The Men’s Issue

Have you ever paused to think about the impact fathers have on their homes and families? The truth is, the role of a father is immeasurable. Fathers shape homes, nurture growth, and provide the foundation upon which children can thrive. And as a dad, the level of impact you choose to have is entirely in your hands.

A father’s gifts are unique and lasting—his strength, his words, his guidance—all create an impact that ripples through generations. Here are just a few of the ways fathers build up their homes:

• A father’s strength can be a steady anchor.

• His words can encourage and inspire.

• A dad’s hugs can provide comfort in difficult times.

• A smile from a dad can instill joy and confidence.

• Time spent with a dad is filled with both fun and productivity.

• A dad’s physicality can challenge and excite.

• His guidance can be life-changing.

• A father’s correction is sometimes life-saving.

• Adventures with a dad create unforgettable memories.

This month, let’s celebrate fathers everywhere. If you have a father or father figure in your life, let them know how much they matter to you. And if you are a dad, thank you. You are an invaluable part of your family, your community, and the world.

Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible dads out there!

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short

Creative Director: Jen Birn

Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill

Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX

MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.

Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

THE QUIET STANDARD:

MIKE JOHNSON

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”

This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. SUMMER GRILL RECIPES

THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER

The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!

INGREDIENTS:

• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*

• 2 Tablespoons lime*

• 2 Tablespoons finely, chopped cilantro

• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil

• ¼ White onion, finely chopped

• 1 Tablespoon cumin

• Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag

2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.

3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.

4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.

SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK

5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.

6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).

7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.

*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

SUM MER

CHIMICHURRI

INGREDIENTS:

• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped

• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 3 Cloves garlic, minced

• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano

• 1 Teaspoon salt

• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.

ROASTED CORN SALSA

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 Ears sweet corn

• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes

• ¼ Cup lime juice

• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• ½ Cup white onion, chopped

• 2 Cloves garlic, minced

• Salt to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.

2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.

3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.

4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.

GUYS’ GUYS’

Has it been too long since your tribe gathered to rib and one-up each other as only guys can do? To help plan a getaway for just the guys, City Lifestyle gathered an eclectic list of locations offering tons of things to see, do and experience. Here’s hoping the only ribs one will get on this guys’ getaway are the kind to hold in hands while barbecue sauce drips onto shirts.

Scottsdale/Phoenix

There’s no other tournament on the PGA Tour like the Waste Management Phoenix Open and no hole like the legendary 16th, where 20,000 boisterous fans boo the tee shots that miss the green. The other 51 weeks of the year, golfers can play TPC Scottsdale or try one of more than 200 courses in the Scottsdale area, a top golf destination. Another winter event is the BarrettJackson Collector Car Auction. Even if one’s only collector car was a Hot Wheels, it’s a blast to peruse the acres of autos for sale before heading inside to watch the unique or renowned cars crossing the auction block. When it’s time to get moving, the strenuous hike up Camelback Mountain in nearby Phoenix

is a bucket-list item. Need a more moderate trail? Experience the same magic of the majestic saguaro cactus in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

New Orleans

It’s always a party in New Orleans (NOLA), especially when it comes to festivals, many of them centered around music. Folk to funk, gospel to jazz, zydeco, blues, African and other musical styles are celebrated on the Jazz and Heritage Festival’s 12 stages. If free admission is more desired, don’t miss the French Quarter Festival featuring local musicians and food vendors representing dozens of New Orleans restaurants. Part of the fun of Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo is admiring revelers’ watercraft, some of them homemade just for this festival on the banks of Bayou Saint John. If one of the festivals can’t be attended, there’s still plenty of NOLA live music, particularly the jazz clubs on Frenchmen Street. And when a break from crowds is needed, take a guided swamp tour. Kitschy, yes, but it’s a hoot to cruise around on a swamp buggy while looking for alligators.

Austin

Live music rules here, with iconic venues such as Antone’s, The Continental Club, the White Horse and hundreds of other locations, from dive bars to big stages. From rock and blues to country and urban, music is heard every night of the week (and many afternoons as well). When guys are hungry, there are tons of barbeque and Tex-Mex joints. Unique food trucks are truly a thing here, with nearly 2,000 food trailers in town. Burn some calories biking or running the Southern Walnut Creek Trail or one of many paved paths. Get out on the water in a kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard on Lake Travis or Lady Bird Lake. Take a dip in the historic Barton Springs Pool, where the underground springs keep the water around 68 degrees all year.

BUILT ON TRADITION

On any summer night in Northeast Ohio, the line at Pav’s Creamery tells its own story. Families gather, kids press their hands to the window at the Portage Lakes shop as they debate flavors, and the regulars order without hesitation. What appears as a simple stop for ice cream is, for generations of customers, part of something much bigger.

Long before it became a regional staple, Pav’s Creamery began as a classic 1950s ice cream stand in Portage Lakes. Originally a Tastee Freez, the shop was later purchased by Robert “Pav” Pavlik, who gave the stand its now familiar name before eventually selling it to retire.

That is when Bill and Claire Micochero took a chance on the small neighborhood shop in 1978, unknowingly laying the foundation for what would become a multigenerational family business.

“What started as my parents’ little ice cream stand has grown into something bigger than I could have ever imagined,” says owner Michelle Micochero. “But the best part is building it alongside my family and creating something that lasts. It is not just a business, it is part of our family story.”

In those early years, Pav’s was known as much for its fried chicken as for its homemade custard. Over time, however, its identity evolved.

For Michelle’s son, Nik Pappas, the story begun by his grandparents continues a generation later.

“My grandfather was a tire maker for Firestone, and he hated it,” he recalls. “He used to drive to Pav’s, sit there, and count cars, trying to figure out how much money the place was making.”

Curiosity soon turned into opportunity. His grandfather eventually struck a deal with the original owner and took over the business.

"WHAT STARTED AS MY PARENTS’ LITTLE ICE CREAM STAND HAS GROWN INTO SOMETHING BIGGER THAN I COULD HAVE EVER IMAGINED."

Years later, Pappas would find himself at a similar crossroads.

In 2012, after two years working in the Seychelles, he returned home with his wife and son, ready for a reset from the hospitality world. He decided to take a chance on Pav’s.

“I told myself, give it three months and see if I can make a living doing this.”

What began as a short term experiment quickly gained traction. Pappas started wholesaling Pav’s products to local restaurants, beginning with Beau’s, then expanding to grocery stores, country clubs, and more. Over the next decade, that side of the business grew to serve more than 20 stores, while new retail locations opened in Green, North Canton, Cuyahoga Falls, and Bath.

That growth created space for others to step into leadership roles.

“I joined the team and became an official ‘Pavette’ nine years ago because Nik approached me about opening a shop in our hometown,” says Cassie Oakes, co-owner of the North Canton and Green locations. “I had an ice cream background and always told my previous owners I would buy a shop someday. I love getting to be creative with flavors and connecting with the local community.”

But expansion also brought a reality check.

Early on, Pappas realized Pav’s was not as widely known as he had assumed.

“That was a tough thing to get over,” he says. “We had to stop focusing on what we thought we were and start focusing on what we actually did well.”

That shift became a turning point, leaning into creativity, consistency, and customer driven ideas. From viral menu items to high demand favorites, the brand began to find its rhythm.

“Listening to what our customers want is huge,” he explains. “We try to cater each location to its community.”

Beyond the growth and evolving menu, Pav’s has always been rooted in something deeper: memory.

“So many people come here for the experience they had as kids,” Pappas says. “At Portage Lakes, St. Francis is right next door. Kids would come over after school, grab a treat, and fifteen or twenty years later, they are back with their own families.”

That sense of tradition, passed from one generation to the next, continues to define the Pav’s experience. Even today, the shop still uses the same custard machines once used at Euclid Beach Park in the early 1920s, a small but meaningful link to its past.

“The seed was planted by Michelle to come home, and we are so glad we did,” says Melody Pappas, co-owner of the Green, Bath, and North Canton locations. “It is a privilege to do this work. It is an honor to Claire and Bill to carry on the family business. The family is growing, and it is a blessing to be part of it.”

The support of the community would soon be put to the test during the opening of the North Canton location. Facing unexpected permitting and zoning challenges, the project was nearly shut down, putting tens of thousands of dollars at risk.

In a final effort, Pappas turned to the community.

“I posted on Facebook explaining the situation,” he says. “At the city council meeting, over one hundred people showed up in support.”

The response not only helped secure approval, it reshaped his perspective.

“That is why I stay so involved in the community,” he adds. “That moment meant everything.”

Today, Pav’s is powered just as much by

its people as its product. Many employees start as seasonal hires but return year after year. Some have stayed for more than a decade.

“There is a reason for that,” Pappas says. “We treat them well. They are part of the Pav’s family.”

For some, that connection begins early and lasts for years.

“I have grown up with Pav’s,” says Ashley Mitchell, the company’s marketing director. “I started working here when I was eight, running the register and learning how to

count change while working alongside my mom. It means so much to still be part of the business as it has grown.”

While the storefront experience remains central to the brand, Pav’s has also expanded in new directions, including its food trucks.

“The food trucks are so fun,” says Mark Bulger, director of food truck operations. “We travel and stay busy all summer, from April through October. We started with one truck in 2020, and now we have two. One of my favorite moments was working at LeBron’s Fourth of July party, along with private events featuring Guy Fieri, Peyton Manning, and Diana Ross.”

Today, Pav’s remains committed to quality. The creamery is known for its freshly made custard, homemade hard ice cream, yogurts, and sorbets, all made on site daily with more than thirty flavors and combinations.

With locations across the region, Pav’s has become a destination for ice cream in Northeast Ohio, even earning Tripadvisor’s recognition as Akron’s top dining destination.

Despite the expansion, Pappas remains hands-on.

“I am a delivery driver, a menu maker, marketing, I will sweep floors, create new flavors, whatever needs to be done,” he says. “People are surprised to see me hauling in ice cream, but I will work as hard as I need to.”

Looking ahead, the vision for Pav’s continues to take shape, just as it always has.

“There was never really a business plan,” he admits. “Everything happened organically, one opportunity leading to the next.”

Now, that growth includes expanding beyond ice cream, with new ventures like coffee entering the mix through their latest concept, Pav’s Beanery.

“It is a natural fit,” he says. “Locally roasted coffee from M&H Roasters alongside what we already do just makes sense.”

For Pappas, legacy is defined by what is built to last.

“Where could this be when my kids take it over one day?” he reflects. If the past is any indication, the future of Pav’s Creamery lies not just in what it becomes, but in what it continues to mean to the Northeast Ohio community.

BEYOND THE FAIRWAYS

at Bunker Hill

Discover How Bunker Hill Golf Course Combines Scenic Surroundings, Expert Planning and Elevated Hospitality for Memorable Events

ARTICLE BY EMILY SHEA-OWEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BUNKER HILL GOLF COURSE

You may know Bunker Hill Golf Course as an award-winning destination for exceptional play, but beyond the fairways lies a premier event venue designed to impress. In 2025, Bunker Hill unveiled a newly renovated event space, thoughtfully reimagined to replace its former event center and restaurant. The transformation elevates both the venue’s offerings and service, creating a refined setting for gatherings that feel seamless, elevated and unforgettable.

This new space allows Bunker Hill to host a wide range of catered events, from intimate celebrations to large-scale affairs. Birthday parties, rehearsal dinners, vow renewals, showers, retirement parties, celebrations of life, graduations, holiday gatherings, class reunions, awards events, corporate outings, fundraisers and weddings are all brought to life with ease and attention to detail.

According to General Manager Chad Gibson, golf outings and fundraisers remain the cornerstone of the event center’s offerings, but they’re far from the only focus. “We’re particularly passionate about hosting fundraising events and corporate golf outings,” Gibson says. “But we’re also the perfect place for all kinds of gatherings and celebrations. We’re a turnkey host, with an on-site catering team and established relationships with the area’s top DJs, photographers and hotels.”

Below, we take a closer look at Bunker Hill’s event spaces, specialized offerings and the hands-on experience provided by Chad and his expert event team.

EVENT SPACES

Bunker Hill offers four distinct event spaces, each designed to create a memorable setting for gatherings of every style and scale: the Event Room, Event Simulator Room, Pavilion and Course Gazebo.

The Event Room serves as Bunker Hill’s newly renovated flagship venue. Featuring a spacious bar, dedicated DJ station and dance floor, the space flows seamlessly onto a stunning outdoor patio overlooking the golf course. With capacity for up to 160 guests, it’s ideally suited for weddings, holiday celebrations and other large-scale events.

For more intimate moments, the Course Gazebo provides a picturesque backdrop for weddings and vow renewals. It accommodates up to 40 guests, with seating for 16 and additional standing room, making it perfect for small, scenic ceremonies.

Similar in capacity to the Event Room, the Pavilion welcomes up to 150 guests in an open-air setting with its own dedicated parking. Designed for relaxed yet elevated gatherings, it’s a popular choice for graduation parties, birthday celebrations and casual corporate events. Amenities include upscale picnic tables, cornhole, a practice putting green, a large bar, grill and DJ area.

Rounding out the offerings is the Event Simulator Room, a dynamic indoor space that accommodates up to 60 guests. With golf simulators, giant Jenga, a full bar and a DJ area, it’s an ideal choice for corporate appreciation events, team gatherings and festive holiday parties that favor a more interactive atmosphere.

CATERING

One of the standout advantages of hosting an event at Bunker Hill is its on-site catering, designed to deliver both quality and convenience. The culinary team offers a thoughtfully curated menu that spans from light appetizers to decadent desserts, with entrées ranging from savory honey rosemary chicken to the ever-popular beef tenderloin tips. Each selection can be paired with classic, crowd-pleasing sides like buttered mashed potatoes and sweet glazed carrots.

To complete the experience, Bunker Hill offers a variety of bar package options, including cash bar, tab bar and happy hour selections, allowing hosts to tailor the beverage service to their event style and guest list.

GRADUATION PARTIES

Graduation season is upon us, and the Pavilion offers an effortless way to bring friends and family together to mark the moment. With ample room to host a large guest list and an inviting openair layout, it strikes the perfect balance between celebratory and relaxed. The setting is an ideal backdrop for honoring graduates and the milestones they’ve worked so hard to achieve.

FUNDRAISERS

Bunker Hill has hosted thousands of fundraisers over the years, helping raise millions of dollars for local charities, schools, churches, fire departments, food banks, animal rescues and countless other community causes. Backed by proven strategies and hands-on guidance, Chad and his team work closely with organizers to drive measurable results and maximize impact.

While the Event Room remains the quintessential setting for fundraiser events, both the Pavilion and Event Simulator Room offer flexible alternatives, allowing each fundraiser to be tailored to its goals, size and audience.

GOLF OUTINGS

Experience the best of Bunker Hill’s course and event planning expertise with a golf outing. Chad and his team ensure each outing is unforgettable for guests and completely stressfree for organizers. Whether you envision an event with two dozen golfers or more than 100, Bunker Hill can seamlessly bring your vision to life — from the first tee to the final toast.

Invest in the event of your dreams while supporting local. For more information about Bunker Hill or to begin planning an event, visit BunkerHillGolf.com or email Chad directly at chad@bunkerhillgc.com.
