To the Women of Canton

This month’s Ladies' Issue is close to my heart. It’s about the women who make Canton feel like home—who lead with grit, nurture with grace, and bring their creativity, compassion, and strength into every corner of our community. From mothers and grandmothers to business owners, artists, and young changemakers, this issue celebrates the many ways in which women have shaped the soul of this town.

We’re thrilled to feature two remarkable young women this month. One is Addison, Miss Teen Rodeo Georgia, who represents not only the power of tradition but also the bold spirit of a new generation. The other is Dr. Blanco, an International Grandmaster in chess, right here in Canton, who’s showing the world what focus, discipline, and brilliance look like. They are two very different paths, both inspiring stories.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, we’re reminded that some of the most impactful leaders are the ones who raised us. Whether it’s a mom juggling work and home or a grandmother passing down stories over Sunday supper, these women are the quiet heroes who shape our character and our communities.

We also want to shine a light on the incredible women-led businesses that make downtown Canton vibrant and full of heart. From the fashion-forward finds at our boutiques to the thoughtful gifts and community feel at The Cotton Mill Exchange, women entrepreneurs are shaping Canton’s style and spirit. This leadership is changing the way we gather—offering connection and community led by women with vision and heart.

Add to that the work of local female leaders who lift our city and county. And the many small businesses owned and operated by women across our town— and it’s clear: the women of Canton aren’t just participating in the community. They’re shaping it.

So here’s to the women—young and seasoned—who inspire us. Here’s to moms, mentors, business owners, and dreamers. And to my five extraordinary ladies, thank you for walking with me through this adventure. May this issue be a thank you, a celebration, and a reminder of just how much stronger we are when we lift each other.

With gratitude,

May 2025

CHECKMATE Confidence

A QUEEN AND GLOBAL CHAMPION INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

ARTICLE BY STEVEN ARROWOOD

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DR. BLANCO

She has faced off against grandmasters, spoken at global chess summits, and now teaches strategy to young students just miles from downtown Canton. Dr. Carolina Blanco, an International Chess Master, built her career with poise, discipline, and a passion for teaching. While most girls leave competitive chess by middle school, Carolina has turned that narrative on its head—especially at the parent-partnered hybrid Cherokee County private Christian school The King’s Academy. Through her company, OrthoChess, Dr. Blanco has led students to regional, state, and national titles. Chess, she believes, isn’t just a game—it’s a mindset.

Carolina didn’t just enter the world of chess— she rose to its rarest ranks. What’s often perceived as a game of cold calculation becomes, in her hands, a canvas for intuition, patience, and power. Carolina, with her inner Venezuelan flair, trained on international stages, brings warmth, confidence, and a vibrant energy to a game traditionally dominated by men. At the age of 12, she earned the title of Woman International Master. By the age of 19, she had become an International Master, a ranking held by fewer than 1% of competitive players worldwide. Alongside her chess pursuits, she earned her doctorate in dentistry and orthodontics in São Paulo, then moved to the U.S., where she built a business combining her passions— OrthoChess

When she moved to the United States in 2006, her love for the country changed. She launched “Chessmile Braces,” orthodontic brackets designed in the shape of chess pieces. A trained orthodontist, she noticed the symbolic alignment -32 teeth, 32 chess pieces—and ran with the idea, bringing her entrepreneurial vision to life at national dental conferences. Although she no longer practices clinically, Carolina remains active in the field, referring patients to trusted local partners, such as Dr. Glenn Lewis and the Dr. Kragors of Canton.

Now, as a proud US Citizen and local Georgian, her teams have earned top placements at state and regional championships through GAPPS and GISA. In 2024, one of her K-8 teams took the USCF National Team Championship title, with multiple students landing in the nation’s top 10. In 2024, she visited the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis while attending an all-girls competition hosted by Garry Kasparov’s foundation. There, among legends of the game, Carolina is honored for her enduring contribution to chess as both a competitor and a global ambassador.

CONTINUED >

DR. CAROLINA Blanco

Despite her achievements, Carolina remains focused on her mission: encouraging young minds—especially girls—to stay engaged. “Chess taught me that strategy and grace go hand-in-hand. I want girls to believe they can lead, win, and shine—on the board, in business, and life,” she says. “Chess sharpens your mind, builds confidence, and teaches resilience. It’s something every student should have access to."

In a world where elegance often overshadows intellect, Carolina proves that the two can coexist in harmony— one calculated move at a time. Elegance is redefined through precision, purpose, and strategic moves. To watch Carolina teach is to witness a masterclass in quiet strength. Her students lean in—not because she commands attention but because she teaches chess not as a game of winners and losers but as a life skill—one that nurtures discipline, accountability, problem-solving, and emotional control.

Her story echoes the quiet brilliance of The Queen’s Gambit—yet this queen doesn’t live on a screen. She began playing competitively at the age of six and became a national champion in Venezuela by the time she was eight years old. That win unlocked international travel, elite coaching, and a desire for mastery. Her education took her to Brazil for her dental doctorate, but

chess never left her side. “It was my compass,” she says. “Chess shaped how I think, how I solve, and how I lead.”

Her students don’t just play—they win and do so gracefully. “We’ve built something special,” she says. “We have students who once thought chess was too hard, or too quiet, or too ‘male.’ Now, they’re ranking nationally.”

But it’s not only her students who are evolving. Carolina continues to grow, attending orthodontic conferences, mentoring across three languages, and exploring how her love of fashion might someday merge with chess—a red stiletto on a black-and-white board, perhaps, symbolizing power in femininity and even imagining a future where she combines her love of chess with runway trends. “There’s beauty in sharp thinking and strong style,” she says with a laugh. “One day, maybe I’ll bring that to life too.”

For Carolina, life is not material—it’s mastery. It’s the ability to create space for others to rise. And in a world where chessboards are still more often male than mixed, her presence is unexpected and unforgettable. With multiple languages under her belt, a lifelong learner’s mindset, and a track record of excellence, Dr. Carolina Blanco is the embodiment of modern luxury—where wisdom is wearable and leadership comes in red heels.

“Chess sharpens the mind, builds resilience, and teaches you to think forward. Students need more spaces where they lead—not in reaction to others, but by design.”

From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings.

As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions

associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.

In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.

Hanging Florals

Florals and Fruit

Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.

No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.

Flower Frogs

Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

GRIT AND GRACE: CANTON’S CROWNED TEEN RODEO STAR

BLENDING HEART, HORSEPOWER, HERITAGE, AND HIGH HOPES
ARTICLE BY KEVIN JONAS-DAVIS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DWAYNE CULPEPPER, DC PHOTOS

From English saddles to Western speed, Addison Williams has lived a lifetime in the saddle—and she’s only 17. A Canton native and daughter of rodeo parents, Addison represents a new generation of cowgirl: educated, empowered, and fully immersed in a sport that’s equal parts grit and grace.

She attends i-Grad Academy and dual-enrolls at Georgia Highlands College, juggling psychology classes with early-morning training sessions and weekend rodeos. “I realized early on that I chose a very time-consuming sport,” she explains. “We leave for rodeos on Thursdays or Fridays, and I needed a flexible school schedule to match the lifestyle.”

Addison's first steps into the horse world began at just four years old. She started in English disciplines—jumping and dressage—and rode competitively until she was 13. But by then, the roar of rodeo crowds and the thunder of hooves around barrels had captured her heart.

DC Photos

“I was doing both at once for a while—English riding and barrel racing,” she laughs. “Eventually, I left for the ‘dark side,’ as my English coach called it, to go full rodeo.”

Today, she competes in Barrel Racing and Pole Bending, two of the most explosive events in the arena. Her trusty horse, Dolly, is always at her side— her partner in every loop, turn, and sprint. “You don’t just vibe with every horse,” Addison says. “But when you do, it changes everything. Dolly and I—we’re a team.”

Rodeo, she’s quick to point out, isn’t just about raw speed or showmanship. It’s about connection, consistency, and mental strength. “Your horse can feel everything you feel. If you're not right mentally, you won’t ride right physically. And they know, they sense it in you.”

Barrel Racing, Addison’s specialty, looks simple at first glance: a horse and rider racing a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. But it requires meticulous control, reading each arena’s unique setup, and pushing speed without sacrificing accuracy. “Every arena is different—smaller ones can shave your time by a second, and if barrels are too close to the fence, you’ve got to adjust your turns. It’s all a mental game.”

Her parents play an enormous role in her journey—not just emotionally, but in the daily routines. “I have to ride at least three times a week,” she says. “That’s not from a coach. That’s from Mom and Dad. They keep me—and Dolly—conditioned. Like training for a marathon.”

“We don’t watch Netflix—we watch rodeo. Every night. This is all I do, all I love.”

In 2024, Addison was crowned Rodeo Queen of the RockN’5L Rodeo Association. And as the first teen to represent the Miss Rodeo Georgia Association, she now wears her sash and title with purpose—to educate and inspire younger riders. “There are a lot of girls who don’t even know rodeo is an option,” she says. “I want to change that.”

To help demystify the sport, Addison offers a breakdown of rodeo’s key events. “You’ve got roughstock events like saddle bronc and bareback riding, and of course, bull riding—my dad rode bulls for eight years,” she shares. “Then there are the timed events—team roping, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, steer wrestling. It’s all about precision.”

Addison’s long-term dream? Competing at the collegiate level and ultimately earning a spot in the Miss Rodeo America pageant. “Some girls do the pageant but don’t compete in rodeo,” she says. “I do both. And I think it’s important to show the full picture of what rodeo is.”

With few colleges in Georgia offering rodeo, Addison is exploring programs in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama—schools that have full barns, arenas, and travel schedules, just like any other sport. And she’s not afraid of the independence it’ll require. “I’ll be hauling my horse by myself. Truck, trailer, the whole deal. But that’s the life I want.”

For Addison, rodeo isn’t just a competition. It’s her compass, her classroom, and her calling.

“Find what lights your heart on fire,” she says with a smile. “And don’t let go.”

GOLF FOR EVERY GENERATION

Whether you're 7 or 77, golf offers a unique way to connect across ages. At Fairways of Canton, we believe in making the game accessible, enjoyable, and lasting. Join us for lessons, leagues, or a casual round—your lifetime love for golf can start right here. Derek Sauser, Fairways of Canton Golf Pro.

Three Elevated Tips Every Woman Golfer Should Know

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEREK SAUSER, FAIRWAYS OF CANTON - GOLF PRO.

There’s something timeless about the rhythm of a great round of golf—especially when played against the lush backdrop of North Georgia’s rolling hills. At Fairways of Canton, we see more women embracing the game each season, not just for competition, but for connection. Here are three elevated tips I share with every lady who steps onto our tees.

1. DRESS WITH INTENTION, PLAY WITH CONFIDENCE

Style and performance go hand-in-hand on the course. Look for breathable, tailored pieces that allow freedom of movement while keeping you polished. Whether it’s a sleek skort or a pop of color in your visor, confidence begins with how you show up. Walk onto the first tee like you own it—and watch your game transform.

2. MASTER THE ART OF THE SHORT GAME

Forget the long drive—your scoring secret lies inside 100 yards. At Fairways of Canton, we emphasize finesse over force. My go-to? The elegant bump-and-run with an 8-iron. Clean, controlled, and surprisingly effective. Spend a little time around the practice green, and you'll see big results.

3. MAKE THE GAME SOCIAL

Golf is a game meant to be shared. Host a “Ladies Nine & Wine” evening, organize a weekend scramble, or simply bring your best friend and catch up between fairways. Some of the best conversations I’ve heard at Fairways have happened mid-round, surrounded by pine trees and Southern breezes. Come see me at Fairways of Canton— where your swing, your style, and your story matter.
