IS BANKRUPTCY THE END TO YOUR VA LOAN ELIGIBILITY? Is there a bankruptcy in your past? Or have you considered filing for bankruptcy in the near future? If you also have plans on purchasing a home, here are a few things you should know regarding how bankruptcy can affect mortgage approvals. There are two common forms of bankruptcy: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. A Chapter 7 Bankruptcy will discharge you from your debt without repayment. A Chapter 13 Bankruptcy is a consolidation and repayment of debt.
Chapter 7 When a Chapter 7 is filed it means that you are requesting to wipe out your debts to give yourself a “Fresh Start.” It is important to know there are some types of debt that can’t be added in to any bankruptcy. Furthermore, there are some types of property that you own that will be exempt from sale. (Research: Florida Exemptions) A trustee collects all your assets and sells those assets in order to pay back some of your debtors. If you have filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, there will likely be a 24 month waiting period from the date of your bankruptcy discharge before you can obtain financing for a home.
Chapter 13 If a Chapter 13 is filed, they are doing a consolidation of their debts to repay them back with a lower monthly payment to be paid back over the course of several years. In addition, this Chapter of bankruptcy doesn’t require the sale of assets to pay off the creditors. A trustee will be appointed to collect the monthly payment from the debtor and will pay creditors directly. Filing a Chapter 13 bankruptcy means you will most likely have to wait for 12 months from the date of your discharge in order to acquire financing for a home.
While you Wait It’s important to do a couple of things while waiting the 12-24 months to obtain financing for your new home. • Make sure you pay your bills on time to reestablish your credit. Show your lender that you are dedicated to home ownership. • If you have one credit card that has never been late, try and keep it out of the bankruptcy and continue to use it and pay it on time. • Monitor your credit score for free at www.annualcreditreport.com. • Keep in mind that the standard is two years of employment at the same job or type of job. • Don’t pay for a credit repair service. Instead, reach out to the Lighthouse Program, 888-392-7421, and receive free personalized assistance and guidance on how to improve your credit.
As a lifelong Florida resident, I have spent almost thirty years helping all types of people become homeowners. The gratitude that my clients have shown me is my greatest reward. My background in mortgage processing, underwriting, servicing and construction allows me to focus on the important details to get your loan closed quickly without surprises.

For the Ladies
C
alling all ladies, this issue is for you! What better month to celebrate the fabulous, fierce females that call Cape Coral home? Of course May is Mother's Day, but I think it's a shame to only give this holiday just one day. So, we've decided to dedicated the entire issue to you! I mean, I think we all deserve to be put on a golden throne, carried through shopping centers, while drinking champaign and having rose petals thrown at us, but that's just me!
Now, we are all in different stages of our Motherhood. Maybe you are a young mom reading this between diaper changes, soccer games and packing lunches. Perhaps you are a recent empty-nester who is dealing with your kids finally flying the coop and going to college? Maybe you are whooping it up in the Grandma years; visiting and spoiling your kids occasionally and finding time for your own new hobbies, friends and interests. Even if you've never had children, more than likely you are mom to someone. Maybe your furbabies (pets)? Possibly you are now in the role of giving care to your aging parents or elderly neighbor? Whatever a woman's stage in life it seems like we are always taking care of someone, right? We nurture, we give, it's what we do. Sometimes we take care of everyone else but ourselves.

Aside for being caregivers, we are movers and shakers. Women get things done! One of the cutest sayings I've heard was in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The father insists that he is the HEAD of the family. The mother agrees and says that she is the NECK of the family and the neck decides which direction the head will go! Sound familiar in your house? When it comes to our city, we have some AMAZING women in Cape Coral. It was so hard to choose just a handful to feature in this issue. They are philanthropists, businesswomen, entrepreneurs, board members and more. They truly make Cape Coral better by being here and I feel inspired by them all. So ladies, enjoy this issue and treat yourself well this month! See the Around Town section for details on how to enter our Makeover contest with Dr. Terese Taylor and Bruce Todd Salon. After all, YOU deserve it! And as always, thank you for reading Cape Coral Lifestyle Magazine and for your ongoing support!

ou wouldn’t expect a mom who had lost a child to smile so much. You wouldn’t expect conversations with a parent who no longer could hold her boy to revolve around “parties” and “dancing” and “singing.” But that’s exactly the kind of conversation you will have with Chrissie Lograno-Weinstein, whose 9-year-old son, Michael, passed away May 13, 2015 after fighting cancer for six years. But the positive outlook isn’t because there is no sadness. It’s because that joy, says Weinstein, is who Michael was. “To Michael, everything was a party,” she says. “There really wasn’t anything he didn’t want to make into a party. He loved celebrations, and he loved to be with people. You’d walk in the room, and he would just light up and say, ‘you came back to see me!’”

Cape Coral Lifestyle | May 2017
Michael’s love for life was manifested in his fascination with one of the most “larger than life” kinds of entertainment imaginable -- puppets. With a special affection for Muppet creator Jim Henson, Michael’s favorite book was Henson’s biography. He also loved Sesame Street, and even called himself “Ernie,” and his mom was “Bert.” Everyone in his family, including dad Matthew, sister Katie, and brother Timmy, had a persona. “To know him, you had to embrace his love for puppets,” says Weinstein. “When he didn’t feel well, he would go into charTimmy s ay s , " Hi!" to acter. It comforted him in a way that no Might y Mike y human being could do.” It was that comfort that inspired Weinstein to start the “Mighty Mikey Foundation,” a charity that contracts Puppet Kitchen LLC to build the Mighty Mikey puppets for child life specialists to use in their interactions with sick children. Weinstein believes the puppets can be used to explain things to children such as what kinds of tests they will have done and where their feeding tube will go. Weinstein sees the foundation as a catalyst to nationwide opportuMicheal with his collection of nities such as providing Mighty Mikey books Sesame Street and plush dolls for siblings of sick children. All proceeds from the murder mystery/masquerade/dinner party will go toward making puppets for the Golisano Children’s Hospital. This is the type of fundraiser Michael would have wanted her to do, she says. “People say to me all the time, I don’t know how you do it,” says Weinstein. “Well, I do it because he would want it done. He lived, not long enough, but enjoyed as much as he could. He would want me to help others, because that’s what he would have done. WHAT TO SHRED & WHAT TO KEEP
18
Cape Coral Lifestyle | May 2017
T
he Bureau of Justice Statistics reported an estimated 17.6 million United States citizens were victims of identity fraud in 2014. From 2012 to 2014, there was a 24% increase in the amount of identity fraud victims over the age of 55. Of the 85% of Americans who were not reported victims of identity fraud, 68% of those people shredded their sensitive documents. Shredding is a major way to protect yourself from fraud, but knowing what to keep and what to shred is the first step to security. When it comes to the IRS, holding onto specific documents with sensitive material can be as important as shredding other documents. Typically, any document that contains your address, full name, and social security number should be shredded as soon as possible. These documents include: airline tickets, bank statements, ATM receipts, and utility, cable, and phone bills-depending on your place of work. Although, tax records should be kept anywhere from three to seven years.
If you find yourself estimating on your tax returns opposed to using a reliable document to find the sum of your return, you should hold onto those records indefinitely in case the IRS sues you for tax return fraud. If a case arises, they will ask for your records. If you miss the tax return deadline for a specific year, the documents necessary to file the tax return for that year should be kept indefinitely. If you invested in a stock, bond, or another security that lost its value entirely, or, if you, for example, loaned money to a business and that business went bankrupt, you must hold onto the worthless security or bad debt claim for seven years. If none of those situations apply to you, it is still recommended you keep your tax return records for at least three years. For safety, keep these records in an out-of-the-way storage place, or, keep these records on digital storage options if space is of the essence. When the seven year deadline arrives for the records that are eligible to be thrown away, documents need to be shredded. Keeping paid cable, telephone, and utility bills throughout the year is unnecessary unless you work from your home. In this case, keeping these bills is important to receive deductibles from taxes. Once you pay these bills and you don't work from your home, shred these documents to protect yourself.
Documents like marriage licenses, divorce decrees, social security cards, birth certificates, wills, and life insurance policies should not be destroyed intentionally under any circumstance. These crucial documents should be kept in a safe place, like fireproof safes, or a safe deposit box from your bank. These records should be kept indefinitely. Keeping yourself, and your bank accounts protected is vital. Most document shredders shred paper in strips, but for added protection, cross-shredders are available that cuts papers in tiny pieces. Taking documents to a shredding company can be a cheaper alternative, as long as you watch your documents being shredded, opposed to leaving sensitive material in the hands of the company. On May 6th, D. Gates Wealth Management is hosting a community shredding party. You can bring old documents to our office located at 1227 Del Prado Blvd, South. Cape Coral, 33990. While watching your old records be destroyed, Danielle Gates will be available to guide you in your journey to financial security and can answer any additional questions you may have. Cape Coral Lifestyle | May 2017
F
eatured in this article are nine outstanding women of the Cape who have shared with us life events and influences which contributed to their success. These women love what they do. Some realized what they wanted in life early on and set about creating a path to meet their goals. Fate landed others in positions where they discovered skills and talents of which they had been previously unaware. For sure, they have many personal traits in common, but two commonalities stand out in their stories: determination and empathy. In the following pages, we offer you a glimpse into the inspiring lives of our featured women: their exemplary character and professional accomplishment.
TONIRAE HURLEY
IBERIA BANK
Raised by a strong, single mom who always told her, "You can be anything you want to be," ToniRae Hurley, Vice President and Branch Manager for IBERIA BANK, first wanted to be a teacher; then an attorney. "But," she mused, "life happened." Before moving to Southwest Florida, Hurley worked as small business relations manager at 1st Source Bank in Indiana. "That position allowed me to help other people fulfill their dreams." She identified with her clients. Her husband had owned a small business. "I knew what kept them up at night," she said. When Hurley moved to Cape Coral, in 2004, she opened a branch of Orion Bank (later purchased by IBERIA BANK). She participated in the Chamber's Leadership Program, an experience she described as "life changing." Passionate about community service, Hurley volunteers for many local government and philanthropic organizations including the "cause driven" Giving CONTINUED > Alliance of Women.

MILOFF AUBUCHON REALTY GROUP
MORTGAGE 1
Diane VanArsdale, Marketing Director for Miloff Aubuchon Realty Group, had been with the company for two years when the real estate market collapsed in 2007. "It was a huge challenge." She resolved to "step up and show my worth." Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, VanArsdale was inspired early in life by Dale Carnegie. "I came across one of his books in my brother's room: 'How to Win Friends and Influence People.' It changed my life." Another strong influence has been her mother, who emphasized the importance of being independent. "One of the most gratifying aspects of my job is mentoring the young women who have joined my staff. It's my way of giving back." VanArsdale volunteers on behalf of Ronald McDonald House Charities and Cape Coral Animal Shelter. She enjoys writing and has written a book about "pet friendly" establishments in Southwest Florida.
Tracy VanLandschoot, Branch Manager of Mortgage 1, Inc., is referred to by her team as a "Walking Donation Society." VanLandschoot explained, "I always give. I have been so blessed." Her grandmother was her inspiration. "She would give you the shirt off her back." VanLandschoot serves on the marketing committee for Ronald McDonald House Charities and as assistant treasurer for Cape Coral Caring Center. She is events co-chair for Royal Palm Coast Realtors Association and is an affiliate member of the Women's Council of Realtors. She once wanted to be a teacher. "I interned in a kindergarten class and thought to myself…NO WAY!" Later, she worked at American Express and CNS Bank before joining Mortgage 1. VanLandschoot and her staff, whom she describes as her "phenomenal team," helps clients with financing when other attempts have been unsuccessful. "If we can't do it, no one can!" .

DIAMONDS BY DIANNE
Tiffany Packard, Residential Sales and Commercial Consultant for Miloff Aubuchon Realty Group, had plans when she was in high school, "I wanted to play college softball. That didn't happen!" In 2004 she graduated from George Mason University's School of Business Management. Before changing her career to real estate, Packard worked for Option 1 Mortgage. During the financial crisis, "the job went away overnight." Packard says of her employers, Jeff Miloff and Gary Aubuchon, "It's a breath of fresh air to be aligned with people who do the right thing and who truly care about the community." She's affiliated with the Women's Council of Realtors and with Women in Business. Philanthropically, she's passionate about addiction recovery programs. "People suffering from addiction need to know there is a way out." Packard's inspiration throughout life has been her mother who, despite many adversities, "excelled by sheer desire and determination."
Dianne Young, owner of Diamonds by Dianne, recalls an experience with a customer who came into the store with a family heirloom ring. The woman had four granddaughters and wanted to know if the ring could be for each one. Dianne suggested, "Why don't you take each Granddaughter, on separate occasions, to lunch. Afterwards bring her into the Diamonds By Dianne and together, we can teach them about fine jewelry and design options. This way you and your Granddaughter will have a memory and a beautiful sharing experience. As it turned out, the woman did exactly as Dianne suggested. Each Granddaughter selected a different style for their ring choice and treasured the experience. Grandma with each Granddaughter cried happily at the conclusion of the design experience. Dianne recently hosted a delightful event at Diamonds by Dianne, which was attended by all of our featured, "Women of the Cape." She provided the gorgeous jewelry our ladies are seen wearing in the photos. Stop by and meet Dianne and her helpful staff anytime. CONTINUED >

Lassiter developed and led the first Key Accounts program for LCEC and cultivated strong partnerships with its top 50 largest commercial customers. She's been with the company for over 18 years. Actively involved the community, she is a graduate of Lee County's and Cape Coral's leadership programs, and is chair of Cape Coral's Chamber of Commerce. Her charitable activities include The American Cancer Association, United Way, Habitat for Humanity and The American Heart Association. Lassiter's advice to young women making their way in the world, "Follow your passion. Get involved in the community. It makes you feel great!"
Attorney Jennifer Neilson practiced law in Illinois for ten years before moving to Cape Coral and establishing her firm on Del Prado. She concentrates in estate planning, probate, estate administration and real estate. After six years of growing her practice, she has more time to devote to charitable causes; Cape Coral Caring Center, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Cape Coral Animal Shelter. Neilson loves her job. "It involves helping others. When people experience the death of a loved one, are grieving and don't want to think about practical matters, all they have to do is come in, dump everything on my conference table and leave. I'll take care of everything." Neilson added, "One of my pet peeves is greed." Coming from a tight knit family with strong work ethics, she strives to protect her clients, when they're most vulnerable, from attempts to take advantage of them.

SARAH MITCHELL
SUE CYPHER
LEE HEALTH
HAIR GALLERY SALON AND DAY SPA
"One size doesn't fit all!" said Sarah Mitchell, Certified Wellness Coach and Health and Wellness Coordinator for Lee Health Wellness Center. "First, you've got to find your 'WHY?'…your motivation." Mitchell's "WHY?" is staying healthy for her family. Her parent's emphasis on good health was her inspiration. "We took long walks every day." Raised in Tampa, Florida, Mitchell worked as a court reporter for 13 years before joining the fitness industry. While leading an all-women's group at a gym in Tallahassee, she realized she wanted to change her emphasis "from looking good, to feeling good." Mitchell has worked for Lee Health Wellness Centers for 6 years inspiring people to live healthy lives. She coaches her clients by using a wellness wheel. "The center circle depicts healthy lifestyle," she explained. "That circle is wrapped with smaller circles representing physical fitness, nutrition, stress management, sleep and mental health."
After moving to Southwest Florida in 1982, Sue Cypher, owner of Hair Gallery Salon and Day Spa, pursued her dream of owning her own hair salon. She loved Cape Coral’s sense of community. She realized the Cape’s potential and saw the need for a top quality hair salon. Thirty-four years later, she has grown her business into a full service salon and day spa. A strong believer in continued education, Cypher enables her team to travel several times a year, including their annual trip to San Diego, for extensive training which "assures the team's continued success and keeps them on the cutting edge." Cypher and her team strive to provide the ultimate salon and spa experience. Her colorful salon exudes a soothing, tropical ambiance. "I love coming to work," said Cypher. "When I walk through that door, I feel like I'm walking into paradise."

Trend Setter MAKEUP MUST-HAVES
• All Pink is a sweet look for spring. Start with little to no liner and one coat of mascara on top lashes only. Try blending pink eye shadow with a steep angle of pink blush. Line lips with light pink and sweep a shimmery pink gloss on lips. Leave skin dewy to complete the look. • Now, we can’t all rock violet lipstick, but more subtle colors still achieve the look. Berry blends and plum pouts flatter most skin types. Mattes push the limit, while sheers tone it down.
THE MERCURY IS RISING! HEAT UP YOUR AT TIRE WITH THESE TRENDS AND MUST-HAVE ACCESSORIES ARTICLE DANA L. SCIPPO
COOL SPRING BREEZES TURN INTO HOT SUMMER NIGHTS
• Dainty chokers are sweet, yet sophisticated accessories and very popular this spring and sure to last through fall. More is more here! Layer three plain chains and one with a small stone or symbol. The pairing is a topnotch look. • Chain strap handbags are trending in a big way. Pair one with a sundress and you’re ready for a nice evening out. Pair one with a cocktail dress and you’re ready for date night!
NECESSARY ACCESSORIES!
• Beach hats shield and protect our skin. Add some stripes and you have functional and fabulous! Many milliners are adding stripes this season. Bigger the better. • Mirrored and tinted lenses are essential eye-wear this season. Try a round or cat-eye design to add vintage flare.

Brunch TREAT MOM TO A SWEET COCKTAIL AND SAVORY QUICHE THIS MOTHER'S DAY
Strawberry Basil Margaritas STRAWBERRY BASIL MARGARITAS
Yields 8 servings
N
othing could be better than a poolside brunch this Mother's Day. While spending time with family and friends this Mother's Day, indulge in these delightful recipes. The sweet Strawberry Basil Margarita perfectly pairs with this rich and savory quiche recipe.
• 1 can (12 ounces) frozen limeade concentrate • 10 large strawberries • 8 basil leaves • 2 to 2 1/2 cups tequila Empty the limeade concentrate into a pitcher. Add 2 1/2 cans of water and 1 1/2 cans of tequila (more or less depending on how concentrated you like the flavor) Hull the strawberries, slice lengthwise, and add to a pitcher. Place basil leaves between parchment paper. Release the rich herbal flavor by gently rolling over it them with a rolling pin. Just a few times will do the trick. Add the basil leaves to the pitcher and place in the fridge overnight or for at least three hours. Serve in a tall glass over ice, garnish with a fresh basil leaf and enjoy!

CRUST:
• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/2 cup vegetable oil • 2 teaspoons white sugar • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons milk
Greek Quiche
Mix dry ingredients together first. Place all ingredients in 9 inch pie pan. Stir together with fork. Pat mixture into bottom and up the sides of the pan. FILLING:
• 3/4 chopped roasted red bell peppers • 2 cups fresh spinach • 1/2 cup chopped and pitted Kalamata olives • 1/4 cup chopped green onions (thinly sliced red onions work well too) • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley • 2 tablespoons chopped mint • 4 large eggs • 1 1/4 cups of milk (whole milk is best) • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese (a little extra is always best!) PREPARATION:
One: Heat oven to 375°F. On lightly floured surface, unroll pie crust. Line 9-inch pie plate with pie crust. Line crust with sheet of foil, and pour in egg mixture. Two: Bake about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, in small bowl, beat eggs and milk with whisk until smooth. Stir in salt and pepper; set aside. Wash spinach and herbs. Spin dry. Prepare vegetables. Three: Place vegetables in a large mixing bowl. Add parsley and mint. Add egg mixture stirring together all. Pour into crust. Sprinkle evenly with crumbled cheese. Four: Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until stiff. Remove from oven. Let stand for about 20 minutes before cutting and serving. Happy Mother's Day.

roviding a safe place for homeless animals is the mission. Making a distinct difference in Cape Coral is the vision. A group of Cape Coral business owners are fearlessly assuming this responsibility. Teaming with the City of Cape Coral, residents and businesses they are seeing their ambitions unfold. Â
EIGHT
WHO’S WHO? By focusing on a common goal these Amazing Eight are bringing our residents together through compassion, fun and collectiveness. Pamela Aubuchon: Director, JoAnn Elardo: President, Alvaro Sanchez: General Council, Gloria Tate: Secretary, Yvonne Werline: Treasurer, Jacque Miloff: Vice President, Judy Sowers: Director, and Annett Carrasquillo: Director/building/ general contractor, form the CCAS Board of Directors. Elardo says, “We saw a need. Our city has more than 180,000 people and we’re growing, but no animal shelter. There is definitely a need!” Possessing different professional credentials, the team offers unique contributions. Aubuchon shares, “We are all very different, but it works. We all bring different things to the table. We have a lot of ideas!”
will ensure our youngest residents are involved. Older residents will discover programs that pair them with the perfect housemates, combatting loneliness and adding quality years to their lives. CCAS hopes to facilitate Cell Dogs, a program in which inmates work with canines, and foster-home programs which focus on socialization and training thus increasing the adoption success rate. One thing the team promises: animals will remain in CCAS’ care until placed in a qualified, forever home. Aubuchon asserts, “Euthanasia has a place in the humane treatment of animals. However, a healthy animal should never be euthanized.” When asked how many animals the CCAS may serve Aubuchon responds, “It’s hard to tell, but it will be a lot and certainly more than we are now.”
PLANNING PROGRAMS
Most recently the CCAS planned a 1950s-inspired event at the Wicked Dolphin distillery to raise funds and awareness. "Each year we have more to offer and enjoy by all but the end results is to raise funds for the Cape Coral Animal Shelter in order to save more lives and give the city a service that is desperately needed. This year’s event was a huge success with an estimated grand total of over $100,000 in funds raised which includes a very generous donation made by the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation.” says Cape Coral Animal Shelter President, JoAnn Elardo.
The CCAS recently acquired a 99-year land lease from the city of Cape Coral. The building will sit just north of Sun Splash Family Water Park with 30 kennels, 30 catteries and plenty of green space. Extending beyond the physical structure and basic adoption services, far-reaching programs will serve not only the animals, but Cape Coral residents as well. A veterinary clinic and educational programs for the prevention of cruelty and abandonment of animals are all in the making. Reading and “puppy play” initiatives geared toward children
HAVING FUN, RAISING FUNDS!
CAPE CORAL A CARING COMMUNITY Aubuchon vows, “No small amount of time, talent, or treasure is ever wasted.” Everything from large sums of private donation to coin drives at local elementary schools help support the CCAS. Because CCAS believes that every citizen has a responsibility to their city, they hope everyone will partake in this collective positive initiative.
Aubuchon says, “Everyone that wants to be a part of it, has the opportunity! This is the just the start of something so much bigger. We want to reach out to extending areas and serve a need that exists beyond Cape Coral. We hope to make a marked difference to exist through perpetuity and create a legacy in our community.”

THE Thuy HOUSE
Growing up in Vietnam she remembers, “My uncle would bring a single item to our house from his farm… shrimp, crab, or a chicken. We would build a whole meal from a single item.” That foundation is still present in her meals today. Simple interactions and everyday occurrences along the way helped guide her and she lightheartedly shares, “I’m meant to share this gift of cooking. It’s hard to explain, but it’s been in the making and it’s just meant to be.” WHAT’S FOR DINNER?
WHAT'S FOR DINNER? ARTICLE DANA L. SCIPPO PHOTOGRAPHY STACIE DELACUESTA
Nghi started a word-of-mouth catering company, The Thuy House. She created a private Facebook page, What’s for dinner? Cooperating with Island Pho & Grill, Nghi uses their kitchen space and now caters larger events. The menu is most noted for Chicken Noodle, Pot-stickers and egg rolls. Noodle Salad is a favorite for those who like it hot, hot, hot! It has sweet heat and a can’t-put-your-finger-on-it deliciousness that has you wanting more. The spring rolls offer a burst of flavor and the chili and peanut sauces create the perfect complement. Fresh herbs provide a burst of flavor to every bite. “Growing up I never knew I was eating healthy. To us it was just the way we would eat. We added lemongrass and ginger, all the herbs and spices we now know are so healthy for us.” HOUSE CALLS
D
iane Nghi is a mother with six kids, an infectious smile and an insatiable love for cooking. Her passion for food began with a simple act: cooking for her family and hosting parties at home. “Everyone loves my parties because of the food!” Nghi says with a humble wink. Those same friends asked to swing by after work and pick up a meal. Some even offered to pay her. Soon friends-of-friends asked, “What’s for Dinner?” Nghi discovered herself on a food journey that led to her catering company, The Thuy House. Nghi says, “I’m excited to see the future!” BEGINNINGS
Nghi looks back, “God was preparing me all these years for this. I just want to share this gift that God has given me with others. I think that’s what we are supposed to do.”

Nghi shares her gifts by hosting on-site catering events and cooking classes. She brings girlfriends, couples, mothers and daughters and best friends together over a night of cooking. She also teaches technique classes. Most of her participants find that cooking is fun and easy! She especially enjoys, “… when a mom thanks me for teaching her to cook healthy meals. I like to think I’m helping people eat healthy and combat obesity.” Nghi thinks cooking at home brings freedom and autonomy to a family. Nghi shares, “You don’t have to eat something packaged for you. You are in control of what you eat and what you feed your family. With cooking comes freedom!” Nghi’s dishes are uniquely hers and one ingredient she always adds… “In my culture, food is caring. It is how we show love. I teach how to cook with love!” Find Diane Nghi on Facebook: The Thuy House. Coffee Talk LENORA MARSHALL : A WOMAN OF THE AGES
ARTICLE ERIKA SMILEY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
t’s a Wednesday morning “in season” and the French Press coffee shop at Cape Harbour is booming. Guests are standing in line to order custom coffees and couples are chatting at small tables. I scan the crowded café looking for Lenora Marshall. Of course, she beat me there. You don’t build the kind of career Marshall has by being late. Once she spots me I’m greeted with that wide grin that glows with confidence, warmth and optimism all within the first second I see her. Marshall is a local real estate agent who ranked near the top last year with almost $10M in transactions. But there are a lot of dots to connect between her childhood and how she got here. Her mother put family first and was a housewife. Marshall says, “Back in the day careers weren’t a big priority for women. If they went to work, it was usually to be a nurse or teacher.” Lenora finished school and ended up getting a job with the paint company Sherwin Williams. They offered to pay for her education if she wanted to take college courses. Marshall took some classes in science, but didn’t complete her degree. However, through hard work and good ethics, she continued to be promoted. She changed companies a few times, always within the paint industry and moved around. Marshall even worked internationally, relocating for years to Australia. She knew if she was going to make her way to the top, she needed to go back to school and complete her degree. Attending night classes, while raising her young son, Marshall earned her Engineering degree. What is most impressive is that she was a trailblazer for females in the boardroom. The first VP of manufacturing, running multiple plants across the country. In her field, she was a woman leading in a man’s world. I wanted to ask more to find out how she did it all. Lenora Marshall
42
ES: How did you end up in Cape Coral and real estate? LM: My husband and I bought a vacation home in Cape Coral. I loved it and decided to leave the paint industry and start a new career in real estate. I applied the knowledge I had gained in my past positions to my real estate business. ES: You are involved in both the Giving Alliance of Women and the Cape Coral Mayor’s Scholarship Fund. What are your thoughts on philanthropy? LM: We owe it to our community and our youth to give back. I feel blessed to enjoy living here and all the things that come with it. Sometimes I lay in bed and night and think, “What did I do to make the world a better place today?” ES: Would you change anything looking back? LM: Not really. But of everything I did with my career, my greatest joy was being a mom and raising my son. Nothing really beats that. (Lenora now is also a Grandma to 3 grandchildren.) She attributes a wonderful husband who was always supportive to balancing family and career. ES: What advice would you give younger women trying to start or build a career? LM: Go for it! If a door opens for you, go through! Don’t be afraid to step out there and do it! Words to live by.
