August brings one of my favorite editions of the year, our Kids & Pets magazine. Summer has given us countless reasons to celebrate, from Race Day and family reunions to Fourth of July gatherings. Each occasion has brought together the wonderful chaos that happens when extended families reunite. Cousins who only see one another a few times each year pick up right where they left off. We also have beloved family pets, playful dogs to curious cats, that become part of the memories, too. One moment kept repeating itself after each of these gatherings. During our bedtime chats, one of my kids would inevitably say, “I wish we lived here,” or “I wish they lived closer.” It struck me that they want what we all want. We all want more time and connection with the people we love most. It’s a simple reminder to savor these special occasions and the moments we get to share, because they’re never quite long enough. These moments remind me of the immeasurable joy that both children and pets bring to our lives. They have a way of making ordinary days more meaningful and celebrations even more memorable. In this edition, we suggest a couple of places at which to make unique memories, including a railbike adventure and practicing yoga with puppies or goats. We also cover why it's so essential to start early with the dental health of children and how to assist youths with establishing their own financial accounts. As you turn the pages, let this publication be a reminder to look beyond the extra noise, muddy paw prints, toys on the floor and inevitable messes. Instead, embrace the laughter, unconditional love and companionship that make these moments so worth it.

Carmel Youth Assistance Program Team Helps Youths Build Life Skills This program assists youths 3-17 facing challenging life circumstances while residing within Carmel-Clay Schools boundaries. Through early intervention and community partnerships, CYAP supported 126 youths and their families during 2025, addressing unmet mental health needs, basic necessities, academic support and long-term stability. "We coordinate our community’s vast array of talents, services and resources to help youth and empower parents and caregivers," says Melissa Clapp, CYAP early intervention advocate. She states services are voluntary and confidential.

Celebrating 50 Years As A City City of Carmel communitywide celebrations are underway to honor both America’s 250th anniversary and Carmel's 50th year as a city, with Mayor Sue Finkam encouraging residents, schools, neighborhoods, nonprofits and businesses to create their own events and block parties alongside city‑led activities. City staffers invite organizations and families to register themed events online so the yearlong observance reflects the community’s creativity, history and shared identity.

Carmel Choirs’ Katherine Kouns Showcases Music Students In NTN Show Katherine Kouns, director of choirs at Carmel High School since 2014, joined the No Title Needed show taped inside The Hotel Carmichael in Carmel with Scott Osborne and Cindy Collins. Katherine's an accomplished private vocal instructor and performer, and was named by the Grammy Foundation as one of America’s Top Ten Music Educators in 2013, 2018 and 2019. She was a finalist for Carmel High School Teacher of the Year for the 2020-2021 school year.

ELEVATE: A Tapestry of Indy’s Communities Scheduled For Aug. 29 An inaugural, juried art show featuring artwork and breathtaking views of the Indianapolis skyline is set for Saturday, Aug. 29. Called ELEVATE: A Tapestry of Indy’s Communities, it's to involve 20-plus artists from local communities with multiple mediums and forms. The featured artist for this event will be painter Vernon T. Hallmark Orthodontics Experts Build Beautiful, Confident Smiles By Focusing On Three Core Principles

Orthodontics is more convenient, comfortable and personalized than ever before, asserts Tasha Hall, DMD, MSD, owner of Hallmark Orthodontics, along with Andrew Raber, DDS, MSD. "Advances in digital technology and remote monitoring allow us to provide exceptional care while fitting treatment into today's busy lifestyles," she assures. This orthodontic team serves patients at the Carmel location, as well as in Noblesville, Shelbyville and Elwood. Hallmark uses cutting-edge technology, such as an advanced imaging system for 3D X-rays. Taking goopy impressions has been replaced by intraoral scanners, allowing almost all orthodontic appliances to be fabricated in Hallmark’s in-house lab. A bracket system called LightForce allows doctors to place a patient’s teeth in their final position on the computer and 3D print fully custom ceramic or metal braces. Dr. Hall says it's important not to wait if one thinks a child may need orthodontic treatment, because "early evaluations don't always mean early treatment, but they allow us to identify developing problems and determine the ideal time to begin care." Every patient receives a customized treatment plan based on their individual smile, facial structure, goals and lifestyle, she says. "We use advanced digital technology to plan treatment with greater precision than previously, but what truly sets us apart is combining technology with personalized care. Our team takes time to get to know each patient and family, ensuring they feel informed, comfortable and confident throughout treatment," explains Dr. Hall. "We send educational videos, congratulations cards and provide bonus points and rewards for engaging in care. Our team views our patients as part of our family." One of the biggest advances, she outlines, has been incorporating DentalMonitoring into the Hallmark practice. Patients can complete virtual check-ins from home, using their smartphones, allowing the

dental staff to monitor progress between appointments. This means fewer trips to the office, more frequent check-ins by the doctor, more convenience for busy families, and the ability to address concerns sooner if something needs attention. "We're able to dynamically schedule our patients based on their progress, which allows treatment to move much more smoothly," Dr. Hall says. Technology also has helped this team make treatments more efficient without compromising quality. Digital treatment planning, customized appliances such as 3D printed braces made just for the patient, and remote monitoring allow them to make timely adjustments. "While every patient is different, these innovations often help treatment progress more smoothly and efficiently," she adds. Patient comfort is a major priority at Hallmark Orthodontics.

Today's orthodontic appliances are smaller, more precise and more comfortable than those used even a few years ago, Dr. Hall states. "Combined with remote monitoring, we can often make adjustments before small issues become larger problems, reducing unnecessary discomfort and making overall treatment experiences easier for patients." Hallmark patients also can scan their teeth from home and send specific questions or concerns about appliances so they can provide prompt feedback. Dr. Hall says exciting advancements are occurring in fully customized orthodontics, digital workflows and in-house appliance fabrication. The ability to design appliances digitally and produce many of them in-house allows for greater precision, faster turnaround times and more individualized care. "We're also thrilled to treat complex cases with aligners due to the precision of the trays and treatment planning," she says. Two questions most often posed to the Hallmark team by younger patients are: 1. “Will it hurt?” 2. “How long will I have to wear braces or aligners?” Dr. Hall says they reassure patients that while there can be some soreness as their teeth move, today's orthodontic treatment is much more comfortable than many people expect. "We also explain treatment length depends on each individual's needs, but our goal is always to achieve the best possible result as efficiently as possible."

Certified Organic, who verifies USDA standards. Their herd of Brown Swiss and Jersey cows is 100% grassfed and free to roam in their pastures of well-cultivated grass blends. They produce artisan dairy products in small batches using traditional methods, using minimally invasive methods to retain as much of the milk’s natural flavor, character and health benefits as possible. The group's "Evening Cow Milking" session enables guests to watch the process. They are held Tuesdays through Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. in the milk parlor, except during Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

ONE-OF-A-KIND YOGA: STRETCH, SNUGGLE AND SMILE

When seeking a unique experience, the creamery offers periodic yoga sessions with either puppies or goats. The objective is to merge the calming effects of yoga with the delightful presence of cute puppies or rambunctious goats. Erin Peckinpaugh, owner of Rise Yoga and Events, hosts these yoga experiences at Traders Point Creamery in partnership with the Humane Society for Boone County. "We host 18 sessions there between January through June and October through December. There's no air-conditioning in the barn, so we don't do hot months for the welfare of the animals," she states. Erin says they've partnered with the creamery since May of 2018 and have raised more than $50,000 for nonprofits.

Yoga with puppies and goats at the creamery was most recently held in June. The next sessions with both animals are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4 (puppies at 11 a.m. and goats at 1 p.m.) as well as Sunday, Nov. 8 (same schedule as on Oct. 4). Each session is 60 minutes each in a rustic barn, and includes beginners' Vinyasa Flow Yoga. Reservations can be made online; tickets are $35 each. The Humane Society for Boone County remains an animal shelter with a reported live release/save-rate of 97.04%. The facility is located at 5366 S. Indianapolis Road in Whitestown. "We started combining yoga with animals in May of 2018 and realized animal therapy accomplishes more than we imagined," shares Erin. "Participants are out of their heads and in their bodies laughing, cuddling the animals and stretching. It helps with socialization for the adoptable puppies, and provides a unique experience for the yogis. The barn at Traders Point Creamery is a dream setting."

The Nickel Plate Express in Noblesville offers unique, pedal-powered railbike excursions through the scenic, rural countryside along the historic Nickel Plate Road. This family-friendly tour uses foot power to peddle across existing Nickel Plate railroad lines through specially designed, fourwheeled tandem 'bikes' that seat up to four persons, or can be booked as single seats. Railbike seats are adjustable to one’s height and comfort. Seats also are designed for turning around to complete a roundtrip ride. Seatbelts are provided for each passenger;

infants younger than 2 may be strapped to an adult in an infant carrier to ensure a safe adventure. Each railbike comes with a small basket for bags, snacks and other items, along with cupholders for passengers to bring their own bottled water or purchase one from the railroad store. All tours depart and return to Hobbs Station at Forest Park. Each tour has seven railbikes or 30 seats plus two additional seats available. Beating the Dog Days of Summer with a Canine Treat

INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup of plain, unsweetened yogurt (or dogsafe yogurt alternative) • 1/2 cup of unsweetened, plain applesauce • 1/4 cup of water or low-sodium chicken broth

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it. Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week. Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.” Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered. After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.” The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.
