Happy July 4th Carlsbad!

W

here will you wave your flag on the fourth? Will you join your neighbors for a backyard BBQ pool party? Enjoy one of our many beautiful beaches along the coast? Maybe head over towards the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort or Legoland to see the skies come alive with fireworks? Wherever you go remember to pack the sunscreen, something sparkling and be safe.

The kids are out of school so we’re all looking for fun ways to celebrate the Dog Days of Summer. You’re sure to find me and my husband Nick and our kids, Georgia Rose & Troy, Friday nights at the TGIF Concerts in Park. Anything to let them run some energy out while letting the parents enjoy some live music while catching up with friends, (and the entire community) sounds good to me. After filling up on fair food we’re excited about cheering on the horses at the track on Opening Day. We'll also be soaking up the sun and enjoying some time out on our paddle board at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon.

We’ve put together a July issue celebrating summer. We love entertaining outdoors and we found some easy tips and inspiration to freshen it up. We take you inside and upclose a local music gem...our very own Museum of Making Music and even introduce you to fun new way to enjoy the game of tennis with the SD Aviators. It's complete with comedians providing commentary and a live DJ. We also enjoy sharing some photos from some amazing events in our community from one benefiting graduating Carlsbad High School students and another with cuteness overload, as well as spectacular talent, from both the kids and adult performers, that shined at the Carlsbad Dance Centre Recital.

We love doing this magazine and we hope to continue to bring stories that are reflective of this community and share what is important to you. TRI-CITY WELLNESS CENTER LAUNCHES SUMMER KIDS FITNESS PROGRAMS Tri-City Wellness Center is introducing fitness classes for kids age 5-11 this summer! Participating in fitness activities builds a strong foundation for a future of health and wellness - exercise is a way of life! The average youth spends over seven hours a day on screen time.

Studies support if a child learns to like exercise, they will continue to exercise throughout their lives. Ti-City Wellness FUNction Fit Kids is

Top-notch professional tennis players battle in a playful and relaxing atmosphere which includes all the accoutrements of a sporting event party. The great news is that Carlsbad has our very own WTT team... reigning World Team Tennis Champions, the San Diego Aviators! The 14-game season includes seven home matches at the Omni La Costa Resort, beginning with the July 16 opener versus the Orange County Breakers and concluding on August 2. The Aviators’ will also host the season's championship match on August 5. WTT is a blast and the perfect family outing or date night fun.

World Team Tennis was founded back in 1974 by Billy Jean King and a few other noteworthy sports moguls. Based on the concept of gender equity, WTT is the first professional sports league to feature men and women on the same team. Home teams determine the order play for the events, which include men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. A combination of no-ad tennis, a 25-second service clock, and 1-point win margins, create an exciting atmosphere of consistent action. In lieu of traditional tennis scoring, games are scored by points, with winners being the first team to reach five points. Notable WTT players include John Isner, Sloane Stephens, Jack Sock, Bob and Mike Bryan, Venus Williams and Aviators own Darija Jurak and Shelby Rogers.

Last year, the San Diego Aviators were recognized with the “Significant Achievement Award” at the 71st Annual Salute to the Champions by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

In June visitors can get up close and even more personal with instruments at the “Summer of Innovation” interactive exhibit. While perusing the exhibit, visitors will see a variety of instruments that will open their eyes and ears to the many―perhaps surprising―ways music is being made today.

Carolyn Grant, executive director of the NAMM’s Museum of Making Music, said in addition to “Summer of Innovation:” “We partnered with local composer, researcher, educator and sound artist, Dr. Christopher Warren, to bring two of his inventions to the exhibition: “The EchoThief and the Body Theremin.”

The EchoThief replicates the experience of playing your favorite instrument in a variety of locations – from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Canyon – utilizing sonic snapshots of resonant spaces, she said. “You can virtually tour North America and play music in unique and exhilarating spaces without leaving the museum. “The Body Theremin” will allow visitors to create music using their bodies as the instrument tracks every move. These experiences aren’t available anywhere else in the world so they will be absolutely one-of-a-kind experiences for our visitors.

“They can take their time to experience an instrument; they can ask questions or just explore on their own and make the connection of how musical instruments not only shape the songs we love today, but also the times we remember,” she added. “Those who attend will be surprised by some new ways that sound is being produced, how easy it is to make your own music and how truly present music is in all of our lives.”

Another must-see at NAMM’s Museum of Making Music is the current spotlight exhibit running through Aug. 9: “The Photography of Graham Nash.” It is curated with Nash’s favorite photos, includes shots of Joni Mitchell, David Crosby, and Johnny Cash; about 29 in total.
