LIFESTYLE LETTER

A New Year is a Fresh Start The start of a new year gives us all a blank slate to envision the type of year that we want to have. I used to start each new year with a New Year’s resolution, but after learning I only kept them for a few months, I decided to shift gears. My new tradition is that I create a word for the year that sets the theme for the kind of year I intend to have. My word for 2024 is “magic.” I recently read about the concept of focusing on “glimmers” vs triggers. Everyone knows that a trigger is something that produces anxiety or stress. Glimmers are those magical tiny moments that evoke joy, gratitude or peace and signal to your nervous system that it is safe to relax. I know that what you focus on expands, so as I focus on the moment my kid's smile lights up a room, or that time a stranger helps me, I can train my brain to see the magic in the ordinary. I am looking forward to a magical year filled with glimmers! The January issue covers one of my favorite topics, health and wellness. In this issue, we hear from fitness professionals, a licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner, leaders in meditation, and two artists who work different mediums. My wish for you in 2024 is that you have your own method for evaluating years past and envisioning a better future. Whatever method you choose, I also hope this year is filled with magic! May you notice the small things that bring you joy and celebrate your “glimmers” too. Happy New Year!

HOW FLEXWERK FITNESS REIMAGINES THE FITNESS INDUSTRY

Building

Stronger Futures ARTICLE BY HILLARIE FINLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIANNA RICHARDSON PHOTOGRAPHY

AT H LE T E LIF E | FI TNES S

The fitness industry constantly evolves, shaped by customer preferences in the social media era and technological advancements. Among these pioneers leading the change in such a fast-paced industry is FlexWerk Fitness in Carmel, whose unique fitness approach revamps how we interact with wellness. FlexWerk exists at the intersection of fitness and entrepreneurship by offering an uncommon but refreshing blend of privacy, tech integration, content creation, and customization. We sat down with two of FlexWerk’s fitness professionals, Patrick Charette of Elite Fitness Systems, Indy (EFS Indy), and M. Selene Patrick of Never Surrender Fitness, to see how people can incorporate fitness into their lives and make it more than a fleeting New Year’s Resolution. Both professionals tailor programs to fit an individual’s needs, including training plans and nutrition that end with visible results.

PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCES

Trainers operating under the FlexWerk banner benefit from the fitness center's independence, while clients appreciate the privacy and personal attention often lacking in large-scale gym settings. Patrick Charette appreciates that he can manage his business ventures and grow without the constraints that often plague those working in typical gym environments. Charette often trains one-onone or in smaller groups. M. Selene Patrick trains her clients one-on-one and excels in group training classes. Her favorite thing about FlexWerk is the well-equipped, upscale space to conduct sessions. She can give each participant personalized attention by keeping classes under ten people per class. THE POWER OF CONTENT CREATION

FlexWerk understands the importance of content in today’s digital age. They encourage trainers to incorporate content creation into their professional roles, offering support through videographers and multimedia equipment. Not only does this allow trainers to market their businesses effectively, but it also provides an appealing and informative platform for clients to share their fitness journeys. People often come to fitness through social media, so by being a source of inspiration for Carmel residents, FlexWerk makes an often complicated and stressful process effortless.

TECHNOLOGICAL INTEGRATION

By embracing the power of technology, FlexWerk members and fitness professionals can aptly utilize it within workout sessions. With an option to display workouts, split sessions, and adjust temperature and lighting, clients get a focused workout experience every time. Gone are the days of harsh fluorescent lighting and loud noises of other gym goers. As for apps? “National Academy of Sports Medicine NASM Edge App is one that I love. Super simple, straightforward, and you can only use it if you have a certification,” Patrick Charette said.

18

AT H LE T E LIF E | FI TNESS

M. Selene Patrick takes a different approach. “I use the Everfit platform with an application for Never Surrender Fitness.” With Everfit, people can log their progress, be assigned exercises, and even see how to perform each exercise. “If they’re not with me in person, we can do it virtually. They can do it if they travel.”

KEEPING UP WITH FITNESS TRENDS

Staying up-to-date on the latest trends matters in a dynamic fitness landscape. FlexWerk encourages its trainers to monitor social media and pursue constant education, resulting in maximized outreach to potential clients. FlexWerk’s model breathes new life into the fitness industry, offering a distinct blend of privacy, personalization, content creation, and technology integration. By empowering trainers and prioritizing clients’ unique fitness goals, FlexWerk solidified its place as a revolutionary force in the wellness landscape in Carmel.

RYAN A. (EFS INDY TESTIMONIAL)

“Training with Pat this year has been an excellent experience. He’s helped me to build attainable goals related to my overall strength, nutrition, confidence, and wellness. His accountability, professionalism, and encouragement have proven to be more than beneficial; they’ve been integral to my fitness journey. Book an introductory call and session with him!”

MORGAN (NEVER SURRENDER FITNESS)

“I can't recommend my Never Surrender Fitness enough! M. Selene Patrick’s approach is refreshingly authentic – none of those cliché motivational lines. Instead, she focuses on genuine encouragement and tailored guidance. What sets her apart is her incredible flexibility with diets, embracing the diversity of cultures. Working with them has been a game-changer for my fitness journey."

MENTAL HEALTH IS A MARATHON, Not a Sprint

HOW ENDURANCE MENTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS REDEFINES WELL-BEING ARTICLE BY HILLARIE FINLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOGAN CLARK (MAVERICK MARKETING)

22

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

For Kayla Beier (FNP-C, PMHNP-BC), mental health is not just a profession – it is a lifelong connection intertwined with her early caregiving experiences. As a family nurse practitioner specializing in family medicine and psychiatry, her journey into the realm of mental health began during her childhood when she became a caregiver for a parent with severe mental illness and addiction struggles. These early life experiences proved a need for compassionate mental health care support, and she began her 15-year journey in the field. Kayla specialized in psychiatric nursing and became a primary care nurse practitioner focused on general medical management, weight loss, and hormone replacement. To expand her abilities, she undertook a psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins, where she gained experiences that make her the well-versed provider she is today. Throughout her experiences in different fields of medicine, she noticed glaring gaps that often hamper the potential for successful treatments. Endurance Mental Health is her vow to bridge these gaps, helping patients navigate the pain points cultivated in other practices. By promoting patient-centered care, she fixes a problem set by many other psychiatric methods. To Kayla, mental health goes beyond diagnosis and prescribing treatments. Her approach is holistic and encompasses multiple aspects of a patient’s lifestyle. Thus, she creates a comprehensive treatment plan and considers elements like diet, relationships, childhood experiences, and attachment styles that influence a person’s worldview. As a business owner and Texas native, Kayla and her family have found a supportive community in Carmel. They enjoy a culture built on safety, family values, and education, profoundly resonating with their philosophy. Kayla's journey and experience have culminated in invaluable advice for those struggling with mental health. Here are some of her essential suggestions: CONTINUED >

JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / CA R M E L

23

“If we do what is easy, life is hard. If you do what is hard, life is easy.” EMBRACE MICRO CHANGE

Kayla recommends embracing "micro changes." Kayla suggests taking smaller steps instead of making big, drastic resolutions like visiting the gym five times a week – which can often lead to disappointment when the goal isn't met. Start with going once a week, and gradually increase the frequency. This approach also extends to dietary changes, sleep habits, and other lifestyle modifications. Start with the manageable changes and then build up from there.

CULTIVATE QUALITY RELATIONSHIPS

According to Kayla Beier, the quality of your relationships often mirrors the quality of your life. Investing in supportive, positive relationships can significantly impact mental well-being. Seek relationships that nourish your soul, and try to distance yourself from negative influences that drain your energy.

BREAK FREE FROM TECHNOLOGY

Kayla Beier encourages reconnection with "old-fashioned" methods like reading paperback books and maintaining a handwritten journal. For example, paper books do not strain the eyes like a smartphone's blue light. People also retain information better when they read from a page instead of a screen. Kayla's goal for patients is to encourage them to disconnect from screens, digital devices, and virtual interactions, allowing for a healthier connection with themselves and

KAYLA BEIER

24

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

others. By lowering screen time, individuals can concentrate more fully on the task at hand without the distractions of notifications and other digital disturbances.

MEET METABOLIC ADAPTATION HEAD-ON

Suppose you’ve put in substantial efforts with diet and exercise without the desired results. In that case, Kayla Beier asks you to remember metabolic adaptation, the body's attempt to hold on to stubborn weight, which strengthens as we diet and exercise. This process makes losing weight harder with efforts that have previously worked for us. Each body is unique, and individual responses to diet or exercise can vary. Instead of comparing your progress with others, measure it against your benchmarks, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed.

MAKE MENTAL HEALTH A PRIORITY

People often see positive changes in the rest of their lives by prioritizing mental health and wellness. Those who focus on mental wellness often see positive changes in their relationships, work or school performance, physical health, and overall well-being. Steps to improve mental health include seeking professional health, practicing self-care and mindfulness, or engaging in activities that promote mental and emotional balance. By focusing on mental health, everything else becomes easier to manage.

UNLEASH THE POWER OF PERSEVERANCE

Kayla genuinely believes in two principles – "If we do what is easy, life is hard," and "If you do what is hard, life is easy." Choosing the convenient route can lead to hardships later. It might be tough initially to maintain a proper sleep schedule, work out daily, or maintain a balanced diet, but these "hard" choices will potentially make your life easier in the long run. Kayla reinforces the significance of perseverance and patience at the core of her approach. Whether maintaining mental health or attempting weight loss, the journey requires endurance and persistence. Taking control of one's life and steering it towards healthier habits and relationships is a marathon, not a sprint. Be patient, be gentle with yourself, and gradually make the changes needed to improve your mental well-being.

years, she entered contests. Her first significant contest victory was for Rand McNally Atlas, which started her journey in nature photography. “I had a huge 20 by 25-foot picture of a butterfly on the side of Hotel Indigo, and it stayed there for four years,” Radie said. Although Radie’s passion is nature photography, she’s also known around Indiana for her portraits and naturebased commissions for medical offices. One of Radie’s commissioned pieces is at Morter HealthCenter, a chiropractic clinic focused on holistic care. “I believe that nature is healing, and if you can surround yourself with nature, you can get lost for a few moments in that art.” Radie’s approach to portraits is different than other photographers. She relies on natural light and takes time with each subject so they feel comfortable and love the final result. “I spend 30 to 45 minutes with each person because the best way to get a decent photo is to feel comfortable, but having a camera in your face is not comfortable or intuitive.” See more of Radie’s work at https:// steinerstudiosart.com/

Humans are inherently creative. Art has been at the center of societies since recorded history began. It’s how we communicate and process our emotions. So it’s no stretch to say that art is crucial to wellness. Radie Steiner of Steiner Studios Art and Matt Hurdle of Matt Hurdle Fine Art work in different mediums and have different relationships with their artwork. Radie has been a photographer since she was ten, and Matt picked up his paintbrush when he retired from his corporate career. Both artists have studio space at Circle City Industrial Complex or CCIC. The building houses over 125 artists and hosts a monthly event on the first Friday of every month from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. People often start at Centerpoint Brewing Company or 8th Day Distillery and wander around the building with their beverages, enjoying the beautiful work.

TURNING LANDSCAPES INTO FINE ART

Matt Hurdle is best known for his contemporary, atmospheric landscapes and abstract art. After retiring from a 40-year career in industrial sales, he began to dream of painting. “I told my wife, ‘I think I’m going to start painting,’ and so I do it daily,” Matt said. His new hobby-turned-career involves waking up early to paint. Matt dubbed his paintings intuitive landscapes, as they do not represent real places. The pieces come from Matt’s mind and instill a sense of peace, calm, and serenity in his fans. By not having a story behind each painting, he hands the narrative over to the viewer. “It draws the

viewer into the emotion of the painting,” he mused. For many people, painting is a therapeutic escape, allowing them to immerse themselves in a world of colors and textures. Learning new techniques satisfies those who choose to paint, though sometimes creative blocks turn a hobby into a hassle. Not for Matt. “Maybe it’s because I’ve got the business background, but I have to get up and do it daily,” Matt says. His hard work has paid off because collectors across the country own his pieces, and he’s a juried Hoosier Salon and Indiana Artisan artist. See more of Matt’s work at https:// www.matthurdlefineart.com/

Un l o c k i n g Pe a c e a n d Tra n q u i l i t y HOW URBAN MEDITATION INCORPORATES MINDFULNESS DAILY

ARTICLE BY ANNALISA SAWICK AND HILLARIE FINLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY MAVERICK MARKETING

Kristy (left) and Tina (right)

32

M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

Amidst the fast-paced nature of modern life and a growing presence of stress, people need inner peace more than ever. In 2020, Tina Hallett and Kristy Paul opened Urban Meditation in Indianapolis with a simple goal: use the method that transformed their lives and make meditation accessible to everyone. Since then, they’ve empowered the wellness movement and shown impressive dedication to their practice. Urban Meditation’s environment is more than a place of peace. Its boutique-style atmosphere and lava rock floors accommodate up to eight people for 30-minute meditation sessions. Tina and Kristy’s mission is to make meditation accessible and understandable to all who set foot in the building.

KEEPING IT SIMPLE

Kristy and Tina believe meditation should feel easy, so they lead 16 classes a day. When students arrive, they are greeted and guided into the studio floor. Staff ensures they feel comfortable and relaxed, and all meditations are completed lying down. Students select a nine-piece crystal set to use during the session and may take those crystals home at the end so they can take a piece of the peace with them. Each meditation is carefully curated and should feel like a peaceful break amidst a busy day. Although Tina’s new catchphrase for Urban Meditation is “I want to be your 30 minutes,” she wants clients to focus within. Whether they crave peace, rest, happiness, clarity, or something else, Kristy and Tina aim to give clients the space to reflect and gain a deeper self-understanding. Meditation is for everyone. Busy professionals, caring parents, dedicated students, or anyone seeking inner peace can find inner peace through meditation. It’s common for people to want to become the best version of themselves in the new year, and focusing on the self and external energy can help people grow when they previously felt stuck.

LINKING THE MIND AND SOUL

Tina and Kristy’s focus at Urban Meditation is more than relaxing the body. The pair wants their clients to feel mentally and emotionally relaxed. Tina encourages crystal cleansing to purify the mind, body, and spirit to reset one’s goals or intentions. Another benefit of meditation is that it promotes long-term mental well-being. With regular practice, people find it easier to stay mindful and easily manage stressful situations.

MOVING FORWARD

Kristy and Tina’s passion for their work at Urban Meditation is directly linked to combatting modern society's stressors. It’s no secret that people want to shed their old selves on December 31 and start anew. A new year means new opportunities, and they love embracing the excitement of a fresh start. Finding peace takes work, with a constant stream of information being thrown at us. Evolutionarily speaking, humans simply aren’t built for the modern world. Urban Meditation allows people to drop in and relax during each guided session.

FINDING PEACE

Losing oneself during stressful moments and life events is easy, but meditation can help people see the bigger picture. An event that seems like a setback can mean new opportunities. “Sometimes, when things seem like they’re going wrong, it’s because something great is around the corner.” Join Krist y at the Indianapolis location at 8487 Union Chapel Rd., Suite 780, Indianapolis, IN. 46240 for a life-changing journey towards a higher self. At Urban Meditation, ever yone is welcome to join for 30 minutes and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere on their way to personal and spiritual growth. CONTINUED >
