Life's Little Treasures
I hope this letter finds all of you in good health and high spirits as we enjoy some of the last rays of beautiful summer sun before autumn sets in.
When I took on the role as editor a few months ago, I was very excited to plan the August issue. With a theme of Kids & Pets, the possibilities are endless. Although I don’t have children of my own, I absolutely adore my nieces and nephews. I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like, but when I walk into the room and see their faces fill with joy, it melts my heart and shows me how truly precious children are to this world.
Kids are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. On page 28, discover how the Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank helps provide the region’s youngest and their families with one of the most vital resources they need to live healthy, happy lives.
For those searching for exciting adventures the entire family can enjoy, check out our feature on page 10 showcasing the variety of activities for all ages at the Hall of Fame Village
Second, who could forget pets? The special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love and the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. I am blessed to have two pets — Riley, a labradoodle, and Yogi, a bernedoodle. Every day, they remind me of the importance of empathy, living in the present and appreciating the little things in life. In this issue, we highlight For Paws Blue Cross Animal Hospital on page 22, and The Paw Pad Boutique & Grooming — two businesses dedicated to giving our four-legged family members the love and care they deserve.
Although children are of infinitely more value, what kids and pets have in common is that they need us. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.
Cheers!

Legendary Fun for Fans & Families
Experience the Magic of Canton’s Hall of Fame Village with Adventures for All Ages

Whether you’re a football fanatic, foodie, thrill seeker, shopper or lover of the great outdoors, you’re sure to find your heart’s desire at Canton’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Village, where dining, unwinding, celebrating and socializing take center field.
From the Play-Action Plaza, which offers exciting rides, to the Fan Engagement Zone, which includes a promenade of retail shops and restaurants, you’ll want to plan your next trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, located next door, with plenty of time to spare.
“We liken Play-Action Plaza to Central Park’s green space,” says Anne Graffice, executive vice president of
global marketing and public affairs for Hall of Fame Village. “With 3 acres of tiered, elevated space, it is anchored by some cool features that are fun for the whole family.”
Anne points out, “No one can miss the Ferris wheel – it came from the I-X Center and has a lot of history. It was an indoor piece, so we importantly made sure it was incredibly safe and refurbished it to be outdoors, and now it’s one of the best views of Canton you can find.”
Throughout Play-Action Plaza and the Fan Engagement Zone, families can find restaurants, shopping, interactive games and “outdoor spaces for people to just be,” Anne says.

You can pack in a full day or weekend –or taste the fun for a few hours and plan a return. “It’s not just one and done,” Anne says. “You can eat at Don Shula’s American Kitchen, spend a day at the museum, then take a zipline ride."
FUN FOR THE FAMILY
Aside from a bird’s-eye view of Canton from the Red Zone Giant Wheel – the nostalgic, swiftly-spinning Ferris wheel – the Forward Pass zipline runs the extent of the Play-Action Plaza grounds. “If you’re into thrill rides, it’s a couple minutes of pure adrenaline rush,” Anne says.

Opening soon is a third ride called Spike It. “Think of a smaller version of Cedar Point’s Demon Drop,” Anne relates. “It takes you up and down and has eight different programs, so you never know which one you’re going to get.”
Beyond the rides, Hall of Fame Village hosts a range of activities, including movie nights, concerts, yoga and other special events. Visitors can enjoy a host of free games like cornhole and other yard sports. For adults, beer pong tables add some spirit to the experience.

“Built into the hill are beautiful stone sitting areas, and the entire space is designed so we can have all types of activities and engagement there,” Anne says. “There are lots of ways for folks to really relax and enjoy being outdoors.”
DINE & DO
Retail, restaurants and entertainment await in the Fan Engagement Zone, with
recent introductions including The Brew Kettle and the first Topgolf Swing Suites in Ohio, with Full Swing simulators and games for non-golfers.
“With our Swing Suites, you can play games for all ages and interests,” Anne says. “You can throw a baseball or a football, and even chase zombies.”
The rooftop of The Brew Kettle overlooks Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. A menu of scratch-made dishes includes flatbreads, salads, wraps, burgers and sandwiches, along with some of the region’s best craft beers.
At Don Shula’s American Kitchen, the renowned coach’s concept serves up fresh flavors in a casual atmosphere with an extensive wine and beer menu. The restaurant tells the story of his journey, as the NFL’s winningest head coach with 347 career victories and 328 regular season victories.
Soon, veteran-owned Perfect Pour, which features specialty cocktails, bourbon, burgers and cigars will open, as will NFL Hall-of-Famer Isaac Bruce’s food truck concept, SMOOSH Cookies. Its gourmet ice cream sandwiches are made from fresh-baked cookies, premium ice cream and loads of “crazy toppings.”
Another hot spot for those with a sweet tooth is Heggy’s Nut Shop, a longtime Stark County proprietor of snacks that include fresh-roasted nuts and Ben Heggy’s fine chocolates. The family-owned business will offer all of the hometown favorite treats, 73 years in the making, at the Hall of Fame Village shop.
“Built into the hill are beautiful stone sitting areas, and the entire space is designed so we can have all types of activities and engagement there. There are lots of ways for folks to really relax and enjoy being outdoors.”

Take a souvenir home from Build-a-Bear Workshop, which is the only location where you can dress the plushies in football clothes. “You can’t do that anywhere else,” Anne says. “We are trying to bring a unique spin to everything we do.”
With a food truck zone on both sides of the Fan Engagement Zone, tailgating areas, outdoor patios, TVs and concessions that include on-tap beer and wine, families can build their own adventure and cater it to their favorite ways to spend time.

Currently under construction, a new 147,000-square-foot football-themed waterpark will offer a waterslide tower, lazy river, wave pool, zero-entry fun zone, swim-up bar and outdoor entertainment area.
Anne adds of developments coming soon: “There are many more exciting things to come!”

A Perfect Place for Pups & Parents

BOUTIQUE & GROOMING WELCOMES PETS WITH UNPARALLELED CARE

A trip to the groomer isn’t always a welcome experience for pets or their parents. Tara Myers, entrepreneur and owner of The Paw Pad Boutique & Grooming, understands the importance of providing man’s best friend with the pampering they deserve in an environment where both pets and their parents feel at home. Her team specializes in a personalized, one-onone grooming experience, minimizing interactions with other dogs and avoiding distractions.
Pet parents are invited to stay throughout the grooming process. A large window on the front side of the historic building, located in the Lake Cable Shopping Center, allows a full view of the furry friend's experience.
“We prioritize creating a fear-free environment for both pets and their parents,” says Tara, who opened the boutique after graduating from high school in 2014. “I’ve had the privilege of witnessing numerous clients’ puppies grow up alongside me. It has been rewarding to see them transform from playful and energetic pups into mature, beloved companions.”
Although not mandatory for the state of Ohio, Tara believes formal grooming training is a must. When she first started her business, she attended a grooming academy to learn from experts and acquire the necessary skills to provide her clients with the best care possible, as well as teach upcoming groomers. From show-ready haircuts and safety training to CPR certification, Tara’s skills allow her clients to be sure their beloved pets are in loving hands.
“Dog grooming may appear simple to some, but it encompasses much more than meets the eye,” she says, noting that canines often visit their groomer more often than their veterinarian. This frequency allows groomers to detect skin conditions, allergies, tumors and other concerns.

“Without proper training, many of these issues can be easily overlooked and escalate into more significant problems,” Tara explains. “Through formal training, I have acquired knowledge of the safest grooming techniques for dogs of all ages and sizes, as well as skills in canine CPR, fear-free grooming practices and breed standards.”
While visiting the salon, it’s not uncommon to find Tara’s 2-year-old French bulldog, Jorah, exploring the pet toys and treats in the boutique. A canine with a sensitive stomach and allergies, he has plenty of options available to him.
Sample treats are free for visitors while shopping in the store. Buddy Butters, which are calming, additive-free dog treats formulated to help soothe and relax dogs in stressful situations, are a bestseller.
“Pet owners have discovered that our calming treats alleviate anxiety, separation anxiety and nervousness in their furry companions. Our customers appreciate these treats that are made with natural ingredients without artificial additives or harmful substances,” she says.
For pet owners, choosing between healthy and unhealthy pet foods can be a challenge and requires extensive research. Tara says it is important for pet parents to avoid using human peanut butter, as some varieties contain artificial sweeteners that can be toxic to dogs.
Tara has a personal interest in providing healthy pet food and offers options to help take the guesswork out of

shopping for healthy foods. When selecting products, her goal is to create an environment where pet parents can shop with peace of mind, knowing that products are safe and healthy.
“Ensuring the well-being of pets is at the core of our selection process, so you can trust that the products available in our store have been carefully curated with pet needs in mind,” she says.
"The bond forged with an animal is truly unparalleled in this world."
Growing up, pets were part of family life for Tara, who is also a pet parent to Raichu and Corsola, a pair of feline friends. Recently, she experienced the loss of her horse, Doc, who was her childhood best friend. Losing him was a pivotal event that showed her the presence and benefits of having a pet aren’t necessarily fully appreciated until they are gone.
“The bond forged with an animal is truly unparalleled in this world. The way they intuitively perceive
Tara highlights six things pet owners need to consider when choosing a groomer.

EXPERIENCE: Look for a groomer with experience in handling various breeds, temperaments and coat types.
KNOWLEDGE: A great groomer should have knowledge of breed-specific cuts, trims and techniques.
CLEANLINESS: Ensure the groomer maintains a clean and sanitized facility, including tools and equipment, to prevent the spread of infections or other problems.
PATIENCE A reliable groomer should have patience, compassion and gentle handling techniques.
GOOD REVIEWS: Look for reviews and recommendations from other pet owners.
INTUITION: Trust your intuition. Don’t leave furry friends with just anyone.
our emotions and bring brightness to each day is nothing short of magical,” Tara says. “They are blissfully unaware of the complexities of our lives or the trivial stresses that consume us daily. Their unwavering presence is simply a testament to their unconditional love.”

A Passion for Paws
At For Paws Blue Cross Animal Hospital, Dr. Jennifer Jellison

Ensures Compassion and Care Bloom Bright
ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAMPSHIRE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYLIE FULINE PHOTOGRAPHYIn early spring, For Paws Blue Cross Animal Hospital begins receiving the phone calls. “What will you do with the flower garden this year?”
Dr. Jennifer Jellison has heard from clients, “If you take care of flowers like that, you must take great care of pets!”
She laughs, sharing that the landscaping started as a way to make her veterinary office feel like home when she took over the previous clinic in 2011. Folks drive by to see what’s growing. They honk and wave at Dr. Jennifer’s husband, who dutifully weeds and waters the ever-expanding beds every day. Some clients have given her plants to name after their pets.
Inside For Paws, compassion and care bloom bright.
For Paws is a full-service animal hospital providing general and preventive medical care, lab work, dental cleanings and surgery to cats and dogs of all sizes and ages. This includes treating emergency cases and providing routine checkups.
“I love the relationship between the animal and the owner,” says Dr. Jennifer. “We are all on the same team, working together to get the pet well, vaccinated or house trained.”
Plus, she loves puppy “face kisses” and the detective aspect of her internal medicine specialty. “I like trying to solve the problem,” she says.
A PET PROJECT
From the time she was 4, Dr. Jennifer knew she wanted to care for animals. “I’ve never wavered from wanting to become a vet,” says Dr. Jennifer, who opened For Paws Blue Cross Animal Hospital in North Canton 12 years ago.
A formative experience as a preschooler paved a lifelong career pathway. “My father and I were driving one evening and the car in front of us hit a dog on Cleveland Avenue and kept going. The car behind it beeped at the
dog and ran over it, as well,” she relates, still shaken by the inhumanity.
Her dad stopped, got out of the car and picked up the dog. “I started to cry and my father looked at me and said, ‘If you’re going to help, help. If you are going to cry, get back in the car.’”
“That was it,” Dr. Jennifer says. “I helped him load the dog into the car, and we took it to a vet hospital with an emergency service where you ring the bell. I remember ringing it and ringing it, and no one came to help. We took the dog home, found the owners, and it died that night with the owners down in our basement.”
The lesson? Just help.
Dr. Jennifer applies this mindset to her practice and community involvement. At For Paws, Dr. Jennifer knows clients have different financial concerns. “But people come here because they need help, and that is our goal,” she says. “We try to help everyone who walks in our doors in one way or another.”
One way of doing this is through Dr. Jennifer’s pet project.
The For Paws Project funds care for abandoned or surrendered animals that are badly injured or severely ill, from pelvic fractures to pneumonia. “These pets are usually referred to me by a shelter, I pay for their care privately, and then we adopt them out,” Dr. Jennifer says, adding that she believes if you have the education and knowledge, that’s a gift. “How can I not use it?”
For Paws has helped up to 2,500 dogs and cats through the project. “It’s so rewarding to see these pets get better, and I personally look at them as my pets,” she says.
In fact, she takes 10 puppies needing a home to New York City every year when she appears on Live with Kelly and Mark as a regular guest. She and associates from For Paws load up their SUVs and caravan to the city. “It’s a big honor,” she says. “I’m humbled to be invited and to bring my puppies.”
“I love the relationship between the animal and the owner. We are all on the same team, working together to get the pet well, vaccinated or house trained.”
Dr. Jennifer has also appeared on Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures. She was his pet’s vet while living in Columbus. Hanna’s executive producer saw a segment she did for the local Fox news and called on her to speak about Canine Companions for Independence.

“We do safety talks for the North Canton Fire Department and sponsor runs for the elementary school,” Dr. Jennifer adds. “We try to stay as active as we can in the community. We are invested and reach out as much as we can.”

At home, the Jellisons have a wire hair fox terrier named Zoey, and a “mop of a dog” who goes by Zen Warrior Princess. They also dote over two cats – Kitten and Elliott. “We have downsized over the years,” Dr. Jennifer says. “At one point, I had three kids, eight cats, four dogs, a hamster, a ferret and a husband!”
“We try to help everyone who walks in our doors in one way or another.”

One out of five children under the age of 5 lives in poverty in Stark County. This leaves them without basic supplies and care, including diapers. Without an adequate supply of them, babies are at risk for infections, rashes and serious health problems. Diapers also are a requirement to attend child care or participate in early education opportunities. Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank recognizes this extraordinary need and strives to ensure every baby has enough diapers to remain clean, dry and healthy. They’re making a difference for thousands of families in need throughout Northeast Ohio – one diaper at a time.
“When babies are uncomfortable, they cry more which often leads to tension in the home and less nurturing. Diapers are not a luxury. They are vital to the well-being of the child, as well as the greater impact on the entire family,” says Shannon English Hexamer, founder of Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank. “With the support of our community, we strive to keep every baby in the counties we serve clean, dry, happy, healthy and safe from rashes and urinary infections.”
Here, Shannon offers a closer look at Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank and how you can get involved in this extraordinary cause.
Q: HOW MANY DIAPERS DOES THE HEART OF OHIO DIAPER BANK PROVIDE TO FAMILIES IN NEED?
A: More than 900,000 diapers and wipes have been distributed throughout Stark, Carroll, Medina, Harrison, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties.
Q: WHEN AND HOW WAS THE HEART OF OHIO DIAPER BANK FOUNDED?
A: Originally founded as the Stark County Diaper Bank in a private residence, the Diaper Bank had five distribution partners in Stark County. Today, the nonprofit organization has grown to include 25 community distribution partners across six counties and serves nearly 800 babies every month. The Diaper Bank is a member of the National Diaper Bank Network and is active with the Ohio Coalition of Diaper Banks.
Q: HOW HAS THE HEART OF OHIO DIAPER BANK GROWN?
A: In 2019, the Diaper Bank distributed 57,230 needed supplies. This year, more than 205,000 diapers and supplies have already been distributed.
Q: DOES THE DIAPER BANK SERVE THE NEEDS OF BABIES ONLY?
A: In addition to providing diapers for babies, the Diaper Bank also provides menstruation and adult incontinence supplies to those in need. Providing access to these essentials supports independence, dignity and health for adults. One in four U.S. women struggle to afford menstruation supplies each year, yet only 4% of women are aware of a local resource where they can access them for free or at a reduced cost. Adult incontinence affects more people every day than heart disease, diabetes and cancer combined. Yet, Medicare does not cover these supplies, which on average cost about $200 a month. That means that many adults go without them.
Q: HOW DOES THE DIAPER BANK WORK WITH PARTNERS?
A: The Diaper Bank secures and collects diapers and supplies and distributes them through agency partners including food banks, social service agencies and faith-based organizations.
Q: HOW CAN THOSE WHO WANT TO HELP GET INVOLVED?
A: Donations and volunteers are needed. Financial donations made to the Diaper Bank allow organizers the ability to purchase diapers at a low cost. Each $4,500 raised purchases 30,000 diapers, which provide six months of emergency diaper assistance, a three-day supply, to 100 children. Volunteers wrap and pack diapers for distribution. Anyone can join the cause – church groups, businesses, seniors, college students, high schoolers or anyone who wants to make a difference in children’s lives.
Q: IS A MINIMUM QUANTITY OF DIAPERS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO DONATE?
A: All donations are accepted. Individual packs and even opened packs of clean diapers are accepted. Diaper drives are great service projects and can often collect large quantities of diapers. There is a need for every diaper.
Q: WHAT ARE THE DIAPER BANK’S MOST URGENT NEEDS?

A: All diapers are needed, but sizes 4, 5, 6 and 7, pull-ups (any size) and tampons are in high demand.
Q: WHERE CAN DONATIONS BE MADE?
A: Diaper Drop Boxes are located at Once Upon a Child on Dressler Road NW, Akron Children’s Health Center on Whipple Ave. NW, or Aultman Hospital at 2600 Sixth St. SW.
