The Diamond Dawgs

“Guys have underestimated me my entire life, and for years, I never understood why – it used to really bother me. Then, one day, I was driving my little boy to school, and I saw a quote by Walt Whitman; it was painted on the wall there, and it said, ‘Be curious, not judgmental.’ I like that.” - Ted Lasso

This June Issue is not just a celebration of the Ryan Gosling's of Canton but a testament to the unique qualities, profound influence, laughter, and servant hearts we see in the diverse men across 30114 and 30115 daily.

The front cover was an epic project to work on with Naomi. What do you get when you put an attorney, entrepreneur, contractor, and male model in a mini Ford Bronco on a Bridegmill tee box? Chaos all day! #BlueSteel

Television comedy usually shapes today's male characters as unintelligent, apathetic, out-of-shape kings of the couch. Think Homer or Michael Scott. Yes, men typically fall short of the glory, but that doesn't define us. Men are not just pillars of strength but also leaders and motivators. From the boardrooms to the dining tables, from the football fields to the art studios, from the pulpit to the pews, men play pivotal roles in shaping the growth and development of a community. They are the visionaries, the entrepreneurs, the dad-joke comedians, and the dad-bod mentors who tirelessly strive for excellence in every dimension, inspiring those around them.

We don't talk about Bruno, and men usually don't talk about the weight on their shoulders. This month, we have a riveting story, "The Battle Within," written by a law enforcement friend and hero who saved my family. Being responsible and standing tall for what is right in this confused world can be taken for granted and significantly impact your mental health if you don’t ask for help.

Bro-hugs to the remarkable men—the fathers, the brothers, the sons—who exemplify the essence of masculinity with competence and impart wisdom to the next generation (cue the Home Depot music). Through their leadership, integrity, compassion, and unwavering determination, we continue striving for a brighter and more prosperous future.

Finally, if you need a gift to rock Dad's world this Father's Day, we have a beauty from the Shark Tank this month!

Ted throws a double bullseye to win the game - "Barbecue sauce."

SquareKeg in the Shark Tank

SquareOne is an innovative stainless steel mini SquareKeg that uses CO2 gas to hold 128+ ounces. That's a 12-pack, five bottles of wine, or 20+ cocktails at a time. It fits conveniently into your fridge or cooler to keep drinks fresh and ready to pour.

In 2017, a medical sales professional, Tim Loucks, embarked on a journey to bring his innovative idea to life: SquareKeg. After three years of relentless self-taught product development, Tim received a call from television producers inviting him to pitch to Shark Tank investors. The episode was a turning point, with the SquareOne keg securing the investment of 'Mr. Wonderful' Kevin O'Leary. PEACE FOR THE WARRIORS THAT BATTLE MENTAL HEALTH

THE BATTLE WITHIN

MUST SEE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 14

A long-time friend and warrior of life was asked to write this article as we knew he had powerful words to extrapolate the battle that many men endure with mental health. Sergeant Damon Smith shares the underbelly of protecting and serving our communities while searching for peace from life’s terrifying realities. - Editor

When I rode my bike, I was John Baker cruising the California freeways in CHiPs.

Then I had a moment…. I was eleven or twelve, sitting in my kitchen listening to the new U2 Joshua Tree album on my Sony Walkman, and the song “Mother’s of The Disappeared” was playing while I was reading a car magazine. The article was a comparison of police cars.

“AN ORCHESTRA OF EVENTS PLAYING IN MY HEAD.”

No Cheers

Honestly, I turned down writing this article twice —once when it was offered and again when I tried to allow someone I still feel is more qualified. But they insisted. I’ve been writing short stories for a while, and they’ve gained traction in my small sphere. But I’ve never written anything like this, so when asked to write an article for the Men’s Mental Health edition, I figured I’d do what I do best… Tell a little story.

No Cheers

Law Enforcement is a funny thing… Some get into it because it’s a job with a steady income, and others are interested in it because of the things they see on the screen. Then, there’s people like me. I don’t remember wanting to be anything else… EVER. When I played with my friends as a kid, I was always the cop.

There was a huge photo of the cars lined up across the page with the desert in the foreground… That was the moment. The moment I knew what I was going to do.

But before that part of the story came to life, “football” came along. I never really watched or cared about it, but I was pretty good at it… or just good enough. As a result, I ultimately found myself at UCLA, earning a starting position, which enabled me to play against and with a few Hall of Famers.

Even then, I knew I still wanted to be a cop.

But…I’ve got to admit… There’s nothing like being in a stadium and having a hundred thousand people rise in cheers for you after a big play… Nothing. I understand why fame and performance can be so intoxicating. It’s probably the thing I miss the most. Eventually, my athletic career ended, and I was picked up by a police department. Over the next twenty-three years, I saw a few things and lost a few people.

There are no cheers when one chases down a lousy guy…  No cheers when you win a fight…And… No cheers when you save the day… but it still feels good.

Then there are the bad days… Hollywood does a good job of portraying the madness we see and go through, both the department dysfunction and the action when a city is on fire. To some extent, they also represent the dark places those moments take you to... withdrawal from loved ones, self-medicating, and self-destructive behaviors.

They don’t show how you get out of those dark places. When those bad days happen, at least for me, I go into a fog, a surreal, muted world. I float through my everyday life, interacting and speaking with people around me, but it’s all autopilot.

Behind the smiles and responses, my brain replays whatever happened on a continuous loop, processing it over and over until I can make sense of it, learn from it, or just be okay with it. Sometimes, it’s for hours and others… much more. Sleep in that world is hard to come by as my mind goes over every move, every word, and every decision—an orchestra of events playing in my head.

When the kids come to me in that world, I do my best to break out, but some situations are more complex than others. Over the years, I’ve found that my family and children are the only people who can keep me out of the swirl. I’ve had friends come to me when they were hurting. It’s always surprises me when they do. My brain says, “You’re asking me?” I’ve been honest about my struggles and tell friends how I cope—the tactics I use to tame the storm raging in my head.

MUST SEE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 16
“I WOULDN’T TRADE IT TO FEEL ANY STADIUM RISE FOR ME AGAIN.”

I’ve spent what feels like a lifetime in high-stress positions. The most stressful part is being a Crimes of Violence Detective working on homicides. One case in particular changed things for me. It was the murder of one of our own officers. We ultimately caught the people and solved another case in the process.  But something inside me broke. I was never the same or able to work to that level again.

After the case, work no longer consumed me; I started doing things away from work to keep my mind occupied and escape. Eventually, this became my new normal.  The kids became the focus when my wife and I started our family—my source of strength. I turned down overtime and took more vacation time than before. We started traveling the country in our RV. Then, there was a defining moment.

We were in a small Nebraska town visiting a winery. Yes… they have wineries in Nebraska. After exploring the property, dinner, and drinks, we were in the trailer and settled in with the kids. The kids and I were playing a silly game of Uno together when I realized…. I was in one of the happiest moments of my life. I told my wife.

CONTINUED > 17 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/CANTONGA JUNE 2024

There were no cheers at that moment, but knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t trade it to feel any stadium rise for me again. We don’t have many of those moments in life, but recognizing them when they happen makes them even better.

I still love what I do, but I drew a line in the sand. It’s my job, a small part of my life, not my whole life anymore. I do my best to leave work at work, but sometimes it follows me. My wife has learned to give me space when I need it. Knowing how to help someone takes patience and time. And then there’s the other thing I’ve come to rely on, time. I’ve had some wounds, figuratively and literally. While time may not heal every wound, eventually, it dulls the pain enough to live with it. You need to be patient enough for that time to come. I’ve seen the results of those who haven’t.

Seeking peace for each trauma we experience is necessary, healthy, and cathartic. We encourage our readers always to seek out their support networks, professional community resources, and Churches to acknowledge trauma and move towards closure. Cheers Canton.

Hasta La Luna

“Til the Moon Rises” A Refined Margarita by Freddy Benítez

ingredients:

• 1 Chilled stem glass

• 2 Fresh Limes

• 2 Fresh Oranges

• Ice cubes

• ½ a bar spoon of Agave Syrup

• 2oz Califino Tequila Reposado

directions:

• Fill the bottom of the glass with the juice of limes and oranges, no seeds or pulp.

• Fill a glass up ¾ with ice cubes

• Add in agave syrup

• Place the spoon on the bottom of the glass while leading the handle clockwise for 15 seconds. Then, reverse the direction for another 15 seconds.

• Add in the 2 Oz of Califino Tequila Reposado

• Strain into a chilled stemmed glass

• No slice, no rind; enjoy the summer moonlight in a glass  Why the tequila last? Why stir and not shake the drink, James Bond?

Freddy states that dilution will happen naturally, with a stir, and the flavors will stand out as intended. Years ago, he learned that the rum daiquiri was initially not frozen and that consistency by process and simplicity by ingredient are crucial to an excellent spirit cocktail. Unlike the Hasta La Luna, a Martini dilutes when shaken and chills a cocktail.

Adding plenty of ice and stirring allows the cocktail to obtain the right temperature and perfect dilution. Adding the tequila last enables the experience of natural flavors as one should when drinking the best tequilas in the world, Califino.

La Cantina offers luxury cuisine and an authentic experience. Three families (Benitez, Luna, and Pomares) have joined forces and opened a family-friendly establishment serving lunch and dinner. WHAT SETS TATUM ROOFING APART FROM OTHERS IN YOUR INDUSTRY?

As a family-owned business, Tatum's Roofing prioritizes personalized attention and exceptional quality in every project it undertakes. We offer comprehensive services designed to enhance homes and communities. From roofing to gutters, siding, painting, and tree removal, we provide a holistic approach to home improvement. To bring joy to every project we work on.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PASTIMES WHEN YOU'RE NOT WORKING?

I enjoy diverse activities that enrich my life and provide balance. As an IFBB pro bodybuilder, I dedicate time to training at the gym, embodying discipline and passion for fitness. As a lover of live music, I keenly appreciate concerts, having experienced unforgettable performances by Metallica, Dave Matthews Band, and Avenged Sevenfold. Notably, I also enjoy Miley Cyrus and Morgan Wallen. Beyond music, I enjoy attending Braves games for the live-action balanced with the marvels of shows like Cirque du Soleil.

I value family, relaxation, and exploration. I enjoy vacations on the serene shores of 30A and embark on adventures to new destinations, enriching my life with diverse experiences and carving new memories.

HOW HAS THE DISCIPLINE OF FORMER JOBS AS A FITNESS EXPERT HELPED YOU IN YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS?

With 15 years of experience in customer service and retail sales in the fitness industry, I have learned valuable lessons and honed my interpersonal skills. I have become adept at identifying and understanding clients’ needs. My ability to connect with customers, build authentic relationships, and tailor solutions to individual outcomes has been instrumental in building the business and delivering exceptional service to my customers.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WITH SUCH A LABOR-INTENSIVE JOB?

One effective strategy for achieving work-life balance is setting guardrails. Establishing clear boundaries between work and personal time allows me to dedicate uninterrupted focus to both spheres of their life. This might involve designating specific hours for work-related tasks and committing to unplugging from work during designated family or self-care time. Another critical aspect of achieving balance is effective time management. Prioritizing tasks, delegating responsibilities where possible, and optimizing workflow can help individuals make the most of their time, reduce stress, and allow for greater flexibility in balancing work and home life.

Practicing self-care is essential for maintaining balance and well-being. Making time for activities that promote physical and mental health, such as exercise, hobbies, and relaxation, can help individuals recharge and better manage the demands of both work and home.

Our partners are outstanding examples of driven businessmen who know how to balance life and play.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS?

For aspiring entrepreneurs, my advice is simple: take the leap of faith and start your journey. Entrepreneurship begins with that first step, so push past hesitation and dive in. Consistency is key – show up every day, ready to tackle challenges. Don’t fear failure; it’s a chance to learn and grow stronger. Embrace the journey wholeheartedly; success often lies beyond fear. Take risks, learn from failures, and stay resilient in pursuing your dreams.

The Perfect Steak

Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe?

1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking.

2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues.

3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates.

4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.

5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other.

6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly.

7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading:

• Rare: 120°F

• Medium Rare: 130°F

• Medium: 140°F

• Medium Well: 150°F

• Well: 160°F

8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.
