LIFESTYLE LETTER

Together in Gratitude and Service November holds a special place in my heart. It's a month of personal significance for me as it marks both my birthday and the arrival of Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays. I appreciate the opportunity to slow down and savor a meal with friends and family, but more importantly, I cherish the dedicated time for expressing gratitude for the abundance of good things that have graced our lives throughout the year. One of the recent things I am grateful for is reconnecting with one of my passions – yoga. Having small children makes it more challenging to take time for things like yoga. Yet, last weekend, my husband generously volunteered to care for our little ones, granting me the opportunity to escape to Fire and Flow Yoga for a serene "Sunday Flow" class. It was a beautiful class with the right amount of movement, rest, and positive message. The instructor ended the class with a wonderful quote – “Misery loves company, but so does joy, and joy throws better parties.” I have thought about this quote many times since that class. You attract the energy that you put out into the world. I want to be intentional about attracting more joy, gratitude, and love, and less misery. November, with its innate spirit of gratitude, offers the perfect backdrop for such a transformative shift. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of togetherness, gratitude, and community service. We look at how a local roofer, Thomas Jefferson Roofing, gives back with its work with Habitat for Humanity. The issue lifts up local yoga studio Fire and Flow Yoga and how they improve the lives of people in our community. Finally, we look at how Allie and Maggie of BeelievAbility are giving hope to kids who were told there was no hope. We have so much to be grateful for in Carmel! We are deeply thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who passionately support numerous noble causes, making our city the vibrant and caring community it is today. Our gratitude also extends to our advertising partners who share our vision of delivering inspiring stories and celebrating the heartwarming news of our community directly to your doorstep. Wishing you and your family an abundance of gratitude, joy, and love,

Cultivating Gratitude

Discover the Transformative Power of Yoga at Fire and Flow

As the year draws to a close, it’s common to feel overwhelmed by activities and errands. Taking a moment to relax and appreciate abundance is crucial for a peaceful holiday season. Cindi Odle, owner of Fire and Flow Yoga (formerly Baptiste Yoga Indy) in Carmel, is an expert in this. Her experience with the positive impacts of practicing yoga and gratitude changed her life and set a positive example for her students. Linda Lawrence is one such example. Linda spent her career in education taking care of everybody else, but after retiring, yoga taught her how to put herself first so she could be a positive influence on people in her personal life. She gives back to the studio by participating in their Energy Exchange program, where she helps with tasks around the studio in exchange for free yoga, helping her to practice more and meet wonderful people along the way.

HOW DID YOU BEGIN PRACTICING YOGA? Cindi: I came to yoga after a car accident. A car ran a red light and t-boned the back of my car, flipping it one and a half times. I walked away with what I thought was just a scratch on my wrist. I was thankful to be alive, but I ended up with a severe concussion, which is much harder to heal. My husband started practicing yoga at a studio, and any traditional workout I did would aggravate my symptoms. I thought, “I’m gonna try this yoga thing and see what it’s all about.” I went to a really challenging power class, and I could do it without triggering more symptoms. It was a physical workout with a mindfulness component, as well as a great stretch and cool down at the end. Linda: I was a principal, so I spent my whole life caring for everybody else and let myself go. I was in terrible health, had no physical activity, and was married to my job. After I had a triple bypass surgery,

I thought, “Okay, the time is now.” My friend’s daughter is a yoga teacher, and in my head, yoga was for 30-year-old moms with cute little figures. Then, I saw a piece on TV where people were doing yoga downtown on the monument, and I saw people of different sizes, shapes, and colors, so I thought, “Maybe I can do this.” I found a chair yoga class at Cindi’s studio a year and a half ago. I still can’t do everything, but it doesn’t make any difference to me. It was all for me to improve my physical and mental condition, so my glass was half full instead of half empty.

WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS YOU’VE NOTICED SINCE BEGINNING YOUR YOGA PRACTICE? Cindi: For me, it’s overall health and wellness. You get strength and balance work from physical practice, which becomes more challenging as we age. We talk a lot about the benefits of breathwork for mental health and wellness. The main breath we teach is ujjayi breath, which entails breathing in and out through the nose. It communicates to your body that you’re safe and everything is okay. In addition to the strength, balance, and mindfulness benefits, I have several friends beginning to complain about the aches and pains of aging. With a consistent yoga practice, I rarely experience that. Linda: It’s the community as well. When I walk in here, I feel automatic acceptance. And it’s because it’s a place of kindness.

WHAT DOES GRATITUDE MEAN TO YOU, AND HOW CAN PEOPLE IMPLEMENT IT DAILY? Cindi: Yoga and gratitude go hand-in-hand. A yoga practice gives access to the present moment, and it is through being present that we can see all that we are grateful for. Looking back at my accident, without it and the subsequent concussion, I would not

have discovered yoga or opened a studio with this amazing community. I think it’s sometimes not realizing where the gratitude will come from in a challenging moment, and then being able to look back and think, “Wow, I’m so grateful that happened.” Finding joy in challenging times is gratitude. The more you connect with yourself and carve out time, the more you can open your mind to gratitude. It can be something simple in your day, or sometimes it’s something bigger. Linda: It immediately makes me think of what I’m thankful for. I’m thankful for my physical health now. I’m thankful that this studio and these people helped me change my thinking. I still care deeply for the people around me, but now I care deeply about myself. I work on the energy exchange team here, which means I do menial tasks in exchange for free yoga. I don’t think people understand how much gratitude you feel by smiling and telling somebody to have a great day. Those little words mean so much to people.

HOW THOMAS JEFFERSON ROOFING & REMODELING LLC MAKES AN IMPACT ON HAMILTON COUNTY

M UST SE E | HOM E SERV I CE S

Kindness is the guiding principle at Thomas Jefferson Roofing & Remodeling, and they believe everything begins with kindness. Through the company’s commitment to giving back, they partnered with Habitat for Humanity by providing their expertise and resources to build two roofs for homes in Hamilton County. The project not only had a positive impact on the community, but on the team who built it.

BUILDING A FOUNDATION OF COMPASSION Tim Gilliam, the owner, holds his upbringing and the values his parents instilled in him close to his heart. His father’s impressive skills as a master engineer and craftsman began at 12 years old when he built a stagecoach, though that was just the beginning. Tim’s father went on to build a home in Carmel long before the city became known for its roundabouts and welcoming atmosphere. “I learned a lot from him. He was very kind, so I tried to repeat a lot of his kindness with people, expertise, and attention to detail.” Tim explained.

The Gilliam family’s commitment to kindness led Tim to establish Thomas Jefferson Roofing & Remodeling, which upholds the value of respecting individuals from all walks of life. The company’s mission is to “create fun as we appreciate family as our team and those seeking our excellent service!”

CHANGING LIVES, ONE ROOF AT A TIME Tim’s staff finds joy in serving others, so Thomas Jefferson Roofing & Remodeling gave back to the community by working directly with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat built two homes, and the skilled remodelers installed a new roof for each at no cost. The project took one humid 90-degree day, but the result was worth it. Serving others was always inevitable for Tim. “I always thought it would be neat if those of us in our company who are interested in helping out other people could jump in on projects,” Tim said. “We were glad to help out. We don’t do a lot of new construction, so it was an interesting experience for us to go and do that.” According to Tim, most of the company’s roofing projects involve repairing or replacing old roof systems, so their joint effort with Habitat for Humanity was a fun and straightforward way to aid projects.

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE Ensuring satisfaction and high-quality craftsmanship is Tim’s secret to success. “We like to attract and hire happy people who are very good at the line of work that we do, and once people are well-trained and have a heart for customer service, we believe they can go out and do wonderful things for our customers.”

Thomas Jefferson Roofing & Remodeling’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity is only the beginning. Tim’s commitment to continuing personal and professional growth means he can funnel his positivity back into his staff and continue the cycle of care. “I think every day is a challenge of how we can go out and find something in this life that we appreciate, and those little things we do can brighten our day as well as those in our community.” The construction industry has an immense capacity to uplift and transform lives. Their partnership with Habitat for Humanity is a beacon of hope, proving that something as simple as a roof can symbolize security and freedom. With a commitment to building dreams under one roof or another project at a time, they invite others in Hamilton County to step in and create lasting change for the surrounding community. In addition to roofing services, the Thomas Jefferson Roofing & Remodeling team also installs siding, gutters, drywall, insulation, framing, and replacement windows. Their storm restoration and interior remodeling services make them a one-stop shop beyond roof installation. Tim always looks forward to seeing what he can create for his customers.

Believing in Motion Three years ago this month, an event occurred that would forever change the lives of Meagan and Scott Chisholm. On November 28, 2020, the couple’s 22-monthold twins, Lainey and Levi, were involved in a near-drowning incident. Lainey recovered fully, but Levi sustained severe brain damage. The Chisholms, who are local to our area, shared their story on social media. Their posts made an impact worldwide, as they detailed Levi’s recovery for all to see.

Generous individuals learned of Levi’s story, and they made donations to help with his medical expenses. In their efforts to help Levi, the Chisholms sought multiple types of medical treatment locally. As part of their search, they were connected to occupational therapist Maggie Pisano and physical therapist Allie Watkins. Pisano and Watkins were able to help Levi, and as it turns out, they would be changed by him too.

Through Levi’s mother, Meagan, Maggie and Allie became aware of a physical and occupational therapy method called dynamic movement intervention (DMI). After learning how DMI helped Levi regain mobility, Maggie and Allie came to believe that DMI held even greater possibilities for them. Allie and Maggie made a decision to found BeelievAbility, a healthcare company that would bring the benefits of DMI to patients in our community.

STARTING TO ‘BEELIEVE’ The name BeelievAbility springs from Maggie and Allie’s love of nature, animal-assisted therapy, and, of course, bees. Patients who come to the BeelievAbility office see sunny yellow walls and design inspired by bees. Bees are vital for plants to grow, and they a sign that beautiful things are ahead. Maggie and Allie have hope for all their patients. “The first step is ‘Beelieving,’” they say. And believe, they do. “The hope we’re instilling is seeing someone else believe in your kid, when you’ve been told by a handful of doctors that they’ll never do something,” Maggie explained. “Believing is huge, so it’s neat to practice what you love to do, and pass it on to all the families who need it.”

Children with motor delays can progress in reaching developmental milestones by improving their automatic postural responses during therapy sessions. DMI therapy incorporates the latest research on neurorehabilitation, technologies, and methodologies. Maggie and Allie analyze each child they work with and select exercises tailored to address their individual requirements. In a therapy session, the child performs exercises with a range of sensory and motor challenges. The exercises are frequently repeated until the movements become instinctive, leading to improved balance and functionality. Slow and steady progression means the child feels encouraged to respond independently and reach their greatest potential.

THE LIGHT FOR LEVI FOUNDATION Maggie and Allie stay connected to the Chisholm family by serving on the board of The Light for Levi Foundation. In 2021, the Chisholm family started the foundation, which now gives a $3,500 grant monthly to two families who have a child under 21 with a brain injury diagnosis. The money comes with no stipulations, meaning families can use the money for everything from medical expenses, to groceries, to family outings that offer a break from treatment. “It’s just a way to give back to a community that is being a little bit let down by our healthcare system,” Maggie said. For example, insurance companies may not reimburse certain new treatments—including those at BeelievAbility—so the money removes a barrier to accessing life-changing therapy.

The first step is

‘Beelieving.’

THE DMI CONNECTION Maggie and Allie are grateful to offer DMI at BeelievAbility—and for the progress experienced by their patients. Therapy focuses on gross motor skills, range of motion, balance, functional movements, and more. Children as young as one to two months can benefit from DMI, as it stimulates neuroplasticity in developing brains. Children with most types of motor delays can experience progress thanks to DMI. Maggie and Allie have treated patients with various conditions, including acquired brain injuries, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, dyspraxia, and conditions in infants related to premature birth.

ANIMAL-ASSISTED HEALING In addition to DMI, Maggie and Allie believe in animal-assisted therapy. “Allie and I both love nature,” Maggie said. “To us, animal-assisted therapy is huge.” This includes therapy by their very special dog, Thistle.

“It’s just a way to give back to a community that is being a little bit let down by our healthcare system.”

Big breakthroughs often happen for kiddos who want to play fetch with Thistle, and her calming presence is important as well. Thistle is always there to lend a paw to parents during appointments. Allie and her husband raised and trained Thistle to become a service dog. “You’ll have the dog for up to a year and then train them with basic training experience.” After Thistle’s first round of training, she went to another program. She did not pass the program, but Allie and her husband requested to adopt the perky pup, and she became a therapy dog.

“It’s kind of a blessing. I’ve never been so happy for someone to fail,” Maggie said. Animal-assisted therapy is highly researched and proven to help, so having Thistle around the office makes patients’ experiences feel more like home. Every journey starts from somewhere. Through DMI and animal-assisted therapy, Maggie and Allie have seen how patients like Levi can transform their quality of life. Maggie and Allie truly value seeing the potential in every patient become a reality.

MEET ALLIE, MAGGIE, AND THISTLE Maggie Pissano (PT, DPT, Hippotherapy Level A, and DMI Introductory Level C) is a physical therapist who found her purpose by empowering young patients and their families using proven therapy techniques. She came from a medical family, so she knew working in medicine would bring her joy. As a child, she sustained injuries that prevented her from her beloved pastime of horseback riding. To overcome her injuries, Maggie worked closely with a physical therapist. The experience sparked in her an interest in physical therapy, and today Maggie loves that she can build camaraderie with patients and their parents through care. Allie Watkins (OTD, OTR, Hippotherapy Level A, and DMI Introductory Level C) is an occupational therapist who loves helping

patients reach their full potential by thinking outside the box and giving her patients autonomy. She knew from a young age that she wanted to help children, after one of her childhood friends experienced leukemia. But after shadowing a doctor, Allie realized that she preferred the direct treatment side of medical care. Today she enjoys giving patients hope and seeing the positive outcomes of their work together. Thistle (Therapy Dog, Level C in Fast Zoomies, and Master Class in Cuddles) is a very good girl and therapy dog. Although her lifelong goal to become a service dog was derailed by cataracts, she found her purpose with Maggie and Allie. Now she helps soothe children and their parents during sessions. She likes to fetch pickleballs in her free time. Editor’s note: Information on DMI sourced through dmitherapy.com and beelievability.com.

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.

The French Country Table Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. The Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / CA R M E L
