Drs. Paul and Gina Hodgson and their fantastic team at New Wave Chiropractic Center in Carlsbad attract some of the most challenging health cases from around the world.
Chiropractic has long been known to alleviate back pain, neck pain, headaches, and many other symptoms, however the real benefit is in getting your entire body balanced: physically, emotionally, spiritually, and chemically. When this is achieved life becomes fun again, and you can focus on your higher purpose in life. Visit them at : NewWaveCarlsbad.com

Carlsbad Lifestyle | January 2017
Why is a healthy lifestyle so important to you and for our readers? Dr. Gina: If you don’t have your health, your life experience is diminished. We have to nourish our body, mind, soul, and relationships to have the best life experience. The good news is health is dynamic, meaning you can change it, starting with small decisions every day leading to bigger and bigger decisions.
Why see a chiropractor? Dr. Paul: Most people hear chiropractor and they think headache, neck pain, back pain, etc. Most people come in when they are experiencing a crisis of health. Oftentimes, they have tried the ordinary doctor only to be prescribed a handful of pills from across the room after a diagnosis in less than seven minutes total patient time. This isn't healthcare. Chiropractic is SO MUCH BIGGER than just pain. It helps your body work the way it is designed to, the way it is supposed to. The biggest surprise for patients is how well their immune system starts to work and how well they sleep.
How do you find work/life balance? Dr. Paul: Still working on this one but as a hardworking friend of mine describes it, I like to be high tide and low tide - hard work with intense energy followed by complete unplugging, relaxation, and fun. This won't work for everyone but seems to be the pace I enjoy the most. If you need a break, take a break. You are no good to anyone burnt out.
Tips to not overdo it in January and then give up? Dr. Paul: Set REALISTIC health and fitness goals. Set an easy "have to" goal, and a stretch goal that would mean you have really been kicking butt! Keep the time frame short like 1-3 months and get someone to keep you accountable.
What makes your practice unique? Dr. Gina: Our practice is so special because we take the time to match our patients’ goals with their current situation. People sometimes live with pain until it gets bad enough that it affects their life. This is when they recognize a need for help and change. We do a remarkable job of finding the problem, predicting what it will take to fix it, and matching this with the patients’ short and long-term goals.
Favorites! To exercise together? We love to run the stairs at the Carlsbad beach and do lunges in the sand there.
Family exercises? Dr. Paul: Activities like playing in the ocean, soccer, football, tennis ensuring an active family time geared toward everybody's health and happiness. January 2017 | Carlsbad Lifestyle

RAISING THE BARRE
ARTICLE NATALIE NEECE PHOTOGRAPHY JK HALL

he very mention of barre might meet with resistance when considering fitness options, espe-
cially for someone looking for a new exercise regimen. Many conjure perfect ballet poses and levels of finesse that are intimidating. Little do they know, the technique behind barre classes requires nothing more than motivation and commitment to explore a tried and tested fitness method that has a loyal fan following across the country. “Pure Barre classes are for every body type and the music really helps keep you going! says Katy Homyk, owner of Pure Barre Carlsbad, which opened November 2015 and recently celebrated their oneyear anniversary (see pictures in our Good Times).

Katy Homyk leads a class at the Pure Barre Carlsbad studio
She has helped many women in the community lose weight and feel strong through Pure Barre’s total body workout classes - low impact but high intensity to help burn fat and sculpt muscles. You work your body to fatigue then stretch out every muscle. This helps to tone your body by slowly burning calories; the barre is used for stability. Each class has the same format but offers a different challenge. An upcoming fitness challenge at the Pure Barre Carlsbad studio is 17 classes in 30 days! When clients reach their goal of 100 classes, they get to sign the barre – a great motivator for regular clients to reach their goals, and be recognized in the barre ‘Hall of Fame’ for their efforts toward a healthy and fit lifestyle. One student to reach the 100-class mark, Marion says, “I was introduced to Pure Barre Carlsbad in December 2015. I decided to try one class and find out what it was all about. It didn’t take long before I was hooked, and I love my 55 minutes tucking, toning, burning and stretching each day with great new friends that are also encouraging and inspiring.” “Our main goal is to make women feel confident in their own skin, I love inspiring clients to work to be the best version of themselves,” says Homyk, who was introduced to barre classes by a friend training to be a teacher. After the initial shock of her first class, Homyk fell in love with the technique - the music, the challenge and the results were enough to keep her coming back for more. “I initially wanted to teach to inspire other clients the way my teachers inspired me. Now I continue to teach, because my clients inspire me with each obstacle they overcome and each milestone they hit.” A regular at the Pure Barre Carlsbad studio, Erin is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2012, at the age of 35. “Treatment started right away with radiation and chemotherapy lasting for over a year. I was feeling frustrated not being able to run, lift weights or do most cardio workouts anymore. My friend suggested I try Pure Barre. I was hesitant but with a few modifications, I completed and loved my first class. It has been a very long road to recovery but since joining the Pure Barre family, I have become stronger and stronger everyday.” “My favorite part about what I do is my love for fitness and seeing client results,” says Homyk. “I love being a part of their healthy journey. I’m inspired by their success for a happier and healthier lifestyle!” PureBarre.com/CA-Carlsbad

ounded in 2007, Pacific Ridge School, a private independent college prep school in Carlsbad’s Bressi Ranch, is the realization of a vision held by a group of parents and community members who wanted to provide students with an innovative and first-rate educational experience. “Our mission is to foster academic excellence, ethical responsibility and global engagement,” says Alison Behr, Director of Service Learning. With a student to teacher ratio of 8:1, an enrollment of less than 600 students, a modern 14.5-acre campus that includes arts studios, an audio and video digital hub, a state-of-theart athletic facility and a curriculum that exceeds the University of California requirements for admission, the mission is achieved every single day. Students study history, math, science, English, foreign languages and the arts just as any other 7th to 12th grader would, but the similarity ends there. Educators here teach those subjects seated around an oval-shaped Harkness table, face-to-face with their students (15 per class), more like a seminar than a traditional classroom. And the educational experience extends beyond the class - through the Service Learning program, students learn the importance of community involvement, locally and globally. “Service is part of learning. When you learn about people and cultures that are different from you, you learn about yourself,” Behr says. Service learning at Pacific Ridge progresses as the students move from one grade to the next. Currently, 7th and 8th graders are working with local groups, charities, schools and organizations such as the San Marcos chapter of the Arc of San Diego, Head Start, ActivCare Retirement at Bressi Ranch, County of San Diego Animal Services and Jefferson Elementary School. “In these grades, the focus is on student involvement through service and action, which includes self-reflection and connecting the service to what is being taught in the classroom.” The emphasis in the early grades is exposure to local communities and issues. Collaboration and leadership are taught in grade 9, and the program becomes completely student-run by grade 10. Through groups like New Ocean Blue, a non-profit created in 2012 by two students to educate local youth and the community about plastics pollution, and Global School Connections, another student-created non-profit dedicated to aiding impoverished schools around the world, current students learn about social justice, leadership and design thinking. “There are 25 groups in high school and 10
independent groups,” says Behr. “The key to our success is that we have the time. Our students spend 80 minutes every week working on service learning. The program is required in grades 7-10. Students may opt out in grade 11 but 85 percent choose to stay.” Ava Embry is a senior and leads a service-learning group that provides STEM workshops to local elementary schools. The group is also raising funds to build a school in Nicaragua. “I’ve learned leadership skills. I know it sounds cliché, but it has helped me a lot. In middle school, I was a lot quieter but service learning helped me work on leadership and learn how to make connections. I am comfortable reaching out to adults and leaders of organizations that I might have otherwise been afraid to before participating in service learning. It’s helped me make deeper connections in the community.” Over 90 percent of Pacific Ridge students go on end-of-year trips, ranging from locales in the U.S. such as Yosemite and Big Bear to Thailand, Italy and India. “The trips all have themes, and service is a big component,” shares Behr. Students learn that to affect change and solve problems, they must ask fundamental questions. “When you start with empathy, which is what our students learn beginning in 7th grade, you’re able to move from there to ask the right questions, like ‘what does someone else really need?’ as opposed to just assuming you know.” Behr adds that parents are attracted to the school’s “newness” as well as the service-learning program. “Service learning is woven into the entire academic experience. We are a unique school, particularly
our global program, which broadens everyone’s view of the world, whether students or faculty.” She encourages interested families to attend the winter open house January 7. Admissions and tuition assistance applications are due February 3. PacificRidge.org

Winter Garden Success ARTICLE GARY JONES PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
F
or some, “winter garden success” may seem like a rather vague phrase. If you’re a recent transplant to Southern California that’s understandable. If not, you owe it to yourself to know exactly what it means, and that’s easy to do. First, remember that our gloriously warm, Mediterranean-climate winter weather is why we live here and we can be gardening all 12 months of the year. Furthermore, winter days are a joy outdoors. What’s more pleasant than having your hands in the soil and the gently warm sun on your back? Plus, there’s a peace that pervades the air during winter, almost forcing you to slow down and closely observe and enjoy plants and flowers. There are two types of winter gardening: decorative and edible. There’s been a lot written about cool-season kitchen gardens. As easy and rewarding as they are, they don’t get the action that summer gardens get. Winter edibles (it’s a whole new palette!) are quick, simple and free of warm-season veggie problems.
24
Carlsbad Lifestyle | January 2017
If you’re a salad lover, then winter gardening is for you. Leaf crops of all kinds flourish December through March. So do root veggies like beets, carrots and radishes and cole crops like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale. And don’t forget English and snap peas and fava beans. All cool-season crops are easily—and best—grown from seeds. If you keep seeds evenly moist after planting until they form their second set of leaves, you can’t fail. However, if you need instant gratification, then plant seedlings from packs. But you won’t find the wonderful array of heirloom (yellow or purple carrots, golden and striped beets!) vegetables you’ll find in the seed department. Your only kitchen garden nemeses during winter are snails (and slugs) and caterpillars. Since we’ve had so little water the last few years, snails should be scarce this winter. Spray BT (completely organic) to get rid of
caterpillars. Cool-season crops are so fast, that you can have multiple waves of planting and harvesting. Amend your soil well and add an organic starter food with each planting. Like kitchen gardens, ornamental winter gardens get short thrift, too: a few token pansies, poppies, primroses and stock get tucked in here and there. But there’s so much more. Turn those tomato cages upside down and plant seedlings of climbing sweet peas in the center. You’ll have tuteurs of very fragrant cutting flowers. Bright blue borage is an especially beautiful winter herb with edible flowers. Nurseries, such as Armstrong Garden Centers, carry packs of the beautiful winter flower, Schizanthus, with feathery foliage and exotic and colorful flowers. Another bright gem is annual mimulus, in red, orange, white and yellow. ‘Senetti’ is a wonderful, patented version of Pericallis or cineraria. Plants form two-foot mounds that
are covered with strong purple, pink and lavender daisy flowers with dark eyes. Place it where it won’t be nipped by winter frost. Underappreciated during cooler months (it’s usually planted in spring), but a great winter flower nevertheless, is nemesia, especially the larger flowered forms such as the ‘Sunsatia’ series from Proven Winners. They’ll provide soft, fluffy mounds of perennial-like flowers all winter. Old-fashioned bachelor’s buttons are easy to grow and fun for harvesting bouquets. They’ll keep providing country-like blooms all winter long. Feed ornamentals and edibles with an organic liquid fertilizer. Some granular foods need warmer soil to release their nutrients. Remember, if El Niño rains take a rest, you’ll need to water. ArmstrongGarden.com

Local’s Choice Surfboard – Find a good board that suits your skill level. It may sound counterintuitive but a longer board for beginners will be more stable. Typically, shorter boards are higher performance (for experienced surfers) and they tend to be a lot less stable. For more advanced surfers intent on surfing anything from groveling summer slop to head high surf, there’s the Fling from SuperBrand.
Surfboard Leash – You’ll want a leash that goes around your back foot/ankle and ties to the back of your board for when you fall. Surfing is exhausting enough without having to swim in to fetch your board. If you’re a beginner, you’ll be falling a lot so get used to it.
LiveFamous.com
Wax and Traction Pad - You’ll need surf wax or you’ll be slipping and sliding all over that board you picked up. Rub the wax on top of the board, it’s not a snowboard or skis so the wax does not go on the bottom. Pay attention to the water temperature when you buy your wax, it will range from cold to tropical but you can probably survive with cool for most of the year. Personally, I prefer a traction pad for the back foot instead of wax for maximum grip for more power. Dollar Wave Club will mail these and other items

Wetsuit – Luckily, we don’t experience extremes in water temperatures here in Carlsbad so you can probably get by with a nice 3/2 mm full suit in winter. Summer time is trunk-able sometimes up until late October or even November. RipCurl.com

Sunscreen – Invest in the good stuff, waterproof is a must, and not that stuff you get at the grocery store. It will run into your eyes immediately and it’s no fun trying to surf while your eyes sting like you just rubbed a jalapeño in them.
Raw-ElementsUSA.MyShopifycom Future Fins - Fin design has become an area of intensive innovation in surfing, and fins are now available in different templates and materials.. Some surfers will carry multiple fin sets to the beach and decide which ones to ride when they see the conditions.
