Lifestyle Letter

Happy July 4th Carlsbad!

here will you wave your flag on the fourth? Will you join your neighbors for a backyard BBQ pool party? Enjoy one of our many beautiful beaches along the coast? Maybe head over towards the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort or Legoland to see the skies come alive with fireworks? Wherever you go remember to pack the sunscreen, something sparkling and be safe. The kids are out of school so we’re all looking for fun ways to celebrate the Dog Days of Summer. You’re sure to find me and my husband Nick and our kids, Georgia Rose & Troy, Friday nights at the TGIF Concerts in Park. Anything to let them run some energy out while letting the parents enjoy some live music while catching up with friends, (and the entire community) sounds good to me. After filling up on fair food we’re excited about cheering on the horses at the track on Opening Day. We'll also be soaking up the sun and enjoying some time out on our paddle board at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. We’ve put together a July issue celebrating summer. We love entertaining outdoors and we found some easy tips and inspiration to freshen it up. We take you inside and upclose a local music gem...our very own Museum of Making Music and even introduce you to fun new way to enjoy the game of tennis with the SD Aviators. It's complete with comedians providing commentary and a live DJ. We also enjoy sharing some photos from some amazing events in our community from one benefiting graduating Carlsbad High School students and another with cuteness overload, as well as spectacular talent, from both the kids and adult performers, that shined at the Carlsbad Dance Centre Recital. We love doing this magazine and we hope to continue to bring stories that are reflective of this community and share what is important to you. If you ever want to share an upcoming event in our calendar, recent event photos/news in our "Around Town" or "Good Times", or want to let us know of a place or person we should spotlight...please feel free to reach out and email me. Let us tell your story!

WORLD TEAM TENNIS SAN DIEGO AVIATORS PUT IT AT THE TOP OF YOUR LIST OF FUN THINGS TO DO!

hen we think of watching a tennis match, the first thing that comes to mind is a long game with fans sitting quietly as their heads rotate back and forth following the ball. Shhh

don’t make a sound at service, don’t move during play….Well think again! World Team Tennis has created a competitive tennis format that includes the excitement and fun of any other sporting event. Top-notch professional tennis players battle in a playful and relaxing atmosphere which includes all the accoutrements of a sporting event party. Fans cheer, while enjoying excellent food and libations, alongside the ATP and WTA Pros competing and joking around on a multi-colored tennis court! They even have a live DJ! Fans are up close and personal to the action and players happily provide autographs after the event – even high fives during the match. The great news is that Carlsbad has our very own WTT team... reigning World Team Tennis Champions, the San Diego Aviators! The 14-game season includes seven home matches at the Omni La Costa Resort, beginning with the July 16 opener versus the Orange County Breakers and concluding on August 2. The Aviators’ will also host the season's championship match on August 5. WTT is a blast and the perfect family outing or date night fun. 14

Carlsbad Lifestyle | July 2017

World Team Tennis was founded back in 1974 by Billy Jean King and a few other noteworthy sports moguls. Based on the concept of gender equity, WTT is the first professional sports league to feature men and women on the same team. Home teams determine the order play for the events, which include men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. A combination of no-ad tennis, a 25-second service clock, and 1-point win margins, create an exciting atmosphere of consistent action. In lieu of traditional tennis scoring, games are scored by points, with winners being the first team to reach five points. Notable WTT players include John Isner, Sloane Stephens, Jack Sock, Bob and Mike Bryan, Venus Williams and Aviators own Darija Jurak and Shelby Rogers. Last year, the San Diego Aviators were recognized with the “Significant Achievement Award” at the 71st Annual Salute to the Champions by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

CARLSBAD’S MUSEUM OF MAKING MUSIC OFFERS MORE THAN TUNES ARTICLE DEBBIE L. SKLAR PHOTOGRAPHY ERIC LARSON

ew York may have Carnegie Hall, but Carlsbad has its own salute to music. Whether you play an instrument or just like to listen, NAMM’s Museum of Making Music should be on your list to pay homage.

This is not your ordinary museum but rather a spot where you can

go back in time; see historic acoustic and electric pianos and guitars, drum kits, brass instruments, accordions and ukuleles. As a visitor, go ahead and try your hand at playing modern-day instruments including a mandolin, banjo, and an electronic drum kit. The museum welcomes visitors of all ages, and is truly for musicians and non-musicians alike. Each day, school children and families, couples, “gear heads” and industry pros walk through its doors to immerse themselves in the exhibits and interactive area. NAMM’s Museum of Making Music is the only museum in the world that explores the storied history of musical instruments and products from invention, to creation, to market. The museum offers tours, exhibits and events year-round.

Carlsbad Lifestyle | July 2017

In June visitors can get up close and even more personal with instruments at the “Summer of Innovation” interactive exhibit. While perusing the exhibit, visitors will see a variety of instruments that will open their eyes and ears to the many―perhaps surprising―ways music is being made today. Carolyn Grant, executive director of the NAMM’s Museum of Making Music, said in addition to “Summer of Innovation:” “We partnered with local composer, researcher, educator and sound artist, Dr. Christopher Warren, to bring two of his inventions to the exhibition: “The EchoThief and the Body Theremin.” The EchoThief replicates the experience of playing your favorite instrument in a variety of locations – from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Canyon – utilizing sonic snapshots of resonant spaces, she said. “You can virtually tour North America and play music in unique and exhilarating spaces without leaving the museum. “The Body Theremin” will allow visitors to create music using their bodies as the instrument tracks every move. These experiences aren’t available anywhere else in the world so they will be absolutely one-of-a-kind experiences for our visitors. “They can take their time to experience an instrument; they can ask questions or just explore on their own and make the connection of how musical instruments not only shape the songs we love today, but also the times we remember,” she added. “Those who attend will be surprised by some new ways that sound is being produced, how easy it is to make your own music and how truly present music is in all of our lives.” Another must-see at NAMM’s Museum of Making Music is the current spotlight exhibit running through Aug. 9: “The Photography of Graham Nash.” It is curated with Nash’s favorite photos, includes shots of Joni Mitchell, David Crosby, and Johnny Cash; about 29 in total. Select quotes from Nash’s lyrics accompany each image, truly marrying his two passions: Music and photography. In the end, whether you come for the day or back again every month, it’s for the love of music that draws people to NAMM’s Museum of Making Music. museumofmakingmusic.org

count on others to be true to you and do the right thing even if it is difficult and even if you are not present. Dogs are loyal to their pack and display amazing loyalty to their owners. So Tip # 1 on the list of things we can do to increase our own happiness is to ensure we are loyal so we strengthen our relationships with others.

“TELL ME YOUR PROBLEMS.” Dogs are among the best listeners ever! You can spend hours talking to your dog and he or she will hang on every word. This is not usually the case for our friends, associates, or even family members. Tip # 2 then is to take time to listen to others and make sure you understand what they have to say before you share your point of view.

“LET’S PLAY!” One of the best things about dogs is their curiosity and desire to play. Tip # 3 – step outside of your daily routine, take the dog out for a walk, and pledge to have at least one experience a week that is just plain fun.

“I FORGIVE YOU.” Even if you come home late, skip a walk, run out of their favorite treat, or accidently step on their tail, your dog will not hold a grudge against you. Humans, on the other hand, can hold on to real or imagined insults forever! All this does is create stress and keep us from moving on with our lives. Tip # 4 – let go of bitterness and resentment toward yourself or others.

“I LOVE YOU NO MATTER WHAT.” Our work environment and educational system are based on the carrot and stick: “Do this for me and I’ll give you that.” Unfortunately, Garry McDaniel and Sharon Massen speak nationally on

RECLAIMING LOVE... REBUILDING TRUST ARTICLE JEFF REINKE

ove is the fundamental nutrient and primary pillar in the anatomy of healthy relationship. We are created for love…to be loved and to give love. The absence of love in one’s family of

origin creates identity confusion and the wounds of abandonment and rejection. All of our pain and conflict in our present relationships can be traced back to the violations committed in our families and previous significant relationships. We bring our pain with us. Without being loved we cannot love. Love says, “I know you and you are valued.” Trustworthiness is the second pillar in the anatomy of healthy relationship. Trust says, “You can depend on me and I will protect you.” When trust has been broken, no matter how big or small the violation, our hearts begin to close and our souls shrink. This is part of our natural survival instinct. Universally, every human being will instinctively take it upon themselves to eliminate the emotional pain caused by a loveless or unsafe relationship. Life then becomes a series of reoccurring pains that never seem to end. However, once we can identify the origin of our violations and name them for what they are, then we can learn the process of moving from pain to peace. And as we do, freedom is the end result and peace becomes the new norm! Don’t miss the opportunity to build a stronger relationship by joining the Marriage Getaway at the La Quinta Resort Sept 22-24. themarriageresource.org
