Summertime Lovin' W

hen the weather's this enticing, I find no reason to stay indoors. Every opportunity to experience something new, discover another local attraction, is enthusiastically embraced. And when our beautiful city offers so much to do and see, why not partake? No doubt you will find me at the beach a few days but I am excited for all the great summer events coming up, some of which are highlighted in our Around Town department as well as Lifestyle Calendar, with interesting activities all month long. Its offerings like this, along with many other factors, that landed Carlsbad at #10 on the top 50 fittest nations of the country according to the American Fitness Index report! If you are working on your fitness this season, do stop by our friends at Title Boxing Club for a free first session of their whole body workout experience. Another way to stay fit is on the new eco-tours on the lagoon, while you learn more about this beautiful local treasure. A visit to the Army and Navy Academy set us on a learning experience of a different kind - one that intrigued us, as we hope it does you too. Read on to understand the way they are changing how our young men are educated to be future leaders. In this summer travel edition, we also have a few wine country getaways for your consideration, but if you are staying in town then our fun BBQ spread will take you through July 4th and beyond. While you are out and about savoring the outdoors, remember to stay healthy, happy and hydrated. Oh, and to also take your copy of our magazine with you...We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did creating it for you!

aving never been to a boxing club before, I imagined it to be Rocky-ish, with extremely in shape hard-core athletes fighting one another. Perhaps an uncomfortable feeling of competiveness in the air. But when I walked into Title Boxing Club, I was surprised to see a diverse group of seemingly happy people of all ages at all levels of fitness. Marketing Director Lexie Gascon confirms that this is not your typical boxing gym. “Title makes boxing and kick-boxing really approachable to everybody. It’s for all levels and all ages. It’s for athletes and non-athletes. And when I worked in other gyms you just didn’t see that friendliness, that openness. This is that perfect balance where you can have a family come in and take a class together and everybody is getting something out of it. And that’s just going to make it more fun. You can walk in here and you don’t have to be afraid of someone hitting you in the face. It’s just an entirely different feel than other boxing and kick boxing gyms.” “We have different clientele,” says Brad Schwartz, the owner of the Carlsbad location. “That’s what we need people to understand. It’s called Title Boxing Club and people think it’s a fighting club and it’s not. It’s a fitness center that utilizes boxing.” This was reaffirmed as a consistent stream of parents and teens walked in together to the packed class. “I had always had it in my head that I would most likely love boxing, but I was absolutely terrified to actually check it out,” says Paula Mazza, a devoted member of Title. “One day, my husband dared me to actually check into it. My youngest daughter and I walked into a local boxing gym. The staff was nice enough, but there was an overall vibe that wasn’t working for me. Several days later, I found a Groupon for Title. The price was right so I joined TBC in January 2015. Over time, with the ongoing encouragement of staff and other patrons, I have grown stronger and faster. I cant express enough what a game changer TBC has been. Did I mention that I have lost nearly 50 lbs. so far?” What is it about Title Boxing Club that makes it not only a great workout, but also sees a variety of people coming back for more? “When you look at all the different exercises, boxing is one of the top as far as burning the most calories per minute and using all the different parts of your body. Boxing uses all of your muscles as well as improves balance, cognitive thinking, coordination, plus uses both sides of your body, and complex footwork,” says Schwartz. “When you’re putting all of that together in one hour, you’re getting a lot of benefits.” Watching the class perform burpees, push-ups and sit-ups looked almost torturous. And this was just the warm-up! The funny thing was - everyone seemed to be having a blast. Especially when it came time to put on their gloves and start pounding the bags. Schwartz recommends two to three classes a week. And you can try out your first class here for free! They are conveniently located in Carlsbad, right off Rancho Santa Fe Rd. TitleBoxingClub.com

A Few Good Men Educating Tomorrow's Leaders

T

he sun shines clear and bright on the well-manicured lawn as young men in crisp uniforms take purposeful strides toward classrooms dotting the sprawling campus by the sea. Cadet Gianromano Piconi readies for his first visitor tour of the day, but not the first he has hosted as a senior at the storied institution that is the Army and Navy Academy (ANA). Founded in 1910, this is a college preparatory, military boarding and day school for boys, grades 7-12. The school was established at its current 16.5-acre beachfront location in Carlsbad in 1936. While known for its JROTC program and strong athletic focus, it is the Academy’s designation as a Gurian Institute Model School, and one of only ten in the nation, that sets it a class apart. SCHOOLING THE NEXT GENERATION OF YOUNG MEN – THE GURIAN INITIATIVE

“We understand how boys think and adapt teaching and learning according to this model. Students don’t “fall through the cracks” because we have a community committed to strong academic support 20

Carlsbad Lifestyle | July 2016

systems including: tutorial period, homework tracking, mandatory study time, and full college planning services,” says Dr. Lisa Basista, Dean of Academics. She is referring to the Gurian method - an interdisciplinary, team-based approach to working with Cadets and to classroom practices that are developed with boys in mind. Through their partnership with the Gurian Institute, teachers are highly trained in classroom practices that are effective for boys, and proven through research. This includes hands-on learning experiences, competition, and movement in the classroom. By examining CAT and PET Scans of both male and female brains, scientists have identified several differences that may impact learning. Social researcher and best-selling

author Michael Gurian, founder of the Gurian Institute, explains that these brain-based differences help explain why boys learn better when physical movement is incorporated into learning activities or require sensory experiences in order to learn well. ANA targets the unique learning needs of boys and creates meaningful learning experiences that keep them engaged.

PEOPLE AND PROGRAMS INSPIRING

A CASE FOR SINGLE GENDER EDUCATION

as mentor role models - the father or dad away from home teaching our boys life skills. They usually manage 30-40 Cadets daily.” ANA also offers summer programs inspiring young men and women to learn, lead, and grow. Camp Challenge Leadership Camps are co-ed camps held in July offered over a 2- or 4-week period for JROTC Leadership, middle school and high school grades, accounting for almost 200 attendees on campus altogether at any given time. This experience is offered outside of the school year and structure, and serves as a way for prospective Cadets to determine if they are interested in attending during the academic year. MG Bartell succinctly expresses the exceptional opportunity for exceptional young men

– AND THE SCIENCE TO PROVE IT

“Single gender education has been practiced for 106 years at Army Navy Academy but now there is the science behind it and a better feel for why it works – the importance and understanding of different learning styles by gender helps enhance the learning experience,” says MG Arthur Bartell (US Army Retired) President of ANA. Calling it the Warrior Way, he stresses the critical thinking, problem solving and writing skills taught to help the young men that enroll here to be successful, not only on campus, but in life outside of this educational institution. As a boys’ military boarding school, academic life inside the classroom and Cadet life outside the classroom affect the overall experience at ANA. What other boys’ schools lack are the boarding and military components of the program, which provide additional avenues for leadership and character development. Research shows that boys are relational learners and the boarding environment gives them the opportunity to learn from positive role models and mentors across campus. The military structure is the vehicle through which good character and leadership in Cadets is developed.

LEADERSHIP AND LEARNING

“When it comes to Cadet life, yes, there is the JROTC – the military side, the uniforms, the ceremony, but one of the highlights is our TAC officers,” says COL Wayne Ward (USMC Retired), Commandant of Cadets. “They are the trainer, advisor, and counselor – who act

that ANA symbolizes, “Ultimately everything we do is to support our Cadets. The passion here is palpable. We truly believe there is a need for what we provide - education, character, and leadership. Each Cadet epitomizes what we strive to produce here - a confident young man of character who is a leader.” ArmyAndNavyAcademy.org

ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND IN THE WEST • 273 Cadets from 10 states and 18 countries • 7,320 Academy alumni, 96% of whom attend college • 141 colleges accepted Cadets from the class of 2015 • 105 years of tradition and history • 8:1 student to teacher ratio • Only military boarding school with a surf team!

The

of Carlsbad AGUA HEDIONDA LAGOON ARTICLE RUKSANA HUSSAIN PHOTOGRAPHY ROBYN HILL

O

ur beautiful city now has another feather in its cap! Earlier this year, the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation (AHLF) announced exclusive eco-tours on the lagoon, in partnership with California Water Sports, to offer another opportunity to educate the community on the ecology, history, and use of the Agua Hedionda. Led by AHLF staff and naturalists, the eco-tours provide residents and tourists the opportunity to learn about the native flora and fauna, history, recreational and commercial uses along the lagoon. If you are a birding enthusiast, this is an opportunity to sight some Blue Winged Teal, Great Blue Heron, Cinnamon Teal, Killdeer, Snowy Egret, Willets, Black Skimmer – all waterfowl observed on the lagoon during the eco-tours. Guests enjoy the experience on tandem kayaks and all tours are capped at four persons to maximize learning, experience and exclusivity. Each tour lasts two hours and a guide on a stand-up paddleboard accompanies guests on this intimate experience with nature. This opportunity is unique in the fact that Agua Hedionda is the only lagoon in San Diego that allows for this type of recreational use. A trained teacher educates guests on estuarine ecological zones, native species facts, and more. “By gaining firsthand accessible experience on the lagoon, our hope is for people to feel more connected and become better stewards of the watershed,” says Samantha Richter, Director of Education at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation. “They learn about the flora and fauna that relies on this unique ecosystem and calls the lagoon home. Without a healthy lagoon, these species will not survive.

And if the community does not do their part in keeping it healthy, it will not remain accessible forever,” shares Richter. “The current activities we offer do not occur on the water itself. The eco-tours provide a unique experience where visitors learn about the flora and fauna through a recreational activity, only exclusive to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon.” AHLF also seeks to serve families with school-aged children who care about the environment, the watershed, and the local community. With that in mind, the nonprofit operates the Discovery Center (DC), an extraordinary collection of hands-on nature activities that allows visitors to “taste nature” by experiencing the lagoon and the ecological reserve that resides in Carlsbad. They are located on the Eastern end of the lagoon, and serve all of North County; open seven days a week. This beautiful community nature center hosts an award-winning Environmental Education School Program as well as lectures, festivals, bird walks and events throughout the year. They also offer summer camps at the DC to educate campers on the flora and fauna around the lagoon, taking them on daily hikes around the native garden and trail, and offering an opportunity to interact with the DC animals! Each week is differently themed, offering a variety of learning experiences catered to the different age groups and interest of camp attendees. Week 1 addresses “Life on the Lagoon” where students will learn how Native Americans lived, hunted, and used the land around this resource. Week 2 is focused on the ecology and habitat of the area. Week 3 is themed E-STEAM: Environmental – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math. Each day will be a different STEAM topic, all with an environmental tone woven throughout the lessons. It isn’t difficult to see the wealth of work accomplished by AHLF and their continued efforts to educate the community and visitors on the importance of our Carlsbad lagoon as well as how vital it is to protect and preserve this ecological treasure. Visit the DC today, enroll the kids in one of their fantastic summer camps or better yet, get on that exclusive ecotour this summer, enjoying a first-hand, first-class kayaking experience just minutes from your home!
