John D. Dellagnese III is a name synonymous with achievement here in Northeast Ohio. This self-made man is responsible for a veritable empire of exquisite structures, from office buildings to medical and industrial properties to shopping centers and beyond. “I’ve been very fortunate,” says John, the 75-year-old and semi-retired president and chairman of Dellagnese Construction Company. “My employees do amazing things, and we’ve never had a tenant leave because they didn’t like the building."

That’s quite an accomplishment considering the sheer volume of tenants and buildings for which Dellagnese Companies (John’s property management entity) is responsible. John didn’t begin as real estate royalty, of course, but he’s always been a motivated entrepreneur. As a 14-year-old, he traded foreign cars out of his mother’s garage and under her name he purchased, repaired and sold enough European Peugeots, Jaguars and MGs to draw the attention of the state of Ohio, which issued a letter warning that his mother would need to obtain a license to continue. Still, he pursued his vision of speeding cars and growing wealth. “I used to think the fastest way to become rich was to become a racecar driver,” says John. At 16, John joined a Toronto-based motorsports club in order to circumvent the American age restriction on racing, and at 17 he began to race himself. Before long, however, John decided that racing to riches was only the fastest route in the punniest sense. This is when he set the metaphorical handbrake and entered the world of construction. “After I finished my first general contracting job,” says John, “I realized that meant I was already unemployed again. So I started building on my own account.” Thus, Dellagnese Construction Company was founded in 1964, and 57 years later business is still strong from John’s creation. Perhaps this is because tenants recognize the value in a Dellagnese building. Designed by a team of dedicated and talented architects, the Class A constructions feature astonishing amounts of natural light, modern yet timeless design and stunning glassed atriums that have become something of a calling card for John over the past 40 years.

One day in 1980, John was having lunch with his chief architect and sketching out designs for a large office building on a napkin. “I said I don’t want any windows,” says John, chuckling at the memory. “I’m tired of looking at slush and snow. I want a big atrium, with lots of green plants.” Of course, the office still needed windows, but that elegant, light-filled atrium started a trend that earned him some notoriety as the “guy who builds atriums.” However, John’s true claim to fame is as the mastermind behind Embassy Corporate Park, a 140acre office park featuring a bevy of buildings erected by Dellagnese. “I started Embassy Corporate Park in 1986,” says John, reminiscing on the area’s establishment. “I thought I’d be there 10 years, and here I am, still there. It’s almost finished!” “These buildings didn't happen by chance,” says Deborah Davis, personal assistant to John. “He attached himself to the project and is very proud of the work.” He’d never tell you that, though. A pointedly humble man, John quips, “I don’t even know how to use a pencil without going into debt!” Modest roots give John the perspective needed to blend business and values. When it comes to design, he believes that satisfying the tenant begins with satisfying their employees, making quality amenities crucial. In regards to ethics, John espouses honesty and integrity, standing behind his work years after completing it without hesitation. As for his own staff, he ensures they are well cared for and supported. He’s even gone so far as to use his personal funds to make payroll during an economic downturn. These qualities shine in Dellagnese’s organization as well and are why they are the best at what they do.

Barbershops are designed with men in mind. From hot lather shaves to straight razor and pompadour cuts, a visit to the barber can be a time to relax and enjoy personal attention. Licensed barbers are specially trained in their craft and focus on grooming and pampering. Whether it’s a family tradition for a first cut of the newest member of the family’s namesake (don’t forget to save that lock of hair) or a social visit to see a favorite barber, specialized cuts and services are offered for gentlemen. Today’s barbershops also welcome women, who can see a barber or a stylist. Time may have changed the landscape of Canton over the last several decades, but the 30th Street Plaza Barbershop, located at 3046 Cromer Ave. NW, remains a staple. Foodies now visit trendy restaurant fronts where retail stores once stood in the plaza, and longtime customers can continue to visit their local barbershops. CONTINUED >

Joe Ianni took over ownership of the 30th Street Barbershop in 2019. “My cousin, Larry Capaldi, owned the barbershop and cut hair until he was 90 years old,” explains Joe. Customers who are considering a flat top or skin-tight fade will find five licensed barbers and a licensed stylist. Customers as young as two months and older, including both men and women, are welcome. The more mature customer who may choose to fashion a smooth, bald top can relax while receiving a head shave complete with hot towels. “We are a family neighborhood barbershop and have been providing haircuts here for generations. We do it all,” Joe says. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 330.492.9811. Walk-ins are also welcome. Studio Barbershop, located at 4333 Cleveland Ave. next to Fishers Foods, was founded in 2013. Customers who may be considering a fresh fade for a receding hairline or an old-school classic trim will find a team of young barbers who extend a modern feel to this traditional barbershop. “We have an upbeat atmosphere and a current vibe. We’re hitting the now time,” says Kevin Johnson, owner of Studio

Barbershop. “The guys do a lot of razor lineup cuts, but ladies are also getting cuts at barbershops. The fresh fade is common among men and women.” Kevin is a licensed barber and has been in the cosmetology and barber industry for 30 years. He currently employs four barbers and one stylist who have 75 years of experience combined. He says he is always looking for new barbers. We Look Back at How the 1972 Committee Raced to Construct KSU Stark Track for AAU Olympic Stepping Stone Meet 24

They called it Stark County’s most unusual real estate investment. That’s how a committee of citizens pitched its fundraising campaign to transform a “tranquil, grassy slope” on the Kent State University Stark Campus into an allweather track for the Amateur Athletic Union 1972 National Women’s and Girls’ Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The AAU meet was to be held June 28 - July 2, 1972, as an “Olympic stepping stone” where the top finishers would qualify for the Olympic Trials July 7-8 in Frederick, Maryland. More than 900 athletes were expected to compete. A group of community leaders, business owners and Stark residents met regularly starting in September 1971 to discuss the possibility of hosting the event in Canton – even though they didn’t have a track. The committee submitted a bid to host the meet, along with competing bids from Knoxville (TN), Philadelphia (PA) and Wilmington (DE). In early October, the AAU awarded the bid to Stark County thanks to its ideal Midwest location. With just nine months before the event was set to take place, the committee had a race of its own divvying up various tasks to bring the pipedream to fruition. It’s a dream that appears to have started with Bob Kistler, a 1944 McKinley High School graduate and avid athlete who played football and basketball, ran track, and was a diver on the swim team. He ran track again in college, and later coached several sports at the high school level before jumping to the collegiate level with Kent State Stark. Bob served as KSU’s athletic director and a health education professor from 1963 until his retirement in 1985. Bob, along with Jack Morehart, the first dean of the Stark regional campus, had recently led the construction of a health and physical education building (now the KSU Conference Center). Their plans to add a track facility derailed that summer when allocated state funding got held up. Bob saw hosting the championship meet as an opportunity to build the track another way. “Dad was a good recruiter,” says Jon Kistler, Bob’s son. “He would get fun things like this started, and then ask people to help him out. He did a pretty nice job, so people did help.” CONTINUED >

Bob took on the role of meet director and convinced his friend Dick Kempthorn – fellow McKinley ’44 alumnus and football player – to chair the citizens’ committee. Dick was a local automobile dealer and a strong booster of area athletic programs. The trio of Bob, Jack and Dick delegated responsibilities for a feverish fundraising campaign to finance the all-weather track surface and the event itself. “$1 BUYS A SQUARE FOOT OF TRACK,” reads the January 25, 1972 progress report stashed in Dick’s briefcase of well-preserved meeting notes. The team made phone calls and sent letters to businesses of all sizes and community leaders asking for donations for building materials, housing, food, referee uniforms, flagpoles, competition equipment and more. Construction was underway in January. By February 15, the committee had secured 210 rooms for athletes at three Belden Village hotels. On March

5, they held an open house in the Kent State Stark Field House to show off a scale model of the track and field. In mid-April, registration packets went out in the mail to competitors. “JUNE’S A’COMING!” said Phyllis Allen, vice chairman of publicity, in her detailed progress reports. She also encouraged the committee to “HUSTLE YOUR BUCKS” and fill the treasurer’s cash box. And hustle they did – with both money and manpower. Dick’s son, Jim Kempthorn recalls personally hammering trim pieces into the track with his siblings and other kids of committee members. “We were up against the wire,” recalls Jim. “The families all helped and we were out working till dark many days.” The work paid off. In the end, the committee received countless donations and volunteer signups. The North Canton Jaycees offered to sell programs; local physician Virgil Tirmonia signed on as the official meet doctor; someone
donated free billboards. People simply came together for a common goal in an inspiring way. Not only did the committee complete its sprint to race day, but reaction to the AAU meet was overwhelmingly positive from competitors, coaches and officials alike. In fact, the event was so well received that Canton was one of only six locations invited to bid for the 1976 Women’s Olympic Track and Field Trials. Nearly everyone from the citizens committee returned to submit that bid, though they weren’t successful that time around. Bob, the enduring sport enthusiast, did successfully host the U.S. Olympic Swim Team to train at his Branhaven Swim Club on Portage Street. One of its members, Mark Spitz, won seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Games. This month marks the 50th anniversary of the AAU meet, and we salute the individuals who worked tirelessly to bring the track to life and made our county shine.
