Love Local
February 2023 PUBLISHER
Brian Bailey | brian.bailey@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Emily Shea | emily.shea@citylifestyle.com
What do you do for Valentine’s Day? Is February 14th best celebrated as a date night out or enjoying a cozy night at home? Do you find yourself buying a card or just saying a kind word? My wife will tell you that I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope you do just that by sharing a little of the love in your local community. Our February issue sports the theme of “Love Local” and that certainly means your local businesses and those in your community — but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included! So, grab a coffee at Tremont Coffee and head home with a gift from a local boutique like Blended. Or snag some dinner at Papa Gyros with flowers from Seifert’s Flower Mill. Share the love and show the love! Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re living, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to love Canton just a bit more than you did before. Happy February!

A Bouquet for Any Occasion SEIFERT'S FLOWER MILL CREATES HIGH-QUALITY FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS WITH AN ARTIST'S FLAIR
Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, holidays or just because — flowers are a timeless gift for any occasion. But more than that, flowers are often a representation of one's emotions and personality. This is something that Seifert's Flower Mill owner, Rita Seifert, believes in wholeheartedly. "I love the design process of making a floral arrangement for someone," says Rita. "I am able to express my customers' feelings through floral arrangements and it is really special." Rita has been a florist since opening the flower shop with her dad in 1975. She says, "My dad had a feed store at the time but there were no more cattle in Jackson Township, so he knew he had to do something else. At the time, I was a senior in high school and he asked if I wanted to open a flower shop with him. Right after graduation, I went to school for floral design and learned the basics."

In 1990, Rita took over the business completely and has run it with her family ever since. Now, she and her team of florists — currently 14 — continue the family legacy of providing North Canton, Canton, Massillon, Canal Fulton, Green, Uniontown, Louisville and Jackson Township with high-quality floral arrangements and gifts that make a lasting impact. Rita says, "You really grow up with your customers. After they get married, you often get to do the flowers for their children's baptisms and birthday parties." Rita explains that a key part of her design process is communication with her customers, which is why they return time and time again. She says. "We create much more than generic floral arrangements that are offered through third-party online floral shops. While we can create those, I find that talking directly with someone and making a very personal arrangement for them is much more rewarding for both of us." As more and more third-party online floral shops pop up, Rita and her team prioritize attending various courses. This has allowed them to stay up-todate on popular trends and relevant design styles. Seifert's offers year-round floral design services, but Rita explains that the shop's most popular one-day holiday is Mother's Day. However, she also says that November and December are her team's busiest times of year because they are fulfilling seasonal orders for local families, businesses and churches. Rita even flies down to Florida for a week in December to provide seasonal floral design services to a long-term client. For more information about Seifert's Flower Mill and to place an order, visit SeifertsFlowers.com or call 330.499.4959. On the website, you can find information about the shop's flower subscription, wedding services, bouquets for special occasions, floral arrangements for funeral services and more. Seifert's is located at 7360 Wales Rd. NW, North Canton, OH 44720.

These Two Radio Hosts Have Been Friends Since 1982, and It Shows in Their Rapport ARTICLE BY CHRIS WATSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TERRY FRAVEL

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE
Every weekday afternoon from 3:00-7:00, Stark County can tune into 1480 WHBC to listen to the Kenny & JT Show. It’s been described by its hosts as the “Seinfeld of 2020,” i.e. a show about nothing. But for a show about nothing, Kenny Roda and Jeff Turk manage to fill it to overflowing with high school, college and professional sports news, entertainment stories, and whatever banter these two friends are feeling.
HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Kenny: We met when I pledged Alpha Tau Omega at Baldwin Wallace University. It was 1982, my freshman year and his sophomore. JT: I played football for four years, Kenny went for basketball. Kenny: Yeah, but it only took two years for me to realize I’d make a better career out of radio than the NBA. Faces for radio, that’s why we do it! JT: Speak for yourself! Kenny: I grew up near Pittsburgh listening to sports on the radio and thought it would be fun to do, so I took classes for communications. JT: I was more of a DJ. I always jocked, never talked. Kenny: So we worked together at WBWC radio, doing play-by-play and color commentary of Baldwin Wallace baseball and basketball, as well as music shows.
WHAT WAS COLLEGE LIFE LIKE FOR YOU? JT: Animal House. Kenny: The movie has some similarities to our experience, but we both graduated! What’s the old saying, C’s get degrees, too? We’re both outgoing, so we were involved in a lot of events together. But JT always had an interest in music, even back then. He was our Spring Sing director, he was put in charge of getting a bunch of guys to–
JT: No, I– Kenny: Yes you were! You were in charge, I have a picture to prove it! JT: But I wasn’t put in charge, no one else would do it! He never stops talking long enough to hear everything. We’re like an old married couple. Kenny: He said it, not me. Remember that!
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER GRADUATION? Kenny: I got a job out of college in 1986 in public access. [I was] very lucky. I started part time at WKNR in 1992. When they went all sports, a lot of people had doubts. JT: It was like Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie. They didn’t think it would last. Kenny: But it worked. I became a full-time update guy, then a sports talk host and was at WKNR for 21 years. JT: Back in college, there was no ESPN, none of that. So Kenny was on the cutting edge in Cleveland. Kenny: I’d come down for Hall of Fame Games and stay at JT’s house. We never lost touch. JT: I’m a lifelong resident of Canton. Humongously huge family, mostly in the restaurant/grocery business, so I did everything from beer sales to working nightclubs and restaurants. Kenny: You know, he’s got his own DJ business and has been doing it ever since he stopped slinging beverages. JT: After about a 20-year hiatus I started part time at local radio stations. WDJQ , WNPQ , I floated around. But again, all music. No talk or sports. Not until I teamed back up with Kenny after 35 years.
HOW DID YOU END UP BACK TOGETHER? Kenny: I’d been out of work, let go by WKNR in 2013. The next year I was approached by Larry Gawthrop, who is now the station manager and our boss, about handling WHBC’s afternoon drive. I happily did so for CONTINUED >

a couple of years, but we needed a local flair that an outsider like me couldn’t provide. Who better than JT? He knows or is related to everybody in Canton. He owns a local business. I worked with him already in college. Once we reached out it was like riding a bike, and we’ve been going strong for five years. JT: It was really a no-brainer. We’re fraternity brothers, we’re best friends, even if Kenny is a replanted Pittsburgh yinzer. The Steelers will always be his favorite team, but after covering them for so long I think that somewhere deep down he really likes the Browns. Kenny: We laugh like brothers, we fight like brothers. That’s what makes it work, and listeners love to hear us put each other in our places. I’m not from Canton so I had to earn my place, and bringing JT on board made that a lot easier. JT: I, however, grew up with WHBC. It was always a goal to work here. One of my first applications out of college in 1985 was to WHBC, and they firmly closed the door in my face. So who has the last laugh?
ANYTHING EXCITING COMING UP? Kenny: I had the honor of being involved with the Pro Football Hall of Fame for a number of years as part of their “Heart of a Hall of Famer” series where a couple hundred high school students could ask questions of these athletes and I would moderate. It was a big deal to me then, and now JT and I are starting to do more stuff over there.

JT: We’re both very excited about the Hall of Fame Village and everything going on there. I saw what this town was like when it had the steel mills and everything else, but now to bring together retail, entertainment, and the service industry in the context of sporting life is just fantastic. It’s gonna do great things for the city.
HOW DOES THE SHOW IMPACT THE COMMUNITY? JT: Very easy answer. This past August our team at WHBC got together with the staff at Mix 94.1 — where I also host the Saturday Night Mix Party — and we raised how much money for Wishes Can Happen?
Kenny: $228,000 to help make wishes come true. For 15 years now we’ve held an annual 36-hour Radio-athon, and we’ve raised just over $2 million for kids with terminal and life-threatening illnesses in that time. It’s the most important two days of the year for us. JT: That’s our community. That’s them, not us. 1480 WHBC has been on the air since 1925, and next season will mark 79 years of covering Stark County high school football. The Kenny & JT Show will celebrate its sixth anniversary in March 2023. Even if you’re out of town, you can visit WHBC.com to tune in over the internet, or on any major radio app.

CUSTOMER SERVICE MEANS SOMETHING WHEN YOUR NAME IS ON THE DOOR ARTICLE BY JACQUIE MAZZIOTTA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TERRY FRAVEL
Since 1993, the Parson family has been providing personalized customer service and competitive insurance rates for Canton and surrounding communities. Parson Insurance Agency is independently owned and has a unique value proposition for customers. Agents have the flexibility to work with multiple insurance carriers and find the most competitive rates and optimum coverage. Rates are on the rise and working with a trusted agent can often reap benefits when it comes to weathering the economy. “As inflation continues to climb, every insurance carrier is raising rates,” says John Parson, owner of Parson Insurance Agency. “We have a management system that will tell us when someone’s rates increase more than 10%. When that happens, we will notify people that the rates went up, investigate and offer a solution when we can. If it is not too acute of a situation, we can make changes and lower rates for our customers. In doing that, it keeps people happy. We have a retention rate of about 94%, and people know we’re not there just for the premium.” Other key considerations may also include health, assets and scenarios
or challenges that may not have been top of mind like adding a piece of jewelry or a laptop to a policy, or even considering health risks if a personal situation changes. Premiums are always a focus, but customer service is equally important. When an emergency happens, John can be reached 24 hours a day. He is available to receive the first phone call during an emergency and helps throughout the claim process if needed. “My name is on the door, and we are not just employees. Sometimes we will get in the middle of claims and help sort things out. I remember my first house fire. I put on my boots and just went out to the house while the fire was happening. I was taking pictures and just generally helping,” John says. John provides customer insurance coverage for Medicare supplements, life, health, auto, annuities, index annuity, commercial, private, investment properties, RVs, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, classic cars, builder’s risk and more. ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET
Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love.
26
H OM E U P DAT E | STY L E + BE AUTY
A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
01
Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
USE R EAL ESTATE WISELY
ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR
02
Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

NEGATIVE SPACE
03
Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION
04
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
05
The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
UPGR ADED HA NGERS 28
H OM E U P DAT E | STY L E + BE AUTY
06
BAG & SHOE STOR AGE
Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.
HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-to-ceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for outof-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

LIGHTING Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.
08 M AKE A STATEMENT Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
