Stories of Lessons Learned and Legacies Lived

Dear Reader,

In this issue, Carmel City Lifestyle asked a handful of local leaders and businessmen to tell us about someone who inspired them. Among the parents and leaders named was Purdue Men's Basketball Coach Matt Painter who talked with us about the lessons he has learned, and taught others, through adversity. We also talked with Dr. Broc Sheets of Prana Chiropractic about the need for men to be open to seeking healthcare and honest about their needs. And, just to lighten it up and cool it off, we share some cool local brews and recipes to up your grilling game.

But Father's Day is about more than cook-outs with Dad. The stories of the men in our lives can inspire us.

My father tells stories about taking apart a car engine and putting it back together for fun as a child. To this day, there are very few things he cannot fix—cars, broken dryers, etc. My grandfather spent his career as a firefighter and saved people’s lives, and he channeled that caring nature into his family. My father-in-law spent his career teaching accounting at IUPUI and even wrote an accounting textbook. He continues to offer sound advice and support to those in his life. While I do not yet know the chosen career of my three-year-old son Emerson, I know that he always wants his mom and showers me with endless hugs and kisses. There is a long list of men in my life who have nurtured and supported me, and I am grateful for the chance to acknowledge the important men in all of our lives.

Take this opportunity to let the men in your life, the fathers, grandfathers, teachers, coaches and mentors, know how much they mean to you. If you’re a dad, remember that a man’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words and positive actions have a long-lasting impact for generations to come. And let us be the first to say, “Thank you.” You are invaluable to the people who love you and need you as well as to the community around you.

PRANA CHIROPRACTIC PROVIDES PATIENTS A PATH TOWARD BETTER HEALTH

When Allie first met Broc Sheets, she was a nurse who knew next to nothing about chiropractic, except that when her mother had been in a car accident she had sought care from a chiropractor. Allie assumed that because she didn’t have any injuries, she didn’t need chiropractic care.

It took about a month of the two dating before Allie allowed Broc to perform a chiropractic adjustment on her.

“When I woke up the next day, I didn’t have the usual tension in my shoulders,” Allie says. “Everyone has normalized that kind of pain, so I just thought that was what happened as you get older.”

Broc describes it as a “common mindset.”

“But you don’t have to live with that kind of pain,” he says.

As Broc continued to adjust her over the next several months, a cyst on her wrist went away and she began to see her health improving in other significant ways, as well.

“I realized that, even as a nurse, there was so much more than what I knew about the body,” Allie says.

Broc had experienced a similar realization through personal experience a few years earlier.

As a football player, he had suffered multiple concussions leaving him with brain fog, migraines, vertigo and other symptoms that had become a part of his daily existence. While he sought physical therapy for his neck and back which helped some, he took prescription muscle relaxers and relied on over-the-counter pain relievers to get through the day.

Broc had been told there was really nothing more he could do … until he went with his father to a chiropractic appointment one day.

“When the chiropractor began explaining the nervous system, something just sort of clicked,” Broc says. “For the first time in a while, with chiropractic, I had some hope.”

Fast forward to today, Broc and Allie are married and both have Doctor of Chiropractic degrees. They opened Prana Chiropractic in Carmel in October 2022.

According to Allie, most of their patients start off getting treated for pain.

“Pain has been normalized, but it’s not normal,” Allie says.

“Really, any kind of symptom is some form of dysregulated nervous system,” Broc explains.

Allie talks about three Ts in our lives: thoughts, traumas and toxins. When the nervous system fails to integrate and adapt, these stressors can end up stored in the body.

"Our job is to help you identify those stress patterns and what is creating the tension in your life," Broc says.

"Our big goal with patients," Allie adds, "is to increase adaptability to stressors in your life so that you can function better."

First-day appointments begin with a thorough evaluation.

“I think what sets us apart is that we are very catered to the individual,” Broc says. “Two people might come in and get two completely different adjustments—two people can come in with right hip pain, but it could be for two different reasons.”

The Sheets have worked to create an environment that truly reflects their holistic approach, a place that is calm and family-friendly.

“We are a safe space for people to come at any point in their healing journey,” Allie says. “We are trying to help our patients live better lives.”

“Here at Prana, we are grateful to see a good amount of men come in for care so they can show up as the best version of themselves for themselves, their loved ones and their communities,” Broc says. “Men deserve chiropractic.”

As a former NICU nurse, Allie specializes in providing care for women, especially before, during and after pregnancy, as well as for babies and children. She understands firsthand the benefits of chiropractic on these populations as she had been told for years, before she started her own chiropractic journey, that she would have a hard time conceiving. She and Broc now have two beautiful children.

“We love caring for families because we know how much stress is involved in raising children,” Allie says. “Parents are juggling so much.”

Broc especially enjoys treating young professionals who are fathers.

“Oftentimes in our culture, men have not felt comfortable in expressing themselves or feeling like they can actually feel what they feel,” Broc says. “But, we have noticed a shift recently. Here at Prana, we are grateful to see a good amount of men come in for care so they can show up as the best version of themselves for themselves, their loved ones and their communities.”

And like Broc and Allie experienced with their own care, patients often see their overall health improve in unexpected ways.

Matt Carroll, senior director of brokerage with ALO Property Group and co-host of Circle City Podcast, is usually the one asking the questions … and often the one behind the camera. Carmel City Lifestyle turned the tables on Carroll, asking him to tell us about someone who has had an important impact on his life. The conversation turned naturally to Purdue Men’s Basketball Coach Matt Painter and lessons learned amidst adversity. Carroll grew up in Guatemala City and lived the first 14 years of his life in Latin America and the U.K. before

moving to the Denver area. When he graduated from high school, he was listed in the top 100 basketball players and had 22 college offers. Carroll says he chose Purdue because of the combination of the academic rigor and the tradition, as well as for the opportunity to play in the Big 10 under Gene Keady, who coached the Purdue men’s basketball team from 1980 to 2005. But with Coach Keady retiring in 2005, that meant Carroll had a new head coach for his senior year. That coach would be Matt Painter.

A home-grown Hoosier, Painter was born in Fort Wayne. He fondly remembers playing basketball in a league in Muncie as a third grader. Like Carroll, he went on to play for Keady at Purdue, from 1989 to 1993. His final year, the Boilermakers finished first in the Big 10. He returned to his alma mater in 2004 as an assistant coach, moving into the men’s head coaching position the following year.

“It was a difficult season,” Painter recalls. “We were not winning a lot of games. It’s kind of part of the process when you take over a program. It was good and bad. You don’t like going through it, but you learn a lot about yourself in the struggle.”

Carroll recognizes the value of having someone like Painter walk with him through challenging seasons.

“What stands out to me was learning what it means to go through adversity and to still have to stick with it and push forward,” Carroll says. “There’s a lot of growth that happens in those moments to be able to have something that was hard, because we did have a hard season that year, but to still find positives in the midst of all that. Coach Painter taught us important lessons about remaining resilient in tough times, and focusing on what really matters—becoming better people. That laid the foundation to understand how to push through those ups and downs of life.”

Painter credits his own parents as having been his biggest inspiration in life, but he also credits Coach Keady and others.

“When you look back at the sacrifices that your parents, your teachers, your

coaches made, when you start raising your own kids, you see it,” Painter says.

Though Carroll hasn’t pursued a career in basketball or coaching, he has carried the lessons he learned into his personal and professional life. Now as a dad, Carroll hopes to pass those lessons down to his three children. The message he reminds them of is the amount of hard work that goes on behind the scenes.

“The team’s recent success in reaching the national championship shows just how good a leader Coach Painter is,” Carroll says. “But a week later they’re in the gym and practicing. It’s the idea that you never stop working and the sacrifice of hard work that goes on. And to be able to show that to my kids is great, to have them be around other good men, whether it be the coaches or the players they can look up to. When you experience and see it in person, it impacts you.”

Painter encourages his players to keep that in perspective and to keep the big picture of getting an education, building connections and honing their craft, whatever that might be. For Carroll that has come to mean staying motivated every day and working hard for something you believe in that’s bigger than yourself.

Grilled Steak with Citrus Garlic and Herb Chimichurri

INGREDIENTS

• 2 tablespoons kosher or coarse-grained sea salt

• 1 tablespoon freshly ground black, green and pink peppercorn mix

• 1 tablespoon dried thyme

• 1 tablespoon dried rosemary

• 1 tablespoon dried oregano

• 1 tablespoon granulated garlic

• 1 tablespoon granulated onion powder

DIRECTIONS

1. Mix together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

2. When ready to use, drizzle meat with olive oil and rub a tablespoon onto both sides. Wrap with plastic wrap to help imbue flavor and marinate in the refrigerator for 2 hours.

3. Take meat out of the refrigerator 30 minutes prior to grilling as cold steaks result in uneven cooking.

CITRUS GARLIC AND HERB CHIMICHURRI

INGREDIENTS

• 4 cloves fresh garlic, minced

• 1/2 rind of 1 lemon, 1 lime and 1 orange, zested

• Juice of 1/2 lemon, 1/2 lime and 1/2 orange

• 1 tablespoon fresh oregano, finely chopped, or 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

• 1 1/2 teaspoons thyme leaves, finely chopped

• 1 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

• 1 sprig fresh rosemary needles, finely chopped

• 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper

• 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt

• 1/4 teaspoon finely ground fresh green, black and pink peppercorn mix

• 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

DIRECTIONS

Prep: 10-15 minutes, Rest : 2 hours Makes 4 generous servings

1. Mix all ingredients together into a pesto-like consistency and let rest 2 hours for optimal flavor.

2. Serve at room temperature over grilled meat or veggies for a bright, zesty pop to a savory summer meal.
