Katie’s Legacy: Local Family Creates Grants for the Community's Youth ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SUPPLIED

Karate lessons, violin rentals, prom tickets, art supplies and softball cleats— these are all items local families couldn’t afford for their children. Thankfully, with support from the nonprofit Katie’s Kids, those families were able to purchase the items, lift their children’s spirits and feel the kindness of Kaitlyn Eckelberry’s legacy. Throughout the year, Katie’s Kids provides grants averaging $150 to Stark County children in grades K-12 who are identified by a network of community liaisons— teachers, counselors, religious leaders and social workers. The grant, in the form of a check or gift card, is given to the liaison to give to the child’s caregiver so they can purchase the item with their child to ensure the dignity of the caregiver.

WHO IS KATIE? Kaitlyn “Katie” Eckelberry’s life was just starting. After the Hoover High School alumna earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Gannon University and passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination, she signed a contract for her dream job as a physician assistant in orthopedics. She was coaching softball at Chatham University, had just signed a lease on a new apartment and was building a life with her boyfriend, Kane Elliot. In February 2020, Katie’s life changed forever. Two weeks before starting her job at Penn Highland Hospital, she was driving home from softball practice near Pittsburgh when a drunk driver crossed the center line and hit her vehicle head-on. Katie passed away from the accident at the age of 23. Katie is remembered for her vivacious personality, big heart and passion for helping those less fortunate feel loved. “She was an includer,” recalled Katie’s mother, Lori Eckelberry. “She could always tell who was hurting and did her best to make them feel better. She had a good heart.”

WHY KATIE’S KIDS? Following Katie’s passing, her parents, Jim and Lori, along with sisters Kristina and Kortney, were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from their family, friends and the community. “It was our faith, family and friends that carried us through,” said Jim. “So many people checked in and asked us how they could help us through this difficult time.” While grappling with their grief, the Eckelberrys were sure about one thing: they wanted to continue Katie’s legacy. It was through a colleague of Jim’s that they learned about Alice’s Kids, an organization based out of Virginia that provides financial assistance to children facing immediate needs. Jim and Lori talked to Alice’s Kids about replicating the program in Stark County, and the organization graciously agreed. Drawing on Lori’s background in education and Katie’s passion for helping others, Katie’s Kids was established. The nonprofit was born out of their deep desire to continue Katie’s legacy, embracing her caring spirit and dedication to boosting others’ self-esteem.

HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK? Katie’s Kids does not accept applications from the general public. Instead, the nonprofit has developed a network of community liaisons— teachers, counselors, religious leaders, social workers and others— who complete a simple application upon identifying a child with a specific need. The immediate need for a child can vary from summer camp fees, shoes and sporting equipment to AP exam fees, senior pictures and instrument rentals. Providing direct assistance for items families can’t afford allows the child to feel more “normal” amongst their more fortunate peers.

If the application is approved, a check is written to the appropriate entity, such as a dance studio or music company, or a gift card is sent electronically to the liaison in less than 48 hours for the family to use. It’s important to Katie’s Kids that they provide the gift card to the caregiver, allowing the caregiver to purchase the item with their child and be the hero in the story. “It’s a win-win,” shared Jim. “For a child who needs basketball shoes–– the parent feels good about providing for their child, and the child is excited to have new sneakers. That’s a slam dunk in my book.” To ensure that the support is being used to enhance the self-esteem of children, the average grant is $150 per child and cannot be used for food, housing, transportation, medical care or legal fees.

HOW'S IT GOING? Since Katie’s Kids started, direct financial assistance has supported more than 900 school-aged children in 60 schools throughout Stark County, all in Katie’s honor. “Every single family tells me the relief and peace it brings to them when one small or large financial burden is off their plate," said Kristin Dunnivan, a community liaison for Avondale Elementary. "Most of them feel terrible admitting that their child’s activities are a burden to them, but when the financial side of it is relieved, their whole perspective changes!” CONTINUED >

Each year, the nonprofit raises money through generous donations from various programs like its annual Fore Eck Forever Golf Outing, 5K run and 14 Club— a heartfelt initiative that allows participants to make a monthly contribution of $14 in memory of Katie, who wore the number 14 throughout her athletic career. “We started Katie’s Kids for a selfish reason — to keep Katie’s legacy alive,” shared Lori. “The unselfish reasons are the 905 kids and counting

we are helping. Every time we help a child, it helps heal our hearts some.”

WHAT'S NEXT? The board of directors and its all-volunteer staff are considering expanding Katie’s Kids into Summit and other counties. They also hope to continue to build a base of support, get the word out about the program and lift as many spirits as possible because they know it’s what Katie would have wanted. In life, there are people who dream bigger and work harder than the rest. Maxwell “Max” Hartong was undeniably one of those people–– a young man with a deep sense of purpose, a contagious drive for success and an unwavering determination to better himself and those around him. Max was not merely a dreamer; he was a doer. Those who knew him understood that there was no limit to what Max could achieve if he set his mind to it. He captained both Jackson High School’s lacrosse team and the Division I lacrosse team at Jacksonville University. After earning a bachelor’s degree in finance, he balanced working as a financial analyst while coaching high school lacrosse. He had his sights set on more and rose to the top of his class at the University of Miami School of Law before transferring to Harvard Law School. At Harvard, he excelled in the Federal Courts and pursued an externship with the US Attorney’s Office. Max climbed mountains both figurately and literally––climbing Mount Rainier not once, but twice, proving that life’s peaks are there to be reached and sometimes re-reached. “When you write down your goal, some people will tell you ‘You can’t do it,’” said Dr. Steven Coss, a close family friend who coached his son Steve and Max in lacrosse starting in the third grade. “Max never let that stop him from pursuing his dreams.” Max was as kind-hearted as he was competitive. He married his high school sweetheart, Taylor Wiseman, on May 21, 2022, in Canton, Ohio surrounded by their family and friends. Their next chapter was just beginning. Max had accepted a position at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in New York City, one of the largest law firms in the world, and planned to start working there following graduation from Harvard Law. In November 2022, at the age of 27, Max passed away from medical complications while competing in the Miami Ironman Triathlon. His family and closest friends found themselves in the same church where they had celebrated Max and Taylor’s wedding just six months earlier, now mourning his loss.

Max accomplished so much in his lifetime, and his influence continues to extend far and wide. Many people have shared the profound impact Max had on their own lives. Gabe Gemberling, who has known Max since the fifth grade, imparted what his best friend had instilled in him. “From a young age, he taught me right from wrong, to fight for what I believe in and to physically push myself to break just to learn along the way. All the things that took me into my early adult life to understand or master, Max had already done at a young age. He pushed himself to never accept anything less than the best he could be and expected the people around him to follow suit. By saying Max is a societal loss, I'm making an understatement.” In the months that followed Max’s passing, Max’s parents, Bryan and Cindy, established an endowment fund through Jacksonville University to honor their son's memory in a way that exemplified his life and encouraged others to follow in his footsteps. The fund aims to support a Jacksonville University graduating senior or alumnus of the men’s lacrosse team who plans to attend graduate school. “We knew we had a special son, but we were overwhelmed by how many people Max had impacted through every aspect of his life,” shared Bryan. Friends and family were inspired by Bryan and Cindy’s tribute to Max’s legacy and came together locally to establish a memorial fund in Max’s honor through Stark Community Foundation. Tim Furbay, a coach who, like Dr. Coss, coached Max along with his son Tyler in lacrosse, shared his motivation behind this effort, stating, “When you feel a loss this big, you feel it in your heart and soul to do something for a kid who had so much promise and whose life was cut short. I watched Max grow from a young kid doing pranks into a mature, loyal friend who was succeeding in academics and athletics. He was such a good kid and a great example of who you want your kids to hang out with.” Dr. Coss and Tim had the mutual idea to bring people together to help raise money to establish the Max Hartong JHS Memorial Award Fund.

"He pushed himself to never accept anything less than the best he could be and expected the people around him to follow suit." — Gabe Gemberling, highlighting Max's profound influence on his peers. “It was heartbreaking. We knew we had to do something,” said Dr. Coss. “We felt compelled to do something in his honor, and we wanted this fund to represent the ideals and values he stood for.” Today, the fund stands as a testament to Max's determined spirit and serves as an inspiration for future generations to chase their dreams both on and off the field. The fund provides yearly scholarships to graduating seniors on the Jackson High School men's lacrosse team. A committee regularly spreads the word about the fund, reviews scholarship applications and decides which students receive the award in Max’s memory. Most recently, the committee identified two exceptional students from a pool of applicants to receive the inaugural Max Hartong JHS Memorial Award in 2023. Santiago Gil, one of Max's closest friends and a committee member, reflected on the selection process, saying, “I did not think anyone would be able to live up to Max’s name, but after reviewing the applications, there were two

clear outliers who immediately reminded us of Max. I was flooded with memories reading their essays that took me back to my high school days with Max.” During an awards banquet held in June, Nathan Stout and Aaron Waltman were announced as the inaugural award recipients. Nathan is pursuing a finance degree at Ohio State University, and Aaron is pursuing a degree in business management and finance while continuing to play lacrosse at Capital University. Santiago had the privilege of speaking at the banquet and presenting the award to Aaron and Nathan, who, much like Max, were characterized by their work ethic, compassion, ambition for success, love for lacrosse and their ability to play the game with integrity and passion. Santiago shared, “I normally don’t like public speaking, but to have the opportunity to speak about my best friend and present the winners was a no-brainer for me. It was an honor to be able to speak about him and see the smiles on the faces of the winners as their names were said out loud in front of their peers.”

Bobby Lyle, the current head coach of the Jackson High School men’s lacrosse team, envisions Max’s life philosophy becoming a perpetual source of inspiration for his team and the broader high school community. He explained, “Max never settled for easy and expected more out of himself. He was hard-working, disciplined, loyal and self-motivated–– all attributes we aim to instill in our students and athletes to become good people and productive citizens. It is awesome to know that Max's memory will live on through this scholarship for future generations of Jackson lacrosse players.”

The committee aspires to grow the fund, offer renewable scholarships and most importantly, carry on Max’s legacy in our community. The way Max lived his life with passion and intention is a source of motivation for all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Place your favorite holiday cookie cutter on the board first. Fill the cookie cutter with mini marshmallows. Next, layer the large items first. Next add a variety of chocolate covered treats on opposite sides of each other between the mounds of berries. Be sure to add touches of berries around the edges. If space allows, place hot cocoa on board. Otherwise, set bowl full of hot cocoa mix and any additional hot cocoa fixings adjacent to the board.

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
