Here’s to the Locals!

S

omewhere up North someone is shoveling snow right now. Not us here in the Cape! The warm weather is a big draw for many who come here to vacation and play in the winter months. We all know the term “snowbird” and hear a lot of talk this time of year about “season”. While Cape Coral may not be quite as seasonal as other SW Florida cities, the roads do get a little busier and the restaurants a little more crowded.

Then there are those of us who live here full time and call Cape Coral home. The Locals! I will admit, it was a big transition to go from vacationing here, to living here. Florida used to be where we would visit a few weeks a year. Each day consisted of beach visits, dining out, shopping, ice cream and happy hour. Work was the farthest thing from my mind while I walked with my feet in the sand and smelled the salty air. I still look around at the palm trees and canals and am in awe that I live in such paradise, BUT it’s the daily grind. Wake up early, get the kids to school, work all day, cooking, cleaning, etc. (Minus the snow shoveling however!) While I admit somedays I still have the urge to play hooky and go out to Sanibel, the weekends usually pack in enough sun and fun get me through Monday-Friday. In this issue, we put the limelight on some of our locals! These folks are entrepreneurs who have started small businesses here in the Cape. They are contributing to our city and its economy with their daily hard work and perseverance. Some have been here for decades and have great stories about how they got started. So, wherever you are right now (the beach, the tiki bar or your office desk), we appreciate you reading! And I’ll say working for a living is a lot better when you don’t have to wear a hat, gloves and puffy coat to do it! Stay Sunny, Erika Smiley

3 SURPRISING THINGS ABOUT HOME APPRAISALS LOW APPRAISALS

Recognize the reason for low appraisals. • There may not be adequate comps in your area, so a less desirable community was used for the comps.

• Your home has a pool or high-end landscaping, which didn’t lead to a higher appraisal.

• Is the house stuck in the 1970’s, do some upgrades and updating of the home bring up the value of the home.

• Your home has a slightly smaller square foot than other recent sold homes.

UNPERMITTED WORK ON HOME

In order to do an addition that is attached, detached, or changes within the home, a permit must be acquired through your city. • In some cities, you must have a permit to have an outside structure, such as, a shed, garage, or any out building.

• If some of the work is not complete correctly or up to code It will be noted in the appraisal and could kill the deal.

SUBJECT TO REPAIR

Reasons why appraisers request repairs. • If the home is not up to par to meet Fannie Mae or HUD, then the appraiser may call for certain repairs to be completed.

• If something with the house is blatantly unsafe, the appraiser will call to have it repaired.

• Different appraisers may have a different opinion when it comes to what needs to be fixed.

• Appraisers specialize in value. They are not mold or crack

specialist. If they see a “potential” problem, they may put in their report “subject to further inspection.”

hile his love of chocolate is what first inspired Norman Love to become a chocolatier, it’s his love for family that inspired him to establish roots in Southwest Florida. Many people are surprised to hear Norman Love say that he never intended to open a chocolate company, as he was only “dabbling” in chocolates to earn some extra money after leaving his job as executive pastry chef for The Ritz-Carlton to spend more time with family. “As a young adult, I spent two years in France learning the craft of pastry-making from artisans who shaped their confections in a small pastry shop,” said Norman Love, CEO and Founder of Norman Love Confections. “The experience became the CONTINUED >

foundation for my career with The RitzCarlton, where I served as executive pastry chef in Naples and St. Louis. At 30, I became the corporate executive pastry chef of The Ritz-Carlton, a position I held for 13 years.” While traveling around the world and entrenched in the industry that he loved, the chef says he was missing out on valuable time with family. “My wife was raising our two kids without me, and I was missing out on all their school plays, soccer games and precious family moments. So in 2001, I made a very bold decision to leave the corporate world,” said Love. Love started with just a small shop inside a friend’s medical supply business behind the current production facility. “That’s where I began making ultra-premium artisan chocolates by hand for the wholesale industry,” he said. “Shortly after we opened, USA Today named us one of the ten best chocolate companies in the U.S. and people started driving around rural Fort Myers looking for a chocolate shop that didn’t really exist. That article quickly launched us into the retail arena.” A year later, Love purchased the property in Fort Myers, built the original Chocolate Salon and soon added a production facility. Then in 2011, he opened a second location in Naples. That’s also when Love began making gelato at the Naples Chocolate and Dessert Salon, and the concept of Artisan Gelato by Norman Love was born. The gelatoria, located adjacent

to the salon in Fort Myers, serves authentic, handmade artisan gelato with a Norman Love twist. In 2014, Love opened his third chocolate salon at Miromar Outlets in Estero. In October 2016, Love celebrated 15 years in business and expanded again, with the opening of Norman Love Confections Chocolate and Dessert Salon in the Terra Design Center along the popular McGregor Boulevard corridor in Fort Myers. With its contemporary design and comfortable seating areas, the new McGregor Boulevard location is designed to be a destination for special occasions and meetings, or just to relax with a cup of coffee and a bite to eat. “Opening on the west side of town has been a long-term goal,” said Love. “For years, customers have been asking us to open a salon closer to the McGregor area. I’m pleased that our newest location allows us to better serve customers from Cape Coral, Sanibel Island and the communities and businesses near McGregor Boulevard and downtown Fort Myers.” New salon offerings, available exclusively at McGregor, include locally produced craft beers, boutique wines and champagne. Artisan desserts and pastries, gourmet coffees, novelty products and Artisan Gelato by Norman Love are also available. The new salon is also introducing wine and chocolate pairings, wine and dessert pairings, special events and a Sunday brunch menu. As Norman Love has expanded his retail locations, the company has also boomed

online. Norman Love Confections ships its Signature Collections, Naked Love Cakes, and a variety of gift baskets, gift towers and specialty products throughout the U.S. The company has also enhanced its offerings to the business community with corporate gift-giving services and gourmet cakes, cookies and bakery platters for events and special occasions. While traditional consumer demand has fueled the company’s growth, the Loves firmly believe it’s the support from the community that has led to their success. “Yes, we are humbled to have earned tremendous national and international recognition, however it’s the local support for our chocolates and my family that we celebrate as our greatest achievement,” says Love. “"In fairly short order, the community embraced my family and our business, and that’s why giving back and supporting local charities is a priority for us. Southwest Florida is not just the location of our headquarters, it’s our community and our home.” That community is also home to Norman Love Confections’ 80 employees. “I’m proud to say that our team shares my dedication to the relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence, and we’ve been able to grow without compromising quality,” said Love. “Our business strategy is simple and straightforward. We come to work to be the best every day and to be better than we were yesterday. Our customers can look forward to many more exciting new developments to come.”

WHAT IS CYBER SECURITY And Why Should You Care? ARTICLE ANDREAS DOLLESCHAL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

n 2016 we saw a big increase of major data breaches (FACC, University of Central Florida, US Department of Justice, IRS, Snapchat, Premier Healthcare, Wendy’s, LinkedIn, Dropbox, Yahoo, Cisco – to name just a few) which impact’s most of the users and companies in the US. Leading agencies predict that Cyber Attacks in the nation’s private and government sector are expected to grow exponentially in the coming future. This means cybercrime continues to pose a serious threat not only to your personal privacy and security but also the U.S. economy. So, why should I care about this – you may ask? You may use a computer to store sensitive data like pictures of your family, passwords for ecommerce sites, passwords for financial institutes or your social security number. This data can also reside on other devices like your smartphone, tablet computer or any other device connected to the internet (like your TV, DVD or Gaming Console, the list goes on). If you don’t

protect yourself and your property, the cyber criminals will take advantage of that, and cleaning up after a data breach can be cost and time consuming and being an Identity Theft victim would be a nightmare. To protect your family, yourself and your company consider the following: use a state of the art Antivirus- and Antispam Solution (on your Computer and Smartphone). Use a modern Firewall/Router to connect to the Internet (not just the Provider Modem). Be sure that you always use the latest version of your software products and operating system. Surf the Internet on a public Wi-Fi only with an encrypted VPN-Connection and password protect your Wi-Fi at your location. Never use a weak password or the same password for multiply accounts (Password Manager help you with that). Never send confidential data (SSN, Credit Card Information, Passwords) using a standard E-Mail (it’s basically the same as a postcard; everyone could read it).

Getting To Know Some of Cape Coral's Small Business Entrepreneurs

ARTICLE DIANA KAY SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY GREG WAGNER

T

Lenny Greco

{ Greco Jewelers }

When asked what he's most passionate about, Lenny Greco, owner of Greco Jewelers, doesn't talk about the exquisite items his store has to offer. He talks about recovery, tenacity, his love and admiration for his wife, and his relationship with God‌"He stuck with me when I had fallen flat on my face. I succeeded in spite of myself." As a young man, Greco had been tending bar in Manhattan when he moved to Florida. His first job here was at a local jewelers where he was blessed with a boss who told him he was never going to succeed in SW Florida if he didn't slow down. She taught him to walk and talk slower. She taught him to listen. Greco experienced many successes along with traumatic disappointments working for other jewelry companies. Fulfillment came when he went into business for himself. Says Greco,  "Whether it's a young couple with two nickels to rub together looking for an engagement ring, or an older couple excited about purchasing something spectacular, we make someone happy. You can't ask for a better day." GrecoJewelers.net

ypically, we associate entrepreneurs with persistence, determination, creativity and perseverance. Certainly, the local entrepreneurs we're featuring in this issue have those characteristics in common. However, when you read their stories, you may be convinced that there is no such thing as a typical entrepreneur. Some had hit rock bottom, then rose up to great success. Other's fulfilled childhood dreams, or found a new passion. A married couple started over with their own company. Another couple's fun project led to a comprehensive community dot-com. Three young people dedicated themselves to developing super nutritious greens. Add the following characteristics to our featured entrepreneurs: faith, humility, love of family and community. Now you have the full picture.

Jeff and Laura Koehn

Mark Taylor, owner of Edible Arrangements in Cape Coral reminisced, "Eleven years ago my wife and I sent an arrangement, through another distributer, to my mother-in-law who lived in a nursing home. It was a big hit with the residents of the home. We decided, 'What a great business! It's fun to send it. It's fun to receive it. This is what we're going to do!' " Taylor, doesn't sell typical fruit bouquets at his dynamic, new location in Coralwood Center. He adds chocolate and other goodies! There are many tasty treats at Edible Arrangements, all made with natural ingredients; snack sized cones filled with chocolate covered fruit, confetti stars and cupcakes, frozen yogurt parfaits and fruit smoothies. Their newest offering is an elegant box of chocolates‌ eighteen bites of luscious gourmet chocolates enhanced with a variety of natural flavorings. Taylor, tells the story of a man who wanted a "Hello Kitty" bouquet with chocolate covered strawberries for his daughter. Taylor asked, "Is it her birthday?" The man replied, "No, it's for her Cabbage Patch Doll's birthday party!" EdibleArrangements.com

{ CapeCoral.com }

At sixteen, native Floridian, Jeff Koehn, knew he was good at sales when he earned money selling vacation packages. The teenager also knew he had an aptitude for writing "book reports." Decades later, when he became a partner in CapeCoral.com, he attended various local events to take photos, but he always carried a small notebook. Koehn recalls visiting a Pop Warner football camp. "I found myself in the middle of the field surrounded by ex-NFL players who were shouting quotes at me!" Out came the notebook. He went home and wrote a "book report." CapeCoral.com shifted from being an always positive little local events project, to a comprehensive, unbiased, story oriented local news source. "No slant," says Koehn, "we want our readers to make up their own minds." Koehn spoke of the Cape's doldrums years when he and his wife, Marketing Director, Laura Koehn, along with his staff, "walked hand in hand with the community. I could see the light at the end of the tunnel." Readership has increased by double digits every year since the website's inception in 2009. CapeCoral.com

{ Florida Microgreens }

Rob Epple had been cultivating food at his home for years where he experimented with water culture and growing hydroponically. He served the healthy, flavorful food to his family. And thought, "Why shouldn't every family be able to experience this?" Epple consulted Chef Jack Elias, a teacher at Hi Tech North, and expressed interest in starting a business specializing in microgreens. He asked the chef, "Why don't we see more microgreens in our area restaurants and on the tables at home?" Chef Jack replied, "Two problems…cost and shelf life." It took about six months for Epple and his partners, Rachel Shemenski and Nick Shemenski to develop a solution…live microgreens growing in food safe trays. Today Florida Microgreens delivers the living delicacies to restaurants all around Lee County and will soon make them available to private households. These microgreens are grown indoors with purified water only. Said Rachel Shemenski, “They are a clean, safe, natural food that is packed with nutrients.” Recent studies indicate that the tiny foods are four to forty times more nutritious than the adult plant. Woodcrafter, Phil Rivera, owner of Felipe's Creations, trolls the waters of Lee County in his twelve foot Jon boat looking for treasure. He's not hunting for gold or silver, he's searching for driftwood. The artist uses not only driftwood in his stunning creations, but collects wood from dilapidated old barns, cast out furniture, wooden plats and downed trees. "Sometimes people bring me stuff!" he laughed. Much of his work can be seen throughout Cape Christian Church in Cape Coral, where he and his family are members. In 2007, Rivera, who had been working as a trim and frame carpenter, lost everything in the housing crash. Then began the fulfillment of his childhood dream…wood crafting. "Just goes to show, something good can come from something bad," He said. From large pieces such as a colorful wood planked wall, gorgeous rustic furniture pieces and sculpted wall art, to the smallest wooden cross or tiny angel, Rivera creates unique and lasting works of art. "Mother Nature makes the parts, I put them together." To see some of his art, visit his Facebook page, "Felipes Creations."

Dave Lapio

{ Pan Dave }

Ron and Stacy Lomonaco

Dave Lapio's career as a chemist in New Hampshire had become very stressful. Then, in 1988, while on a Caribbean cruise and listening to the ship's calypso band, Lapio, an accomplished musician himself, was entranced by the sound of the steel drum. He made a decision. "This is what I want to do." He quit his job, moved to Florida and taught himself to play steel drum. Subsequently, he, "learned to play properly," at steel band competitions in Trinidad. He's been a professional "Pan Player" ever since. During his performance, his subtly undulating body becomes one with the melody of the shining, handmade instrument. In 1998 he was invited by a music professor at the University of Florida to participate in a concert with the thirty two member student "Steel Drum Band." At rehearsal, the band suddenly quit playing. Lapio found himself playing solo. A student turned to the professor and exclaimed, "Look, Professor! He's moving!" Says Lapio's wife, Ruth, "The only time I see the chemist in him is when he's measuring water for coffee. He's very precise." Pandave.com

{ Ron’s Airport Transportation } In 2008 when Ron and Stacy Lomonaco founded Ron's Airport Transportation, they started with one car, one customer, and when gas was four dollars a gallon. "Stacy was the driving force behind our going into business for ourselves," said Ron, who had been dissatisfied working for another company. One night Stacy said to him, 'You're done! Let's go for it!" The next day they were at City Hall setting up their company. The Lomonacos place emphasis on comfort and communication. All vehicles are non-smoking. The driver calls the client the night before pick up, and calls again when on the way. Years ago, Ron was scheduled to collect an elderly woman in Ft. Myers at 4:00 a.m. He called her the night before. She confirmed. He called her the next morning to tell her he was in route…No answer. He reached her house, knocked on the door…No answer. He dialed 911. The police and fire department arrived and knocked down the door. The woman was in a diabetic coma. She survived because Ron Lomonaco went beyond the call of duty. RonsAirport.com

Siesta Key A SUNDAY IN

EXPLORE THE SUGARY WHITE SAND AND FUNKY VIBE OF SIESTA KEY

Siesta Key Bead Shack 30

Cape Coral Lifestyle | February 2017

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHANIE KARASEK

I

love the freedom of exploring a new destination with no agenda. Spontaneous wandering… Island time. Day trips provide the opportunity to travel and discover someplace new, without a big commitment of money or time. Siesta Key Florida is just the place for a Sunday day trip. Siesta Key, a barrier island 8 miles long, is located off the west coast of Florida. It is accessible by one of two bridges, connecting it to the mainland of Sarasota. The island has four main areas, Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach, Turtle Beach, and Siesta Key Village. After crossing the bridge to the island, the sugar white sand of Siesta Beach welcomes me. Despite a chance of rain, the beach is packed with families schlepping chairs and coolers. An action packed volleyball game with girls in tiny bikinis and muscular guys in trendy board shorts provides entertainment. Daring kite boarders take advantage of the windy day to enjoy their sport.

Siesta Key Bead Shack

After a stroll on the sugary white sand beach, I head north to Siesta Key Village. The Village is a funky shopping district with brightly colored and eclectic boutiques, galleries, souvenir shops and restaurants. If you enjoy coastal inspired art and home decor, the shops in the Village are a great place to find unique and affordable treasures. The Gallery on Siesta Key, owned by Martha Smith, showcases local artists. From the Tube Dude out front, to the unique wine racks and painted gourds, the gallery radiates a playful vibe. The Siesta Sea Shanty, a beachy, open-air shop, offers all things coastal. From sunglasses, jewelry, and home decor with a nautical theme, there is something for everyone with a love of the sea. Intrigued by the smooth sounds of steel drums and festive atmosphere of The Hub Baja Grill, I decide it is time for lunch. Located on the main strip of the Village, the Hub is a perfect place to relax and people watch. I choose to sample the local favorite, Baja Fish Tacos, which are grilled long fin tilapia topped with a mix of cilantro CONTINUED >

cucumber lime citrus slaw, stuffed in two flour tortillas and served with rice and refried beans. The tacos are delicious but a little “hot” for my sensitive taste buds. Luckily the conversation is lively and the margaritas are cold. Across the street from the Hub is the Siesta Key Bead Shack, a rare and unique find. The boutique carries a large collection of handcrafted jewelry as well as a diverse selection of beads from around the world. The store is stocked with gemstones, glass, wood and bone beads. It also sells sterling silver, pewter, Bali and Thai silver and copper pendants. The boutique carries tools and stringing materials for making your own jewelry. The staff is available to assist customers with their creations. Robin Hood Rentals provides segways, bikes, paddleboards, jet skis, kayaks and scooters. They even deliver to the water or your hotel. I recommend renting a kayak if your schedule allows. Exploring the island by water is an unforgettable experience. Kayak rentals are $45/ day for a single and $55/day for a double. At the southern end of Siesta Key is Turtle Beach. This beach is known for its shelling

The sea turtle nesting season runs from May through October on the Gulf Coast. Sea turtles are protected by both the Federal Endangered Species Act and The Florida Marine Protection Act. It is against the law to disturb these protected animals. The sand dunes surrounding Turtle Beach provide an ideal nesting area for the turtles. I end my day with a bowl of clam chowder and iced tea at the Turtle Beach Pub. The Pub is a casual indoor/outdoor family friendly restaurant. It is the kind of place that you can relax after a hot day in the sun. A little "sand between the toes" kind of place. You’ll find it at the Turtle Beach Marina, directly across the street from the beach. It was recommended by a local who raved about their seafood and cold beer. As I sit on the patio with a view of the marina, I reflect on my Sunday in Siesta Key. A perfect day of wandering, interesting people, local art and delicious clam chowder… a Sunday in Paradise!

rom the moment you walk through the doors of Lifeline Family Center, you can feel the warmth and compassion of the home. The girls are engaged with volunteers learning life skills while the babies are cared for in the nursery. The center was founded in 1996 and offers young, pregnant women a 2-year program including a home, scholarship opportunities and childcare while they pursue their education. In addition to saving unborn children, Lifeline works to enable these young mothers to become self-supporting members of society, preventing them from living in poverty. The mission is clear. “Lifeline Family Center offers a positive alternative to abortion, giving both mother and baby hope for the future.” Lifeline is reaching out beyond the home to serve the community as well. A wide variety of free services are offered including pregnancy tests, non-medical ultrasounds, abstinence education, a college outreach program and a 24/7 hotline and counseling for women considering an abortion or having experienced an abortion. Lifeline also provides adoption assistance for birth mothers who choose adoption, in addition to Healing Hearts, a bible study focusing on healing the mental, emotional and spiritual devastation associated with abortion or miscarriage. 38
