Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water (or a Slip ‘N Slide!), eating ice cream on a hot summer day or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. Having written that, a mid-summer getaway isn’t all that bad either! Meredith, Lauren, Allyson and I will seek a little summer adventure outside of the country this month. Can’t wait to snorkel! C elebrat i ng T he Hoover C ompa ny Second Annual Hoover Park Festival Returns to North Canton Landmark July 24

The second annual Hoover Park Festival, presented by the Hoover Historical Center at Walsh University and The Hoover Company, will be held on Sun., July 24, from 1-5 p.m. in Hoover Park — across from Walsh University. This free community event honors the history of The Hoover Company and its impact on North Canton and Stark County. The inaugural festival in 2021, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first Hoover International Sales Convention, attracted more than 400 visitors to the park and museum on a rainy day. This year’s festivities include history talks and self-guided tours, a garden boutique and plant sale, presentations on pollinators and invasive plant species, a performance by the Glen Oak High School Marching Band, activities and displays from the Stark County Beekeepers Association, North Canton Public Library, Stark Parks, and North Canton Heritage Society as well as children’s storytelling, food trucks, raffles and giveaways, vintage cars from the 1920s, a vintage baseball game between the Fulton Mules and the Smithville Stars and a very special performance of the original Hoover Company calliope. Megan Pellegrino, Director of the Hoover Historical Center and the Walsh University Museum Studies Program, aims to share the history of the property that contains the historic Hoover banquet hall and the Hoover Historical Center — a museum owned and operated by Walsh that is dedicated to telling the story of The Hoover Company while engaging the community in a celebration of the Hoover legacy. “This property is original Hoover family farmland where ‘Boss’ Hoover was raised and where Hoover salesmen from across the U.S., Canada and England gathered in the 1920s to learn about new products and sales techniques while also enjoying time spent together,” says Megan. “This is a community treasure and we can’t wait to share it with everyone at the festival.”

Lounging in the shade is a basic fundamental of keeping cool when the dog days come trotting around again, be it in the shadow of a stately tree or in the shelter of your home. With shade on the brain, we spoke to Nick Stock, owner of Stocks Draperies, a Canton establishment that specializes in custom-made draperies and shades for both residential and commercial applications. He told us about the history of the family business and how to get the most out of a window treatment this summer. Stocks Draperies was founded by Nick’s parents, Don and Nikki Stock, in the early 1970s. Don had previously been employed as an ironworker until a tragic work accident deprived him of both an arm and a career. But the couple managed to turn an overwhelming hardship into an opportunity. Nikki used her sewing experience to craft beautiful draperies and Don became a self-made drapery salesman. It’s now about five decades later and Don is still selling, but Nick has taken the reins. Nick initially entered the family business after graduating college in 1997, bringing with him an added focus on commercial work for such institutions like offices, schools and nursing homes. Despite having a modest staff of five to seven employees, the team successfully expanded its repertoire to cover large-scale projects for builders and contractors. For instance, Stocks Draperies handled the window treatments for Aultman Hospital’s 2010 expansion project. Nick points out, “There are a ton of small businesses in Canton that face the same challenge — big projects without a lot of people. Nick advises against washing your draperies, valances or shades. Washing or dry cleaning can both destroy the shape and crispness of the fabric, leaving them flat and lifeless. “A handful of people I’ve worked with are nervous about leaving the U.S. because, in order to re-enter the country, travelers must test negative for COVID. A lot of us thought those restrictions would have eased up by now, but the situation is fluid and difficult to predict as the number of COVID cases continues to fluctuate,” says Candy. For some families, tradition beckons travelers to return to the same location annually, but this fall may be the ideal time to change the routine. Consider hiking in the state of Washington, boarding a train for a Canadian tour, snorkeling at Hawaii’s Big Island or experiencing breathtaking views of the Grand Canyon. If considering a trip abroad, Paris awaits! “I recently worked with a couple planning a visit to Rome for a week of yoga this upcoming fall,” says Candy. “So, if you want to spend a week practicing yoga, I can guide you on a yoga experience.” What may come as a surprise, is those traveling as a family or group often find it’s cheaper to travel internationally. Punta Cana, for example, is often a less expensive vacation than many domestic destinations. This is often a result of package prices and all-inclusive resorts.

Regardless of where you'd like to go, it's important to start by establishing a budget. Also, consider package deals as they can often provide better pricing. For example, Candy explains that a nine-day package through the Canadian Rockies and Glacier National Park — including a vintage jammer, a glass-walled boat, lodging and airfare —has a base price of $3,700. For the most cost-conscious travelers, using online travel meta-search engines can sometimes come with a risk. Read the fine print. According to Candy, if using online travel sites to look for the best pricing, when comparing apples to apples, working with a travel professional can often yield better pricing and the assurance of receiving customer service. “If a flight is canceled, my clients can always call me. I package everything together prior to their departure, and if they need me while they are away, I am available,” says Candy.
