTINUED >

“I call what I do transformational tattooing,” she says. “People get tattoos for a wide variety of reasons, but I really love the ones where people are doing something to help themselves feel better.” Emily also provides permanent makeup tattoos to help clients who have lost eyebrows from alopecia or to give a confidence boost. She particularly likes working with clients on areola repigmentation where she is able to give something back to those who have survived breast cancer treatments and mastectomies. 28

In 2003, Maura left her job as a speech-language pathologist to create the Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited and serve individuals and families affected by aphasia. TAP Unlimited offers support and programming for individuals with aphasia to help them improve their language skills while also providing a sense of community. The organization also offers resources and support for families and friends of those suffering from aphasia. “Research has shown that 92 percent of people with aphasia consider themselves socially isolated,” Maura says. “TAP Unlimited offers group sessions where individuals can practice their speech skills with the assistance of SLPs and trained volunteers, as well as book clubs, garden clubs and more.” Since its inception, TAP Unlimited has worked with hundreds of individuals across the Triangle. Many individuals who once participated in the program come back to serve as volunteers. “I don’t want people with aphasia to look at this catastrophic thing that happened and say, ‘This is going to define me forever,” Maura explains. “We want to help give them back their lives again.” 34
