LIFESTYLE LETTER
Greetings From Carmel City Lifestyle’s New Co-Publishers
October 2026 PUBLISHER
Terry Malcolm | terry.malcolm@citylifestyle.com CO-PUBLISHER
Andi Malcolm | andi.malcolm@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
There's something extra special and exciting about this month’s edition for us, as we become the new co-publishers of Carmel City Lifestyle magazine. We thank previous publisher Andrea Kulsrud for launching the magazine during April 2023, and appreciate what a striking, helpful and inspiring reflection of the community that it's become. As we introduce the annual Food and Drink publication this month, we welcome you to our table, so to speak. For me (Andi), Carmel is my hometown, a place where I grew up, where my roots run deep and where so many meaningful chapters of my life began. Together with my husband, Terry, we're focused on supporting the thriving businesses of the Carmel region. And we toast to Carmel's top-ranked quality of life and booming arts scene. This month, we're highlighting the variety of delicious cuisines and creative beverages that Carmel has to offer. You’ll also see some of our favorite hometown eateries, including those with international flair. Because this edition is also about 'breaking bread' together, we thought you'd enjoy a couple of recipes for ushering in the fall season. Autumn is a wonderful time for comfort foods, so we're wondering what you'll be craving. For me (Terry), I like to seek out filet, seafood or sushi, while Andi enjoys filet, sweet potatoes and warm chocolate chip cookies. Thank you, readers, advertising partners and sources, for continuing to allow Carmel City Lifestyle to tell the stories that make this place so special. Cheers to reading,

TASTE AUTHENTIC THAILAND ARTICLE BY ALLYSON (ALLY)

The Difference In Dining Awaits At Thai Season Restaurant In Carmel
Stepping into Thai Season restaurant at 1379 S. Rangeline Road, diners will experience the smells, sounds and sights of authentic Thai cuisine that caters to modern tastes. A culinary exercise in balance, Thai cuisine blends sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter and umami flavors into memorable meals. Abby Pearson, the owner-operator of Thai Season, says she loves sharing Thai culture with Carmel residents and visitors. “I’ve always loved cooking and seeing people enjoy the food I prepare. Over time, my passion for cooking grew into a dream of having my own restaurant.” The Carmel food scene features so many wonderful restaurants and cultures, she reflects. "We feel fortunate to be part of it and introduce diners to Thai. Our restaurant is a place where people can come for a casual meal, a family dinner or a special occasion and feel welcomed every time."

The restaurant's menu has a personal story, too. Many of the flavors, recipes and cooking techniques used in the restaurant connect to Abby’s memories of home and family. “Growing up, I learned that food brings people together, shows love and creates memories. For me, bringing those familiar flavors to the restaurant is a way of sharing a little piece of my home and my culture with guests," she explains. Balancing Thai flavors comes from experience, not from following a recipe. Abby says that when creating the menu, she thinks about three elements: authentic Thai flavors, guests' cravings and what her staff is passionate about serving. She also pays close attention to customer feedback. “Sometimes a dish becomes popular because guests discover it and tell their friends, and that helps us understand what people want,” she adds. CONTINUED >
THAI SEASON In designing Thai Season, Abby set out to create an inviting, contemporary space where every guest can embark on an authentic Thai culinary adventure and confidently explore bold new flavors. For new diners of Thai cuisine, she suggests Pad Thai as an introduction to Thai flavors. She also recommends Tom Yum Soup for anyone who wants something with more depth and traditional Thai character, with a spicy, sour and savory combination that makes Thai cuisine so unique. “When a customer comes back and tells us, 'I never knew Thai food could taste like this,' that's one of the most rewarding parts of owning the restaurant,” says Abby.

For Abby, success isn’t just about serving great food. She and the team at Thai Season are committed to becoming a part of Carmel and helping diners create memories while sharing a little piece of Thailand. “I hope Thai Season becomes a place that people return to because they love the food, and they feel connected to the people, the atmosphere and the experience.” 317.810.1016 ThaiSeasonCarmel.com
Abby Pearson, owner-operator, Thai Season restaurant
“Ultimately, every dish needs to meet our standards for flavor and quality before it becomes part of the Thai Season menu.” Food and hospitality are deeply linked in Thai culture. “In Thailand, when you welcome someone into your home, you want them to feel comfortable and well taken care of. That's the feeling we bring to Thai Season,” says Abby. “I want Thai Season to feel warm, friendly and inviting. Whether someone has eaten Thai food many times, or is trying it for the very first time, I want them to feel comfortable asking questions, exploring new flavors and enjoying the experience.”

MEET CARMEL CITY LIFESTYLE’S NEW CO-PUBLISHERS Married Duo Andi And Terry Malcolm Seek To Pour Back Into the Community's Vitality And Progress Andi Pruner Malcolm was born and raised in Carmel, living in the area for 41 years. "Now, we feel very fortunate to raise our daughter in the Carmel community," confirms the 2004 Carmel High School graduate who became a high school teacher and softball coach since 2009.
One of Andi's favorite aspects about Carmel is watching it grow, change and flourish. "Sun King, the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and visiting parks are just a few things we love about the area. Everything's accessible by walking or riding our bikes, which makes it even more enjoyable," she says. Being the co-publisher of this magazine's so exciting, Andi states. "Carmel is where I shop, walk, eat and explore on a daily basis. Carmel's opened so many doors for me, I want to be a part of its next chapter, and continue to help Carmel thrive by supporting the local business owners in our publication." What Andi likes most about the magazine is its versatility: "The magazine not only highlights the small businesses of our affluent community, it spotlights city events and what people are doing around town. Carmel is great because of its residents, businesses, relationships, community activities and visitors." Terry grew up in Garrett, just north of Ft. Wayne, and moved to Carmel in 2010. "I really enjoy talking with business managers about becoming an integral part of the magazine." He says when they aren't working, they enjoy golfing, exercising, riding bikes on Monon Trail and hosting pool parties at their house. "We love to frequent Rosie's for breakfast on Saturday mornings and grab dinner in Midtown when the weather is nice." Terry's business and marketing career spans being an operations and logistics executive with 20-plus years of experience leading transportation, warehousing, distribution and supply chain operations across multi-site networks. "Our mission is to inspire, instruct, entertain and uplift readers through helpful articles as well as searchable listings of local businesses, services, nonprofits and community organizatons, and by sharing unique experiences and events in and around Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Zionville and Hamilton County. We hope to inspire lively local living."

DIRECTIONS: For the dough: Cube and chill butter. Pulse chilled butter, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in food processor until butter is pea-sized. Gabriella 'Gabby' Blauert, Hamilton County Tourism communications manager, says Around The Table was meant to highlight dishes that feature ingredients fresh from the farms in Indiana, baked items made in-house, creative menus, novel approaches to meal choices, globally inspired recipes and personal stories of local restaurant teams who shared inspirations fueling their culinary journeys and the impact they've made regarding bringing people together through food. "Whether it's a cozy café, a bustling BBQ joint or a fine dining establishment, the Around The Table series celebrated the essence of local cuisine throughout Hamilton County communities," she says, noting it was a huge passion project for her. The video series reflected details directly from owners and chefs of regional restaurants, such as Caffé Buondí (by the way, buondi in Italian means good morning or good day), Convivio Italian Artisan Cuisine, Eggshell Bistro, Angelo's Italian Market, Big Hoffa's Smokehouse BBQ, 9th Street Bistro, Nyla's Restaurant, Yafa Golden Coffee and Freeland's. Around The Table also included insight from Delish Conversations with founders of dining establishments, such as the Wolfpack Restaurant Group with the Italian House in Westfield, Nyla’s in Westfield and Wolfies Grill in Carmel, Fishers, Geist and Noblesville. All of these culinary leaders had specific reasons that they decided to start restaurants, cafes, roasteries, bakeries or food markets in Hamilton County, which typically included wanting to be a part of shaping the county's future as it grows while retaining its overall community charm, strong family values and thriving business environment. There also were cultural benefits to factor in, per details cropping up in Delish Conversations. Madeline Gordon, manager of Wine & Rind, says the goal of the group's owners, Chuck and Tom Lazzara, was "to bring a little bit of Napa, Italy, Spain and France to the heart of Carmel." Ristorante Roma owner Raffaele D'Eusebio moved from Italy to operate a restaurant in Carmel because the area "seemed very European and a nice place to start a business and settle down." "Food, for me, is connected to a celebration. It could be a birthday, a Sunday lunch out with the family, a date, a reunion. Usually, all the moments around a table are shared with people worth sharing," explains Raffaele. Raffaele since went on to recently open Charred, a steakhouse and bourbon bar, at 61 W. City Center Drive. Hotel Nickel Plate's gastronomic design pays homage to the Nickel Plate Railroad. The restaurant tries to embody different cuisines from the stops along that railroad, which stretched from Buffalo, New York to St. Louis, Missouri. So, they offer Italian Beef, inspired by Chicago; a tenderloin, inspired by the State of Indiana; and fried/ toasted ravioli, inspired by St. Louis. Allie Commons says her lifelong dream was to own a coffeeshop. She achieved that goal by launching Rivet Coffee

Bar & Roastery in Westfield. They opened their second Rivet location in the Westfield Public Library, then a third location in Zionsville. Rocky Wals explains from where the name of his family-owned small batch bakery and cafe in Noblesville, Debbie's Daughters, came: "The Debbie in our namesake is Deborah 'Debbie' Downs, who had five daughters as well as seven sons. That's right, 12 children! And as these children grew, the family expanded to include many in-laws and grandchildren. Growing up in their house meant lots of family meals." Rocky says their baked goods combine a love for creating food from scratch and sharing with others. No matter what type of food establishment pursued, these regional food and beverage providers have a couple of aspects in common: adoration for community, respect for people and relationships built and bolstered around eating and drinking. VisitHamiltonCounty.com/Table Editor's Note regarding OFFER FOR FOOD ENTHUSIASTS: For Carmel City Lifestyle readers, the Hamilton County Tourism team created a landing page with a form for sharing favorite culinary experiences in Carmel, or Hamilton County, plus their contact information for the chance to receive a 'Hamilton County Foodie Package' that includes a cookbook with more recipes from local chefs, as well as other surprises. CONNECTING
THROUGH WINE
Danica Patrick, proprietor of Somnium vineyard

“WINE BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER, OPEN A BOTTLE AND YOU’VE GOT A REASON TO SLOW DOWN.”
Somnium means "dream" in Latin, making it a truly inspiring name for a vineyard and boutique wine brand owned by the most successful woman in the history of American open-wheel car racing. That driver is well-known in the Indy region, especially due to making Indianapolis 500 history in 2005 by becoming the first woman to lead the race. Over her career, she competed in eight Indianapolis 500 races, achieving a career-best finish of third place in 2009, before concluding her professional racing career at the 2018 Indy 500. But, she enthusiastically toasted 'cheers' to new endeavors! Now as a retired 'No. 10' racecar driver and entrepreneur, Danica Patrick says "wine is about connection, not just what’s in the glass." Her 22.46-acre Somnium estate, with 6 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, sits within Napa Valley’s only all-hillside appellation. The Somnium Vineyard is located in the area of St Helena, California, within the Howell Mountain AVA, at elevations from 1,000 to 1,375 feet.

“AT A WINE TASTING AT A NAPA HILLTOP VINEYARD DURING 2006, I HAD THIS MAGIC MOMENT THAT CHANGED HOW I SAW WINE, AND NAPA; THAT LED ME TO PURCHASE THE SOMNIUM PROPERTY IN 2009.”
"Somnium sits right in the sweet spot. Plenty of sun, no frost, cool nights and well-drained volcanic soil on a steep hillside, which is what gives our fruit its color and character. We're part of Crystal Springs of Napa Valley, the newest AVA in the region, officially recognized in late 2024," she explains. She says at the vineyard, she and Somnium’s winemaker Julien Fayard, have farmed organically since their very first vintage in 2013, and became CCOF-certified organic in 2019. Their Cabernet Sauvignon went in the ground in 2011 and 2012, after about two years of developing the property. They added Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in 2014. "The Cab Franc actually came from me falling in love with it as a drinker first, in other people's wines, before I ever thought to plant it myself," she recalls. So far, their most demanding harvest or weather event occurred in 2020, without question. Danica says the wildfires that year took an acre of their vineyard and about 90% of that vintage. "There's nothing that prepares you for watching something you've spent years growing just disappear like that, but it also reminded me why I do this. You rebuild, you replant and you keep going."

While Danica says she trusts her team in their jobs, she always stays in communication and available. She adds that she loves being involved in the day-to-day winemaking operations because it is her palate and passion. "Before each bottling, Julien sends me samples and we go through everything before it’s bottled. Every year when I'm in Napa, I taste through all the wines in barrel. In 2024, I even got to participate in my first harvest at the estate — 4 a.m. and all." Danica also owns her own athleisure collection, called "Warrior by Danica Patrick," which was created in partnership with G-III Apparel Group and named after the Native American mythology she had been exposed to in Arizona. "Racing rewards split-second instinct; you're faster than everyone else that day, and it's over. Winemaking doesn't work that way; you don't find out if you got it right for years, sometimes not until it's in someone's glass. The vineyard humbles you like that. You can't control the grape, the weather or the timing. You just trust the process and wait," she reflects. Somnium wines are primarily direct-to-consumer, as Danica says it just makes sense to have that direct relationship with the

people drinking their wine because they currently produce less than 1,000 cases. However, she says Danica Rosé is a different story. "It's a bigger production out of Provence, and that one moves mainly through distribution. I always tell people, Danica Rosé is truly a rosé-all-day wine that's meant to be enjoyed year-round.” Danica Rosé is organically farmed, vegan, gluten-free and fermented dry. If convinced to reveal her most favorite Somnium vintage they've ever produced, Danica admits it's tough to narrow to one. "But if I'm honest, my favorite wine right now is our 100% Cabernet Franc. I love it across all the vintages. If I had to pick for our estate Cabernet, it would be 2019, 2015 and 2021." When not drinking her own wine, which is "mostly what's in my glass, always," Danica branches to tequila in the form of margaritas. Tastings are by appointment at Danica's Tasting Lounge located at 1307 Lincoln Ave., in Calistoga, California. Danica says she wants to enable guests to be on their own schedules, not rushed through a set slot. "If people want to stay and linger, they can. I even wrote my own set of conversation questions we provide at the table, to get people talking about something other than wine." 707.341.6373 SomniumWine.com
“IT'S ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS AROUND GLASSES OF WINE. PUT PHONES AWAY, TALK TO EACH OTHER, HAVE CONNECTIONS, COMMUNITY. THAT’S WHAT I WANT SOMNIUM TO BE PART OF.” 30
