All About the Ladies
I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who make life richer and more beautiful. My wife, mother and daughters are some of the most influential women in my life.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms ... But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives — making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. Lately, I have been meeting many inspiring young female entrepreneurs. We took the opportunity to feature one this month. Ashley Donnaurnmo of Posh Ink has a great story of helping other women gain (or regain) self-confidence through cosmetic tattoos.
I also encourage you to check out this month’s Local Experiences on page 8. “Our Picks for The Gal Pals” was curated by Rachel Hagenbaugh , who will be taking over as the new Canton Lifestyle Editor beginning with next month’s issue. Looking forward to seeing her thoughts on the community in the coming months and years!
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.
Thank you for reading. I’ll see you around town!

Greetings! As the new editor for Canton Lifestyle Magazine, I’m thrilled to bring our community closer together and share stories of the people and places that make it such a fabulous destination in which to live, work, play and spend time. As a lifelong resident of southern Summit County, Canton is my No. 1 destination for shopping, dining and entertainment. Most often, I can be spotted at a brewery cheering on my favorite sports teams, an antique boutique hunting down my next treasure or a garden center picking out colorful plants to surround my outdoor spaces. The Ladies’ Legacy
Canton Woman’s Club Builds a Century-long
Social, Civic and Historic Legacy
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER DRAHER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAN KARIPIDES
The Canton Woman’s Club (CWC) was conceived on February 28, 1920, when Euroia Barrick held a meeting with 14 local clubs to discuss combining forces. She had a vision to create a “clubhouse” where women could socialize and work together to better the city. Four months later, they bought the former Bucher family home at what is now 822 Market Avenue North (across from the Stark Library Main Branch). It’s the last house of the area known as Quality Hill left standing today.
More than a century later, the organization continues to propel friendships, civic engagement and history from within the walls of its 156-year-old Victorian home.
“Whether someone is new to the area and looking to make new friends and find
their place in the community, or have been a long-standing resident, we’re appealing to a variety of people with a diverse background and interests,” says Evelyn Stortz, Corporate Board Chair who’s been a member for about 11 years. “We enjoy both social and historic aspects by honoring our past while preserving the future of the club. It’s important for us to continue that legacy.”
In the past year, one member celebrated her 50th anniversary with the CWC and she was here continuously after her mom and aunts were prior. Members meet regularly for monthly luncheons or dinner events and educational programming on a variety of topics. Some participate in special interest groups that focus on history or gardening, among other topics.

“One of the best things about this entire club is the friendships you make,” says Jeanne Freitag, a 15-year member who sits on the club’s Corporate Board. “Everyone is so supportive and friendly, and we feel good about the civic work we do as well.”
Through the years, the club has collected items or donations for projects at the YWCA, Domestic Violence Project, Canton Palace Theatre, McKinley Museum and the AkronCanton Regional Foodbank.
The club is open to the public to host private parties, showers, weddings, meetings and luncheons and offers more of a cozy ambiance than event halls. Catering is available, as is individual room rental for those who prefer to bring in their own refreshments.
“The home itself is really beautiful,” says Jeanne, the club’s unofficial historian. Several original items from the home still remain, including solid cherry archways, an etched slate fireplace, a stunning circular stairway, and an original chandelier. The Bucher family’s rosewood piano was repurposed as a large sideboard in the dining room that now holds linens.
“Visitors will also see a unique embossed wall covering called Lincrusta that also decorated Titanic staterooms, is in the White House and is still manufactured today,” added Jeanne.
Come see the house in early October at the CWC’s annual Holiday Boutique, or pop in to see the abundant decorations (and grab punch and cookies) at the Holiday Open House the First Friday in December.

Hello, Beautiful!
POSH INK IS ON A MISSION TO TATTOO CONFIDENCE
Artist. Nurse. Entrepreneur. Role model. These are just a few ways to describe Ashley Donnaurnmo, a 35-year-old single mother and the owner of Posh Ink Permanent Cosmetics. The business, which opened in June 2021, is a culmination of Ashley’s creative background, passion for helping people and determination to show her daughters (Chloe, 16, and Ellie, 5) that the sky’s the limit.
“I was a nurse for 14 years. When COVID hit, it made me rethink my career and future,” she says. “I have to set a strong woman example and lead the way.”
In 2019, Ashley got microblading, a form of tattooing that utilizes a handheld tool to deposit ink into the skin to replicate eyebrow hair. As someone who felt insecure about her looks growing up, she wishes she would have realized the benefits of permanent makeup sooner.
“It really changed my life, and I wanted to be able to provide that to other people,” Ashley says. “It’s a different type of art — a good combination with nursing.”

“It’s really important for me to help people build their self-esteem. You do more things for yourself and treat yourself better when you feel more confident.”

Specializing in natural-looking permanent makeup and corrective and cosmetic tattooing, Ashley is the sole artist at Posh Ink. She’s saving the second chair for Chloe, who dreams of being a tattoo artist.
“My daughter is a huge inspiration for me. A lot of this was done with her in mind,” she says, adding that Chloe has some medical conditions that physically affect her capabilities. “I wanted her to be able to do something she loves and not feel limited in any way.”
Her younger daughter, Ellie, was born a leader. She’s going to run the place one day, Ashley laughs, adding that when she started the business, she was most nervous about her daughters seeing her fail. Her advice for women?
“Fake that confidence and just go for it,” she says. “I like to pretend I’m somebody else who I look up to. In my mind, I’m Taylor Swift, and nobody can stop me.”
Posh Ink’s services range from microblading to custom eye, lip blush, beauty mark and eyeliner tattooing. Soon, she’ll also be offering scar and stretch mark camouflage (a talent she’ll utilize to help a friend who was burned from a car accident) and 3-D areola tattooing, which she’ll perform on her best friend who recently had a double mastectomy.
“It’s really important for me to help people build their self-esteem,” she says. “You do more things for yourself and treat yourself better when you feel more confident.”
One of Posh Ink’s first clients, Yvonna Meshekow, fills with teary-eyed joy when she describes the impact Ashley has had on her life. Yvonna, who was recently diagnosed with skin cancer, has had a rough year. She’s getting through it, she says, but she wouldn’t have the confidence she does today without the eyebrow, eyelid and lip tattoo services Ashley provided.
“She changed the way I feel about myself inside,” Yvonna says. “What she gave me when I stepped out of that chair, no medical doctor or procedure has been able to give me.”
The Posh Ink studio is located at 2878 Whipple Avenue NW in Canton. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, visit PoshInk.co.

Make an Impact for Mom
Memorable ways to celebrate the mother figure in your life
The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.

Plan a Spa Day For Her and Her Friends
Mom will truly appreciate you going out of your way to set her up with a massage or facial appointment. Invite her friends along, too!
Craft the Perfect Playlist
Songs about mothers and mom’s favorite songs can come together into the perfect playlist to put on during brunch or dinner. You can either make it for her or take turns being DJ and alternate picks.
Have a Make-Your-Own Pizza Party
DIY pizza: It’s a craft (depending on how artfully you place the toppings), an activity and a meal all at once! Start with basic pizza dough, then everyone gets to add their favorite toppings. Mom gets the first pick, of course.
Hold a Lawn-Game Tournament
Croquet, cornhole, bocce, outdoor Jenga or horseshoes — what’s your family’s game of choice? Split into teams and drum up some friendly rivalry — while soaking in rays — with a backyard challenge. Make it an annual event, and pass around a trophy to the winner each year.
Visit an Amusement Park
For the mom who’s always seeking adventure, a trip to your nearest amusement park will be a welcome surprise. Not only will you be able to treat her to her fill of funnel cakes and caramel corn, but she’ll enjoy all the rides and attractions her heart desires. If you ask us, it’s a win-win.
Have a Backyard BBQ
Sure, backyard barbecues are often associated with Father’s Day, but Mom loves her burgers and dogs, too, so why should Dad get all the fun? If the weather cooperates, fire up the grill!
Make Something Totally Unique
If you do a DIY craft project, write a poem or come up with a silly dance, you know mom will love it because it is 100% you. No one can one-up a one-of-a-kind experience! You can make them for her and present them to her, or involve her in their creation.
Spruce Up The Garden
Gardeners know that Mother’s Day is the perfect time to start planting seeds. Get the whole family outside and dig in the dirt together. Every time she sees them, she’ll be reminded of the special day — it’s the gift that keeps on giving! Some flowers that are fairly easy to maintain include sunflowers, marigolds and sweet peas.
Make Pottery
Not only will you leave with a one-of-a-kind piece, but you’ll also be able to bond as you explore a new activity.
Head to the Farmers Market
There’s nothing like waking up with the sun and going to the farmer’s market on the weekend. Pick fresh produce and discover new favorites with mom, coffee in hand.
Watch Home Movies
Whether this involves digitizing old VHS tapes or getting video files off your phone and onto the TV, dig into the family archives and host a home-movie marathon. She’ll get emotional seeing how much everyone has grown.
Check Something Off Her To-Do List
Dad knows - Mom has a to-do list a mile long. Whether it’s tasks around the house or a DIY project, find out what has been nagging Mom and help her cross it off her list by doing it for her!

LOVE YOUR LAZY LAWN
An easy way to help the ecosystem
Give some thought to this. Almost all US fruit and grain crops depend on pollination, yet our insect population has declined by 75% in the last 25 years - and most pollinators are insects.
Fortunately, keeping pollinators (and our local farms) alive couldn’t be easier. Just get lazy about your lawn!
Lawns mowed every two weeks offer more food for pollinators than lawns mowed weekly. So, while you’re lounging on the couch every other Saturday, your longer grass will be supporting American food systems. As a bonus, longer lawns also need less water, so being lazy saves you money, too.
Perfect lawns are literally the empty calories of the ecosystem. By letting go of that green-carpet ideal, you’ll add color to your landscape by allowing dandelions, violets, and white clover to decorate your grass. More important, these “weeds” feed pollinators which, in turn, feed us.
Here’s one more way being lazy can save the world: skip the pesticides. Pesticides kill pollinators, and they’re hardly health food for humans, birds, and pets, either. In fact, research shows that when bees visit plants treated with neonicotinoids (a chemical in most pesticides), even small amounts can build up over time and kill the hive. Neonicotinoids disorient bees and disrupt their fertility. Worse, they can linger in plants and pollen for 2-4 years.
So be a hero. Stay in bed this weekend and stop fussing over your lawn.
